You need the launch option WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=b,n" %command% to have audio in cutscenes. All other game audio is fine. Others have mentioned occasional crackling, but I never encountered any.
Aside from the audio fix, you'll also need PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 %command% as a launch option, otherwise the game won't even start.
I didn't have any audio in cutscenes. I tried using the launch option WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=b,n" %command% which fixes the same problem in Alan Wake, but to no avail.
gamemoderun %command%
I edited the game's .ini file to increase the framerate. It can also be used to unlock the bonus content such as the original Alice game. There are guides posted by others below on how to do that.
Although my XBOX ONE controller worked fine, the button prompts ingame assumed I was using kb+m.
Every now and again the game would crash randomly. It doesn't happen that often.
At first I followed what other reports said but the game wouldn't start. It was only once I disabled Steam overlay and switched to Proton Experimental that the game booted up. Aside from the aforementioned issues, the game ran great. Make sure to turn PhysX down to low to make the game run better.
Works fine. Nothing to report.
Like the first game, it takes a few minutes to do its initial first time setup.
Like the other two, this runs without any issues.
Just let the first time setup do its thing, it usually takes about 5 minutes or so.
Works perfect. No problems to report.
When you start up the game for the first time, it'll take a few minutes to set everything up, but after that it'll start within seconds.
Runs very well, almost as well as native Windows. No performance issues or major bugs.
Very occasional crackling, doesn't usually last for more than a minute or so.
I don't know if this is a Proton issue or not, but the cutscenes seem to be a bit off, almost as if they're running at a lower framerate or something. Character's voices are slightly out of sync as well. This is a pretty minor issue though and it doesn't have any effect on actual gameplay.
If the game is left paused for a while, the game becomes sluggish for a few minutes after unpausing, but it returns to normal fairly quickly.
A couple of random crashes, one after 2 hours of playing, another after 5 minutes.
I tried all official versions of Proton from 5.0 onward after applying the protontricks fixes that others have mentioned, but I always got an error about shaders and couldn't get past the launcher. I tried a (somewhat outdated at this point) version of Proton-GE that I already had installed but that didn't work either. I also tried changing the compatibility mode via Protontricks to Windows 7 and xp, but that didn't work either.
I tried adding the launch option RADV_PERFTEST=aco %command% that older reports mentioned, and that seemed to work, as a progress bar with the message "Protonfixes is running a task, please wait", but after 20 minutes of waiting, nothing was happening so I closed the game via Steam. When I did that the game started up again without my input and I was able to get into the game and start playing.
Once I was in the game it ran fine aside from the problems mentioned above, but I feel I may have just got lucky with the right combination of settings and fixes on my machine to get the game to run. I don't think that many others will get the same result, considering the number of reports from others that have tried the same things as me and had no luck. As always with these things, your mileage my vary.
If you can tolerate regular freezes, then the game works well enough.
It crackled a lot during the splash screen logos, but after starting the game up a few times it seems to stop. All other audio is fine.
The first couple of hours or so of playing can be affected with slowdown, presumably due to shader caching. It clears up after a while. However, some indoor locations (in particular the courthouse) seem to always have problems with low fps, even after extended play. It helps to disable the DX11 options in the launcher settings.
Every 1-2 hours the game will freeze, and a fatal error message will show up complaining about missing files. Luckily autosaves are frequent, but if it happens at a bad time you can lose progress. On one occasion the game froze during the credits and I had to redo the last boss battle. Just skip the credits to be safe.
I played through the entire campaign including most of the side missions and the Harley Quinn's Revenge DLC. I didn't try any of the challenge maps or other modes.
There's a bit of slowdown when first starting up the game, presumably due to shader compilation. Using the following launch options can help: RADV_PERFTEST=aco PROTON_NO_GLSL=1 %command%
Every hour or so, the game will freeze up and a small window will pop up and warn about missing files, or filenames not being found. I had the exact same issue in Arkham City, but the crashes seem more frequent here. Luckily autosaves are fairly frequent, but sometimes they can happen at annoying times like just before you finish a predator encounter or boss fight, so beware.
I played through the entire campaign as well as some, but not all of the Arkham Episodes.
Runs fine after adding a launch option and disabling PhysX.
Make sure you disable PhysX otherwise you'll get stuttering. I ran everything else at maximum settings and the game ran fine.
Like with Arkham City, I had crashes every 1-2 hours, but after adding the launch option -nostartupmovies, they stopped completely. I'm not sure how skipping the intros stopped the crashes, but I'm not going to complain.
There's issues with button prompts and stuttering upon first starting the game, but it's still perfectly playable and enjoyable.
I played with an XBOX ONE controller the whole time, but all button prompts were for mouse and keyboard, and there's no way to change it as far as I can tell. It can be confusing at first, but you'll get used to it eventually.
Every time you start playing, the framerate is in the single digits for the first couple of minutes or so, and there's a LOT of stuttering. After that though the game runs fine.
Despite trying different versions of Proton and tweaks listed here, the game just wouldn't start. Native version runs well enough though.
I tried Proton versions 6.3, 5.13, 5.0 and 4.11. I didn't try any of the GloriousEggroll Protons though. Among other things I tried installing xact, but that didn't work despite others having success with it. Every time I pressed play the game would say it was starting up, then about 10 seconds later it would stop.
