A buggy mess Proton & native. Dew to the games progression system it is ez to get back to ware you where pre glichout.
Set frame cap to 60 the menu will run at ungodly frame rate if you dont cap. Do not set cap at 30, game will glich at 30FPS
Crackling audio also present on windos. (I9 4090 with SSD)
alpha textures may stack out of order if you are seeing a ranbow screan in video or menu this is what has ocared.
You will need to swap between full screen and windowed to have proper scaling this is also a isue on windows at 960p or lower not a proton problem is inharent in games code.
Crashed when returning to game play after a video on occasion.
Any object that is classed as actor not a object may vanish and soft lock you exit and reload save.
A little buggy on all platforms. Nentendo and Windos included.
Main menu freezes when changing to fullscreen or borderless. This went away when I deactivated nvidia setting ForceFullCompositionPipeline.
I tried this with Proton-7 first, but it crashed as soon as I clicked 'New Game'. I have not tried with Proton-8, but both Experimental and GE work if you disregard the fullscreen issues which apparently were due to that one nvidia setting.

Videos may not load using normal proton(did not for me). use ge-proton if you don't want any issues with videos at all
use gamescope to fix buggy alt+tab

30 FPS cap
Game seems to run at around 58fps, with low GPU utilization, despite having having a high refresh rate monitor To unlock the fps either:
- Force disable Vsync using MangoHud
- Create a file
dxvk.conf
in the game directory - Add the line
dxgi.syncInterval = 0
After that your fps should be unlocked, if you want to limit the fps, just useDXVK_FRAME_RATE=# %command%
as a launch option, where # is the max desired fps
- Create a file
57 FPS by default at most of time
random crashes, not much
some movies leaves a white screen with audio, no video.
The game now runs on Proton Experimental without issue. No need to install Proton-GE, if for whatever reason you'd prefer not to.
Runs full speed on Deck using Proton-GE. You can lock it at 30FPS for longer battery life, if you desire.

some movie scenes don't play, instead just a black screen
Using Proton-GE 7.16-1, the previous issue with certain cutscenes is now resolved. Game plays pretty much perfect.
Proton GE 7-14 gives me visual glitches on the main menu, but game is otherwise playable. Playing on Proton Experimental eliminates the glitch at the main menu, but both versions have the same problem with cutscenes. In-game cutscenes play just fine, but others (that presumably use Media Foundation or whatever) don't work yet.
PROTON_NO_D3D12=1 %command%
On first launch game displayed windowed despite Fullscreen was selected. To get the game to switch into fullscreen had to select a resolution lower than native and save. Then one after that could switch back to native resolution and the game remained in fullscreen.
Without ProtonGE and the launch option, there was just a black screen when starting the game. Needing to disable DirectX12 seems illogical, but for some reason it made a difference on my setup.
used 30fps cap
Proton GE is live savior!
Shared Resources are implemented and working well in GE 7-10, so Fatal Frame is now completely playable.

Game launches but will stay on a black screen once booted as does not progress any further.
Tested with Proton experimental and Proton 6.21-GE-2
Game Starts, dies when creating new game

I had to use Proton Experimental just to even get to the main menu, as anything else would give me a white screen.
I can play with the settings, but actually trying to play the game just crashes everything.

Game can be made to partially work with a save from after the prologue
The game requires a few things to "run" for the brief spots it can be played with the current Proton experimental. You'll need mf-install, and to set d3d9.deferSurfaceCreation = False in dxvk.conf.
Unfortunately, the game will hang whenever it uses a shared resource, which is used to overlay pre-rendered video on backgrounds. The game will soft-lock and you'll have to alt-F4 to exit.

The game is unplayable at the moment.
*White screen on main menu when i tried using Proton Ge *Menu screen works but crashing when i tried to play with Proton Experimental

does not start the first time. installing mf library does not show scene. just goodbye but lets pause
proton - experimental

Crashes on "New Game", if you can even view the main menu.
I've tried a few regular Proton versions, everytime the main menu is just a white, blank screen. You can hear sound and selections but can't see anything.
With the latest Proton GE (20), the game simply crashed on the main menu.
Finally, with Proton Experimental I was able to view the main menu, change settings and all that, but the game crashes as soon as it enters the loading to a new game.

Game uses shared resources, won't run
The engine is buggy, and it uses DirectX shared resources which aren't implemented on Proton, so the game crashes with several error messages:
'err: D3D11Device::OpenSharedResource: Not implemented'
The menu works but the selection moves way too fast, and many Windows users report that the screen framerate must be set to 60 for the game to run there.
