Completed a full playthrough, works out of the box
Performs well as expected for PS1 style graphics. In the current 23.1 update of the game, I did encounter a bug where the pause/settings menu stops responding to mouse input (but you can still navigate it using keyboard).
Game works fine with Keyboard controls, but with Switch Pro inputs had to be manually remapped, rating it Platinum because that appears to be problem for Windows users too.
Works without issues out of the box
Game has partial controller support, depending on what controller you use you may need to remap controls.
Everything works out of the box including subtitles, the only issue is that it has the mouse jumping/drifting bug as described in Proton GitHub issue #1418
Works out of the box without any issues and with good performance. The mouse jumping/floating issue has been fixed with this Proton version.
Game works, except that if switching to fullscreen you can't go back to windowed mode or the video freezes.
Game works but mouse pointer/controls get stuck when switching between desktop/game.
Game works perfectly, except that alt+tab between fullscreen mode and desktop works only once. Switch from Fullscreen to Desktop, then back to Fullscreen. And the game says thinks you are in Windowed mode (but you aren't). Trying to Alt+Tab back to the desktop again fails. See issue #2739 on Github
Intro logo and tutorial video flickers.
Game does not exit gracefully, it crashes
The videos play but flicker, however luckily all cut-scenes in the game are real time. So this is only noticeable when watching the tutorial videos (that are less than a minute long). Note that the game not exiting gracefully in practise makes no difference for playing the game.
With default Proton 8.0-5 the game crashes if hovering/switching between crafting and skill menu items fast (where it plays a short demonstration video). This problem does not occur with Proton 9 or Experimental.
Works well but game is demanding. On a RX 7900 GRE at 1440p resolution with maxed settings (raytracing disabled), struggled to maintain a stable 60fps at some parts of the game.
Works out of the box using default Proton, did not encouter any issues
Game does have some traversal stutter (that also occurs on windows). Also like most UE5 games very demanding on highest graphic settings. Disable HW raytracing as it tanks performance and barely looks any different.
Game works out of the box without issues
Game runs at a locked 24fps framerate, text and hot spots might be hard to see on small screens on handheld devices.
Works out of the box, completed full playthrough without any issues
Note that in the planet scanning section, you have to hit the E key to get rid of the text box before you can click on anything with the mouse pointer (game did not prompt to do that).
Game won't start nothing happens, different Proton launch options and disabling overlays made no difference.
Works out of the box with similar performance as on Windows!
Fullscreen mode behaves like Windowed fullscreen, If you Alt-Tab to desktop you still see the game in the background. This is, however, the same as how the game behaves on Windows.
Works out of the box with native like performance, also tested that switching between fullscreen/windowed works.
Game launches with a black screen and then exits. Launcher works but displays just empty boxes as characters (this I believe is because of the font Proton uses does not actually include any Japanese characters). No Proton launch options made any difference.
Game won't launch, configuration tool launches but has just boxes for all characters.
Everything worked out of the box
The configuration tool is also now displayed in correct language and characters
Game works fine with good performance until the first cut-scene video is going to be played. There the game gets stuck in a black screen, the videos are in mp4 AVC/AAC format. Tried different Proton launch options without success.
Game works out of the box and is playable until where presumably the first cut-scene is going to be playable. There the game gets stuck in a black screen and you have to force quit.
Game works perfectly by installing Quarts and Media Foundation. Got it working with the following files: quartz.dll colorcnv.dll mf.dll mferror.dll mfplat.dll mfplay.dll mfreadwrite.dll msmpeg2adec.dll msmpeg2vdec.dll sqmapi.dll
Rating the game borked because this is beyond just a tweak, and not all of these files are freely distributable.
Game is playable but some videos are flipped
videos flipped upside down
On standard proton you can now play the game (current experimental crashes). Videos are played but some of them are flipped upside down.
The game works fine without issues except that the Cinnamon desktop taskbar is visible at the bottom. Game runs in a fullscreen borderless window. There are no settings in the game to adjust resolution, aspect ratio or switch between windowed or fullscreen. I'm rating it silver because can't tell if this is a problem with Proton, Cinnamon desktop or the game.
Runs without issues now even in fullscreen
The previously mentioned issue of Cinnamon taskbar being visible appears to have been fixed.
Works fine except that the game launches minimized, so you have to bring up the game manually. Also Alt+Tab between the game and the desktop is glitchy.
Runs perfectly out of the box, good performance and no issues, also tested switching between desktop and the game.
Game works without problems, the only issue is that it crashes when exiting the game.
Game works out of the box, the only issue is that ut crashes when exiting the game "LowLevelFatalError [File D:\Engine\Engine\Source\Runtime\Windows\D3D11RHI..."
Game works fine out of the box, but like with previous Proton versions still with 4.2-2 the game crashes when exiting "LowLevelFatalError [File D:\Engine\Engine\Source\Runtime\Windows\D3D11RHI..."
Game works perfectly now out of the box, the game also exits gracefully without crashing or throwing an error message.
Work's perfectly, tried in both windowed and fullscreen mode, also switching between desktop and the game.
Playable but with graphical glitches, some texture flickering and grass textures are not rendered correctly with transparency.
Playable but with texture flickering and some textures like grass are not properly transparent.
Works well out of the box, except for some grass textures are missing transparency so they look like minecraft blocks.
Game works perfectly with "PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%" launch option. Without it there are graphical glitches.
Game is playable but with poor framerate (20-30fps at 1080p resolution), Audio has some crackling but launch option "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command%" fixes that. Some graphical glitches with shadows.
Same as with Proton 3.16-7. Playable but with poor framerate, audio has crackling but launch option "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command%" fixes that. And there are graphical glitches with shadows.
With Steam launch option "PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%" performance is great. If post processing is set to high there are graphical glitches, with post processing set to medium the game works flawless.
Problem with graphical glitches when post processing set to high remain, with medium the game works fine.
Performance is poor without launch option D9VK
With post processing set to high there are graphical glitches, with medium the game looks fine.
Significant performance hit if not using D9VK
Works out of the box without issues
Game works now out of the box with default Proton
Game won't start, tried both DX9 and DX11 version.
When launching the game, the .NET installation appears to go through now. But when launching the game nothing happens. Steam just says game is running for a while.
Game launches and is playable out of the box using current proton experimental
Game launches minimized/in the background, have to bring it up manually by alt+tab
Game launches and works up to the main menu, when trying to start the game it crashes. Different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays made no difference.
Game crashes after selecting "new game" from the main menu. Also if you hit any key during the intro logo sequence plays the game pauses for a couple of seconds. Tried different Proton launch options without success.
Works out of the box with default Proton, completed a full playthrough (game version v1.02)
In the games graphical options I recommend setting "Volumetric Quality" to "Epic" or lower, even though you get a good framerate. With the "Volumetric Quality" set to highest "Cirematic" setting it appears to cause a slight jittery feel looking around.
In the later parts of the game there are a few minor bugs. Happened a couple of times getting stuck on walls/objects. And things like enemies and random objects glitching out. But these issues are not Proton specific.
There can be slight stutter entering new areas, but not at all as bad as I have seen some people experience on Windows. Game appears to actually be running smoother on Linux.
Game launches with the screen flickering between black and the game, different Proton launch options and disabling overlays made no difference.
Video flickers between black and the game, tried running it windowed with a set resolution like previous reports suggested but it made no difference. Also tried with D9VK.
Game is perfectly playable, however intro logo video is just a black screen, and you have to hit enter to continue. When exiting the game there is also an error message.
Crashes when trying to start a new game
Game used to be playable just with missing videos (that could be worked around by mf-install). However with some Mesa (development/oibaf) driver change around September 2019 the game started having graphical glitches (texture flickering), now the game just hangs when trying to start up a new game.
Need to install media foundation for videos to play.
Game is now with most recent Mesa drivers playable again, no crash or graphics corruption. But the videos are skipped without mf-install.
Can be played on regular Proton too, the videos are not essential.
Everything works out of the box with standard proton
Have completed the game on Proton, the intro videos are now working too.
Game works perfectly windowed or maximized window, but in fullscreen the graphics did not scale.
Game won't launch nothing happens
The game does not launch with standard Proton. Allegedly it is possible to make the game playable using Protontricks or Proton GE, did not try that though.
Works out of the box without issues
Good performance and everything seems to work including videos
Won't start error message "Runtime error 2002 Could not load animation at line 18330".
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
The launch option fixes glitching loading screen, GE is needed for video that is not essential to the game though.
Game works out of the box, I completed a playthrough without issues
There were no issues with the videos (FMV games often have issues if not using recommended codecs). The English translation is rough, but one can understand the gist of the story from context.
Works out of the box, completed a playthrough and all three endings
Played v1.0.3 of the game without issues and with good performance
Crashes randomly without launch option "PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%"
Game won't start, tried disabling Steam overlays and different Proton launch options.
launching the game there is just a black screen and nothing happens, tried different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays. Also tried 32bit and 64bit version of the game.
Won't start just a black screen and nothing happens .Tried Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays. Also tried 32bit and 64bit version of the game.
Game launches to a black screen, nothing else happens. Tried 32bit and 64bit versions, and also with D9VK
Launches to a black screen, nothing happens. Tried 32bit and 64bit versions and also D9VK.
Audio crackling if you don't set launch option "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command%"
Game does not minimize on Alt-tab
Works out of the box, completed a full playthrough
I tested the current version 1.15 of the game, it has some jank/glitches with mechanics and graphics. But no Proton specific problems, it works the same as on Windows.
Game crashes during initial loading screen.
The game won't start.
Game won't start, nothing happens. Tried different Proton launch options and disabling overlays.
Games launcher starts where you can choose to play or configure the game. But clicking on either of those options nothing happens. Tried with different Proton launch options.
Still crashes during the first loading screen, no launch options help.
Font rendering in the launcher now looks correct again, but still game crashes during loading screen.
Works perfectly out of the box, tried the game both in fullscreen and windowed mode.
Out of the box game gets stuck in a black screen when a cut-scene is supposed to be played. Game works perfectly if installing media foundation files: colorcnv.dll mf.dll mferror.dll mfplat.dll mfplay.dll mfreadwrite.dll msmpeg2adec.dll msmpeg2vdec.dll sqmapi.dll. Rating this borked because those files are not free to distribute.
Installed Media Foundation (mf-install)
You have no control when playing back found footage (pause/rewind/forward).
Being unable to properly examine found footage makes the game practically unplayable.
Game crashed once entering a cut-scene, tried the second time with (PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 taskset -c 1-12 %command%) launch option. And the got past the cut-scene, not sure if any of those options actually made difference or if it was just a random crash.
With latest Proton GE cust-scenes play without the need for mf-install. However in Chapter 3 you can't control the video footage with the camcorder.
Playable up to Chapter 3
Game locks up on found footage camcorder scenes trying to rewind/forward video
Works out of the box in Proton now, but only up to the point you find "found footage" and try to forward/rewind the tape.
OPENSSL_ia32cap=0x20000000 %command%
unable to progress story because forward/rewind on camcorder does not work
Because of an OpenSSL related bug the game does not launch/crashes directly on recent Intel CPU's. The launch option fixes that, but game still remains unplayable after a certain point in the game.
Controls are broken, both on KB+M and controller. With mouse horizontal direction is not registered, with controller game moves in one direction constantly.
Game works but have to manually change language each time playing.
Game changes to Vietnamese each launch. To change back to English select "cài đặt" from the main menu, then select English from the "ngôn ngữ" dropdown menu.
Performance is worse than one would expect for the graphics. On my setup had to lower settings to "medium" to maintain 60fps at 1440p during gameplay. With "high" settings could only get 30fps.
Played through entire game without issues
Worked out of the box with default Proton, including the videos
Game work fine except that the sound is glitchy, adding launch option "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command%" fixes the problem.
Completed a full playthrough without issues, works out of the box
Runs with good perfromance and did not encounter any bugs (played version 1.0.2)
Configuration tool works, but game itself won't start. Tried 32bit and 64bit version and different Proton launch options.
Configuration tool launches, but the game itself won't start. Tried both 32bit and 64bit version and different Proton launch options.
Game won't start, tried different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays.
Works without problems out of the box. The only issue is that it launches always minimized so you have to bring up the screen manually.
Game won't start, tried different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays.
Game won't start, launches to a white blank screen and then closes. Proton launch options did not make any difference.
Game hangs on a white screen
Game gets to the title screen, and when hitting enter the screen goes white and the game hangs. With older Proton version 5.13-6 it was possible to play the game, but all the videos are missing.
Runs perfectly, tested also that game survives switching between windowed/minized and fullscreen.
Game is playable with good performance, but cut-scene videos are skipped (WMV3/WMAP format). Also Nintendo Switch Pro controller worked fine.
Game was not playable
Intro videos partially works now, but was not able to get into gameplay as I did with older Proton versions.
Cut-scene videos do not play, and game is unplayable because screen goes black
Correction to my previous report, I do not recommend this game. Because out of the box cut-scene videos do not work. And the game goes black so only the hud is visible. It is unplayable in current state with default Proton, it can be made fully functional with old mfplat workarounds and Proton versions but it is not worth the hassle.
Game is playable now again, but the main story videos are not working with regular Proton
With Proton GE videos play but are missing sound
Game works now out of the box using default Proton
The cut scene and intro videos are working too, both audio and video (assuming you have not disabled Steams shader pre-caching for whatever reason)
Game crashes on launch
Launches to a black screen, then crashes with an error message.
Played through the whole game without any Proton specific issues
With current v1.1.1 of the game, graphics glitch may occur if your monitor is not 16:9 aspect ratio, this happens on Windows too. Game does not have any built-in resolution options, but to workaround this you can force the game to launch in a specific resolution by setting a Steam launch option, for example for 2560x1440 resolution set launch option "-screen-fullscreen 1 -screen-width 2560 -screen-height 1440"
Game is playable out of the box with good performance
With the current v1.2 of the game, I did once encounter an issue with the "hot spot" of the pointer/center being shifted (so you have to click slightly off center to interact with any objects on the screen).
I have seen this exact same problem occur before with some other Unity engine games (on Windows too), I believe this is a bug that can occur on non 16:9 aspect ratio resolutions. Setting a 16:9 resolution from my experience solves it, on games that don't have resolution options (like this game) it can be done by setting a Steam launch command for example "-screen-fullscreen 1 -screen-width 1920 -screen-height 1080"
Actual gameplay works both with keyboard and controller. But enabling AA results in no video/black screen. Enabling Fullscreen causes the video to be stretched beyond the screen, alt+tab between desktop and back to the game fixes it.
Works out of the box, rating this platinum for now but with reservations. Controls with a controller did feel odd (but this appears to be a problem with the game in the first place judging by Steam forum posts). there is also a VHS like glitch effect when pausing the game, that I can't tell if it is an actual bug or a feature.
Game works out of the box, completed a full playthrough
Did not encounter any issues, performance was good as expected for retro style graphics
Works perfectly out of the box both fullscreen and windowed. Note that there are glitches with the graphics in resolutions beyond 1080p, but that is a problem with the game itself.
Works out of the box without issues
Everything appears to work, including videos and controller support
Game gets stuck on loading screen, despite workarounds
Had to install media foundation workaround (mf-install) and limit cores "taskset -c 1-8 %command%" to get to the main menu. At the main menu sound was not working and starting the game got stuck on the loading screen loading forever.
I have seen mentions of the audio missing and loading screen stuck issue from Windows users too on Steam forums. Some suggested reinstalling Visual C++ 2015 could solve the problem. I tried reinstalling "vcrun2015" with Winetricks but it did not make any difference.
Proton 5.8-GE-1-MF (https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases/tag/5.8-GE-1-MF)
As of custom Proton-5.8-GE-1-MF the game works including the videos (no need for the old mf-install fix).