The Linux version runs pretty well though, so it's not a big deal. I did get some pretty bad texture pop-in though, but by applying Lotryas' fix in his report below, that was solved. I was running everything at Ultra and I only got stuttering when I first started playing, probably just textures being loaded into memory. Overall a great experience, just not with Proton.
You need a crack to get around the DRM, but otherwise this game runs pretty well with only minor issues.
It's hard to explain, but it's like there's a high-pitched crackling/buzzing in the background. It's especially noticeable when there's rumbling sounds playing, but usually quiet enough that it's easy to zone out, and it never gets really annoying. Using the launch options that others have suggested below didn't fix it. From what I remember playing the PS3 version it may have happened occasionally there as well, though nowhere near as noticeable, so this may not be a Proton issue. All ingame audio is otherwise fine.
At the start and end of some chapters there are some minor artefacts when level transitions are in tunnels.
You need a cracked .exe in order to start the game due to DRM issues. Just follow the links posted by others below and replace the .exe already in the game folder.
Aside from the above issues, the only other bugs I had was occasional delay between grapple-kicking an enemy and actually hitting them which never happened to me on the PS3 version of the game. I also teleported out of the map once when I grapple-kicked an enemy, but that may just be a regular bug and nothing to do with Proton. I didn't try multiplayer, though I highly doubt anyone is still playing online nowadays anyway.
The game won't start unless you enter the following command in the terminal:
protontricks 21680 physx
Like Bionic Commando '09, there's a noticeable buzzing/crackling sound in the background that seems to vary in intensity depending on the other sounds playing. It's not as bad in this game though, and it never gets annoying. All other audio is fine.
Has some performance issues, but is still playable.
There are (presumably) CGs in between episodes, but they don't show, instead there's something akin to a TV test card in their place. The text still shows up fine though. The opening CGs before the title screen also show up normally.
When starting up the game, it defaults to 1280x768. Even if you change this in the settings and save it, you'll need to reselect your resolution everytime you start up the game. You can only do this from the main menu so make sure you do this before you load your game. Keep in mind the highest resolution this game supports is 1080p.
If you have the item menu open when moving around the cube, the game basically becomes a slideshow. Keep the menu closed when moving around a lot. Also the game can be a bit sluggish when first loading in.
On two occasions the game froze up completely, which made me lose about an hour of progress. There's no autosaving in this game, so save frequently.
I tried multiple versions of Proton, but never made it past the ASW logo.
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
I tried Proton 7.0-6, Experimental and GE 7-43, the latest version I have downloaded. I also tried a couple of launch options that others have suggested, and even tried changing my resolution in case that was causing problems that others have mentioned. Nothing worked.
Runs fine, some mild stuttering every now and again, usually when loading into new areas. XBOX ONE controller works as expected.
PROTON_USE_D9VK=true DXVK_ASYNC=1 WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8.dll=n,b" gamemoderun %command%
I installed SilentPatch and the Widescreen Fix Patch, as well as limiting the fps in the game's .ini file.
Occasional slowdown and stuttering from time to time. Not too distracting or annoying.
I was able to run the game at full 4K resolution, although in the game's settings I had to slowly make my way up to 4K. If I changed to 4K straight away the screen would go black. My XBOX ONE controller worked perfectly.
Works pretty well, nothing major to report.
As others have mentioned, when you start up the game, it'll stay on a black screen. Just press ESC and it should bring you to the main menu.
Runs perfectly. Completed main campaign and Revelations DLC with no issues at all.
Custom cursors flicker, but otherwise the game plays just as well as on Windows.
Using custom cursors caused the cursor to constantly flicker when moved around. Otherwise it still works fine.
Transparent textures on tools and weapons is still an issue as of 6.3-5. Aside from that the game runs okay on all versions.
In one particular section in the subway tunnels, where you have to turn two steam valves, all audio except enemy voices and footsteps seemed to stop. After that section other audio played as normal.
On all Proton versions beyond 4.11, all handheld tools and weapons were transparent, with just a faint outline of them. This made using the detective tools difficult, though not impossible. All other in-game objects and textures were seemingly unaffected.
Mouse sensitivity seems to be really high in this game. I don't know if it's a Proton-related issue or just how the game is, but I had to change it to the second-lowest setting to get something resembling what I'd consider the "default" setting in other games.
Although the game runs fine on the latest version, I would recommend going with 4.11 due to the aforementioned texture issues. The game still runs just as well.
Runs great on Proton 5.13, just make sure to get the original audio files for the definitive experience.
Not an issue related to Proton, but follow this guide to get the original music, voices and sounds, it's a vast improvement over the Steam version's.
Proton 6.3 doesn't work, but 5.13 works just fine. Completed Doom 3 and both expansions with no bugs or issues.
Use the launch option PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %command% to fix the crackling audio.
Using Proton 6.3, the game would open and the main menu would work as expected, but when you select a new game, there's just a black screen, but the audio still plays as normal. With Proton 5.13 Doom 3 runs flawlessly, except for the aforementioned audio crackling which is easily remedied. I didn't try Doom 1 or 2, but don't see any reason why they wouldn't work.
There's issues with kb+m controls, but that's because of the game itself and not Proton's fault.
During cutscenes there's a green bar along the bottom of the screen.
