gamemoderun mangohud %command% -skipstartup
No issues. Game works as expected. Didn't even need to set up any community fixes.

Game starts but crashes on startup
I already tried the "Startup Hang Patch" but the game still refuses to pass from the loading

Works well out of the box but requires ThirteenAG's widescreen patch to avoid "fat max" effect.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d8=n,b" MANGOHUD_CONFIG="fps_limit=60,no_display" mangohud %command%
Install Mangohud for yout distro
- Download from Thriteen AG's official repository,extract to game folder.
https://thirteenag.github.io/wfp#mp2
Go to Steam>Max Payne 2:The Fall Of Max Payne>Compatibility>General>Launch Options
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d8=n,b" MANGOHUD_CONFIG="fps_limit=60,no_display" mangohud %command%
Enjoy the game
Works well out of the box but requires ThirteenAG's widescreen patch to avoid "fat max" effect and 60 FPS lock is optional for some physx effects and ragdolls to play without issues.

Just a few times, and IDK if it's cause I can't lock it into fullscreen. Still playable reguardless
Would reconmend

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d8=n,b" %command%
Doesn't play well with i3wm, similar to Max Payne 1.
Install ThirteenAG's widescreen patch else you'll have 4:3 stretched. Compared to Max Payne 1, I didn't have any issues with my Ryzen CPU so I didn't have to install a fix for that.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d8.dll=n,b" %command% -skipstartup
Added the widescreen fix and enabled it through command. Weirdly enough, it's not widescreen without the skipintro option.

Game requires widescreen fix. With thirteenag's I just overrode d3d8.dll using protontricks and it was all good. You can try "WINEDLLOVERRIDE="d3d8.dll=n,b" %command%" in steam launch options but I had no luck.
Microstutters on 8.0-4, switching to experimental fixed this.
If you dont mind 4:3 stretched just boot it up and play.

Game runs perfectly OOTB
Game is running great and no tinkering is needed compared to Max Payne 1. Game looks a little odd on widescreen monitors.

it runs perfect out of the box, compared to Max payne 1, Max payne 2 can open Steam overlay, performance wise both run smooth like it does on windows

Save data is deleted when the game is uninstalled. No Steam Cloud support.
Added missing Actions like Quick Save & Load
With the current default proton the game freezes during startup plays great with 6-3-8 though
Runs perfectly OOTB.
Runs way better than the first Max Payne game through Proton.

Remedy's official layout is missing some controls (namely quick load after death)
Minor flashing environment
Mouse/camera input is way too fast; had to decrease speed to minimum
Odd choice to have the bullet time + dodge unbinded as trying to enter in with the keyboard doesn't register; you could bind the key to an unassigned button to change it that way.
You can get 16:9 support if you want it using thirteenag's fix
- Extract files into installation folder
- Launch with
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d8=n,b" %command%
Only 4:3 aspect ratio actually works. Other aspect ratios would stretch instead of actually naturally fit, but I'm not entirely sure if this is caused by Proton or by the game itself being ancient.
It would on occasion lag a few frames and then go back to normal
Works great
Newer versions of Proton have lighting problems. Use older versions
Works perfectly out of the box with Proton 5.13-6 or older. Newer proton versions cause reduced color depth.
Color depth degradation, causing noticeable gradient artifacts on textures
Color textures are fixed by installing https://github.com/crosire/d3d8to9 with d3dx9_43 and d3dcompiler_43 installed from protontricks. Optionally install widescreen fix (rename the dll to winmm.dll) and EAX fix. Launch with parameter:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d8=n,b;d3d9=n,b;d3dx9_43=n;d3dcompiler_43=n;dsound=n,b;winmm=n,b" %command%
Ran pretty much perfect for me.
I couldn't get the colors right, but didn't try older versions of Proton. I hope people who have the same will notice and fix it.
Color distinctions didn't seem right (on walls, floors etc.). Like it had a very low color depth.
Yes. I installed "Payne Evolution Enhanced Edition Full Final" which includes getting ultrawide support. It makes the game experience more modern, but less vanilla.
Finished game without issues
Works perfectly right out of the box. No tinkering is needed
I tested it with the widescreen patch and the mod worked too.
Works great. No problems at all.
Works without any tweaks, tested without the widescreen patch.
Everything worked. With and without Widescreen patch. Beat the game completely.
Run's out of the box

5.21-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
The fps dropped below 10 during the elevator explosion scene
Ran flawlessly. No bugs glitches or issues. Played from start to finish. Proton 5.0-9
Absolutely perfect out of the box
Max Payne 2 on Linux, very well experience.
Everything works well, Linux and steam with proton it is the best solution for someone who wants play this game. No any problems.
Run super well. No crashes, freezes, lockups whatsoever. Better than some reports coming from Win10. Vanilla no mods.
One fps drop experienced in a scene will a lot of explosions and fire. My computer isn't that great, so not assuming it's steamplay. Like in windows, widescreen support requires a community fix found online. The fix messed up the resolution of the comic book transitions and so I opt to play without it.