OPENSSL_ia32cap=0x20000000 %command%
The crashes can be fixed with launch option OPENSSL_ia32cap=0x20000000 %command%
Proton-GE is needed to for videos to be displayed properly. Game also frequently crashes on Intel Alder Lake CPU's because of a OpenSSL related bug in the game. The crashes can be fixed with launch option OPENSSL_ia32cap=0x20000000 %command%
Game works in DX9 using launch option "PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%". Without the D9VK launch option there are graphical glitches. DX10 does not work at all, no video just a black screen.
Everything works except for a few short cut-scenes that are skipped.
There are a few short comic-book style cut-scenes on some chapters that are skipped. They don't add much to the game, just missing out on some context. If I did not know they existed I would not even have noticed.
Runs without problems out of the box and with good performance. First mission played is slightly stuttery (assuming the stutters occur until shader cache is built). I tried to look for graphics/texture glitches mentioned in one other report, but could not spot any errors.
Game works perfectly except that in the beginning of most chapters there is supposed to be a short comic-book style cut-scene, but it is skipped with Proton. Majority of the story is told in-game, so most people would not even notice. The videos are available in the installation folder as WMV files.
Game detects resolution wrong, workaround set "-windowed" mode as Steam launch option, start the game (it defaults to a low resolution) and then you can select whatever resolution you want. Intro and cut-scene videos are black, but can be skipped by just pressing enter. In-game graphics were heavily glitched to the point of being unplayable, missing textures etc.. Tried different Proton launch options but made no difference. Also tried Proton 3.7-8 to make sure this is not a regression and got same results. Even if the previous guys reports did not experience issues with the graphics in-game, this would still be Silver at best because of missing videos.
DX9 is playable but the shadows have graphical glitches. DX10 version has no video just a black screen, different launch options made no difference.
Game opens up in a black screen/no video, but you can hear music/sound and that pressing keys do something. Tried launch options and disabling overlays made no difference.
Recommending forcing Proton because the Linux native build has issues switching between desktop/game
Completed a playthrough using Proton. Game does have a native Linux build (not advertised on the Steam page) that was installed by default, but alt+tab (switching between game/desktop) does not work on it. So currently game works better using Proton.
Standard game and Evolution DLC works out of the box
Did not encounter any issues, good performance and no issues with both the standard game and the evolution DLC.
Won't start, tried different launch options and disabling overlays. This game did launch for me before, so something must have changed in Proton or Mesa drivers.
Works without issues with default Proton now, including the videos.
Everything works now with the default Proton including the videos (the transcoded videos are downloaded during install/shadercache update).
Works perfectly, also tested that the game survives switching between windowed/fullscreen and minimizing.
OPENSSL_ia32cap=0x20000000 %command%
Game is affected by a Unreal Engine 4 OpenSSL SHA bug. Game crashes on Intel 10th gen or later CPU's unless you use a launch option.
Worked out of the box with good performance
The game crashes on launch using D9VK, but that is not the default option on Proton.
Game won't start, nothing happens. Tried different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays.
Game works perfectly, tested also switching between desktop/game, and running in windowed/fullscreen mode.
No video, just a black screen with audio, likely because game uses mfplat for videos.
Everything works out of the box. Windowed and fullscreen mode, Controller support (tried with Nintendo Switch Pro controller). Good performance a solid 60fps at all times.
Works out of the box including controller, game defaulted to Japanese language
Game works out of the box, it defaulted to Japanese language though. Not sure if that is the expected behaviour, however as the menues are bi-lingual English/Japanese it was easy to change. Also I did not experience any problems with 8BitDo Pro 2 controller.
With 4.2-3 the game runs out of the box, the only Proton specific issue is that the source engine menu font is poorly rendered. However the game has many other bugs that also occur on windows (see https://cry-of-fear.fandom.com/wiki/Bugs_and_Glitches). I ran into the flashlight not working bug, and the fixes suggested for Windows did not work. So rating it silver because of a minor issue that occurs only with Proton. But game was practically unplayable after a certain point because of pre-existing bugs with the game.
Works out of the box but game has flaws
About 48fps everything maxed at 1600p. However game does not perform well on Windows either.
Game will not launch
Nothing happens trying to launch the game, tried with different Proton launch options, D9VK and installing PhysX and Media Foundation.
Game won't start, nothing happens
Proton log is completely empty leaving no clue why game is not working. But reportedly this game works on Lutris, I think it needs a Win32 prefix and PhysX. Game has never worked for me out of the box either on Windows either, I remember having to install/copy some PhysX dll file manually to make it run.
Worked without any issues, tried also fullscreen/windowed and switching between game and desktop.
Works perfectly, tried fullscreen and windowed, and switching between desktop and the game.
Game works perfectly except switching between fullscreen and windowed in-game is glitchy (needed to switch between desktops to bring up the screen again.
Works out of the box, completed full playthrough without issues
Game uses UE5 and is demanding on highest graphic quality settings. There are many upscaling options available though.
Won't start, tried with different proton launch options, and disabling Steam overlay.
Works without issues out of the box
This game used to not work for me on old Proton versions, but now runs without problems. Good performance on my setup.
Works out of the box, including online connectivity
Alt-Tab does not minimize the game, regardless if you have set it to Borderless or Fullscreen mode.
Game works perfectly and with good performance, except controller input is not detected (Nintendo Switch Pro Controller over Bluetooth).
As of game updated to version 1.1 everything works perfectly out of the box, including Nintendo Switch Pro controller over bluetooth. Performance is also great.
Works out of the box without issues
Runs with good performance and so far I have not experienced any crashes or stability issues
Proton GE 6.20-GE-1
Crashed once during loading screen
With regular Proton the launcher/login screen did not work/was plain white. With Proton GE the launcher worked and I was able to sign in and launch the game. There are some intro videos so you might need GE anyway for those.
The settings configuration application lists no resolutions, and had glitchy behavior when changing settings, also throws .net pop-up error messages (those could just be ignored). Other than that the game seemingly works, except that it crashed once on a loading screen and had a dropped connection. I think there are a bit too many issues to be considered an enjoyable experience.
All modes except story are playable. With good performance locked 60fps at 2560x1440 resolution with everything maxed. 16:10 resolutions are not listed/detected, so game when booting stretches the video to 2560x1600 (having to manually apply 1440p resolution each time to get correct aspect ratio). Some stuttering when shader state caching first time playing with/against any character and stage, but from then on it is fine. Nintendo Switch Pro controller was detected and worked fine over bluetooth. Rating bronze because of the non playable Story Mode , otherwise the experience was plattinum.
The game won't start
Works out of the box, completed full playthrough
The game has no settings for vsync/framerate, when playing on desktop Linux you can set launch option "DXVK_FRAME_RATE=60 %command%" to limit framerate (on Steam Deck you can adjust the framerate using the Steam overlay).
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
GE is needed for fixing videos, the launch option fixes graphics glitching during loading screens
Game launches to a blank screen, hit alt+enter to get enter windowed mode to see anything. In main menu pointer is misaligned, to select any option you have to point several pixels below the options. Game also has distorted/crackling sound.
Game works except that switching between windowed and fullscreen mode does not work.
Game works in Fullscreen, but switching to windowed mode there is just a black screen.
With default Proton there was stutter, with experimental did not have that issue.
Game runs fine except for that the controls and camera are a bit off. You have to reduce mouse acceleration and camera sensitivity, but that is a flaw of the game and no different to playing it natively. However the camera keeps pulling down ever so slightly when walking forward, this does not occur when playing on native.
Works perfectly out of the box, but just like on windows you need to reduce mouse sensitivity. The mouse floating issue has been fixed as of this Proton version.
Works perfectly and with great performance especially with D9VK and ACO. However switching back and forth between desktop/game, fullscreen/windowed mode has some issues.
After the main menu and intro/story slides, game gets stuck in "syncing cloud data" and will not proceed. Tried beta and main branch of the game.
Works perfectly except with an unusually large performance hit, guesstimate about 35%. Rating this silver just in case, but from every other aspect except performance the game is platinum.
Stalls on first launch, but after that works without issues and with good performance
The first launch of the game stalls
Note that after installation the first launch of the game stalls and nothing happens. And you have to stop and restart the game. I think this is Epic Online Services related, because game attempts to run an EOS updater on launch. The game only stalls the first time, the second launch the EOS updater shows up and updates successfully.
Other than this inconvenience, the game works well and with good performance.
Game won't start, tried with different Proton launch options.
Stuttering loading in new scenes/areas
Proton-GE is only needed to fix a splash screen video. There is some stuttering traversing to new areas, but other than that performs okay.
Frequent stuttering
With default Proton the game has random crashes. With experimental it is playable without crashes, but with frequent stuttering. Some of the stuttering I think is because of problems with the game itself. This is probably the worst case of stuttering I have seen in a game. Therefore I do not consider this game enjoyable in current state.
Complete speed run of the game, everything worked out of the box without any issues. Performance is like native and no launch options were needed.
The game is playable with a few small barely noticeable audio glitches. However it does crash on exit with a "LowLevelFatalError" error message.
Played through whole game without issues, except for janky controls
With 8BitDo Pro 2 controller, the directional analog control does not always register all the way. This could though be a problem with the game itself, as I have seen reviews from Windows users complaining about poor controls.
You need very recent Mesa drivers for flawless graphics. With older drivers the game works, but there is a minor graphical glitch with hair rendering on a character.
Playable with "PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%" launch option, but with a poor framerate.
Works out of the box perfectly, some stuttering during shader state caching (but that is to be expected).
Early access version works out of the box without Proton specific issues
Played early access version 0.4.361, there is as expected some jank and bugs, but nothing seemingly Proton specific.
Poor performance in some areas of the game
Performance is inconsistent, some areas of the game are significantly more demanding. But other than that the game worked fine, I was also able to play the epilogue (used current Proton Experimental bleeding-edge branch).
Only issue is that the game launches fullscreen borderless windowed with the cinnamon taskbar visible. Other than that the game works without problems.
Runs like native but the first run in is stuttery (presumably shader cache is being built). The UI does not display correctly on resolutions beyond 1080p, but that is also a problem on windows.
Won't start nothing happens, tried different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays.
Game won't start, tried all the different Proton launch options and also forcing older Proton 3.16-4.
Works out of the box, but the first time the game launched the resolution was wrong, and the video glitched. But after setting the resolution in the options everything looked fine. Performance is great, there I had one random crash to desktop while playing the game (after the very first savepoint). However rating the game Platinum because I believe these were bugs with the game in the first place.
Runs without issues and with similar performance as like native windows, switching between game/desktop also worked fine.
Everything worked perfectly out of the box, including Nintendo Switch Pro controller.
Game crashes without it.
Without launch option "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%" game will not work. Just launches to a black screen and then crashes.
Game is playable but videos are missing
Videos do not play
Videos are skipped (they are seamlessly integrated in the game, so you may not notice until later). With custom Proton-5.11-GE-1-MF all videos except one I believe worked. As the story is so central to the game, I would not recommend it before all videos worked.
Game is playable, but can be difficult to complete because of crashes
Crashes near the end if you stay in an area a while
Near the end of the game when you get to the VHS store and find the tape at the back of the store. You have about 1 minute to get to the next room or the game crashes. After seeing the VHS tape on the table, go to the counter and interact with the man, skip all dialogue as fast as you can, get rid of the man and head on to the next room.
Made several attempts with both default Proton and experimental, the game crashes everytime at that spot if taking too long. This might be a bug with the game and not Proton, some reviews mentioned crashes.
Out of the box works without any issues
Works as expected with good performance, I did not spot any issues.
Game works fine but the controls are messed up. With a controller (Nintendo Switch Pro) the game keeps pulling left all the time. With a keyboard it is playable but the layout is really unusual/inconvenient. These appear to be problems on Windows too judging by all the Steam forum posts.
"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library" error message on launch, clicking ignore a few time the game launches and runs fine.
Error message "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library" when launching the game. Need to click ignore a few time to make the game load, the game itself is then playable..
Game launches but usually crashes when you hit start, but sometimes the level loads but crashes after a few seconds of gameplay.
Game works up to the main menu, but crashes when hitting start. Different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays made no difference.
Game launches, but at the main menu crashes when selecting to start new game. Different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays made no difference.
The game crashes when selecting start new game (just ike before with my hardware). Sometimes the game may crash even before that right when the main menu shows up. Launch options made no difference.
Game works perfectly out of the box without crashes, good performance. Tested fullscreen, windowed and borderless mode. Nintendo Switch Pro controller works, switching between desktop/game works.
Game works perfectly out of the box, hence the Platinum rating. However note that with D9VK the game crashes when starting a new game.
Crashes on launch on Intel 12th gen CPU (Alder Lake)
The game crashes on lauch, tried different Proton versions and limiting CPU cores. This is a finicky/buggy game that on my older AMD threadripper system only worked on a few proton versions. On this Alder Lake System I have so far not found any Proton/Launch option configuration that works.
Game crashes on launch on some systems unless you use launch option to limit threads/cores
WINE_CPU_TOPOLOGY=4:0,1,2,3 %command%
With the launch option the game launches and works fine. Only systems that have CPU's with a high core count appear to have this problem.
Both the main game Downfall (2016 remake) and the original (2009 version) that is included work just as well as on Windows. Tried both fullscreen and windowed, and also loading and saving games. However note that these games are running on the buggy AGS engine. With both games set them to use maximum size sprite cache or they may be crash. Steam overlay will not work with sofware rendering. The 2009 version can refuse to run if you use anything but the default 640x480 resolution and no filtering. And both games may sometimes just hang when launching having to kill the process and re-launch the game. Still rating this Proton platinum, because these are all bugs and issues that exist on the windows version.
Force use of Proton to override non functional Linux version
The game sometimes does not launch. Toggling between fullscreen/windowed mode in the setup/config launcher appears to fix that.
The game has a native Linux version that does not work on recent distros. You need to force Proton or else Steam will download and try to run the Linux version.
Protip: Some of the games in the collection do not have a frame rate cap or vsync. Use launch option "DXVK_FRAME_RATE=60 %command%" to limit the framerate to 60fps.
The Book of Blood often crashes on launch
This is a collection of games, Hunsvotti has broken videos unless you use Proton Experimental (bleeding edge) or GE. The Book of Blood often crashes on launch.
Tip: A couple of the games in the collection do not have vsync/frame rate cap, use launch option "DXVK_FRAME_RATE=60 %command%" to limit framerate to 60fps.
WINE_DO_NOT_CREATE_DXGI_DEVICE_MANAGER=1 %command%
One of the games "The Fruit" always crashes the display driver at a specific spot (hard reset needed). "Axis Mundi" requires the launch option or the intro video is glitched.
Game appears to work now out of the box including the videos
With current Proton the videos in "Axis Mundi" are working, and I was not able to replicate the crash in "The Fruit". Though there are reports from Windows users that "The Fruit" is unstable, so the problems I reported previously can have been unrelated to Proton and it just a matter of luck.
As for "Rose of Meat", there is a previous report of content missing, but I have been unable to see/confirm this so that may have been resolved too.
Windows version works perfectly out of the box using Proton (Linux native version does not work)
Needed to install Media Foundation for videos (mf-install the standard not the cab variant)
Game works but skips videos unless you install media foundation. Also on with a CPU with more than 8 cores had to limit threads/cores used by using launch option "taskset -c 1-12 %command%". Otherwise the videos would not play despite installing media foundation.
Debatable if this should be a thumbs up report, I'm rating it up because the videos are not so important in this game.
Works out of the box now without tweaks, including the videos
Tweaks are no longer needed, videos work out of the box and game no longer crashes with CPU's that have more cores.