Quite often during gameplay mouse clicks and keyboard presses would stop being registered, or be delayed. It seems to happen most often during class trials. It can make the game very annoying to play sometimes, especially when it happens during one of the minigames like Argument Armament which require precise button presses. I found that going out of fullscreen and back again (Alt+Enter) helps sometimes, but not always. Apparently this also happens on Windows, so it's not Proton related, but still worth mentioning. I didn't try a controller with this game.
The game would sometimes freeze when I Alt-tabbed out of it, but not always.
Works great apart from very occasional audio problems and a couple of other minor things.
On a couple of occasions during conversations the voices stopped completely, and sometimes some of the sound effects would stop as well. The only solution I found was to close the game and restart. It doesn't happen that often.
A bit of stuttering when loading into new areas. Otherwise the game ran fine.
During the final boss battle, DO NOT use the revolver, it'll cause the game to freeze and you'll have to restart the game. This isn't caused by Proton as it also happens on Windows, but it's something you should be aware of.
Plays fine, no major bugs or flaws that I could see. Haven't tried native so I can't compare the two.
I had a few crashes in my 28 hour playthrough, but I used to get the odd crash when I played this on XBOX 360, so it's probably not Proton related.
Works perfectly out of the box. Great experience.
When Alt-Tabbing back into the game, the cursor stays on screen with no way to get rid of it other than closing and restarting the game. I just moved it to the far corner of the screen where I wouldn't see it.
Runs great. No problems to report.
When you press play, it'll take about 20 seconds before the game actually starts.
It still freezes when you try to exit, but otherwise runs great.
The game stutters a lot when loading in new areas. Probably just shaders compiling.
When you try to exit the game from the ingame menu, it'll freeze. Close it via the Steam client instead.
Completed the main game and the DLC missions. No problems or issues. Runs like a native Windows game.
Make sure you don't skip Vulkan shader processing in order to get the best performance.
If you Alt-Tab out of the game and back into, the game would usually, though not always run extremely slow; even moving the mouse in the menu would have about a second of delay, and the whole game would become a slideshow. The only way to fix this is to exit and restart the game.
If I skipped the Vulkan shader processing before the game started, then it would run noticeably worse than if I let it run. The first couple of times when I opened the game it took ages, over 5 minutes the first time. After multiple times though it speeds up, to the point where it only takes a few seconds. Regardless, it's definitely worth doing.
I was able to run everything at ultra with no noticeable performance dips or other graphical issues. I also never had any crashes or other problems.
It sometimes has the same problems with Alt-Tabbing as Dishonored 2, but otherwise runs great.
If you Alt-Tab out and back into the game, most of the time it'll run extremely slowly, even in menus, making the game unplayable. The only fix is to quit the game and restart. This happens for me in Dishonored 2 as well.
This may just be a bug rather than a Proton issue, but one time after reloading a quicksave I couldn't stop walking backwards. I loaded up a different save and it still happened. After exiting the game and restarting, the problem went away.
Unless you have a wired XBOX 360 controller, you're stuck with mouse and keyboard. Otherwise, no problems at all with this game.
I couldn't get my XBOX ONE controller to work properly with this game, even with the controller option selected in the settings menu. All that worked was the right stick moving the cursor, (as if were a mouse) the start button functioning as the back button in menus, and the right trigger being mapped to select options. Obviously I couldn't actually play ingame like this. Apparently the only controller that works with this game ootb is a wired XBOX 360 controller, but I don't have one so I can't test that with Proton.
Aside from those controller woes, I played through the entire game without any crashes, slowdown or other issues. Playing this sort of game with a mouse and keyboard took some getting used to for me after dozens of hours playing on PS2, but it was still very enjoyable. Keep in mind some music from the PS2 version is missing in this version, but that's not related to Proton. You can find the missing music files online, as well as some visual mods as well. I haven't tested the mods in Proton, but the extra music works fine. (Just drag and drop into the game folder.)
On Proton 5.13-5 there was occasional freezing, but Proton 5.13-6 seems to fix this. The game otherwise runs fine.
Minor crackling during the splash screen logos. Otherwise audio is fine.
After completing both the base game and the Following expansion, the game crashed to desktop once the credits had ended. The game would also freeze every few hours or so, especially if it was left paused for a while. However, after Proton updated itself from 5.13-5 to 5.13-6, it never froze once.
A few launch options are all you need. There's some weirdness with shadows, but otherwise there's no problems with the game.
Sometimes in cutscenes the shadows on characters would look weird, as if they weren't being rendered properly. It happened very occasionally during gameplay as well, but not often enough for it to become distracting or annoying.
I played through the entire game including the DLC with no crashes. There's some stuttering when you enter a new area, but that's probably due to shader caching rather than anything related to Proton.
I also used the following launch options for the best experience:
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 gamemoderun %command% -nostartupmovies
Apart from the missing cutscenes and intro, it runs fine. XBOX ONE controller works.
Cutscenes don't seem to show properly. Instead you get a multicoloured screen akin to an old TV test card in it's place, with no audio playing. Pressing A or start usually seems to get past it, but not always. Maybe it just ends when the cutscene does.
All the guns have some transparent textures on them, and the transparency seems to change depending on what angle light sources interact with them. This is similar to what happens in Condemned: Criminal Origins, another Monolith-developed game, though not as bad.
In order to get modern (i.e. 1080p) resolutions in the base game, you need to edit the values in the settings.cfg file, which can be found in:
/steamapps/compatdata/21090/pfx/drive_c/users/Public/Documents/Monolith Productions/FEAR.
