Unplayable because of really low fps / heavy stuttering
Constant stuttering and less than 5 fps all the time - even on the main menu, and even reducing graphics config to the lowest possible
Shows the message “Could not write data! Please contact Customer Support for further instructions.”
Works perfectly out of the box
Played through the entire main campaign + The Hidden Ones DLC; everything works flawlessly.
Doesn't launch, "Failed to request product key from Steam"
Runs perfectly OOTB
Everything works, including the achievements (it may seem Steam is incorrectly tracking them but it's not, just finished the game and you can get any achievements just as expected).
Frequent crashes; crouching makes the game crash; and Denuvo DRM disables grappling hook. Unplayable on Proton 5.0-1.
Frequent crashes with fullscreen
Had to tone down graphics to reduce stuttering (has worse performance than on Windows).
Crouching makes the game crash
Grappling hook is disabled because of Denuvo DRM, thus the game is literally unplayable as of now
It's borked for now
Either doesn't launch (Proton 7, Experimental, GE-Proton8-30), or launches with cropped screen (Proton 8 - can't see any of the options on the menu screen, thus can't configure or start the game)
Played the entire game; everything works perfecly, as long as the following launch parameter is used: PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command% -nointro
Doesn't even start
Game does not start with Proton 9, 8, 7, Experimental or GE-Proton9-20
Black screen with music and audio, but with broken graphics.
Works perfectly after installing the game and, then, running on terminal the command: WINEPREFIX=~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/225080/pfx winetricks dotnet40
Use media foundation workaround (z0z0z's mf-install script) and everything will work perfectly.
Videos make the game crash; fortunately, this can be fixed using media foundation workaround (https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install), and videos will then play normally. Everything else (online multiplayer included) works after the aforementioned workaround.
Freezes (black screen) even before reaching the main menu.
Freezes with both Proton 6.3-5 and Proton-6.14-GE-2, either launching with DX11 or DX10
Freezes when trying to connect to Bethesda servers
The game launches, says GPU Drivers are outdated and clicking Play makes the game freeze when trying to connect to Bethesda servers. Tested with Proton 6.3-5, Proton-6.14-GE-2, 6.13-GE-1 and 6.12-GE-1.
"Failed to allocate video memory"
It appears to only run with 470.xx drivers, so no dice with 510.xx
The game runs perfectly out of the box; played through the entire game using Steam Controller.
The game always starts windowed, but pressing F11 twice fixes it.
Barely playable; freezes often with or without the Media Foundation tweak
The game freezes all the time after only a few minutes playing (with or without the mfplat tinkering), sometimes during some fight, most times during cutscenes
Played the entire game with Proton 4.11-6, everything works perfectly, just like on Windows.
Runs perfectly if the following tweaks, suggested on github, are used on terminal (needed to use it twice, otherwise it wouldn't work): WINEPREFIX="/Your Steam Location/steamapps/compatdata/220440/pfx" winetricks dotnet40
Runs perfectly without any tweaks; also tested multiplayer and using Steam Controller, everything works like native.
Works after installing dotnet40: on the terminal, type protontricks 223730 dotnet40
3 out of 4 times, starting or loading a game leads to a completely black screen, and only the HUD and menu remain visible. It happens even when disabling reflections, bloom / HDR, antialiasing and other settings. And on the rare occasion the game actually loads the textures, using fast travel / loading another area leads to the aforementioned black textures.
Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF GloriousEggroll
It's running perfectly with Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF. With standard Proton the game gets stuck on a black screen.
WIth standard Proton, crashes right after launching
With Proton-6.5-GE-2, the game is perfectly playable, but videos won't play at all.
Won't start, shows message: "Sorry, something went wrong, for solutions please lisit: https://support.codefusion.technology/ge2rb/?e=88500010&l=english"
Runs perfectly OOTB; played online multiplayer using Steam Controller and everything works.
With "Very High" graphics, I had to set resolution to 1080p instead of 1440p, in order not to have occasional stuttering; on 1080p it's Platinum rating.
Works perfectly when using PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%
Won't start. Changing the prefix to WinXP makes the launcher run, but clicking "Start" makes the game lock up at the first seconds.
Runs perfectly OOTB. Played with 2 Steam Controllers in local multiplayer.
Works perfectly OOTB. Played through the entire game with 2 Steam Controllers in local multiplayer.
I'm currently having to play it on Windows because of the serious performance issues when running with Proton
Really bad performance (even when using Proton Experimental or GE). On Windows: 1440p at stable fps with Max graphics settings; on Linux with Proton: persistent stuttering and slowness on 1080p on Medium graphics settings.
Movies won't play on standard Proton
Unplayable: without "%command% -dx11" the game won't open, and with these parameters, the game launches and runs with low fps (5 or less)
%command% -dx11
Unplayable for now, and it's the same with standard Proton, GE-Proton and Proton Hotfix
Barely playable. Really bad performance with Proton and audio / dialogues always out of sync. Currently, it runs a lot better on Windows.
Audio is always out of sync during cutscenes
25-30 fps on Medium settings (on Windows, it runs at 60 fps with High settings)
Does not work. The intro videos play, but as soon as the main menu shows up, the following error pops up and the game crashes: "(Render) An invalid floating point camera matrix was passed to the D3D driver!"
Still getting D3D driver error, even following the tweaks suggested by the last user
Still getting "(Render) An invalid floating point camera matrix was passed to the D3D driver!" error, even after disabling Esync, forcing D9VK, and using winetricks for suggested tweaks (vcrun6, vcrun6sp6 and msvcrt). Also, Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF didn't help at all with this game, with or without the tweaks.
