Game will play but ingame Cutscenes won't All other Cutscenes, like the Intros, Openning and Start of the Game do. To get Ingame Cutscenes Running I Forced it to use Experimental (Proton Experimental). Cutscene have Audio Ticks.

Manga cutscenes have colored lines running diagonally across them
Without the switch to proton 6, boss introduction cutscenes won't play, they only show a black screen. They can be skipped though.

Error is all over the steamcommunity forums too. This should not be Gold rated.

Requires older Proton to show boss introduction cutscenes. Keyboard input is supported, but the in-game hints are always referencing controller buttons, and remapping the keys has to be added as a mod.

Installed River City Girls UserXpMod 1.3, remapped keyboard controls
Requires older Proton to show boss introduction cutscenes. Keyboard input is supported, but the in-game hints are always referencing controller buttons, there's no remapping or even a key map help in the game itself.

Runs pretty much perfectly using proton 8
Very minor artifacting during manga cutscenes

Boss intro cutscenes lacked audio
Others have suggested Proton 6.3-8 to fix the audio issue, but my game wouldn't launch with it. The audio issue only affects a tiny, insignificant part of the game, so don't worry too much about it.
By default the resolution is set to 700x400 and some of the text is cut off. Changing to 720p fixes the issue.
Boss cutscenes wouldn't work on default proton. You could skip them by holding a button, but they wouldn't end by themselves even if you waited forever.
Works perfect once you fix proton version and then resolution.
Boss cutscenes display a black screen
With current Proton/Experimental/GE versions, the boss introduction videos do not play correctly.
The game is fully functional out of the box with the current (7.0) Steam Proton, but some boss cutscenes do not work - weirdly enough the opening video and a few of those boss videos are playing (a step up from Proton-6.3 which could not play the intro).
With GE-Proton7-21 all cutscenes are in place and everything runs perfectly. No issues at all with two USB controllers for co-op, and the game can be completed w/all achievements (although, achievements do not unlock immediately and only pop-up in bulk when you exit the game - probably not related to Proton).
This game is considered a verified title for the Steam Deck, but it is not perfect. The problem was with the short pre-boss cutscenes. Using the recommended version of Proton resulted in a black screen. ProtonGE resulted in the cutscenes working, but without audio. I then checked this website and saw someone recommend Proton 6.3-8, which worked perfectly. Other than that, the game worked fine.

Missing cutscenes would ruin the experience for your average gamer, but simply changing to Proton 6.3-8 will fix all issues.
Some text was cut off due to the default resolution being strange. Changing it fixed this.
Audio was not playing in certain cutscenes until switching to an older Proton (6.3-8). Now it's perfect.
Video playback wasn't working in certain cutscenes on other versions of Proton.
Default resolution needs changing on Deck.
Flawless experience on Proton 6.3-8 - unfortunately many gamers on Steam Deck won't know to do this.
Sides were cut off until changing resolution.
Boss cutscenes would display a black screen.
Cutscene bugs mean this should not be Verified.
Works fine
Disconnecting or connecting a controller while the game is running confuses the game so that it refuses to work with any controller. Controllers must be connected before starting the game for them to work.

Proton Experimental 6.3-20210924 - perfect gameplay & boss cinematic, but it failed to play the start game cinematic of Comic Book intro.
- Proton-6.1-GE-2 - for the initial start-game Comic cinematic, but not for the rest of the game.
- gamemoderun %command% - launch flag of “FeralInteractive gamemode”. It’s installed by default on Ubuntu, but not Pop_OS!
- export DRI_PRIME=1 - I ran this command in the terminal to switch to my laptop’s dedicated GPU. Then I ran steam from the same Shell with: steam command.
Depending on the Proton version, the intro Comic Book Cinematic will either be missing or not missing.
Attempts with Custom Protons
To see the start game Comic book Cinematic, use Proton-6.1-GE-2, for the rest of the game the experimental should work just fine as the GE one fails to play boss cinematics. I also tried using the newer Glorious Eggroll Proton version, but they didn’t seem to work:
- Proton-6.8-GE-1
- Proton-6.9-GE-2
- Proton-6.10-GE-1
- Proton-6.15-GE-2
Enabling AMD GPU CI & CIK support (for older GPUs)
My previous failures to run the game failed (and hence I gave the "borked" reports) because for some reason Pop!_OS installation defaulted to using Radeon drivers over AMDGPU. I'm aware that this tip doesn't fit into this report perfectly, but this problem was not mentioned in any guide on YouTube I watched... so I'm posting this for beginners' sake. Apparently my AMD Radeon HD 8870M GPU needed to have experimental amdgpu Southern Islands (SI) and Sea Islands (CIK) support enabled. If you have Radeon HD 7000 or 8000 series GPUs, then enabling this support might just solve your GPU problems. I enabled all 4 flags listed in this link.

Can't get past the opening movie.
Proton-6.12-GE-1, Proton-6.10-GE-1, Latest official, experimental, mf-install, nothing works. Either a black screen with some protons, or I can see the movie with others but either way it freezes part way in and I have to force stop it closed.