For the Extraction Point expansion you need to go to:
/steamapps/compatdata/21110/pfx/drive_c/users/Public/Documents/TimeGate Studios/FEARXP.
You don't need to do this for the Perseus Mandate expansion, as it supports 1080p by default.
In the expansions, sometimes at the start of a new level, you'd be kicked back to the main menu, stating that you were "disconnected from server", despite playing offline in single player mode. If you reloaded a previous checkpoint and reached the next level again, it would still happen. To get around this, you need to go into the performance settings and set everything to minimum and then advance to the next level, at which point it should load up as normal. If it still doesn't work try quitting the game and reloading. Once you're into the next level you can change your settings back again.
I had a couple of crashes during the Perseus Mandate expansion, (runtime error) but otherwise the game was stable. I had no performance problems at all, everything was cranked to maximum and ran super smooth.
Some transparent textures on guns, but otherwise runs very well.
Like the first F.E.A.R., guns have some transparent textures on them. Seems to be a thing with Monolith-developed shooters, as a similar thing happens in Condemned: Criminal Origins.
I played both the main game and the Reborn DLC to completion with everything cranked to maximum settings. I didn't have any crashes or other stability issues. I didn't try multiplayer.
It's slightly sluggish compared to Windows, but still perfectly playable.
It doesn't run as smoothly as on Windows, it's slightly slower, especially after Alt-Tabbing. However the game is still playable, and actually slightly easier due to the slower game speed.
Framerate is lower than expected given my hardware, but it's still playable and enjoyable. My controller wasn't detected at all.
There's a very thin white border around the edge of the screen when fullscreen is enabled.
Despite having a GTX 1080, the framerate for this 20 year old game is consistently below 60fps, and usually around 30-40fps at 4K. I'm not sure if this is because of Proton or the game itself. The game is still perfectly playable at these framerates though, at least for me.
It should be noted that my XBOX ONE controller wasn't detected at all. However, I think that may be just a lack of controller support on the game's part and kb+m works perfectly fine.
Works great aside from some texture pop-in. Keyboard and mouse is recommended for this game.
When moving from one area of the map to the other, especially at high speed, most of the landscape and buildings can disappear for a few seconds. This probably isn't a Proton issue, but something to be aware of as it can be annoying when it happens.
The maximum resolution this game supports by default is 1600x1200. When fullscreen was selected at that resolution, this left a large black area around the rest of my 4K monitor. There's a widescreen patch by ThirteeenAG which can be found here. It won't scale to 4K (probably just 1080p) but it will make the game actually fullscreen.
Occasionally the game will crash randomly. Make sure to save often, as there's no autosave in this game.
I tried using an XBOX ONE controller and it is detected by the game. However, when setting up the controller inputs in the settings, everything is still labeled as if you were using kb+m which makes setup a bit of a guessing game. Personally I'd stick to using kb+m as it works just fine for this game.
It runs fine, but the constant freezing is too annoying to deal with.
When Alt-tabbing out of the game, the audio will get stuck on a constant loop. It returns to normal once you tab back in though.
Everytime you reload a save you have about a 50/50 chance of the game freezing completely, and requiring you to force quit the game and restart the entire level. I tried enabling SLI in the config menu like others have suggested elsewhere, but it still happens. I deleted the h4 patch but that had no effect either. Even if you play the game without reloading saves or restarting chapters the game will sometimes freeze at the end of a level, making you redo the whole thing anyway.
It should be noted that the game runs perfectly fine besides the freezing, and I had no other problems at all with the game while playing. The highest resolution the game supports by default is 1600x1200. For higher resolutions, including 4K, you can use the h4 patch found here. I didn't try using a controller with this game.
At the end of the game's .ini file, you need to add the following two lines:
UseDirectInputMouse UseDirectInputKeyboard
Controllers work terribly for this game, but that's probably not Proton's fault. It runs fine otherwise.
/width=1920 /height=1080
While my XBOX ONE controller did technically work, even with the best controller config available in Big Picture mode, there's no way to map every function to the controller. Not only that, but looking around with the right analog stick is far too twitchy and sensitive, with no way to change it as far as I can tell. Also driving control with the left stick is awful, but that's really a game issue not a Proton one. Use kb+m for this game.
Aside from the launch options to set resolution, there's also a widescreen mod courtesy of ThirteenAG, which can be found here. Other than the controller issues, this game appears to run perfectly.
Works just fine. The launch option gamemoderun %command% helps.
I only had one crash in my 60 hour playthrough. XBOX ONE controller works fine.
There's a few minor issues with 5.13, but not enough to stop you from having fun with this game.
On a couple of occasions, the BGM just stopped and wouldn't start again, even after completing missions and going in and out of combat. All other audio was unaffected.
Shadows very occasionally had minor artefacts. Also, when there's a lot of action onscreen and you're low on health, the red "low on health" effect around the edge of the screen has a tendency to flicker, as well as occasionally obscure the whole screen for a split second.
When Alt-Tabbing out of and back into the game again, it becomes stuck on Windowed mode, and the controller inputs no longer work correctly, forcing me to use kb+m. The only way to fix this was to close and restart the game. Interestingly I had similar problems to this with Mad Max, another Avalanche-developed game.
As mentioned above, controller input no longer works properly after Alt-Tabbing. Aside from this, I used an XBOX ONE controller for my entire playthrough and it worked fine.