Works perfectly out of the box with good performance. Also the mouse jumping/floating issue has been fixed in this Proton version.
Game crashes without launch option "PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%". Hiowever game has some minor graphical glitches even with that option..
Works out of the box with good performance
Game with this Proton version no longer crashes out of the box, also the graphics are rendered correctly using D9VK too.
Launching the game there is splash screen window, followed by a completely black window and nothing more happens. Different launch options made no difference.
Game works but always starts minimized, sometimes has graphical glitches and performance is poor.
Out of the box playable but with graphical artifacts, with D9VK the games graphics are too glitchy to be playable. Also there the sound is crackling.
Game works perfectly with launch option "PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command%". This fixes both poor performance and audio crackling. Also no longer seeing any graphical corruption. The only reason I'm not rating this Gold is because of the game always launching minimized.
Works out of the box, completed full playthrough without issues
The game runs with good performance. Note though there seems to be a bug that the graphics quality setting resets after restarting the game.
Game is playable out of the box using current Proton Experimental
Game launches minimized/in the background, have to bring it up manually from the taskbar / alt+tab
Game won't start, tried different Proton launch options and disabling steam overlays.
Game works perfectly, tried also windowed and fullscreen, and also switching between game/desktop.
In fullscreen there is graphical glitches, windowed is playable but when exiting the game it crashes with an "Access violation" error message and you have to manually kill the process.
Game is playable except for that videos/cut-scenes are skipped. Essentially this makes the game unplayable because all context in the story is missing.
Game works except videos are skipped (that are necessary to understand this game). Manually installing media foundation fixes the videos making the game work perfectly, however rating bronze because those are not freely distributable files and IMO goes beyond just a tweak.
Game works out of the box now including videos, but needs launch option on recent Intel CPU's
OPENSSL_ia32cap=0x20000000 %command%
Game crashes on recent Intel CPU's because of a OpenSSL related bug in Unreal Engine versions 4.13-4.21 (see issue #5830 on the Proton github). Note that this is a bug that affects also Windows users on these systems. If you have an AMD CPU, the launch option is not needed.
Flawless out of the box, great performance and no audio issues. Also worked fine with Nintendo Switch Pro controller.
Worked without any issues, tried also switching between the game and the desktop.
Game won't start, tried different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays.
Won't start, tried with different Proton launch option, disabling Steam overlays and forcing windowed/fullscreen.
Game won't start, nothing happens. Tried different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays.
Game won't start nothing happens, tried different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays.
Launching the game, games splash screen window pops up, but then nothing more happens. Different Proton launch options made no difference.
Game always always launches minimized. You have to click up the games screen and hit alt+enter twice to get video. Game forgets your resolution settings on launch, but that it does on Windows too. Other than that it works perfectly on Proton now.
Works without problems, except for a small issue having to bring up the games screen using alt+tab on launch.
Games screen opens in the background on KDE desktop, so you have to Alt+TAB to bring it to front
Full game currently needs Proton Experimental. Games text to speech feature does not work, but it is optional and not needed to play.
The current full Early Access version of the game (patch 2.1196.0) needs Proton Experimental to load properly (unlike the demo). I have completed 3 out of 5 ending without issues. Note that the game has a TTS (Text to Speech) feature that does not work with Proton. However most would probably not play with it enabled anyway.
Game crashes on launch
On launch a window opens and then directly closes. Same occurs also with Proton-GE. Several reports from Windows users on Steam forums of the game not launching, so perhaps this is a bug with the game and not Proton.
Unplayable, game instantly crashes on launch
Game crashes during launch, empty window opens and closes directly. No difference with Proton experimental or GE.
Launches to a black window and nothing happens
Now the blank window remains open until manually closing it, before it closed immediately by itself.
Does not work, still just an empty black window appears on launch
Game is still not working, curiously SELinux (Security-Enhanced Linux) spams a lot of warnings when attempting to launch the game.
Game is completely borked, will not launch just a black screen
Tried also Proton-GE but it made no difference.
Game runs but is missing menu/prompt fonts. Most likely fixable by installing fonts through tricks.
Works perfectly out of the box (text is displayed and no mouse issues as of this Proton version)
Works without any obvious proton specific problems
The game is janky so difficult to judge, but there are some audio "clicks/pops" that could be perhaps be proton specific issues.
Game won't start nothing happens, tried different Proton launch options without success.
PROTON_NO_D3D12=1 %command%
On first launch game displayed windowed despite Fullscreen was selected. To get the game to switch into fullscreen had to select a resolution lower than native and save. Then one after that could switch back to native resolution and the game remained in fullscreen.
Without ProtonGE and the launch option, there was just a black screen when starting the game. Needing to disable DirectX12 seems illogical, but for some reason it made a difference on my setup.
Fullscreen mode does not work (game stays windowed), used Borderless instead.
Game is playable with Proton Hotfix/Experimental too, but is currently missing the videos. So for best experience use GE.
When launching the game there is a .net installation and then nothing happens, the game won't start. Tried different Proton launch options but it did not make any difference.
OPENSSL_ia32cap=0x20000000 %command%
The launch option is for fixing game crashes with recent Intel CPU's because of a OpenSSL related bug in Unreal Engine. This bug is not Proton/Linux specific, Windows gamers are affected too. See issue #5830 on the Proton github for more details.
Works flawlessly, also tested that game survives switching between fullscreen/windowed and minimizing.
Game is playable but switching between game and desktop does not always work (an error message window pops up about keyboard device being locked, and the games process is killed).
Works OOTB without issues
Works without issues and with good performance out of the box.
Works out of the box with good performance
Did not spot any issues, tested the most recent update "patch 1" (may 9 2024) of the game.
Played through the whole game without any issues
Game works out of the box without issues, including the videos. On my setup at 1440p resolution maxed settings got around 140fps.
some occasional audio "clicks/pops"
There were occasional "clicks/pops" with the audio, that could be fixed by setting launch option "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=250 %command%"
Changed audio output device
Game detects wireless bluetooth speaker output as microphone input
Game detects if you make noise in a microphone when hiding from enemies. This only becomes relevant in the last chapter. Problem is that the game seems to detect wireless bluetooth speaker output as microphone input (making you fail at hiding). To workaround this I had to disable blueooth speaker(switch to using a regular analog headphone. This is likely a niche scenario that most people will not encounter.
Game worked without problems out of the box
At one spot the game detects if you make noise when you there is a microphone connected. Don't know if it works because I do not have a microphone to test with (it is not required to play the game).
Works out of the box, completed a full playthrough of v1.6
Game detects Bluetooth speaker output as microphone input. Making you fail hiding sequences, have to switch to a regular analog headset/speaker for those sections.
All the previous Fears to Fathom also have the same problem with bluetooth speaker being detected as a microphone. Easy enough to workaround though, by switching audio output to something else.
Won't start, nothing happens, tried different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays.
Works out of the box without any issues
No tweaks were necessary, game runs with good performance.
The game has lots of bugs and glitches in the first place, seemingly no additional issues under Proton.
Won't start nothing happens, tried different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays.
Black screen and nothing happens
Can't reach the main menu, tried installing mfplat and limiting cores, windowed/fullscreen, different resolutions.. but nothing helped.
Game works perfectly in Fullscreen, also tried with a Nintendo Switch Pro controller. In Windowed mode game is unplayable because the window is stuck off-screen.
Game works perfectly except that if switching between fullscreen/windowed mode, and then trying to move around the Window it glitches out. And window gets stuck beyond visible screen area.
Works out of the box, no issues switching between fullscreen and windowed with this Proton version.
Game works perfectly out of the box. Tried also alt+tabbing and minimizing and bringing up the game again.
Works out of the box, completed a full playthrough without any issues
Performance was also good
Game works with decent performance and audio is now also fine out of the box (was broken with earlier Proton versions). The only reason I'm rating silver is because the video billboards don't work.
Game works fine except that videos don't play (intro, track preview and in-game video billboards)
Works out of the box, completed full playthrough. I recommend disabling "Camera Smoothing" when playing with KB&M
Works perfectly out of the box now with default Proton, no tweaks necessary. But I recommend disabling Camera Smoothing in the games settings, because it makes mouse input feel unresponsive/laggy.
On my setup with maxed graphics quality, for stable 60fps at 1440p had to enable FSR2 in Quality mode. Because there are some sections of the game that are more demanding.
Game is playable, but has distorted audio, if a controller is connected the game keeps moving in a direction. Some screen prompts are missing.
Video is glitched, game launches in a partially visible screen, needing to switch between windowed/desktop or alt+tabbing between game and desktop to bring up the whole screen.
Works out of the box, completed a full playthrough
Note there are some small text/details in the games environment that add some context to the story. You will likely miss out on those details if playing on a small screen like on portable handhelds.
Game launches always minimized so you have to bring up the screen. After the first cut-scene game gets stuck loading indefinitely. Different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays made no difference.
Forced to use Proton 3.16-8, otherwise the game downloads a dysfunctional Linux version (not advertised on Steam). Windows version works through Proton perfectly and with good performance, both in Windowed and in fullscreen and with good performance. Nintendo Switch Pro Controller works too.
Works well with performance better than last time I tried it on windows. A couple of stutters the first time playing a track during when shader state cache is built, but subsequent plays are fine. Audio was also flawless with this Proton version. Nintendo Switch Pro controller also tested and working. The only issue I found was in audio/music options, when clicking on play to preview a music track it does nothing. This I believe however is a bug in the game on Windows too, so I'm still rating this platinum.
Game won't start nothing happens, tried different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays.
Nothing happens game won't start, tried also with different Proton launch options.
Game won't start, nothing happens. The drivers that I tried with are the most recent SteamVR PPA that have the transform feedback extension.
Won't start, "wine C++ runtime library" error message pops up on launch. Disabling Steam overlays and trying different launch options made no difference.
Everything works without problems and with good performance. Game also survives being minimized, switching between desktop windowed and fullscreen.
Nothing happens when trying to run the game, tried different launch options and disabling overlays. Also launching the games "display configuration" does nothing either.
Videos do not play (displays an error message, but still proceeds), but game is otherwise playable.
Works perfectly, tried both fullscreen and windowed mode. Note the controls are not defined out of the box, you need to configure them (right click on the game in Steam library and select "Configure Settings").
Runs out of the box without any problems, performance is similar to native windows.
Works perfectly without issues and with good performance. As of this Proton version the mouse controls are also precise without floating.
No Proton related issues out of the box
The game is a bit glitchy at times, like the first interaction with the bathroom stalls I thought was bugged on Proton. Had to watch gameplay on Windows to verify that it was designed that way.
Played the game using Proton Experimental bleeding edge branch. Did not spot any issues, everything worked including the in-game videos. With current default Proton the game is unplayable and hangs on a black screen during loading.
Runs perfectly and with good performance in fullscreen, also controls were fine with Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. But when switching to windowed mode the game crashes.
Works perfectly and with good performance in fullscreen, controller works too. The only issue is when switching from fullscreen to windowed mode the game crashes.
Game works with good performance, tried windowed, fullscreen, controller, alt+tab everything works except videos. Videos are just skipped and don't prevent playing the game.
On launch error message "This application requires a Java Runtime Environment 1.5.0".
Playable but with control issues
Controls are inaccurate and laggy
The game is playable but it has minor audio crackling (can be fixed with launch options), but the main issue is that the controls are glitchy. Especially with mouse and keyboard some actions are almost impossible to do successfully. I have seen similar complaints from some Windows users, so this may not directly be a Proton issue, just a general problem with the PC port.
On launch Unreal Engine video plays and then error message window pops up "fatal error!" and the game crashes before entering the main menu. Different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays made no difference.
Game works perfectly out of the box with 32GB(4x8GB) RAM. With 16GB(2x8GB) the game crashes during intro logo splash screens. I suspect the problem has something to do with running dual-channel memory on Threadripper, as with quad-channel the game works fine. 16GB should have been more than enough to launch the game. I'm playing it safe and rating this Gold for now, it is possible that this is not a Proton issue at all but rather something else like Kernel/Linux/CPU/Motherboard/BIOS etc..
Works flawlessly out of the box, good raytracing performance now too with recent drivers
The raytracing performance has significantly improved on recent Mesa drivers. Can now maintain a solid 60fps at 1440p resolution using highest raytracing quality and graphics maxed without drops in performance.
Works out of the box including cut-scenes and videos
I tested also setting resolution to 1280x800 and game seems to support it properly. And there is an option for increasing in-game text size. So the game would probably be okay on a Steam Deck too.
Works out of the box, completed a playthrough without any issues
Steam Deck/portable gamers be aware that the game (current launch day version) does not clearly highlight objects you can interact with. So it can be hard to spot items especially on small screens.
Game works out of the box, including the seasonal worker DLC
Everything worked including the videos
Works out of the box without any issues, tried both windowed and fullscreen.
Game is playable, but videos do not display.
Intro/logo video does not play, screen goes black, click a mouse button for game to proceed.
The full game works out of the box except for the videos. The demo did not work at all on the same setup, crashes on launch.
Game works without issues out of the box with standard Proton
I did not encounter any issues, the videos played back properly and there were no graphical glitches. Performance is okay too even with all settings maxed.
Game works out of the box
The game now supports cloud saves since a recent update. Resolutions above 1080p are still not supported, this is not a Proton specific issue though.
Completed a full playthrough of the game without any issues
Everything worked including the cut-scene videos
Runs out of the box without any additional issues (game is buggy/glitchy in the first place)
Works out of the box, except that mouse drifts downwards slightly every button press.
Works without problems out of the box (issue with mouse pointer floating/jumping was fixed in this Proton version).
Out of the box performance is poor. With launch option "PROTON_USE_D9VK=1%command%" game works perfectly (60+ fps at 1600p resolution using ACO). You can't switch back to the desktop (game does not minimize, but you can switch the game to a secondary workspace to get around it).
Runs out of the box with performance (mediocre) similar to native. First time launching the game, there was a warning message "no audio device detected" but everything worked anyway. Not sure if this also happens the first time on Windows.
First time launching the game during the first time setup it gives a warning "no audio device detected", but works perfectly anyway out of the box. The performance does not scale much with quality settings, but with everything maxed including 8xAA I got around 50fps at 2560x1600 resolution without any stuttering.
Proton-6.10-GE-1
With regular Proton the videos do not work.
Proton-6.12-GE-1 needed to fix video playback.
Some occasional audio crackling that can be fixed by setting Steam launch option "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=120 %command%"
The game including videos works with default Proton
Fully works out of the box now with default Proton (this game used to need GE or mfplat for video fixes)
Game runs perfectly, but if you switch to windowed mode and then try to switch back to fullscreen again, the screen is off-center and only partially visible.
Like native out of the box
Works without issues, windowed/fullscreen, controller support, good performance, rumble etc... No issues at all
Works fine except there is some occasional audio pop-in/crackling, problem can be reduced with launch option "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command%"
Overall good except poor performance at a short segment
Allen tape (Part 2) there is poor performance during a ship storm/rain segment
As of writing (about 70% completition) the game has worked well with Proton. However there has been a segment in Allen tape (part 2), on a freight ship and it is raining that the performance tanks. It is luckily a approx 5-10 minute segment of exploration and no action, so it was not game breaking. But I lowered GFX settings to get comfortably past it.
Playable but the videos are skipped
The game is playable but videos are skipped (the usual mf-install fixes did not work), because of this I'm giving the game a thumbs down.
Videos are skipped (both cut-scenes and scene details) with standard Proton. With custom Proton everything works.
Game is out of the box playable but cut-scenes are just black. This can be fixed with Microsoft Media Foundation 64bit cab version.
The game runs fine out of the box, except that the controls feel a bit off, floaty and not precise.
Some minor audio pops, and if switching between desktop and game controls stop working. Otherwise game works fine (the mouse floating/drifting issues were fixed with this Proton version).
