I was unable to start the game with default/more recent version of proton/proton GE. Switching to Proton 3.7.8 worked fine for me. The on screen keyboard need to be manually brought up when saving.

Tried 3 official proton version with no luck. Also tried without any launch paramters at first. Later I have tried DRI_PRIME=1 modegamerun %command% parameter with the same luck.
The game would not launch successfully in full-screen unless I either (1) disconnected my eGPU or (2) switched to explicitly using the eGPU with the "DRI_PRIME=1 %command%" launch option. My eGPU is an AMD RX580; it does not appear in the hardware report because Steam isn't launched to use the eGPU itself.

Game works the same as on windows with similar performance and the same bugs. The game is running on the glitchy AGS engine. Steam overlay only works in OpenGL or DX9 mode, game might crash if you don't increase the "sprite cache" in games setup. Sometimes the game hangs during launch, so you have to kill the process and start it again. Rating platinum because those are bugs with the game/engine it is running on, the experience is the same as on Windows.

Seem to play fine at a fixed 30 FPS. Did not test saving and loading.
The game is playable.
Steam overlay is broken in OpenGL and software rending, but same bug exists on Windows.