Noticeable slowdown when using the grappling hook on enemies. There's also some minor frame jerkiness when travelling at high speeds sometimes. Despite playing at 1080p with a GTX 1080, I did get some minor slowdown from time to time when just exploring as well.
I played for nearly 45 hours and only experienced one crash in that time.
Also, one of the side activities (One of the bomb runs, where you have to drive a vehicle into a target) got stuck in an endless loading screen, so I was unable to do it. There may be more that do this, I didn't do all of the side activities. Might be an issue for completionists.
Mostly runs fine, occasional hiccups but perfectly playable.
Stuttering and split-second freezes every now and again. Nothing major.
Always crashes at the same place making story progression impossible. Otherwise the game runs mostly fine.
gamemoderun %command%
A little bit of stuttering when first starting up the game. More noticeable on older versions of Proton.
The game would always crash at the same point, the entrance to the skyscraper in chapter 2. I tried the current version of Proton, as well as 5.13-6 which worked for someone else, and Experimental. I also tried the gamemoderun command and various other different launch options mentioned by others here, but nothing worked. This means that you cannot progress further in the story.
Aside from this the game would sometimes crash randomly anyway, but I found that the gamemoderun command helped mitigate those.
Aside from the crashes the game runs fine maxed out at 4K, although it seems to be capped at 60fps. I didn't come across any bugs or other issues besides the ones mentioned. My XBOX ONE controller worked fine.
A couple of minor issues, but still runs great.
For some reason I couldn't get the game to run at 4K. Whenever I selected my native resolution in the options (3840x2160p, 144hz) it would just revert back to default. (720p 60hz) However, I was able to select 1440p, 144hz without issue. This is hardly an "eyecandy" game so it's not really a big deal for me.
During the level "Ultron Undone", during the first phase of the boss battle ,whenever Ultron fires his laser beam you get massive slowdown. Sometimes cutscenes would stutter a lot, but not often.
I played the game to 100% completion and in that time I had no crashes or bugs that I noticed. I didn't try co-op.
You need the following launch options otherwise the audio will loop continuously: PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 %command%
The cutscenes stuttered a lot, but in a game like this, it's hardly a big deal. There was the odd hiccup in certain parts of some levels, but they were very minor.
Runs great. I completed the campaign but I didn't try multiplayer.
On DirectX 10 mode there's noticeable stuttering and uneven frame times. The game runs much smoother on DirectX 9 mode.
Apart from a couple of minor issues, the game ran great, only one random crash in 53+ hours of playing.
When Alt-Tabbing to another window and back again, about two thirds of the time the game becomes stuck in windowed mode. The only fix is to close and restart the game. Also all button prompts become stuck on kb+m, even if using a controller.
More often than not when you select exit game in the main menu it freezes instead of quitting. If that happens you can just find the game in your steam library and press stop there instead.
Works well enough on Proton 7.0-3. A couple of minor issues, but nothing game-breaking.
In a couple of the later missions, characters would sometimes repeat lines two or three times.
Occasionally in cutscenes Vito's hat would appear inside his head, and also the top of his head would be half the size of the rest of him. In one cutscene a character's eyes are looking in the wrong direction. I know this becuase I've also beaten this game on PS3. None of these are game-breaking however, and may not be Proton-related.
The game stutters a lot when PhysX is enabled, so make sure to switch it off in the settings. Disabling HBAO helped for me as well. With both of these switched off I got a rock-solid 60fps. It could probably go a lot higher with my hardware but that's as high as my monitor goes.
The game froze three times during cutscenes, forcing me to close the game via steam. Other than that I had no stability issues.
Despite what others have mentioned, I haven't had any problems with the launcher. When I try to log into my 2K account ingame however, it gets stuck on an endless loading screen, forcing me to restart. Fortunately you don't have to be logged in to play, so just skip it.
Works well enough. The 2K launcher seemed to work fine and didn't give me any issues.
One time near the beginning of the game in the bank vault, I was playing with unlimited fps and my PC shut itself down and restarted. At first I thought my CPU overheated, but after more playing with unlimited fps in a different session the CPU never went above 80C. With a 1000w power supply overcurrent shouldn't be an issue. It may have been a fluke or not even related to the game, but as a precaution I played with the 60fps cap from then on. It also helped keep fan noise down as they were working basically at full speed without the fps cap.
With a Ryzen 7 7800X3D and RTX 4080, I get around 100-110 fps with settings maxed. My XBOX ONE controller worked fine.
As long as you use an older Proton version and limit the fps in the launcher, you'll be able to play mostly without issue.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d8=n,b;msvcp71=n;msvcr71=n" gamemoderun %command%
Very rarely you'll see some textures flickering or missing.
When I set the maximum framerate in the launcher to my monitor's refresh rate (144hz), the tagging controls were very laggy and unresponsive. Lowering the max framerate back to the default 60hz seemed to fix this. Otherwise my XBOX ONE controller worked fine. Unfortunately even when using a controller all the ingame button prompts are for kb+m.
Unless you switch to an older version of Proton, the game always crashes on the opening cutscene (The one after selecting a new game, not the one that plays when the game opens). I tried using Proton Experimental like others have suggested, but the game would still crash in the same place. Even with an older version the game will still occasionally crash randomly.