Worked fine played through the whole game
Game does not minimize on Alt+Tab
When hitting escape to enter options menu mouse pointer becomes visible until you click a mouse button. Not sure if this happens on Windows too.
Works out of the box, completed a full playthrough
Played v1.02 the game had some jank/bugs. Be aware that some text flashes past so fast you may miss an objective (hit z key in the game to show the last message). Early in the game you can throw away the knife where you can not reach it, having to restart from last checkpoint.
Game works but launches minimized with mouse pointer captured. Had to alt+tab and switch between workspaces to be able to bring up the game. Game does not exit gracefully, just hangs at a black screen.
Playable but launches minimized and captures mouse pointer. Had to alt+tab and switch between workspaces to be able to bring up the game. Game hangs on exit.
Game worked out of the box without issues
Note some of my previous reported issues with the window behaviour, may have been bugs related to the desktop environment and not Proton.
Game is playable using old Proton version but can't recommend because of videos not working.
Game crashes with recent Proton versions
Videos do not work
Game crashes with recent Proton versions. It is playable with old version 6.3-8, but is missing videos (displays a test screen/place holder).
Game works out of the box now (as of Patch 1.1) including the videos
Game received an update (patch 1.1) that fixed the previously mentioned issues with crash and missing videos. It works out of the box now with default Proton.
Game is playable out of the box but there are some stability issues
Another update to my previous reports, as of v1.1 game is playable out of the box and videos work. However I did experience some crashes after playing for a while. Game randomly crashes typically after playing for about 40-60 minutes. So make sure to save progress in the game.
Game crashed on launch using regular proton. With Proton Experimental bleeding-edge branch the game works without issues. Be aware that graphic quality settings are not available from the main menu, you have to start the game and then hit Escape key.
Note there are some black boxes in the game that may be mistaken for a graphic error (but it is by design and looks the same on Windows). There are a couple of spots in the game where the shadows flicker, but that seems to be a bug with the game and not Proton.
Works out of the box, but high QHD/4K resolutions do not display properly
Graphics were broken above 1080p resolutions, but that seems to be an issue with the game and not Proton.
The actual game works perfectly, but all text in the configuration tool is just blank boxes. So if you need to change the game settings it is going to be difficult to figure out.
Everything worked out of the box
No issues, also the configuration tool now displays correct language/characters.
Works out of the box on default Proton without problems
The game does not have proper 16:10 support, it cuts off a bit of the screen so you have to use a 16:9 aspect ratio resolution.
Works without any issues now including the videos
Game works perfectly now out of the box with regular Proton, including intro animations/videos.
Playable but has a minor launch issue
Game always launches minimized/in the background, have to Alt+tab to bring up the game.
Game launches with a black window, music plays but there is no video. Tried different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays.
Works out of the box with default Proton
With recent Proton versions there are no issues running the game
Works out of the box without issues, completed full playthrough
Note that some of the English subtitles are slighly cut-off, this happens on windows too and is a bug with the game. Steam Deck users should not that some of the text in the game is small.
Works without problems, also tested switching between game/desktop, and fullscreen/windowed mode.
Works without issues out of the box
The videos in the game also play without problems using default Proton.
Game itself works fine, but the launcher displays raw HTML code instead of rendering the page/text. Not sure if it does that on Windows too so rating it silver for now.
Works out of the box, tried with Nintendo Switch Pro controller, windowed and fullscreen. Full playthrough.
Game randomly crashes after a couple of minutes, different Proton launch options and disabling overlays made no difference.
Playable out of the box, but current version has some bugs.
Launch version of the game may softlock
Game can softlock at a couple of spots forcing you to restart the game. Happened to me on current version 1.2r. This is a bug with the game and not Proton though, as it happens on Windows too. Dev is working on a patch to fix it.
Launches to a black screen and then nothing happens, tried different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays, made no difference.
Game won't launch without setting launch option "-onethread", also videos are skipped.
Game is playable now without launch options, but videos are not played. Manually installing media foundation fixes the videos, rating this silver because those are not freely distributable files and IMO goes beyond a tweak.
OPENSSL_ia32cap=0x20000000 %command%
Because of an OpenSSL related bug in Unreal Engine 4.13-4.21, you need to set the launch option for the game to work on recent Intel CPU's (as detailed in github issue #5830). The launch option is only needed on those CPU's.
There might be a problem with the very last ending videos according to a github comment, but I have not been able to confirm that (there are several different endings too..). If there is a problem, it would probably work by using Proton-GE as a workaround.
Runs perfectly, tried both windowed and fullscreen mode, also switching between desktop/game.
Unable to progress past ending of Episode 2
Game crashes at the end of Episode 2
Game gets stuck on a black screen/crashes at the ending of Episode 2. No difference with Proton GE or Experimental
Unable to get past episode 2 ending
Some minor graphical glitches with relfections/lights
Always crashes during ending of Episode 2
Game still crashes during episode 2 ending. Have tried a bunch of things like limiting CPU cores and SSL fixes. I believe results vary depending on if you sucessfully saved a certain person (like I did because that changes the ending cut-scene).
I have no reason to believe this issue is Proton specific, as I have seen gamers on Windows reporting the same crashes. I think the variable here is what kind of actions you take during your gameplay.
Works the same as on Windows, almost unplayable because of all the bugs
Game after the most recent update is even buggier than when it launched. Lots of animations are missing, t-poses, levitating characters and graphical glitches.
Works out of the box, completed a full playthrough without issues
With maxed settings game is demanding and would run at around 45-60fps @1440p on my setup. Some scenes when using the time line "echo" ability have about a 30% performance drop.
Note that I am using a 6.6 LTS kernel, because of rare random crashes with recent regular kernels with the 7900 GRE.
Completed game with Proton, had to lower some settings for stability
The game appeared to run first at solid 60fps maxed "Cinematic" settings. But after a while performance tanks and game crashes. So perhaps there is a leak/game eats up all the vram. I lowered some of the settings to very high instead, and set to lower resolution scaling for a stable experience.
-force-d3d12
Some textures/shadows flicker out of the box, had to force the game to use DX12 to solve the problem. Use Steam Launch option "-force-d3d12", the game looks slightly too bright in DX12 mode so I suggest turning down the brightness in the games options.
Game works out of the box same as on Windows (including the graphics glitches)
Some minor shadow/texture flickering, these issues occur on Windows too
This is an update to my previous report, there are some spots in the game where the texture/shadows flicker. One can solve that issue by forcing DX12 with Steam Launch option "-force-d3d12". However doing that appears to disable some of the antialiasing and slightly changes the brightness levels. So you might be better off just playing the game with the occasional graphical glitches, hopefully the shadow/texture flickers are patched in some future update to the game.
Works out of the box, completed both endings
When clicking around in the game there is sometimes a small graphical glitch where you can see the KDE desktop for a split second. This does not happen when playing the game using gamescope (so by default this issue would not occur on Steam Deck)
Works without issues in Fullscreen. Alt+Enter to Windowed mode does not work, switching to windowed there is just a black screen.
Out of the box game crashes on launch. But with launch option "-onethread" game worked fine with good performance, also Nintendo Switch Pro controller support worked.
Game works fine windowed, in fullscreen mode not the whole screen is visible. Also switching between windowed mode and fullscreen while in-game the screen glitches.
Works perfectly out of the box. Tried both windowed and full-screen, also switching between desktop and game worked fine.
Resubmitting report: Changing from Platinum to Silver because I spotted a minor issue. Played through full game one and a half times, game works out of the box but there is a scene where you can watch TV or there is a TV in the background. Supposed to be video played on the TV but with Proton it just appears to be off. Purely cosmetic and does not prevent or have any significance on the story/gameplay. Performance is decent, with maxed settings at 2560x1600 resolution, majority of the game was running at solid 60fps. There is an area late in the game where the performance dropped to about 20fps.
Game works well out of the box with default Proton
Some scenes in 1440p resolution can have a drop in framerate to around 30-40fps range on my system.
Everything including the scenes with TV videos and camcorder footage works correctly now with default Proton. There are some scenes with performance issues, but not as bad as it used to be.
Works perfectly out of the box with good performance, a solid 120fps.
Works the same as on Windows out of the box.
There is a bug with the games audio settings. You have to adjust audio level in the options first time launching the game (just move the volume slider a notch, so that the volume settings are saved). Unless you do this, the in-game audio will be completely silent (even though the volume looks maxed). This bug affects Windows users too.
Good performance, works the same as on windows. Be aware of the volume level bug as mentioned and that there is no autosave, it can take some time to reach the first save point.
Game works fine except if you minimize the window you can't bring up the game again (opens up again in a tiny window where you can't see anything)
Playable completed a full playthrough, there were some performance issues and bugs.
Warehouse area in the game has has really poor performance. But the rest of the game is fine.
Played the launch day release, be aware that it has a couple of game breaking bugs that are not proton/linux specific.
There is a couple of spots early in the game where you can break sequence/get stuck in a situation you can't recover from. If that happens you have to delete the savegame/compatdata folder and start over (just restarting a new game from within the game was not enough to fix it, deleting the savegame was necessary).
Another issue with the game is that it forgets your graphics quality options each restart, so you have to manually change them everytime.
Works out of the box, completed full playthrough
There are some minor graphical glitches in the game, it looks the same though on Windows so it is not a Proton bug.
Works out of the box without issues, completed a full playthrough
Did not spot any problems, game runs as expected with good performance.
Game won't start, tried with different Proton launch options.
Works out of the box without any issues
Not seeing any problems with the game on recent Proton versions, performance is good as expected.
Game works fine except that it crashes randomly, not sure if this is a bug in the game or Proton.
Works without any issues
Worked out of the box without any issues and with good performance.
Won't start, on launch games splash screen is displayed, followed by a crash with a "UE4 Fatal Error!" message.
Game works out of the box, completed full play through
The game has janky potato graphics, sometimes it may look glitched but I have compared that it looks the same on Windows.
Works perfectly, tried both fullscreen and windowed mode, also switching between game and desktop.
Playable but can not recommend because videos are not working
The game is playable with default Proton, but videos are not working and I think that ruins the atmosphere in a horror game. Note that the game hangs/freezes with Proton-GE and Experimental.
The rockstar social club signup/login is problematic. In fullscreen mode the mouse pointer is not visible at all, so logging in and completing the captcha is impossible. If you set launch option "-windowed" you see the cursor until you click anything. Then you have to switch back and forth to desktop to see the cursor again. It's possible to get into the gameplay, but it's not easy as it used to be.
Game works perfectly except that intro video is skipped.
Completed playthrough of game including both endings
a graphical "light blob" glitch right at the beginning when starting the game
There is a tiny graphical glitch on a reflective surface on the ceiling right at the beginning of the game, it seems to only occur on AMD graphic cards.
Works without issues, tried both fullscreen and windowed mode, and switching between desktop and the game.
Game works fine, but has some graphics glitches if you enable SSR
When SSR (ScreenSpaceReflections) are enabled, there are glitches when indoors at some spots when using a flashlight. Disabling SSR in the options the game works fine.
Game works without issues
There are no longer graphical glitches with SSR enabled
Audio has static/distortions, fonts are rendered wrong with artifacts and the wrong spacing.
Playable out of the box, a couple of minor issues.
Fullscreen and Windowed Fullscreen mode behaves the same. Unable to normally alt-tab back to desktop. (I have not compared if this is how it behaves on Windows too).
When switching to desktop, even when using a different workspace for the game. The game still reacts to the mouse pointer.
Good performance with only minimal stutter when first time entering a new area. A developer logo splash screen video is skipped seamlessly, the actual game itself only contains cut-scenes that are real-time.
Works out of the box
A couple of scenes later in the game have slight performance issues
Game works fine but control with mouse is floaty and not precise. Tried to decrease speed and disabling mouse acceleration, but it made no difference.
Works the same as on Windows out of the box (the game has bugs not Proton related). The mouse jumping/floating issue has been fixed as of this version.
Game works, except fullscreen mode launches the game in a borderless window that is partially off-screen. Minimizing and then maximizing the game fixes the problem. With Proton launch option "PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%", the game launches properly into fullscreen but then performance is much worse.
Works out of the box, completed a full playthrough without any issues
Everything worked including the videos with default Proton. Performance is also good as expected for retro style graphics.
Works out of the box with default Proton
Note the game has a bug causing graphical glitches if you combine the "VHS" video mode with some of the CRT filters. This problem occurs on Windows too.
Works out of the box, completed a full playthrough
No issues, runs with good performance
Full playthrough of the game without any issues
Runs with good performance
Game works perfectly except that if a controller is connected game keeps pulling to the left. Disconnecting controller there is no problem. Performance was good and there is no longer a problem with the mouse floating.
OPENSSL_ia32cap=0x20000000 %command%
Game crashes on launch with recent Intel CPU's because of a OpenSSL related bug in Unreal Engine. The crash can be fixed with the launch option. This bug is not Proton/Linux specific, Windows gamers are affected too. See issue #5830 on the Proton github for more details.
Works perfectly out of the box with decent performance. Also now with Proton 4.2-3 the game exits properly. Have not tried Multiplayer but it does appear to connect to the servers at least. Performance is decent.
Game works but first time run is glitchy because of the Origin launcher
First time launch/Origin client install is problematic.
- Launching the game it wants to install the Origin client, select defaults
- Nothing happens so I just killed all Steam processes (maybe should have waited longer)
- Launching the game again on Steam, nothing happens for like 3-4 minutes and then an Origin Client login screen appears
- Trying to login though in the Origin client fails, I had to disable my VPN to be able to login
- After login the Origin window just went blank/white, nothing happens.
- Closing the Login window, the game and the Origin client launched
Getting the Origin launcher installed and working the first time was finicky.
Flawless out of the box and with good performance. Tested both Windowed and Fullscreen and also Nintendo Switch Pro controller worked.
Needs Proton launch option "PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%" to run. Game is playable but does not connect to online servers and has a memory leak.
Main menu runs at only around 10fps. But the rest of the game works fine with a decent frame-rate. Also tested with Nintendo Switch Pro controller.
Completed full playthrough of the game and extras without issues
In 16:10 aspect ratio some of the subtitles are slightly cut-off. Setting the game to any 16:9 solves that problem. This is not a Proton/Linux specific bug but an issue with the game, I played current version v1.1.0. I also completed "BOOTY CREEK CHEEK FREAK!" the bundled extra game without problems.
Works perfectly out of the box with okay performance. Note that the blinking mechanic can at first be mistaken for a graphical glitch.
Works out of the box, 100% completed game without issues
The maxed graphic setting "Epic" is more demanding than expected for the graphics fidely.
Played through the game including unlocking all achievements and endings
Runs perfectly, also tested switching between windowed/mimized/fullscreen mode.
Game crashes with latest Proton versions during gameplay when using the elevator in the office building to floor 2. With older Proton 7.0-6 the game does not have this issue.
Game is playable with older Proton version, but can't recommend because there are missing videos
Missing videos
Rerating this because it is not a good experience, there are videos in the game missing (you only hear the audio and see the subtitles). The videos are not working with Proton GE either. Game also crashes with latest Proton versions during gameplay when you reach floor 2. With older Proton 7.0-6 the game does not crash.
Completed full playthrough and all endings of the game without issues using Proton Experimental Bleeding Edge
Right now game only works properly with the current Bleeding Edge branch of Proton Experimental (8.0-50038-20230717), without any crashes and all in-game videos work.
To enable the bleeding edge branch of Proton experimental on Steam: Right click Proton Experimental in Steam Library > Click on Betas > Select "bleeding edge". This step will most likely not be needed in the near future.
