Widescreen bug (some mods fix it)
That really playable, some mods can fix things like, render distance and widescreen.
Worked great, no tinkering needed. Just in game settings changes and Steam controller settings set to default gamepad.
Set Battery to 7 Watss and GPU to 500Mhz. Ran locked 40 and over 5 hour battery life
Just needed to set controls to Windows Gamepad in settings, change resolution to 1280x800 in settings and then use Steam to change controller mapping to Gamepad defaults.
Runs perfectly on ext4 filesystem. It won't run if you install it on a ntfs partition.
My last report was partially wrong. Reinstalling the program on my linux partition solved the issue. Make sure you install it there. Also if you are using a controller you have to customize the controls so it matches the modern standard controls for a open-world game.

Game installs, opens but nothing comes up and then closes automatically
The game starts but nothing comes up and then steam shows that it is closed. No errors no logs. This was in archlinux tested in all proton versions and even proton-GE of AUR

Installs fine, but launches to a blank window at a resolution/refresh rate outside the bounds of a rather good monitor.
Sadly unable to indulge myself with some Wii-era nostalgia. Launching with default, older and custom (GE) versions of Proton either fail cleanly - no window is ever created - or require a hard reset.
In the latter scenario, my monitor (1080p, up to 144hz) switches to an out-of-range error, requiring a hard reset, and, in my case at least, swapping my input between my (preferred) Displayport and HDMI ports to be able to return to a usable desktop. Wine's virtual desktop changes size but only swaps to a black window.
Unless you have a wired XBOX 360 controller, you're stuck with mouse and keyboard. Otherwise, no problems at all with this game.
I couldn't get my XBOX ONE controller to work properly with this game, even with the controller option selected in the settings menu. All that worked was the right stick moving the cursor, (as if were a mouse) the start button functioning as the back button in menus, and the right trigger being mapped to select options. Obviously I couldn't actually play ingame like this. Apparently the only controller that works with this game ootb is a wired XBOX 360 controller, but I don't have one so I can't test that with Proton.
Aside from those controller woes, I played through the entire game without any crashes, slowdown or other issues. Playing this sort of game with a mouse and keyboard took some getting used to for me after dozens of hours playing on PS2, but it was still very enjoyable. Keep in mind some music from the PS2 version is missing in this version, but that's not related to Proton. You can find the missing music files online, as well as some visual mods as well. I haven't tested the mods in Proton, but the extra music works fine. (Just drag and drop into the game folder.)
works ootb with Xbox 360 Wireless Controller
it is an amazing game, works on Linux trough Proton without problems out of box
No issues found.

Works flawlessly with and without gallium nine and zero tweaks. Resolution options are a bit weird but also work somehow. (eg. I'm at 2560x1080, and somehow get native res when I have it set to "1920x1080 32bit HD" and Widescreen on)

Just about everything works. Game runs a fantastic 60fps at max settings and all FMVs work fine, even in-game music.
However, you still can't set the distance for the shadows as to how far they can go so the game's shadows will look odd when you're driving and walking even if you were playing it on Windows.
As far as I know, trainers don't work at all. You may need the Windows version of Cheat Engine to get things like the JumpTrainer working but that's up to someone else to test out.

No issues to speak of; menus, FMV cutscenes, and in-game segments functioned flawlessly.