On the subway ride level, when I had the maximum framerate set to 144hz, the camera would be constanly and rapidly moving back and forth, making it very hard to see what you're doing and making the level basically impossible to complete. This was fixed by changing the launcher setting back to 60hz, the default.
The launch options are required as the game won't start without them. Everything else aside, the game ran very smoothly.
At first the game wouldn't start at all, but after adding PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% as a launch option, it opened as normal.
I tried getting the Max Payne remastered 1.3 mod to work, but the game wouldn't start. I did however add the Max Payne Fix it All mod, which adds widescreen support and sound improvements, and that worked fine. Here's the page where you can find it, I highly recommend using it.
Aside from this, apart from very occasional split-second stuttering when turning the camera, the game ran perfectly smoothly, though that's to be expected for a game this old.
Ran very well for me, only a couple of issues, probably not Proton-related.
I wasn't able to set up a Rockstar Social Club account in-game, every time I got to the end and selected finish, nothing would happen, so at first I couldn't actually play. However, after setting up the account via web browser and then logging into the account in-game, it worked fine. Also, be careful when setting up an account/logging in, because if the game looses focus for any reason, the cursor disappears completely. The only way to get it back is to exit and restart.
There was occasional stuttering when entering a new area, but that's probably shader caching or something similar.
The game froze once during a cutscene, the audio continued to play. This was the only freeze or crash I had during my playthrough.
As I mentioned before, I don't think any of these issues are Proton-related, so as far as I can tell, Proton works excellently for this game.
Runs pretty much perfectly. No crashes or major issues save for some very minor graphical oddities later in the game.
Occasional flickering in the backgrounds of the last few levels of the game. Hardly noticeable. using the launch option PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command% can help reduce but not completely eliminate it.
Aside from one major crash (had to reboot pc) the game ran prefectly.
The game completely froze up at the start of the final level, I had to completely reboot my pc. After restarting Steam the game refused to even run. I restarted the pc (selecting restart in the taskbar as opposed to pressing the reset button which is what I did the first time) and the game opened and ran fine after that.
This was the only crash I ever had during my playthrough, aside from this the game ran flawlessly.
Absolutely flawless performance on Proton 5.13. Buttery smooth 1080p@60fps max settings. No bugs or other problems.
Runs great.
Slight crackling when you tab out of the game. Otherwise audio is fine.
Some crackling during cutscenes. It got quite bad on the final boss and during the credits. Adding the launch option PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 %command% helps a lot.
So far I've played the entire campaign as well as a few of the DLC levels, but I haven't tried multiplayer or co-op, or the solo survival modes, but I don't see any reason why they wouldn't work.
Runs okay, got about 30-40 fps on Ultra with DLSS, but that's about right for my hardware.
On two occasions I got heavy stuttering, which I was only able to solve by closing and relaunching the game.
You need to disable a couple of things in order to use a controller. Otherwise it's a perfect game on Proton.
The end of some lines of dialogue would cut out about half a second too early. I'm not sure this a Proton issue or just how the game is.
In order to get my XBOX ONE controller working, I had to disable both the Steam overlay and Steam input. After that the controller worked perfectly. You'll still need to use kb+m for the (pointless) launcher.
It works perfectly fine except for the fact I couldn't get my controller working.
Despite trying everything suggested here, Steam and elsewhere, I couldn't get my XBOX ONE controller to work. kb+m is useable here, but the lack of a controller in a game like this really kills it for me.
A few minor issues, but not enough to stop it an enjoyable experience with Proton.
There's a lot of texture pop-in in this game, from what I understand though it's not Proton-related. It's due to the drive that the game's installed on loading them in as you move around. I have the game installed on a SATA SSD so it wasn't that bad, but beware if you install RAGE on a hard drive.
Despite using a keyboard and mouse the entire time, all button prompts are for XBOX controllers, and there doesn't seem to be a way to change it.
Near the end of the game where you have to destroy the Authority bridge generators, there was massive slowdown to the point where I basically playing a slideshow. It happened again when you're battling the Authority vehicles outside Capital Prime. Once I got past these points the game ran alright again.
Also, when using certain weapons such as EMP grenades and dynamite crossbow bolts, there's nearly always a half-second or so before they explode when the game momentarily freezes.
I played for 20 hours. I finished the campaign and the scorchers DLC without any crashes or other major issues. The aforementioned slowdown problems were the only performance problems I had, the rest of the time the game ran absolutely flawlessly.
I tried several versions of Proton, but couldn't get past the opening video.
When starting up the game, it appears in a small window in the upper left of the screen. The MOSS logo and then the autosave warning screen appear, before it goes completely white and the intro music starts playing. Although others have said that pressing ESC or the fire button can get you past this, it didn't work for me. The music plays, stops and then just starts up again. I tried the current Proton version, (7.0-5) Proton Experimental, Proton 6.9-GE-2 and GE-Proton 7-43, none of which made any difference.
No slowdown or other problems, but given the age of the game even a potato could run it without issues. I highly recommend the Dash Faction mod, which adds widescreen support and improved graphics, among other things. You can find instructions here on how to install it on linux.
Single player campaigns work great, but I couldn't get multiplayer to work at all.
If you look directly upwards, there's a large black circle in the middle of the skybox. Not a major issue as you almost never have to look up that high.
I had 4 crashes in about 40 hours of playing. They seemed random and weren't necassarily Proton-related.