RADV_DEBUG=llvm %command%
Flickering shadows
Relatively poor performance for the graphics quality
The launch option is only for fixing the shadow flickering with the current AMD GPU drivers. It reduces performance, do not use the launch option unless necessary (the issue may get fixed in future driver updates).
Game works but cut scene videos are skipped. Played 30 minutes without any issues. Nintendo Switch Pro controller also worked.
Works out of the box including cut scene videos
The game works now out of the box, graphics rendered correctly and cut-scene videos work (the converted videos are downloaded together with the shaders on Steam).
Game won't start, Steam client says the game is running but nothing happens. Different Proton launch options made no difference.
Game won't launch, nothing happens
Steam just says running, had to manually kill the process.
Works out of the box without any additional problems that don't exist on Windows. Also tested switching between desktop and game, and that also Nintendo Switch Pro controller works. The game only supports 4:3, except for cut-scenes that are widescreen. Mouse sensitivity is too high (but can be adjusted), mouse pointer is not hidden (workarounds exist) and video cut-scenes may have a scaling artifact depending on your monitors resolution. Rating platinum as the game works the same as on Windows, however the PC port to begin with is not flawless.
Played through whole game without issues, except for the alt+tab switching.
Can't alt-tab to desktop, fullscreen mode behaves like borderless. This might be the same as on Windows, but can't confirm.
Game launches with a black screen, there is audio but no video. Tried different Proton launch options.
Launching the game there a window with a black screen pops up for a second, then exits and nothing happens. Tried different launch options without success.
Game work out of the box now with standard Proton
Everything works now out of the box, including cut-scenes both with video/audio.
Launching the game music plays but there is no video. Tried also with Proton 3.7-8 but made no difference.
Did not notice audio being off-synch during cut-scenes. Stutter is pretty frequent visiting new areas for the first time, but after the shader cache has been built the game runs well.
Game crashes on launch with "UE4 Fatal Error" message. The different launch options and disabling overlays made no difference.
Could play the game without issue
Only tried the game in single player, so it is still possible multiplayer might be broken.
Game works perfectly except it always starts minimized, or with a window that is completely black. You have to click on the games icon in the taskbar to get the game to switch to fullscreen and get going.
Runs without any issues out of the box, tried both windowed and fullscreen. DLC was also detected.
Just a black screen, there is music but nothing happens. Game works fine if you install mfplat according to https://software.kaminata.net/linux-wine-games/planet-alpha-linux-dxvk-wine/
OPENSSL_ia32cap=0x20000000 %command%
The videos work now on out of the box, but the game crashes on Intel 10th gen+ CPU's unless you set the launch option. Note that the crashes with Intel CPU's is not a Linux specific issue..
OPENSSL_ia32cap=0x20000000 %command%
The game and videos work, but on Intel 10th+ Gen CPU's the launch option is needed or else the game will crash after a few minutes of gameplay.
Game is unplayable unless you install MS Media Foundation, then it works perfectly. Rating the game borked as installing Media Foundation I consider is beyond just a tweak.
There is a static/glitchy audio, and the controls using Nintendo Switch Pro Controller keep pulling right all the time.
Some audio crackling, can be minimized by setting a custom latency value, but not getting rid of the problem completely. Launch option "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command%" is a good starting point.
The game stutters significantly the first time playing a track without ACO. With ACO the performance is tolerable. The sound crackles during start of a race (can be reduced some by setting latency), but is okay during game.
The intro video and video billboards are not displayed, but this occurs in a mostly transparent manner (as billboards are just rendered with a static image). By installing manually media foundation, you can fix this.
In conclusion the game can be fixed to work pretty much flawlessly except for minor audio crackling. It's a close call if I would recommend this to a typical gamer. I'm giving it a thumbsdown, because I think mf-install and setting audio launch options is too much.
Fully working out of the box
Game works fully now including the videos even with regular Proton.
Game is playable but crashes.
Game crashes often if during a race quitting back to main menu.
Game often crashes when going back to main menu, or when exiting the game.
Needed to set Steam launch option "-onethread", otherwise game crashes with a "Fatal Error!" message on launch.
Game works out of the box
With maxed settings, performance is pretty poor in some scenes. Not sure how this compares with the game running on Windows.
Game now works on my setup without additional launch options (previously crashed without onethread). The startup developers logo videos are not played, but you are not missing out on anything (there are no videos in-game).
Playable with no issues out of the box
logo video is now displayed correctly, and performance appears to be better than before.
Neither the standard game that uses UE3 engine, or the remake using UE4 (currently at Alpha V007) will start. Tried with different Proton launch options, and it made no difference (not even with Use Wine D3d11option any of them run).
Works without problems out of the box, decent performance with Mesa+ACO drivers. Running at playable framerates of 30-60fps on maxed setting at 1600p resolution.
Perfectly playable out of the box
Alt-tab between fullscreen/desktop is a bit glitchy, when switching back to fullscreen you have to click on the taskbar icon to bring the game up again.
The game freezes for a few seconds on exit, but I believe that happened on windows too. Everything maxed at 1600p resolution, the performance is acceptable 30-60fps.
Game works except that startup logos and menu video does not play (it does not affect gameplay at all). The game renders text misaligned in 16:10 aspect ratio, have to change to 16:9 resolution. This is however likely a bug with the game and not Proton.
Using Proton GE game menu background video works, however the intro video still is missing.
Nothing happens when trying to launch the game, tried different Proton launch options and disabling overlays.
Game won't launch nothing happens, tried different Proton launch options without success.
Game works out of the box, tried Fullscreen/Windowed, Alt+Tab, Nintendo Switch Pro controller. Good performance.
Without problems out of the box. Text is rendered and both keyboard and controller (Nintendo Switch Pro) worked.
Game works out of the box with default Proton
No tweaks were necessary, worked out of the box with decent performance.
Games whole screen is not visible and has graphical glitches on the sides, switching back to desktop is not possible.
Runs out of the box. Perfect fullscreen, windowed stutters but that is likely a problem with the desktop environment.
Perfect out of the box. Tried both fullscreen and windowed mode, switching between Fullscreen and Windowed, minimizing and maximizing window, Nintendo Switch Pro Controller over bluetooth.
Playable with good performance out of the box
There is a 12 second startup logo video that is missing sound (the videos codec is vorbis)
Works perfectly out of the box and with good performance, tried both in windowed and fullscreen. Also Nintendo Switch Pro controller worked.
Launching the game there is an error message "Unsupported CPU detected. CPU needs to support SSE, SSE2 and SSE3" and then the game gets stuck on a black screen. Different Proton launch options made no difference.
Game worked perfectly out of the box, good performance overall but with some shader compilation stuttering.
Everything works out of the box. Tested also that Switch Pro controller support and switching between windowed/fullscreen works.
Won't start nothing happens, tried with different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays.
Everything worked out of the box with default Proton including options menu
Note that with current Proton Experimental the game does not launch.
The game has lots of glitches on windows, runs with the same problems out of the box.
Works out of the box, played through full game
Note that there is a couple of minor launch day quirks with the game that are probably not specific to Proton. At one scene there is a minor graphical glitch and lack of prompt what key to press to proceed with dialogue (you should press the E key)
Poor performance, around 30fps on graphic preset medium (1080p). Switching between Desktop and the game does not work properly. Mouse controls are not working properly, but playing with controller is no problem.
Runs out of the box but mouse control does not work properly. No problem controlling the game with a Nintendo Switch Pro controller. I did not spot any graphical issues (like with earlier Proton versions), however the performance is still very poor. The performance does not scale with settings, minimum settings at 720p has similar performance as maximum at 1600p. Game for now is practically unplayable because of poor performance on anything but possibly the very highest end GPU's/systems.
Performance is similar to Windows with this Proton version (using Mesa/ACO). Playable out of the box but only with a controller, mouse control is unplayable. Alt+Tab to desktop does not work (game traps the mouse pointer). Ending video allegedly does not work (but I can't verify that as I have not completed the game).
Works now out of the box, even including videos
There is still some stuttering when playing any level for the first time, but less than there used to be.
Everything works out of the box with okay performance
With my current Alder Lake setup and Proton version the performance is ok. There is some minor shader cache stuttering but it is barely noticeable compared to my older 1st gen Threadripper system.
32bit version is playable, but audio is clipping/distorted and there is an extreme amount of texture pop-in. 64bit version is graphically flawless, but does not have in-game audio.
Works out of the box, completed full playthrough
Game keeps switching from fullscreen to windowed everytime you launch it. So had to toggle this everytime in the games settings.
I did encounter a game breaking bug. Once I had to restart the game from the beginning because the final enemy encounter would not trigger.
Needs installing Media Foundation (cab version files)
Shadows are flickering and certain objects are glitching.
Fullscreen mode, behaves the same as WIndowed Fullscreen. Alt+Tab does not minimize the game.
The game consistently crashed with Kernel 5.4.0-050400rc5, updating to Kernel 5.4.0-050400rc6 fixed the crashes.
The graphical glitches do not occur on my setup with Proton 4.2-9
Game is perfectly playable with great performance. if you manually install MS Media Foundation files. Even with mfplat installed there is however still a minor issue, approx 1 of 10 times the game crashes during launch at the intro video. Why I'm rating this borked is because I consider installing the Media Foundation files more than just a tweak, also note downloading/distributing those files is legally questionable.
With Proton-5.6-GE-1 (https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases/tag/5.6-GE-1) the game works out of the box, no need for launch options or mf-install workaround.
Game works out of the box with good performance with everything maxed, including high res texture pack. Windowed mode/Fullscreen/Controller/Cut-scenes all worked. But rating silver was some minor audio stutter and the settings of the game aren't saved.
Works the same on Proton as on Windows
Game does not minimize on alt+tab, this is a problem on Windows too.
Note that there are some issues with the Windows version in the first place. Settings are not saved, unless you have saved progress once in-game. Windows users are also reporting framerate and audio stuttering. Difficult to tell with Proton if the occasional stutter was because of shader compilation, or if that is just how the game is.
Game won't start, tried different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays.
Perfect out of the box, Nintendo Switch Pro controller also tested and worked fine over Bluetooth.
Won't start, nothing happens. Tried different Proton launch options and disabling overlays.
Won't start, tried different Proton launch options, and disabling Steam overlays.
When launching the game Steam client says it is running, but nothing happens.
Game won't start, Steam says running but nothing happens.
Flickering videos
There are no videos during gameplay, so the videos flickering will not prevent you from enjoying the game. But it is not a good first impression seeing the glitchy flickering intro videos when launching the game.
Game works out of the box, completed a playthrough of the story mode
Some scenes in the game have a drop in performance
The performance is not consistent throughout the game, some areas have a noticeable drop in framerate. But other than that there are no issues and game works well.
Everything worked out of the box, including the cut-scene videos
Windows version works perfectly forced through Proton, tried both windowed and in fullscreen. Also switching between the game and the desktop works. (Native Linux version crashed the Cinnamon desktop)
Forcing use of Proton game works without issues, the native version crashes on my setup
On my setup the Linux native version crashes right at the main menu. Forcing the use of Proton I played a full playthrough of the game without any issues.
Works out of the box even in DX12 mode with decent performance
XeSS upscaling even at lowest settings tanks performance instead of increasing
I did not encounter any instability issues with the problematic "Origin Black Hole" tracks. So forcing DX11 mode with a launch option no longer seems to be necessary.
On my current setup with a modest RX 5700 GPU, for 90fps 1440p gameplay I maxed all the graphic settings, disabled vsync and set framerate cap to 90 fps.
Works perfectly out of the box, there is a lot of stuttering though during shader state caching when playing a track for the first time.
Game works perfectly out of the box, including Nintendo Swith Pro controller support and rumble feedback. Some shader compilation stutter playing track the first time, but is less noticeable than it used to be.
Works without problems out of the box, this game is one of the most noticeable when it comes to shader compilation stuttering. This used to be nearly unplayable every first playthrough on a track. With recent Mesa+ACO drivers the performance of the game is decent even the first time.
With Proton 4.11-2 game crashes during loading screen when trying to start a race. With previous Proton versions the game still works.
Nothing happens when trying to launch the game or the configuration tool, tried different Proton launch options without success.
When launching either the game or the configuration tool, steam client says game is running but nothing happens.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ddraw.dll=n,b" %command%
protontricks 281860 mfc42
The game does not work out of the box, you need to set the Steam launch option "
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ddraw.dll=n,b" %command%" and install mfc42 using protontricks.
Example on how to install mfc42 using flatpak protontricks:
flatpak install flathub com.github.Matoking.protontricks
flatpak override --user --filesystem=/mnt/MySSD/SteamLibrary com.github.Matoking.protontricks
flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks --no-bwrap 281860 -f -q mfc42
note: replace file system path with the path of your own steam library, you might not even need this step if using defaults.
Works out of the box, completed a full playthrough without any issues
Played through v2.0 of the game, did not encounter any issues or bugs.
The audio has distortions and volume levels are wrong. Game is playable with okay performance and some occasional stuttering the first walk through an area.
Out of the box the cut-scenes are skipped, but otherwise game is playable. Installing Media Foundation fixes the cut-scenes, though there is still some audio crackling. Launch option "PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%" fixed the audio. Rating this game only Silver though (even though it fixable to be perfect), because installing MF is beyond a simple tweak.
Proton-5.8-GE-1-MF (https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases/tag/5.8-GE-1-MF)
after a cut-scene video has played, you have to press a button to continue
With standard Proton the videos just skip, with Proton-GE everything appears to work. Only remaining issue is that you have to press a button after cut-scenes, or otherwise the game does not proceed. So it is not a completely seamless experience, but should not stop anyone who wants to play the game.
With Proton Experimental bleeding edge the game is working without issues now. The videos are also rendered properly with correct brightness/gamma/color. With standard Proton the game is also playable, but the videos are not rendered correctly and look washed out.
Works perfectly with launch option "PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%". Without the option there is no video only sound.
Flawless out of the box. No problems with crashes and game exited gracefully. Also Nintendo Switch Pro Controller worked.
Proton-6.9-GE-2
Game does not sometimes exit properly
Game is playable with regular Proton too, but then videos are skipped. Completed the whole game on Proton GE, had a couple of display driver crashes during this (but that I think is probably because I used unstable Mesa drivers)
Completed game without any issues
Everything worked out of the box with detault Proton including videos. Note that the bright flashes during the menu screen could be mistaken for a graphical glitch, but it appears to be intended effect (looks the same compared to windows).
With Proton 3.16-7 game won't start just a black screen, different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlay makes no difference. Forcing older Proton 3.7-8 the game launches and the main game is perfectly playable.
Game won't start just launches to a black screen, tried Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays.
Game won't start with Proton 4.2-1 just launches to a black screen. The game is playable (but only the classic mode works) on the same system with Proton 3.7-8
Game won't start with Proton 4.2-3 just launches to a Window with a black screen and a cursor. Tried different Proton launch options but made no difference.
Game launches to a black screen and nothing happens, game does partially work with older Proton 3.7-8
Just a black screen and nothing happens, the original mode works with Proton 3.7-8.
Game just launches to a black screen and then nothing happens.
With Proton 3.7-8 and launch option "PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%" the classic mode of the game is playable.
Game launches to a black screen, nothing happens
The classic Rez mode is still playable with Proton 3.7-8 if you set launch option "PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%"
Crashes after a few minutes without launch option "PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%". Playable with KB+M but with NSPro controller the controls are not working correctly. Performance is stuttery and audio has some crackling.
With current Proton/Experimental/GE versions, the boss introduction videos do not play correctly.
Game works out of the box without issues, completed a full playthrough
Performance was also pretty good. Steam Deck users be aware that the game has some small text, and it may be difficult to spot certain objects in the game.
