WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d9=n,b" %command%
The game works fine on the latest versions of Proton, but by default the game only has a 4:3 screen mode. To get the 16:9 mode, you need to download "ThirteeenAG's Widescreen Fix" for GUN (https://github.com/ThirteenAG/WidescreenFixesPack/releases/tag/gun). To install it, you need to copy the contents of the archive to the game folder, and then in the game launch parameters in Steam you need to specify the following: "WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d9=n,b" %command%" (without quotes).
Another important point (it concerns both Linux and Windows) - in the game graphics settings, set the "Advanced Graphics" parameter to "low" and everything else to high. Yes, it sounds strange, but the textures in the game are so amazingly made that it is precisely at the low settings of this option that the game looks best (and as intended). If you set this parameter higher, the character textures become "soap mush". Just compare both modes in the game, and you will understand everything yourself. Well, in general, it's up to you.

Works great aside from some texture pop-in. Keyboard and mouse is recommended for this game.
When moving from one area of the map to the other, especially at high speed, most of the landscape and buildings can disappear for a few seconds. This probably isn't a Proton issue, but something to be aware of as it can be annoying when it happens.
The maximum resolution this game supports by default is 1600x1200. When fullscreen was selected at that resolution, this left a large black area around the rest of my 4K monitor. There's a widescreen patch by ThirteeenAG which can be found here. It won't scale to 4K (probably just 1080p) but it will make the game actually fullscreen.
Occasionally the game will crash randomly. Make sure to save often, as there's no autosave in this game.
I tried using an XBOX ONE controller and it is detected by the game. However, when setting up the controller inputs in the settings, everything is still labeled as if you were using kb+m which makes setup a bit of a guessing game. Personally I'd stick to using kb+m as it works just fine for this game.

The game's brightness is too low by default. I adjusted the in-game gamma from 19/17/19 to 30/28/30, which seemed about right.
The game is fully playable with gamepad controls (except for the control rebinding menu, which requires mouse input), but the default bindings are way off, so you'll need to take time to remap them.
The in-game control prompts will always show mouse and keyboard controls.
Vibration feedback isn't working (same as on Windows).
Even when using gamepad controls, the mouse cursor will be visible and centered on the screen during card games and pop-up notifications.
On the current default Proton (7.0-6), the game can be saved but not loaded. Works properly on Proton 6.3-8.
Even with that fixed though, save data is still deleted when the game is uninstalled. No Steam Cloud support.
Love the game, total nostalgia from my childhood and runs essentially perfectly through proton.
The steam version doesnt map controller very well, new controllers are out of the question. However my old 360 wired controller was able to be mapped to a playable configuration (although I need like one or two more buttons for it to be as ergonomic as I would like)
This takes 2 minutes on first install and is no big issue, and probably happens on windows to be honest.
I had one crash at the start of the game, maybe 5 minutes in, where i lost all data because no autosave feature to my knowledge. Concerned about this I started saving every 5 minutes or so just in case, but in the next 2.5 hours of play I havent had a crash.
One crash could just be an outlier I guess, but I can't know for sure.
Playing without "force specific compatibility tool" on steam, which i believe means its using proton 6.3-8 currently.
worked well, first try
Works OOTB. Not perfectly smooth framerate but works good. Finished the game with Proton. Use D9VK for better performance.

Runs Great out of the box. Did play 67 min strait line. Had no problem.

Game crashed the first time I tried loading it up but the second time it started up fine. It didn't seem to like my controller as the mouse was stuck going up (will probably look into a workaround later) but works fine with keyboard/mouse. I didn't try to mod it to work with widescreen or anything like that yet, just will try that also later.

Works right out of the box. No issues detected.

Just runs. Game has no native widescreen resolution support.
