Pretty much works out of the box with default Proton at the time of writing. Nothing of note.

(GOG version) Works good
Played GOG version with Proton 7.0-1.
Like native.
Finished game with no in-game issues
Mouse input is buggy in main menu
Make sure you get the All-in-one patch in order to support modern resolutions. Runs great with it.
Slight degradation in audio quality in certain situations, for example when firing certain guns the sound is noticeably "scratchy". Otherwise the audio is fine 99% of the time.
To install the All-in-one patch, download it from here. Then just install it into the game directory. When installing select the "upgrade only" option, and the installer takes care of the rest itself.
With the default Proton there is some distortion in dark places with the shadows. With Proton-6.10-GE-1 the game works perfectly.
Indistinguishable from windows
Works great right out of the box. Going to try the multiplayer patch to see if I can play this online.
just get the "XIII All-In-One Installer" click on upgrade-only and install it click yes to delete XIII.ini everything will work perfect!
install latest patch, change values in XIII.ini UseVSync = False ReduceMouseLag = False FullscreenViewportX=1920 FullscreenViewportY=1080
Run the game once to create the XIII.ini file. Followed dpanter's advice. Disable vsync with UseVSync = False. The "mouse smoothing" option is labeled ReduceMouseLag = False

edit ..../XIII - Classic/system/XIII.ini section [WinDrv.WindowsClient] to make ultrawide resolution work as you can't set proper resolution in the game settings
edit ..../XIII - Classic/system/XIII.ini section [D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice] to disable vsync & mouse smoothing
game works well in ultrawide, but the ui does not scale so it's very very small, also the cinematics are stretched to fullscreen
A bit of lag and inaccuracy in menus, apparently the problems exist in windows too though.
Solved by switching to Proton 4.2-9 and turning off Steam Overlay