Works out of the box without issues (full game early access)
Not seen any issues so far with the full game (early access). On my setup I'm getting a locked 60fps at 1440p with graphics maxed using Intel XeSS on Ultra Quality. Without any upscaling getting some dips to around 50fps. The performance is similar to the updated demo (that is no longer available), but curiously XeSS upscaling seems to perform better in the full game.
FSR 2.2 in the game gives a big performance boost, but even at the highest quality setting produces a noisier image compared to when using XeSS.
Works flawlessly out of the box, tried fullscreen, windowed and switching between desktop and game.
Plays like native including all the bugs/quirks, the mouse pointer is floaty unless you set it to minimum speed in the game. Also beware that clicking X quits the game (that is counter-intuitive, when reading a note instincts tell you to click X to close the note. But you have to actually wait for an in-game prompt to close the note). Also you can walk through walls at spots. However note that all these problems are present on windows too.
Works out of the box, but defaulted to lowest audio/volume settings on first launch.
On first launch the music/audio volume had defaulted to lowest, so I had to adjust the settings. Also the achievements appear to be currently broken (played the initial launch release version). But other than these game bugs, it works without issues on Proton.
Trying to launch the game it crashes with "XINGCode Init Fail [ZVWAVE_SysEnter]" error message.
With current default Proton the game freezes on a black screen at the very end of the game. But with Proton Experimental bleeding-edge branch I was able to complete the game without issues.
Works out of the box, not encoutered any issues and performance is okay with raytracing disabled.
The parking lot att the starting observation deck area, is a good place to fine tune your graphic settings. As the performance there is about as bad as it gets.
For 1440p targeting 60fps with RX 7900 GRE for best possible image quality I used:
- Render Quality Preset: Epic
- Frame Rate Cap: 60fps
- Dynamic resolution: 60fps
- Vsync: Disable
- Supersampling: TSR
- TSR Preset: Normal
- Raytracing: Off
Note the game has some slight traversal stutter at some spots that happen regardless of settings (this occurs on Windows too).
With raytracing enabled the performance significantly tanks, I was able to get a stable 30fps though using XeSS Ultra Performance. But it is not worth it because the difference with raytracing is barely noticeable.
OPENSSL_ia32cap=0x20000000 %command%
Game crashes on CPU's with SHA extensions (basically recent Intel CPU's), unless you use the launch option. This is because of a OpenSSL bug in the Unreal Engine (same crash would occur on Windows too).
Works out of the box without issues, completed full playthrough
Everything works and there were no issues with the videos.
Works out of the box, completed a full playthrough without any issues.
Performs well as expected for retro style graphics
Everything works fine including online play, some stutters though during gameplay.
Game works perfectly, but alt+tab between the game and desktop is glitchy (sometimes it does not work).
Game works out of the box, tested fullscreen and windowed. Also Nintendo Switch Pro controller worked. Good performance. Did not try multiplayer.
Works out of the box with good performance
Not seen any issues as far as I have played, everything seems be working including the videos, and with good performance.
Playable but there were some minor graphical glitches.
Some minor glitches with lights and object popping in
Game is still in early access, not sure if the graphical glitches were bugs in the game, gpu drivers or Proton.
Game launches up to the main menu, but when starting a game the screen goes black (but sound continues). Tried with different launch options, windowed/fullscreen and disabling Steam overlays.
Works out of the box since Proton 3.16.4, that update fixed the problem with fonts/text not being displayed.
Works out of the box with decent performance, text and menues are displayed properly. Tested also switching between desktop and the game.
Game won't start nothing happens, tried with different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays.
Works out of the box, completed a full playthrough without issues
Played using default Proton, no issues and with good performance considering the relatively detailed graphics.
Runs perfectly out of the box, with similar performance as on Windows.
Runs perfectly out of the box, except if a controller is detected the game keeps pulling to the left all the time. In this case it happened with a Nintendo Switch Pro controller available over bluetooth.
Everything works out of the box, windowed/fullscreen, alt+tab, and Nintendo Switch Pro controller without issues.
Works out of box, completed game including both endings without issues
Performance is relatively poor considering the graphics fideity of the game.
Works fine but the performance could be better. With RX 7900 GRE using the "Ultra" graphic settings at 1440p, the game drops below 60fps at times.
Proton-6.15-GE-1 needed to display splash screen (not necessary to play game though)
Some audio crackling that can be fixed by setting Steam Launch option "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=250 %command%"
Game crashes on launch
With default Proton there is just a black screen on launch and then the game crashes. With custom Proton GE intro splash screen logos are displayed and then the game crashes.
Launching the game, the screen goes black for a couple of seconds and then game exits back to desktop.
Game runs out of the box with graphical issues. With Proton launch option "PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%" it works perfectly. Windowed/Fullscreen works, controller support works.
Forced use of Proton compatibility tool
Game has a Linux native version that is currently incomplete that will be downloaded unless you force use of Proton. Force Proton so that Steam downloads/installs the Windows version of the full game. The Windows version of the game works without issues with Proton.
In the Steam Library > right click game and select properties > compatibility tab > tick the box that says "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool"
Won't start nothing happens, tried different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays.
Game works perfectly windowed out of the box with solid 60fps and no stuttering. But in fullscreen the game starts minimized, so you have to bring up the screen, and then it minimizes again several times during intro screens.
Game crashes when trying to start the game from the games launcher. Tried both in fullscreen and windowed mode, switching back to older Proton 3.16-9 the game launches.
Game works perfectly now with Steam launch option "PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%". Great performance , and no issues with the game being minimized in fullscreen mode.
Full playthrough of 10th Anniversary Update without issues
Played through all of the content in the 10th Anniversary update including hidden level without problems. The menu text is flickering, not sure if bug or design choise, but it occurs on Windows too so it is not Proton specific.
Works out of the box without any issues and relatively good performance
Everything works including videos. Good performance for a UE5 game, with a RX 7900 GRE got a solid 60fps graphics maxed at 1440p. Some minimal stutter early in the game that I assume was because of shader compilation.
Game is playable, but the menues are hard to navigate because mouse pointer is not visible
Mouse pointer is not visible
You can navigate the menu by feel, as most menu options are highlighted when the invisible mouse pointer hovers over an option. Once you get into gameplay the game itself works fine. Because of this I can't currently recommend the game, if the game would have had menu navigation using keyboard this would have been a minor issue.
Game launches to a black screen, tried editing config file. Set proper resolution and tried switching to windowed mode, but problem persisted.
Worked out of the box without issues, good performance and also Nintendo Switch Pro controller worked.
Runs without any issues out of the box, also worked fine with a Switch Pro Controller.
There is audio but no video, just a black screen. Tried different launch options and disabling Steam overlays.
Just a black screen nothing happens. Only the configuration tool launches/works.
The game works out of the box, including the videos
The game defaulted to Japanese audio, not sure if that is intentional, but it could be changed in the configuration launcher either way.
Everything works, tried both game modes, fullscreen and windowed. Switching between desktop and the game. Nintendo Switch Pro controller over bluetooth was also tested.
Flawless out of the box, and with performance similar to native Wndows.
Everything works out of the box, NS Pro Controller, online leaderboards, alt+tab between desktop and fullscreen, windowed mode/fullscreen mode. And performance on par with Windows.
Works without problems, tried both windowed and fullscreen. Also switching between desktop and the game.
Playable but with shadows having graphical glitches. Launch option "PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 %command%" fixes graphics, but then you get very poor performance instead.
Works out of the box without any issues and at a decent frame-rate, some occasional stuttering during shader compilation, but that is to be expected.
Works perfectly, tried both in windowed and fullscreen mode, and switching between desktop and the game.
Worked perfectly out of the box, both in windowed and fullscreen mode.
Played through the whole game
Game does not minimize on Alt+Tab
Hitting escape to get to the options menu, mouse pointer becomes visible. Until you click a mouse button. Not sure if this also happens on Windows.
Works out of the box, completed a full playthrough without issues
Performance is also relatively good for a Unreal Engine 5 game. On my setup with RX 7900 GRE, graphics maxed at 1440p, game has dips to around 50fps. But with FSR3 enabled on highest quality there were no problems keeping a locked 60fps.
Game is playable but if you switch to fullscreen, you can't go back to windowed mode (you get no video, just a black screen). Different launch options and disabling overlays made no difference.
The OpenGL version works perfectly out of the box, tried also with Nintendo Switch Pro controller. DirectX version crashes on launch, therefore putting a Gold rating. But practically the game is Platinum with the default OpenGL version.
Works perfectly out of the box and with good performance. Tried both windowed/fullscreen and also with a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
Proton-6.20-GE-1
Proton GE is needed for the videos to play
Won't start, nothing happens. Tried different Proton launch options, and disabling Steam overlays.
Game works out of the box with like native performance. Note that it has the same issues as on Windows with controller detection and wrong screen prompts for button presses.
Works perfectly out of the box, but experienced some rare audio crackling. A solution for that is either to set launch option "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command%", or change PulseAudio settings to default sample rate 48000.
Game works out of the box perfectly. No sound issues and the unity mouse floating/jumping problem has been fixed.
Works out box, completed a full playthrough, there were some bugs
Note that the current launch day version v1.0.32 has some bugs that can be game breaking. It happens on Windows too so not a Proton specific issue. I got stuck once and had to start over the game from the beginning.
Won't start nothing happens, different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays made no difference.
Game launches, plays logo videos, and gets up to the main Tekken 7 splash screen that says "press any button". pressing any key/button the game loads for a while and then crashes.
Game works perfectly out of the box with 32GB(4x8GB) RAM. With 16GB(2x8GB) the game crashes when trying to enter the main menu. I suspect the problem has something to do with running dual-channel memory on Threadripper, as with quad-channel the game works fine. 16GB should have been more than enough to launch the game. But I'm playing it safe and rating this silver for now, it is possible that this is not a Proton issue but rather something else like Kernel/Linux/CPU/Motherboard/BIOS etc..
Works perfectly out of the box, with Mesa ACO driver there is significantly less stuttering. Nintendo Switch Pro controller also worked. I rated platinum, but be aware that there may be an issue with running the game on Threadripper in dual-channel mode. I only tested with quad-channel this time.
Works without any issues out of the box
Completed full game and unlocked all videos without issues.
Game works well except for some performance issues
When entering name on the high score board after finishing the game, pressing "enter" on the keyboard to confirm the name did work, had to confirm with a controller. I think this is probably a bug with the game and not Proton.
Some parts of the game have performance issues
Performance is all over the place with this game. With maxed settings most of the game runs at solid 60fps at 1440p on my system. But then there are some segments where the framerate drops to around 20fps. Had to set lower resolution to 1080p and and set shadows to low and disable ambient occlusion to maintain over 30fps.
Game starts always minimized so you have to bring up the screen. Some audio distortion and certain characters graphics are glitchy. Tried different Proton launch options and disabling overlays.
Graphical glitches with certain stages and some characters, otherwise works ok with both KBM and Switch Pro controller.
Without the launch option "PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%" the game starts minimized and has to be brought up. Regardless of launch options used there are graphical glitches with certain characters and stages.
Playable, but there is graphic corruption and game always starts minimized.
Game works perfectly except that the games screen gets stuck if switching between Fullscreen to Windowed and then back to Fullscreen again.
Game works perfectly except switching back and forth between fullscreen and windowed, the games screen/window gets stuck.
Switching between fullscreen and windowed mode does not work correctly. See Github issue #2667. Other than that the game works perfectly.
Everything worked out of the box
The previously mentioned problem of game launching minimized appears to be fixed, or it was a Cinnamon desktop specific issue.
Works out of the box without any issues
Game lacks any graphic options, it seems to default to the highest 16:9 aspect ratio resolution your monitor supports.
With Proton 4.2-3 there is no video unless you use launch option "PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%". But then the game has much worse performance. Forcing older Proton 3.16-9 the game is flawless out of the box and works without any launch options (it does not even have the music stops playing after resume problem as mentioned previously).
Game works perfectly with "PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%". Without D9VK the re is no video, just a black screen.
Error message on launch and then nothing happens. With D9VK there is no error message, but nothing happens.
Game crashes on launch with "Assertion Failed" error message.
protontricks 366280 d3dcompiler_46
Out of the box there is no video (just a black screen). One has to install d3dcompiler_46 using Protontricks to fix the video.
Example on how to using terminal install flatpak protonticks and d3dcompiler_46:
flatpak install flathub com.github.Matoking.protontricks
flatpak override --user --filesystem=/mnt/Games/SteamLibrary/ com.github.Matoking.protontricks
flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks 366280 d3dcompiler_46
Replace the filesystem path with the path to your own steamlibrary
All the previous workarounds are no longer needed, the game works without issues using Proton Experimental now.
Works perfectly, tried fullscreen and windowed, and also switching between desktop/game.
Game works perfectly like on native windows, including fullscreen and windowed mode. The key mappings were different to what the store page stated: F10 changes volume, F11 changes screen modes (not sure if it is because of Proton, different keyboard layouts or if the information on the store page was not correct).
Completed a full playthough of the game without any issues
Game does not have any settings for vsync or framerate cap. One can set launch option "DXVK_FRAME_RATE=60 %command%" to cap the framerate.
Latest version v1.1.1 of the game still works out of the box
This update also adds vsync settings to the game, so previous workarounds to limit fps are no longer needed.
Works perfectly with decent performance in windowed and borderless fullscreen. Rating silver because true fullscreen mode results in a black screen
Game works fine except for poor performance
Around 30fps at 1440x900 resolution with RX5700 GPU
Just barely playable had to drop resolution to 1440x900 to be able to maintain 30fps. The performance is really bad on Windows too reportedly. Graphics quality settings don't appear to make any real difference on performance, only lowering the resolution. The game has a VHS aesthetic so playing in low resolution is tolerable and not too distracting. Can't recommend this on any weaker GPU's.
I did experience two random crashes playing with default Proton. Maybe just a coincidence, but after switching to experimental did not experience any issues.
Vsync option in the game does not work, you can use launch option "DXVK_FRAME_RATE=60 %command%" to limit framerate.
Some scenes of the game can be demanding, so people playing on Steam Deck may need to turn down graphic settings. As with most Chillas Arts games, to access the graphic settings you have to start the game and then hit enter.
Works out of the box and with good performance
Tested version 1.6.3 of the game.
Note! During loading of the game it pauses at the Unreal Engine splash screen, to proceed press A on controller or Enter on keyboard. There is no prompt to do that, so one could mistakenly think that the game crashed.
Make sure you are using the latest Proton 9 or Experimental, game does not work on older versions.
Works out of the box with great performance
I tested only the DX12 mode. Great performance in 1440p resolution with all settings maxed, not seen it drop below 70fps. Game does support FSR2, and with that enabled on higest quality could get 120fps. Be aware though that there is no built-in frame limiter in the game, only a vsync toggle and if you enable that the input lag is very noticeable.
Just a black screen and nothing happens, likely because the game uses quartz for videos.
Works out of the box with default Proton
Game works now including the videos using default Proton
Worked out of the box in DX11 and DX12 mode without raytracing
High shadow quality causes about 20% performance hit, I suggest set to medium or low
Enabling raytracing crashes the game
On my setup achieved the most stable performance in DX12 mode. With everything maxed except the shadows set to medium, got a locked 60fps at 1440p native resolution. Enabling raytracing the game crashes.
Game works similar as on Windows
Performance is worse than expected for the graphical fidelity. Maxed quality settings at 1600p, the performance is around 40fps.
Note however that the game is not well optimized in the first place and there are a few bugs not related to Proton.
Game does not work with the current default Proton. But it is playable with Proton Experimental Bleeding Edge or GE Proton 9-13.
To use Bleeding Edge of Proton Experimental, search for "proton experimental" in your Steam Library > Right Click and select Properties > Beta Tab > Select "Bleeding Edge - Latest and untested".