Despite trying multiple Proton versions and launch options among other things, I couldn't connect to a game, nor did any appear in matchmaking. I wasn't able to create a custom lobby without either being kicked out of multiplayer or stuck on an endless screen saying "connecting".
When you select LAN game, it'll say it's connecting for about half a second before disconnecting without so much as an error message to say why. Wrecking Crew modes work fine though.
Around 5 or so random crashes during my 10 hour playthough, but frequent checkpoints means it's not a deal-breaker.
The game would crash every 2 hours or so, seemingly at random. Autosaves in this game are quite frequent though, so I never lost much progress. More annoying than game-breaking.
Runs just fine on Proton.
A tiny bit of crackling right at the end of the game, (When you're hacking terminus) otherwise audio is fine.
You need a Protontricks workaround in order to play the campaign, but otherwise it's playable.
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=150 RADV_PERFTEST=aco PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%
You need to install either wmp9 or wmp11. They both work fine.
There's a lot of intermittent stuttering in this game, usually when going through doors or firing on enemies. It's annoying at times, but it doesn't make the game unplayable.
You need to install wmp9 or wmp11 in order to be able to play the campaign. Raid mode seems to work fine without it, though I only played for a few minutes.
As others have mentioned, you need to revert to an older version of Proton before you install the game, otherwise protontricks won't be able to install wmp. Any version from 5.0-10 and older is fine. What they haven't mentioned is that if you've already installed the game before selecting an older Proton and need to delete and reinstall, you may need to delete the game's compatdata folder manually after you uninstall the game. If it's still there when you reinstall, then the protontricks workaround won't work, even with an older version of Proton.
Works fine, no problems to report.
Unfortunately, the piece of software mentioned in this guide for automating inputs from the walkthrough doesn't work on linux. If you're aiming for 100% completion, you'll have to enter the commands manually. Or just use your brain and actually solve the puzzles.
Like others have mentioned, you need to rename one launcher and delete another, after that the game runs with only minor issues.
In a lot of the levels there seemed to be missing sfx and sometimes BGM as well, making the game seem eerily quiet at times. Also, some radio messages didn't play, although the subtitles still appeared. BGM seemed to be a little on the quiet side as well, but I'm not sure if that's a Proton issue or just how the game is.
On the Hoth level, outside the window in the circular room there are big black boxes that constantly appear and disappear. I think they're supposed to be explosions or laser beams or something.
When Alt-Tabbing back into the game, sometimes there's just a black screen, though game audio can still be heard. The only way to fix this is to close the game and restart.
In order to get a controller working, you need to edit the config.xml file. You can find it in steamapps/compatdata/32430/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Local Settings/Application Data/Aspyr/Star Wars The Force Unleashed. Once there, change "IsKBAndMouse" to FALSE. I was able to get my XBOX ONE controller working perfectly after this. You can also change the resolution here, since there's no way to do it in-game.
You need to delete SWTFU Lanucher.exe, and then rename SWTFU.exe to that, otherwise the game won't run.
Aside from occasional crackling audio, there's no issues or problems with this game on Proton.
Despite what some others have said, there's still some crackling issues as of Proton 6.3-6. It comes and goes seemingly at random. It can get distracting at times especially when there's dialogue but no music, but it never lasts for long.
I was able to get all endings and achievements with no crashes or other technical issues. There's an improvement patch you can download but I didn't try it.
This game is temperamental even on Windows, but Proton does an amazing job here. Any issues are unrelated to Proton.
For the best experience, I recommend the following launch options:
-CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32
These two are pretty self-explanatory, just set you resolution to whatever your native resolution is, don't bother with the in-game resolution options.
-intro:off
This one isn't strictly needed, but it just gets you into the game a bit quicker.
-CPUPriority:high -CPUCount:2
These are to help improve performance. SC4 was released before multi-core processors were really common, so regardless of how many cores your processor has, it won't make much of a difference to performance. While these launch options will help a little bit, expect some slowdown as your cities grow in size, especially if you have a lot of custom content installed.
Finally, expect somewhat regular crashes. This is the case on Windows as well. SC4 is an old game and doesn't always play nicely with modern hardware. Even playing just the vanilla game with the tutorial cities I've had a couple of random crashes. Just remember to save often and you'll be fine.
I didn't notice any bugs or issues playing the campaign, it may as well be a native linux game.
I didn't try multiplayer, but I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work.
After installing the game it wouldn't start. I restarted my PC and then it opened and played fine.
Very minor crackling every now and again.
On some levels there'd be z-fighting on some textures, usually on the ground. It's very minor and infrequent.
The campaign works great, my XBOX ONE controller worked as expected. I didn't try multiplayer.
On one occasion, as I was exfiltrating at the end of a mission, the mission didn't end and I had to quit the mission in the menu. I still kept all the XP that I'd earned during the mission, but it didn't count as completed. This is the only bug I ever encountered while playing, and it probably isn't Proton related.
The framerate is uneven, but the game is still enjoyable.
This game stutters a lot, and there's occasional hitches in the framerate. It can get distracting at times, but the game remains playable.
I completed all the GP cups and most of the world tour. I didn't try muliplayer, on or offline.
Works well enough with SADX Mod Installer, haven't tried vanilla but going by other reports you shouldn't have any issues.