Glorious Eggroll
Occasionally it was making a sound effect similar to: When an error pops up on OS & you click an invalid button, a sound is played. Now imagine you held that button pressed and for every tick of it being pressed the sound would play.
On the very first level of the game, ground and walls textures were missing. It looked like the main character & NPCs were floating in a void.
Also the intro cinematic after couple seconds of playing froze up. The sound of the cinematic was playing, but the cinematic was stuck on single frame, until it finished and thrown me into main menu.
Video feed tells you to click various controller button. However, since I'm using mouse & keyboard, I've got no clue what to press. Through trial and error, I found out that the buttons I had to press are: "space", "h", "u", etc. Essentially, you'll find yourself guessing what buttons to press to play.
It's Proton version dependent. I didn't play long enough to find out how stable the best performing Proton version is.
Neither of new vanilla Proton 6's even launch the game. So I ended up trying the GloriousEggroll forks that have been reported as success here.
At the time of writing, my tests show that the best running version is still Proton-6.1-GE-2. You might as well say that nothing has changed since when the last reports with this version were made. Actually, things are worse. This is because the previous reports stated that the Proton-6.1-GE-2 made the game run relatively fine. Maybe it did for those people, however it did not for me: I had missing textures, sound playback issues, slight lag, some video cinematics weren't getting played right and the game did not recognise mouse & keyboard.
I've tried the following GE fork versions:
- Proton-6.1-GE-2
- Proton-6.4-GE-1
- Proton-6.8-GE-1
- Proton-6.9-GE-2
- Proton-6.10-GE-1
Most of these version didn't even get to the main menu. The only ones that did were Proton-6.1-GE-2 and Proton-6.8-GE-1. The Proton-6.8-GE-1 crashed upon clicking "Start" on the main menu.
I've tried them all with and without the gamemoderun %command%
option. I also tried the these flags with vanilla Proton-6.3-5 & Proton-6.1-GE-2:
- Disable Esync (PROTON_NO_ESYNC)
- Disable Fsync (PROTON_NO_FSYNC)
- Disable D3D10 (PROTON_NO_D3D10)
They didn't make a difference.

Still borked: official Proton 6 won't even get to the main menu.
Tried the Experimental version titled: "experimental-6.3-20210629". Also tried the Proton 6.3-5.
Everything works except for the cutscenes before bosses. It's playable but you'd be missing a lot of the games charm
Proton-6.1-GE-2
Animated cutscenes before boss-fights do not play

Everything seems to be working nicely though occasional crashes may still be a thing. Save often.
Proton-6.1-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Used Proton-6.1-GE-2
The game crashed after the start menu the first time I tried to run it with Proton-6.1-GE-2. After that I didn't see another crash.
I had been unable to get this game to run at all on Linux until today. I decided to give the newest proton gloriouseggroll release a shot and I was pleasantly surprised to see that all is now working for the most part without much messing around with it.
Most of the game is playable, though key cinematics may be missing.
Startup cinematic doesn't play right

GOG version works great after mf-install, but did not test Steam version. I assume the experience would be the same.
For the GOG version installed in GameHub, I had to run these commands with git already installed through Ubuntu. I also have Steam installed with the latest Proton, but not 100% if that helped or not. Substitute XXXX in the terminal commands below with your current user.
git clone https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install.git && cd mf-install
then
WINEPREFIX="/home/XXXX/Games/GOG/River_City_Girls/_gamehub/compat/proton_latest/pfx" ./mf-install.sh
This was the GOG version installed via GameHub. Used Proton to install the game and not InnoExtract.

As others have noted, you have to apply the fix found at: https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install
Once I did this, everything runs just fine with an Xbox 360 controller.

I am updating my initial report of Borked to confirm that the fix described by the others below resolved my problem. Using the Media Foundation fix here: https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install and setting the Wine prefix as described resolved my issue. Can also confirm that if you have Windows installed on another machine you can copy the same DLLs from there for use with the script if you don't want to trust random DLLs from the internet.
The only minor niggle is that it defaults to the keyboard being the first player, so it kept registering the second player as the controller until I unplugged the keyboard and started it up without it. Otherwise, seems to run perfectly.

it works only with the utility "https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install" it is a bit difficult to install but the result is perfect, the performance is correct, and it works well with the control of xbox one, the game saves correctly and the cinematics look great except the first time, restart the game and look correctly

Seems to work fine with the "https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install" workaround installed. Even with fix installed there may be a chance of the video not loading and are given a black screen but you can then just skip the scene.

River City Girls does launch, but only displays a copyright screen, then gets stuck on a black screen. User is forced to end the process manually to exit. I attempted to run it through all of the available Proton versions at this time of writing, in addition to several of the tweaks (such as Esync, etc.) Nothing appears to get it beyond this stage.

Upon launch the game gets to a trademark screen but then remains black for a long period of time. I disabled esync, forced large address aware, and even used wine D3d11 with no success.