Note I used an older Linux Kernel because I experience some random crashes with the 6.10.x kernels. Also I used Mesa git because there is a couple of minor graphical glitches with the current stable. It is most noticeable on Chris alternative outfit once you unlocked it.
Game works the same as on windows with similar performance and the same bugs. The game is running on the glitchy AGS engine. Steam overlay only works in OpenGL or DX9 mode, game might crash if you don't increase the "sprite cache" in games setup. Sometimes the game hangs during launch, so you have to kill the process and start it again. Rating platinum because those are bugs with the game/engine it is running on, the experience is the same as on Windows.
Game is practically unplayable because of broken videos
Game can be launched and played, but videos essential to the game are not working. Tried also with GE and Experimental and it made no difference.
Using Proton Experimental the videos are now working (both in-game and the menu screen). Also the performance is much better now too than it was with older Proton versions.
Works out of the box without issues
I did not experience any performance problems or missing audio issues.
The game involves watching videos tapes at one point. With current Proton, Experimental and GE versions the videos are broken. With older GE-Proton7-5 version everything works fine.
Game works now including the job training video sequences
Note that the performance overall of the game is poor if you play this in higher resolutions, but that is not a Proton/Linux unique issue but also true on Windows.
Proton GE 5.9-GE-7-ST
Loud buzz/glitch
The audio glitch is loud/annoying enough (occurs when using dialogue choices during game) that I would not recommend the game even with Proton GE. With standard Proton the game just gets stuck on a black screen.
Proton-6.8-GE-1
The game is now working flawlessly using Proton-GE. There is no longer any audio glitches.
Videos in the game are broken on recent versions of Proton, Experimental and GE. Needed older GE-Proton7-5 version for the game to work properly.
Game including the videos works out of the box
Game used to require Proton GE or mfplat for videos, but it works now on Steam out of the box with default Proton.
Works out of the box (with a possible minor difference)
As a previous report mentioned, when hitting escape to get the pause menu. The mouse cursor becomes visible until you press a mouse button, this is probably same behaviour as on Windows but I can't confirm that.
Game works but has gfx glitches when SSR is enabled
If you have SSR enabled, at some spots in the game there will be graphics artifacts when using the flashlight. Disabling SSR the game works fine.
Playable but not enjoyable because having to force quit and restart game when dying
Game performs worse than you would expect for the graphics, drops below 60fps at times at 1440p resolution on a 7900 GRE. The game is lacking in resolution and quality settings. So for better performance you can force a lower resolution by using a launch option like "-screen-width 1920 -screen-height 1080"
Game gets stuck on the gameover cutscene screen
Can not recommend because it hangs on the gameover cutscene/screen. There is a lot of jank in the game, so not sure if this is a Proton issue or a bug with the game.
Proton GE 6.19-GE-2
Game runs on standard Proton as well, but is unplayable using keyboard and mouse because it keeps asking to reconnect a controller (even if you don't even have one).
Game works properly, except some minor graphical glitches later in the game.
There is some scenes with shadow/texture flickering later in the game.
I'm no longer seeing the controller disconnected issues. There is some minor graphical glitches later in the game, but only in a couple of segments so nothing gamebreaking or too distracting.
Played through whole game without issues
Played through entire game with default Proton. All cut scenes, premonitions and bonus videos worked. The only thing that did not work was a short trailer video (displayed just a black screen, it is the same Bink2 codec as all the other videos, so maybe broken on Windows too).
protontricks 1194630 vcrun2019
The game fails to launch unless you install MS C++ Runtime (vcrun2019)
Example on how to do this using flatpak:
flatpak install flathub com.github.Matoking.protontricks
flatpak override --user --filesystem=/mnt/MySSD/SteamLibrary com.github.Matoking.protontricks
flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks --no-bwrap 1194630 -f -q vcrun2019
note: Replace the filesystem path with the path to your steamlibrary. The vcrun install step sometimes fails for unknown reasons, adding those extra options made the install more reliable.
Works out of the box again with current version of the game and Proton
v1.10 of the game works on current Proton now out of the box on a fresh install. Manually installing Microsoft Virtual C++ Runtime is no longer needed.
Videos are skipped unless you install Media Foundation (mf-install) files: colorcnv.dll mf.dll mferror.dll mfplat.dll mfplay.dll mfreadwrite.dll msmpeg2adec.dll msmpeg2vdec.dll sqmapi.dll
Even after doing this some videos in the game will not work, because they are corrupt (have broken headers). The developer/publisher currently has not fixed it (this causes problems on Windows too).
I have uploaded a script that fixes the broken videos, available at: https://gist.github.com/AwesamLinux/c6ed174ee91415d3983cb91fabd27b35
See the comments on that page for instructions.
Minor crackling in videos, can be fixed with "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command%"
The game has a random but very rare hang when launching the game, just before reaching the main menu.
The non-working videos are in no way significant/helpful/necessary to the gameplay, all actual cut-scenes are real-time. So in that respect the experience is pretty good for everyone, therefore giving my thumbs up. But if you want to get all the videos working, then that takes more effort than typical gamers would like.
The game is fixable to be near perfect and with good performance. But requires more work than it should.
Launch option "PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%" seems to eliminate stuttering playing the longer extras videos.
Install Media Foundation (mf-install) for all cut-scenes to work.
Some of the videos shipped with the game are broken (on Windows too), you can fix them with this script (see the comments for instructions): https://gist.github.com/AwesamLinux/c6ed174ee91415d3983cb91fabd27b35
Some crackling during videos, to fix that use launch option "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command%"
When you switch back to the desktop, mouse movement/clicks are still registered in the game (main reason thumbing this down).
Completed a full play-through, this is a hard call between thumbs up or down.
I decided to give this a thumbs down this time because of all fixes needed to make everything work correctly. Requiring setting Pulse Audio Latency, Esync, installing media foundation and running a script to fix the broken video headers is just too much.
Some of these problems, like the broken videos do exist on Windows too. However there is one remaining minor issue I did not notice before and could not fix on Linux, and that is when Alt+tab switching to desktop the game still reacts to all mouse input.
The actual performance of the game after all these fixes is great on Proton, if you want to play the game on Linux need to avoid it, but be prepared to do all these fixes. Note that the game does not work out of the box on Windows either. (Namco sent a reply to me that they are looking into the video issues)
TLDR; With the current state of the game, set steam launch option "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1%command%"
install Media Foundation (mf-install) and fix the broken videos headers manually or with the script.
Game as of v1.19 update no longer needs the video and audio fixes, but instead only needs a MS C++ Runtime install workaround
protontricks 939850 vcrun2019
All of the old issues have been fixed with the new game update. However now you need to install "MS Visual C++ Runtime" for the game to launch.
Example on how to do this using flatpak:
flatpak install flathub com.github.Matoking.protontricks
flatpak override --user --filesystem=/mnt/MySSD/SteamLibrary com.github.Matoking.protontricks
flatpak run com.github.Matoking.protontricks --no-bwrap 939850 -f -q vcrun2019
note: replace filesystem path with the path of your own steamlibrary, you may not need this step if using defaults. The vcrun install step sometimes fails for unknown reasons, adding those extra options made the install more reliable.
Works out of the box now without any workarounds needed.
With current Proton and v1.19 of the game, everything works without any workarounds needed. All of the older fixes for Visual C++ Runtime, Audio, Videos and Intel CPU's are no longer relevant.
Shadows set to "ultra" causes significant drop in framerate in certain scenes, had to set them to "normal" to get consistent framerate.
Works out of the box including videos with default Proton. For better performance I used latest Proton Experimental bleeding edge and played the game in DX11 mode, and framecapped to 40fps using "DXVK_FRAME_RATE=40 %command%" for consistency.
Note that the game in current state has many bugs that are not Proton specific. For example fell through the map at one spot, item hud and button prompts stopped suddenly working (can be fixed by exit to main menu/reloading the game). Also the game performed worse overall compared to the previous ones.
Game works fine, but mouse pointer is invisible on the options selection window, however it can be navigated with a keyboard.
Works OOTB with good performance
Works without issues, including switching between desktop/fullscreen, Nintendo Switch Pro controller and videos.
Bethesda logo video plays really slow, you can skip it using instructions found here: https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/The_Evil_Within_2. Game itself works fine and have not experienced crashes like some have reported. Possible issue with audio/video going slightly off-sync in cut-scenes without vsync enabled. I believe this happens on windows too, but I'm rating this game silver as I can't confirm it right now (that is the only reason I'm rating Silver, otherwise it would have been gold)
Intro video plays back at 1fps, but can be skipped using method described here https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/The_Evil_Within_2. Other than that the game is playable, I have not been able to replicate problem with game crashing in bushes.(maybe Nvidia specific problem?)
Skipped intro using method described here https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/The_Evil_Within_2
Intro splash screen video plays back at 1fps so it must be skipped, but the actual game works fine past that.
Worked without issues out of the box
Runs without issues with good performance, the videos are now working too.
Works out of the box
Everything worked out of the box including videos and switching between game and desktop.
Game works, but it is finicky with screen resolutions other than 1080p. When the game launches with not the whole screen visible hit Alt+Enter, change the resolution settings within the game. Alternatively manually edit resolution in the games config file. Mouse pointer glitches out if you try to switch between desktop/game. I believe the guys that submitted previous compatibility reports of this game did not have Vulkan properly installed (based on the error message they got)
Works perfectly out of the box, no issues. Also tried switching between desktop and game.
Game works without any issues out of the box with decent performance (some occasional shader compilation stutter). Played through the whole game.
Game works but has graphic errors unless you disable SSR
Disabling SSR the game works fine, otherwise there are graphic artifacts and textures disappearing/flickering.
Works out of the box, completed a full playthrough without any problems
Note that I did not experience any stability issues playing with maxed graphic settings on my setup. Reportedly on Steam Deck you have to play with medium or lower quality, or you get crashes after a while of gameplay (presumably it runs out of VRAM)
Works without issues out of the box, completed a full playthrough
Performance is also okay, there was a few slightly more demanding scenes late in the game.
Completed a full playthrough without any issues, works out of the box
I played current update 1.5. The performance was good through the entire game, I did notice some minimal traversal stutter in the later half of the game.
Game is playable but with extreme stuttering first time looking around in an area (presumably during shader state caching). Game gets occasionally stuck on frozen/blank screen between scene transitions, to make it progress hit alt+enter twice.
Game works out of the box
The game defaulted to Korean language, not sure if that is an issue with Proton. To change to English, select the third option at the title screen, then pick language.
Game is playable but explosions leave a black/dark area on the screen, making it impossible to see the enemy. Different Proton launch options made no difference.
Completed a playthrough with good performance, only a slight bug with controls and video.
If you adjust system volume with the keyboard, mouse click input stops responding. And you have to alt+tab in and out of the game to get all input working again. I think this is because on KDE the on-screen volume slider pop-up maybe steals the focus. However I have never had this problem with any other game. So not sure if this is KDE, Proton or pehaps even a game specific bug.
This game performs extremely well compared to the developers previous game, on my setup around 140fps maxed settings at 1440p resolution. The karaoke videos played without issues too, except for a minor glitch where there is supposed to be looping video static (but it doesn't loop just plays once).
Runs out of the box but with poor performance 35ish FPS at 1080p, with vsync disabled and frameskip 0 it is boarderline tolerable. Controller input is broken, usually stuck in a direction and sometimes does not respond at all except in menues (people have reported similar issues on windows too though).
Game runs but with poor performance, around 45fps at 2560x1600 resolution with Proton 4.11-1. Performance does not appear to scale with resolutions. Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is not detected.
With Mesa ACO drivers and with launch option "PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%", the performance is still bad (considering the low requirements of the game). Not much difference with any game settings or resolutions, framerate is at best around 50fps.
Played through the whole game without issues
Game has low requirements and lacks vsync/framerate options, therefore I recommend limiting the framerate to 60fps with Steam Launch option "DXVK_FRAME_RATE=60 %command%"
Works out of the box without problems, completed a full playthrough
Game might run at a higher framerate than you want because it does not have any vsync or framerate settings. If you want to limit framerate to for example 60fps you can set Steam launch option "DXVK_FRAME_RATE=60 %command%"
Played through the game without any problems
Worked out of the box with good performance, no tweaks were necessary.
Game launches with a black screen, no audio or video. Tried different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays, and also forcing fullscreen.
Game is unplayable past the main menu, screen goes blank/green
No difference with Proton GE or Experimental.
Completed game on Proton with DX11, some minor issues
Game was fully playable including videos out of the box. However In the later half of the game experienced some GPU driver crashes. Perhaps running out of VRAM or something, dropping resolution or enabling FSR on lower setting seemed to solve/improve stability. Game is generally very demanding during the "split screen" sections, and especially in some of the scenes later in the game.
Won't start, nothing happens. Tried different launch options and disabling Steam overlays.
Won't start, tried different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays made no difference.
Game won't start, nothing happens, the Proton log file created is also empty giving no clue what went wrong.
Correction to my previous "platinum" report, I picked the wrong rating. This is obviously borked as it won't start.
After the splash screen nothing happens, game won't start, tried different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays
Game won't start, splash screen window displays briefly, and then nothing more happens.
Game won't start, splash screen window displays for a few seconds, then nothing happens.
Works out of the box except controls, some occasional shader-compilation stutter but that is to be expected. Controls work if you just press escape and then resume the game.
Works perfectly played through the full game without problems, did not experience any issues with controls like in previous Proton versions.
Playable out of the box but has issues with graphics (wrong color terrain lightning/flickering).
Playable but has graphical issues, also tried with D9VK and the game did not look right with that either (though different graphical glitches).
Playable but with distracting graphical glitches
Wrong colors and texture flickering
Game is playable but with noticeable graphical glitches
The graphical glitches are still present, background shading/colours flicker.
Some minor audio distortion, options menu can't be entered, loading/saving does not work.
bash -c 'exec "${@/2KLauncher\/LauncherPatcher.exe/TheQuarry.exe}"' -- %command%
Played in the default DX12 mode, and did not spot graphical glitches that some previous reports mentioned. The launch option is for skipping the 2K launcher.
On my setup locked the framerate to 30fps for 1440p resolution. Ultra shadow quality completely tanks performance in some parts of the game, so might want to set it to high.
Game launches without any proton launch options, but you can't get past the initial setting screen. Because when clicking "apply" nothing happens. Tried windowed and fullscreen, and with different Proton options. Also tried with KB+M and a xbone controller.
Game gets stuck on the initial language/brightness configuration screen, game is supposed to start when you apply the setting but nothing happens
Game works out of the box without any problems. As of this Proton version you get past the initial launch configuration screen as it responds to mouse input.
Works without problems
Did not see any issues playing this with recent Proton versions
Proton-7.0rc6-GE-1
With current Proton Experimental the game does not launch (displays a DX11 error message). With regular Proton menu video is missing. The game does not adapt to 16:10 aspect ratio (some text gets misaligned), but that is likely an issue with the game itself.
Poor performance out of the box, limiting CPU cores and enabling gamemode increased performance to acceptable levels.
gamemoderun WINE_CPU_TOPOLOGY=3:0,1,2 %command%
Performance does not scale with resolution or graphic settings, also game performs worse with more CPU cores.
Game seems to crash sometimes during launch with more than 4 CPU cores enabled.
Out of the box I get around 15fps on my setup with all settings maxed at 1440p. Lowering resolution or graphic settings did nothing to improve the performance. Instead I had to restrict CPU core usage, sweet spot was 3 cores. That improved the performance to between 30-60fps. Enabling more or less CPU cores than that the performance just gets worse (I did pay attention to not using ecores)
The launch option is for limiting CPU cores and enabling gamemode. For gamemode to work you need to have it installed on your Linux distro. On Fedora it can can be installed using the command "sudo dnf install gamemode".