5.9-GE-4-ST GloriousEggroll
Proton-5.9-GE-4-ST GloriousEggroll
Tried using the latest version of Proton (5.0-9) and the game would get as far as the SEGA splash screen but it then went to a black screen. Using Proton GE fixed this.
Severe screen tearing when in fullscreen mode, switching to windowed mode fixed this.
I was unable to get the lantern engine (For better the lighting used in the original Dreamcast version of the game) to work. The game would complain about a missing .dll file on startup, d3d8.dll, despite it being in the game folder already. I haven't messed around much with mods yet, but as far as I can tell the other visual mods appear to be working. As mentioned before, you may have screen tearing when set to fullscreen, even when vsync is switched on. You can just set windowed mode to your native resolution and just have the taskbar and top window bar visible. Hardly a deal breaker, at least not for me.
There's slight stuttering in places, but otherwise runs fine. XBOX ONE controller works as expected.
gamemoderun PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%
There's occasional stuttering from time to time, the launch options help but they don't completely eliminate it.
Works fine, nothing to report.
I only tried the training and arcade modes, I didn't try any kind of multiplayer.
Minor stuttering every now and again. Not too distracting.
Worked great with Proton 7.0-2. No problems at all.
During my 6 hour playthrough, I had one random crash, and I got stuck in an endless loading screen once. Other than that I had no bugs or stability issues, and they may not have been Proton-related. I didn't try co-op.
A bit of stuttering and texture pop-in doesn't stop this being an enjoyable game on Proton.
Alongside the game stuttering, there's a LOT of audio stuttering during cutscenes, but not during gameplay.
There's a lot of texture pop-in in this game, but from what I've read it may just be an issue with the game itself rather than anything to do with Proton.
A lot of stuttering during cutscenes, and sometimes during gameplay, mainly when certain enemies appear, like Laura and the Keeper.
I had three freezes during my playthrough, two of them in the same chapter in the same area.
Runs great with Proton.
On a few occasions the game would freeze up completely, and one time I had to restart my PC. I'm not sure if it's Proton related.
Works great, just follow the guides to carry over choices from Season 1.
If you want your choices from Season 1 to be carried over, you'll need to copy the Season 1 save files into the Season 2 folder (both folders are found in their respective game's compatdata folder). Others have posted links to guides to do this below.
The game randomly crashed a few times, especially during episode 3. Autosaves are fairly frequent so it's not that big a deal.
On one occasion in episode 1, the cursor and dialogue options disappeared completely, but they came back shortly afterwards. Other than that I had no other bugs or glitches.
Works fine as of 5.13, no issues to speak of.
When you press play, a blank white box will appear onscreen. The game will start up after around 10 seconds or so.
If your monitor is above 1080p you'll need to adjust your desktop resolution in order to play properly.
PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command
With resolutions above 1920x1080 (4K for example), the battle screen will be partially offscreen, making them essentially unplayable. You'll need to change your desktop resolution to 1920x1080 BEFORE starting the game. The visual novel sections don't have the same problem though.
I had one random crash in the time I was playing. Beware, this game doesn't have any autosave functions, so if you don't manually save regularly you could lose a lot of progress.
Played a bit of the Campaign and Terrorist Hunt, no problems whatsoever. May as well be native.
Works great with Proton 5.13 and ThirteenAG's widescreen mod, no major issues to report.
Very infrequent flickering from light sources, usually only noticed it once or twice per level. Very minor.
If you do use the widescreen mod, don't change ANY of the in-game settings, otherwise the resolution will revert back to what it used to be. Edit the .ini file if you want to change settings.
Even with the mod, cutscenes will still render in their original resolution.
Like others have mentioned, the launch option %command% -fastvisor fixes the visor cutscene speeds.
There's problems with screen tearing with Fullscreen and borderless windowed modes, but otherwise it runs like a native Windows game.
There's a LOT of screen tearing in this game, and there's no vsync options either. It only seems to be noticeable when fullscreen is on. When off it seems to disappear, but using borderless windowed brings it back again. This isn't a Proton issue as, from what i've read it also happens on Windows as well, but there seems to be solutions available to Windows users. It's just something to be aware of on linux.
Runs perfectly on Proton, everything maxed out. No bugs or issues whatsoever.
Used 3.16 as suggested by Steam, there's some slowdown and texture pop-in, but otherwise it works fine.
Some slowdown when there's a lot of action onscreen.
Make sure you get the All-in-one patch in order to support modern resolutions. Runs great with it.
Slight degradation in audio quality in certain situations, for example when firing certain guns the sound is noticeably "scratchy". Otherwise the audio is fine 99% of the time.
To install the All-in-one patch, download it from here. Then just install it into the game directory. When installing select the "upgrade only" option, and the installer takes care of the rest itself.
Opened the settings.ini file in the game folder and changed the RenderRes setting to 1.
If played without any tinkering, the game will look extremely blurry, even at 4K. In order to fix this, you need to change a setting in the game's settings.ini file as mentioned above. Setting supersampling to normal instead of high or ultra can help as well, but that didn't work for me on its own.
There's another minor bug where Adol and sometimes other characters can have a line down the centre of their face. I think it has something to do with the HD texture pack. It's not that noticeable though.
I played for 70 hours and had no crashes or other issues during that time. It is possible to play it without tinkering, but it'll look pretty bad while doing so. I had all graphic settings except supersampling cranked to maximum and the game runs great at 4K.
