Finally works out of the box!
Sometimes there's a black screen when it starts, but if you ALT-Tab to another app and then back to the game, it runs properly.

At first the game didn't run (hitting play didn't run the game). After trying some suggested launch options (and reverting those) the game suddenly started without any issues and continued to do so. Game itself runs almost flawlessly apart from some minor frame drops every now and then but that could be the game itself.

Install and play with Proton 9.0-3
using 3440x1440 fullscreen mode, alt-tab minimizes the game and renders a small window when opened again. windowed mode does not have 21:9 aspect ratio. there is no borderless fullscreen option.
Supports ultrawide resolution in fullscreen mode. Singleplayer is supposed to be unlocked fps (with physics breaking over 185 fps), however the game was locked to 60 fps for me on a 165 Hz VRR system. Many important fixes and notes on PCGW which sadly cannot make this burning dumpster fire of a game good but can at least make it less horrendous.

Doesn't start
gamemoderun %command%
I tried all Proton and Proton-GE versions and all the start parameters I saw here. The game doesn't start at all.
Works Great
gamemoderun %command%
gamemoderun %command%
Played from start to finish, no fps drops, no graphical issues or audio, everything works just fine.
At first, the game refused to launch at all. When I tried to launch from "Gaming Mode" it showed "Updating executable" and then just crashed. Tried to launch the game from Desktop Mode, opens dialog box with title "Duke Nukem Forever -Steam" and a description "Completing Installation ..." with the three Dots alternating from one to three (it is a typical grey Steam dialog / Pop Up, it's not from the game). Then showed another tittled "Steam - Error" Description was: "steam servers are too busy to handle your request (error 2)".
I do not know what is exactly what I did to solve it, but the steps I followed were:
- Switch to: 5.0 try to launch - Fail
- Add parameters PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command% - Fail
- Changed to 6.3-8 - Fail
- Add parameters PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command% - Success
- Removed version change + maintain parameters - Success
- Removed version change + removed parameters - Success
Seems like you have to run the game with parameters once then play normally.
Movies Turned green sometimes.
Some extra lag.
Seems like you have to run the game with some parameters once for it to finish installing and then remove the parameters on the next launch.

It worked great
I played the single player campaign, the DLC campaign and some multiplayer matches and I had no problems at all.
Mouse speed seems oddly dependent on frame rate or something, but hard to tell if this is a Linux/Proton thing or not.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%
Doesn't boot using recent dxvk
Just launch and play!
When drinking a beer the game renders some green pixels that disappear after the drunk state it's over.
When you enter a "sleep mode" on deck and resume playing the game states its saving checkpoints. After quiting the game and clicking contiue the game remembers only the last save before "sleep". Tested numerous times. I dont recomend to use sleep during gameplay.
Finally working out of the box! (except for alt-tabbing out and back in)
Couldn't change back to full screen mode after alt-tabbing out, had to restart the game.
As other users already stated, this game used to run like trash (if at all), but now it's running buttery smooth, no further steps needed. Just make sure you stay in full screen mode, as you may have to restart the game after alt-tabbing out. Gamepad's working too!
When drinking a beer the game renders some green pixels that disappear after the drunk state it's over.
When entering to a new area the games sets "Checkpoint saved" but if you quit to the menu and click on "continue" the game will set you on the start of the area that you were playing before, sometimes seems like it works other times it doesn't. It have made me lose progress from all the area I've already beaten.
Sometimes, when there are a few enemies on the screen the game stutters and cannot keep the 60 fps (all of this playing on 800p and in high res)
The green pixels while drunk doesn't affect too much to the game, the only bad thing is the save data that makes you lose progress. It's a shame because you don't really know if it has been really saved or not.

Not super surprising that it doesn't work on deck since it is listed as unsupported, but kinda weird that it won't even install. Steam just stops at Installing: Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable (step 2 of 3).
Works out of the box, no major issues
Stutters / framedrops. Vsyncs helps
Other than Alt-Tab not working, this worked great. No issues in performance or gameplay.
Alt-Tab caused my system to lock up.
The game runs pretty well. Kubuntu 20.04. I tried 45 min of single player and 30 min of multiplayer.
The game runs pretty well. Kubuntu 20.04. I tried 45 min of single player and 30 min of multiplayer. You just need to reduce the mouse sensitivity because the default is too high. I only ran in full screen mode. Vsync is on in the game and it was working. I ran at 1920x1200. The game is modern so it properly recognizes that resolution. I also enabled MangoHud and it was showing 60 FPS.
Tried Proton Experimental, 6.3 and 5.13. The game quits before showing anything.
Finished game with minor issues
Game / DE crashes when alt-tabbing out
On every start, mouse friction to the right is like 10x other directions. Toggling vsync fixes it
Overall it works great.
When under the beer boost a few small green squares appear, don't know if this is a generic game bug.
Alt-Tab out of game will leave the game in window mode. You need to restart to get Fullscreen again.
Works fine since CEG titles were supported
Runs flawlessly since the last patch to fix Steam's CEG.
Do not alt-tab. Returning to the window causes it to be black with just sound, and it does not enter back to fullscreen.
Run the game in windowed mode if you plan to alt-tab.
Full play-through with mouse and keyboard
After Alt-Tab, the game window is no longer full-screen. Disabling and re-enabling full-screen in the options fixes it.

Game runs great with Proton Experimental with the official drm Steam client release (on 11/20.)
Great xbox controller support! I would like playstation icons and controller support!

Proton- Experimental are better than the Proton-6.21-GE-1. In Proton-6.21-GE-1 the Mouse go to the bottom of the scree until you take V-Sync on/ or off. In Proton- Experimantal this issue are not to see.

Proton-Experimental
Works with DXVK (DX9), it didn’t work with gamescope, but without any launch parameter the game worked fine.