As of game update on Steam released Tue, January 16 2024 (Frogwares version). The game is stable and performance is now much better out of the box without workarounds. But with default Proton cut-scene videos were missing, with Proton experimental the videos work.
Current version of the game (v1.02) works without issues
Game did have some bugs before with resolution and fps settings, that seemingly have been fixed with a game update.
Game is buggy but works out of the box, completed a full playthrough
Played the launch day version, the game has some jank and bugs. On my first attempt broke sequence and had to restart the game. There are no Proton/Linux specific issues though.
Proton-5.5-GE-1 (https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases)
Game is perfectly playable out of the box but is missing the visuals on a video sequence. With latest Proton GE the video works too.
Game works fine other than the mouse drifts down with button presses. Many Unity games have the problem see issue #1418 on github.
Game works perfectly out of the box (the issue with floating/jumping mouse pointer was fixed in this Proton version)
Game works fine except that it has the Unity mouse jumping/floating downwards when pressing keys issue, as described on Github #1418. Framerate is also about 40% worse than on Windows.
Game works perfectly now except performance is 20-35fps (the mouse jumping/floating issue was fixed in this Proton version). The strange thing is that changing quality settings and resolution barely make any difference to the performance.
Game works perfectly except performance is slightly worse than expected. However before the game was practically unplayable on Proton with fps dropping frequently below 30fps. Now the game is running at acceptable 30-45fps with maxed settings @1600p. Not sure if this is only because of improved Proton performance, or also because I upgraded from 2600Mhz to 3200Mhz RAM.
Game is running perfectly now with performance at around 50fps with Ultra settings at 2560x1600 resolution (this with ACO experimental drivers).Turning down AA from SMAA to FXAA bumps up the fps another 5fps.
OPENSSL_ia32cap=0x20000000 %command%
Game crashes on launch on systems with recent Intel CPU's because of a OpenSSL related bug in the game. The crashes can be fixed with launch option "OPENSSL_ia32cap=0x20000000 %command%". This bug is not Proton/Linux specific, Windows is affected too. See issue #5830 on the Proton github for more details.
Runs perfectly out of the box, with good performance and minimal stuttering.
The mouse sensitivity is too high, but that it is also a problem with the game on native windows.
Full playthrough of the whole game from episodes 1-4 without any problems. There is some occasional stutter when shaders compile but that is to be expected. As some previous reports pointed out the mouse cursor has poor latency, and sometimes you can see shadows flicker in the distance. But these are both issues that I have seen on windows too, so rating this Platinum.
Everything works except commentary videos
Developer commentary videos do not work
Game works out of the box with good performance. The commentary extras videos do not work (not with Proton-GE either). The reason appears to be that the videos are streamed from the internet.
Works out of the box, completed full game without any issues
Game performs as expected for the relatively good graphics. If your system struggles with the performance, I recommend disabling Lumen in the games graphical settings or adjusting resolution scaling.
Works fine out of the box, also tried both windowed and fullscreen.
There are graphics artifacts if reflections are enabled. Disabling the reflections game works without issues.
Game works fine if you disable reflections. With reflections there is graphic corruption (black boxes/flickering).
Game works except that with reflections enabled there is graphical corruption/artifacts. This also occurs with D9VK.
Problem remains that with reflections enabled there is graphical corruption. But other than that the game works.
With reflections enabled there is still graphical corruption. Disabling reflections the game works perfectly. Also tested with D9VK and it made no difference.
Game does not launch with this Proton version, nothing happens. WIth older Proton the game works but with graphical issues.
Works perfectly with reflections disabled
If reflections are enabled there is still graphical corruption. With reflections disabled game works fine.
Changing the games graphical settings makes the game perfectly playable. But anyone not aware that reflections have to currently be disabled are going to have a bad time.
Fully functional with launch option, but performance is poor
Artifacts with reflections enabled
Poor performance for the graphical fidelity of the game
Graphical glitches unless you disable reflections or set "d3d11.enableRtOutputNanFixup = True" in dxvk.conf, fully playable but performance is poor.
disable reflections
bad performance for the graphical quality
The performance is not good considering the quality of the graphics. The game is playable but has some graphical glitches with reflections enabled. You can enable reflections if you make a dxvk.conf file with the line "d3d11.enableRtOutputNanFixup = True" in the games installation directory.
Game works out of the box, including the Japanese text/characters in the launcher/config tool
Note this game does not have full English support, it has just the bare minimum of menu options translated. The games launcher/configuration tool does display Japanese text/characters correctly now.
It used to be a problem before that Japanese characters/text would be completely missing in the config tools (this occured when using English locale Windows too). Japanese text/characters are correctly displayed on Proton now, without having to force locale.
Works out of the box without issues
Also I did not hear any audio glitches that an older report mentioned
Worked out of the box without problems
Did not try multiplayer as all servers were full. But at least the game did see the servers.
Proton-5.5-GE-1
With custom proton version Proton-5.5-GE-1 (https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom) videos work.
Game is playable, but cutscene videos do not play leaving out too much context, the game also crashes on exit.
Game works but scenes are being skipped, missing out on too much context to be really playable.
Game Won't start, UE4 "Fatal Error!" message on start. Different proton launch options made no difference.
Game launches to an all white screen then crashes to deskop. Different proton options or disabling overlays made no difference.
Game runs perfectly out of the box both windowed and in fullscreen with everything maxed 60fps+ at 1440p. But there is a stutter here and there, during what I presume is shader compilation (the game does appear to have a lot of shaders, the cache built up to ~10MB in just a few plays). The stutters occured less frequently with every play.
Works but with poor performance as of recent Game update 1.12
Before I got a solid 60fps+ in this game, but with update 1.12, the performance went to 20-30fps with same settings.
Works with great performance out of the box
I previously reported poor performance, that appears to have been a driver regression. Works fine once I updated drivers.
Game works fine, but has minor graphical artifacts on the 2D graphics. I suspect that these are caused by the game not scaling properly to some resolutions/aspect ratios. Most likely same problem on windows, but can't verify that so rating it silver.
Works out of the box without issues, completed a full playthrough
Everything works including the videos. The plot/dialogue was difficult to understand at times because the English translation is rough.
Practically unplayable, game gets stuck during dialogue choices
Game gets stuck
Game gets stuck during dialogue choices if not selecting an option fast enough. Also during exploration, the screen can go black/video is missing in certain parts. I have tried GE and Experimental too and it made no difference.
Practically unplayable because of missing background graphics/video
Idle video animations missing
Game works slightly better now, dialogue options no longer makes the game break. But idle background graphics/video is still missing, making the game not enjoyable/difficult to play.
Flawless out of the box with good performance. Tried windowed and fullscreen, and also tested that the game works with a Nintendo Switch Pro controller.
Works out of the box, completed game including both endings
Played v1.02 of the game without issues.
Works without any issues with the current game build
The game is still in early access, but I have not spotted any issues so far. Performance is also pretty good, to achieve stable 60fps 1440p with maxed on my hardware just had to lower the resolution scaling to around 75%.
Works out of the box, completed game including all endings
Game was buggy at launch, but it has been patched and current version works without any major issues.
Game crashes on loading screen, tried different Proton launch options.
PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
Only the public-beta branch of the game works with the above Proton tinkering options. However you don't actually need to use Proton at all, because there is a Linux native version in the public-beta branch that works without any tinkering. So simply select the public-beta and disable Proton
RADV_DEBUG=llvm %command%
Flickering shadows unless you use the launch option. This is probably an issue with the GPU driver, do not use the launch option unless you see the same issue. It also only applies to AMD GPU's.
Some chapters in the game crash if you pause and enter the options
Current release day version of the game has many minor bugs and issues that I believe are not Proton specific:
- Mouse/controller settings do not apply during gameplay, have to exit to main menu.
- The sensitivity settings sometimes resets during gameplay.
- Some chapters of the game crash if pausing the game.
- A couple of common resolutions like 2560x1440 are missing in the options.
Out of the box the game also had flickering shadows on my system, that coluld be fixed using the launch option mentioned above. Alternatively one can use launch option "-dx11" instead to force the game to use DX11.
Game works without any problems out the box. The problem with sound volumes appear to have been fixed, and also mouse controls worked fine.
Works out of the box, played all the games included without issues
Completed full playthroughs of all of them except toon tower.
Setting launch option "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command%" fixes crackling
Alt-Tab does not minimize the game
Game launches to a black screen and then nothing happens (same as with devs other game Beekyr). Different Proton launch options and disabling overlays make no difference.
Game worked out of the box
Struggled to run at 60fps with highest settings at 1440p
Game does not launch
With Proton 5.0-4 game does not launch, Steam just says the game is running. With previous Proton 5.0-3 works.
Works out of the box with good performance
Unable to switch properly between fullscreen and desktop, some of the desktop remains visible.
Game works with Valve experimental Mesa ACO driver 19.1.0+aco+git1566466462-fc0fdb637b4-1bionic1. A couple of minor issues remain, if selecting adaptive vsync in the games options the fps tanks to single digits. Switching between desktop/fullscreen is not seamless, the cinnamon taskbar remains visible. See issue #1183 on Github
Game is playable but the mouse pointer floats downwards with each mouse click. See Proton github issue #1418
Game works perfectly out of the box (the Unity mouse pointer floating/jumping issue was fixed in this Proton version)
Playable out of the box with good performance
The game does not support all resolutions and this could be a problem with some setups. If you want to force resolution you can use launch option "-screen-width 2560 -screen-height 1440" for example for forcing 2560x1440 resolution (forcing resolution does change the aspect ratio of the game)
Works out of the box, completed full playthrough without any issues
The game also performed well on my setup.
Current build of the game is playable out of the box
Game is still in active development and only 2 out of 3 episodes have been released. I think there are rendering issues with hair, because it looks noisier than it should. However it looks the same on Windows, so I think this is just a bug/problem with the game.
Works without problems out of the box. One previous report I think described screen tearing, but I did not notice any.
Game won't start, nothing happens Steam just says it is running. Different launch options did not make a difference.
Unplayable past the main menu, starting the game there is just a green screen
Tried also experimental and GE, made no difference
Cursor does not work in menues, and switching between desktop and the game the cursor gets stuck. Other than that the game works fine.
Game works out of the box without issues
For better performance use launch option "PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%". There is no longer an issue with the mouse pointer, also note that the intro segment is supposed to be black with just subtitles. There is no video either on Windows (at least from what I have seen from youtube playthroughs).
No issues out of the box
With Proton there is now good performance out of the box with this game, without needing any launch options (as D9VK has been merged into DXVK)
Everything works out of the box, the text that was missing on previous Proton versions is now displayed properly.
Works perfectly except with a big approximately 30% performance hit, 35-50fps at 2560x1600 resolution. Oddly the game runs at seemingly same performance regardless of quality settings or resolution, so might as well set everything on Ultra. All the previous problems with text missing and mouse drifting/jumping have been fixed.
Works out of the box but with a performance hit
There is a noticeable worse fps with Proton
-screen-width 2560 -screen-height 1440
Game has some bugs that are not specific to Proton/Linux. There are rendering errors/missing graphics if you play the game in a 16:10 aspect ratio resolution. One can force a 16:9 ratio resolution by setting a Steam launch option for example "-screen-width 2560 -screen-height 1440"
Unplayable past the main menu, starting the game there is just a green screen
Same as with the developers previous games, no difference with GE or Experimental
Game works out of the box but videos are missing, videos are in WMV, VC-1 + WMA
Game won't start, just a black window pops up for a second and then closes. Launch options made no difference.
Everything works perfectly out of the box. Tested also with Nintendo Switch Pro controller.
Demo worked without issues
Played through the full demo without any issues. Some minor stuttering but nothing serious. Cut-scenes are real-time and game uses DX11, so not seeing any reason why the full game on release would not work.
Works perfectly out of the box (mouse drifting/jumping issue has been fixed with this version).
Works perfectly, except switching between fullscreen/desktop
Game does not minimize on alt+tab, behaves like borderless, not sure if any different from Windows
Works out of the box without issues
I played v1.04 of the full game. The game has an alternative rendering mode in the settings if you experience graphical glitches (game warns that there could be issues with some AMD GPUs). The standard rendering mode worked fine on my system though.
Runs out of the box with performance between 30-60fps at 1080p. Worked fine with a Switch Pro Controller, but mouse controls are very erratic and directions get stuck when looking around. Rating Bronze because of broken mouse controls, but with a controller the game is Silver.
Runs out of the box, as of this Proton version 4.2-1 both mouse and controller works fine. Boarderline platinum, rating silver only because the performance even when taking Proton overhead into consideration seems worse than expected, game runs at 30-60fps at 1080p on a Vega 56. Reducing the resolution to 720p the game runs at a solid 60fps.
Game works flawlessly except that the configuration menu font/text has some artifacts. Text is legible enough that practically it is not a problem, but still it is a flaw that does not occur in Windows.
Game won't start, tried different Proton launch options and disabling Steam overlays.
Works without issues in Fullscreen. Alt+Enter to Windowed mode does not work, just results in a completely black window.
Works out of the box, completed full playthrough without any issues.
No problems and performance is also good as expected for ps2 style graphics.
Works out of the box, completed a full playthrough without any issues
Pay attention to the keyboard controls that the game displays briefly. At some point I thought the game had soft locked, until I realized you need to press the Q key to exit looking at thing.
With current versions of regular Proton the game crashes on Day 2. With Proton Experimental bleeding edge branch game works without issues.
To enable the bleeding edge branch of Proton experimental on Steam: Right click Proton Experimental in Steam Library > Click on Betas > Select "bleeding edge".
Completed full game (v1.06), including all possible outcomes/endings without any issues
Note that like with most other Chilla's Art games the settings/options are not accessible from the games main menu. You have to start the game, then hit the "escape" key to access the settings.
Game does not respond to input on the first menu screen. Tried with different Proton launch options.
Game works without problems with launch option "PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%". I tested with the drivers from Valves experimental Mesa+ACO PPA.
Game runs out of the box without issues
Be aware that the game is very dark and you need to pay attention to small details that are barely visible even on a large screen. So this would not be a good experience on Steam Deck. I played the launch day version, hopefully the developer adresses the visibility issues with some future update.
Game works without issue after changing language manually
Game works well and with good performance. However the game defaulted to Chinese language, had to change language manually in the games settings. Like a previous report mentioned to change the language: Select 4th option from the top for Options > Select 3rd option from the top for System > Click the dropdown box and select English
Works perfectly except that the game always launches minimized, so you have to bring up the screen/window. Note the games launcher does display Japanese characters, that is to be expected as it is the same on Windows unless your system is set to Japanese locale.
Perfect except that game always launches minimized. The launcher does not display Japanese character, this is the same as on Windows unless you have Japanese locale.
Playable but with poor performance and translation issues
With quality settings maxed on a RX 7900 GRE game runs at around 40-60fps at 1440p resolution (the starting area at the beginning is about as bad as it gets on performance).
The only graphical setting that makes any noticeable performance difference was lowering resolution or disabling "3D shadows" (but that has a signifant impact on image quality). The shadow setting is not accessible from the main menu, you have to start the game and then hit the "escape" key to access more graphical setting.
In this game I think it is a better compromise to just leave the graphics maxed when possible, and instead lower the resolution or upscale. I used gamescope to upscale using launch option "gamescope -h 1200 -H 1440 -F fsr -f -- %command%" to get a solid 60fps even in the troublesome areas.
The game in current state (release day version) has poor performance and the English translation is lacking. Some of the settings accessible from the main menu have not been translated. Also all of the settings are not available from the games main menu, you have to first start the game and then pause and bring up a settings menu by hitting the escape key.