Still borked
Crashes before the main menu. It happens with Proton (up to 5.13-5), and Proton-GE (up to 6.0-GE-1).
Mostly works (graphics, sounds and music, keyboard controls), but higher resolution is flawed; mouse sometimes stops working inside the config menus; and the biggest problem is that, after quitting the game the first time, the game won't allow me to resume the game / open saved games, or even save new games (and this game is over 10 hours long).
Still almost unplayable, even with D9VK. The biggest problem: it's stil impossible to open saved games after playing and leaving the game the first time, and that makes finishing the game highly unlikely because of the duration (over 10 hours). Besides, changing the resolution doesn't scale like it should, leaving part of the menu icons on the bottom of the screen "unseen"; and most times, the "settings" window opens somewhere the mouse can't reach. It's NOT anything higher than a bronze rating.
Has frequent slowdowns / framerate drops. Still playable though.
Proton-6.21-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Proton-6.21-GE-2
Really bad performance, with dips to 26-32 fps even after reducing graphics options; on Windows it runs fullspeed with maxed out graphics
The game now runs with Proton 4.11-1 and the performance is like native; but it always runs windowed whatever resolution is chosen, even if "windowed" isn't checked.
Almost everything works - but not saving at all is a relevant issue and makes progression impossible in the game
Attempting to change to fullscreen crashes the game
The game doesn't save, so the game's essentially unplayable as of now
Works perfectly if the following command is used on the terminal TWICE (yes, use it once on the terminal, wait for it to end, and then use it again): WINEPREFIX="/Your Steam Location/steamapps/compatdata/261110/pfx" winetricks dotnet40
Runs flawlessly. Tested with Steam Controller and everything worked just as expected.
Still borked on Proton 5.0-1. (black screen and sound, and nothing else)
Videos don't play, but everything else is working OOTB now
Videos still won't play (only subtitles seen and audio heard)
Since cloud saving has never worked on this game, not even on Windows, there's no cloud saving with Proton as well.
The first 3 stages work perfectly and the performance is great, but as soon as I finish the 3rd stage the game will freeze. Tried using Wine D3D, disabling Esync, changing graphics configuration and resolution, and the game will still freeze at the same point. Thus, it's unplayable as of now.
It's still borked: the game doesn't go past level 3 (it freezes right after completing said level).
Hangs on the loading screen, even before reaching the menu
Doesn't work with Proton 5.0-7 or the 4.x branch; using the Vulkan beta didn't make any difference. Proton-GE also didn't work.
Too many crashes, sometimes after less than 5 minutes in game
Performance is far worse than on Windows, with even more stuttering in the Abbey.
Crashes all the time, even more than on Windows; a few cutscenes (e.g.: 2 of the heroes + 1 NPC going into Limbo) always makes the game crash with Proton, but not on Windows.
There's crashes on Windows, but a lot more on Linux: with Proton, there was no way to progress after certain missions (had to play on Windows); altering graphics settings doesn't change crash frequency.
Last video after the final boss crashes the game; everything before that works OOTB. Online multiplayer doesn't work even on Windows.
The game crashes on the last video after beating the final boss, meaning you can't unlock the last secret character or Hard mode.
It's now working perfectly OOTB
Even the ending videos play as they should without crashes, meaning it's now possible to finish the game and unlock the last secret charater + Hard mode. Excelsior!
Ran perfectly out of the box. Online multiplayer doesn't work even on Windows.
EA app launches, but game doesn't
EA app says there's an error and doesn't allow the game to be launched. Also tried Proton Experimental, Proton 7 / 8 / 9 and GE-Proton9-2: some of these versions can't even open EA app, and the ones that open won't launch the game.
Flawless. Tested both vanilla game and Kung Fu 3.0 mod, everything works perfectly.
Resolution was weird, so it was needed to edit the file "render.cfg" in "steamapps/compatdata/356190/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Local Settings/Application Data/WB Games/Shadow of War" and change the fields "ScreenHeight16by9" and "ScreenWidth16by9". After this tweak, everything ran just as expected.
Bad performance and frequent crashes
On Windows, it runs at 60 fps with maxed out graphics; with Proton, the game runs at 30 fps or less with graphics on High, and even tweaking the options it seldom reaches 55-60 fps
The game's crashing with "ERR12" error message after 1 or 2 hours
With all the crashes and frequent desync in every online match, I can't recommend running this game with Proton
Proton-6.18-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Proton-6.18-GE-2
Fullscreen turns the screen completely black; had to use Borderless
Consistently crashes after less than 15 minutes playing; couldn't finish even one Tower
Proton-6.9-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Story mode audio is still bugged (the audio falls out of sync and starts crackling after 3 or 4 story mode fights)
Almost everything works (videos included), but you won't be able to shoot enemies with mouse + keyboard (controller needed)
__GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_SKIP_CLEANUP=1 gamemoderun %command%
You can't shoot when using mouse, but you can if using controllers
Doesn't even reach the main menu with Proton 6-3.6
Stuck in a black screen. No audio, no video, no game.
Runs perfectly OOTB. Played through the entire game with Steam Controller.
Videos don't play and trying to configure mouse / keyboard / controller crashes the game. Everything else (gameplay, music, etc.) works perfectly.
Borked. Installing Media Foundation didn't help.
Installing Media Foundation only allowed the game to get to the screen before the first video ("Now loading"), then everything freezes and only the music is heard.
It's borked: shows error message "Can't set viewport" at launch and closes the game when you click "Ok".
Doesn't even launch with Proton 8.0-3 or Experimental
No problems running the game on Windows, but on Linux it just doesn't work
If not for the major occasional stuttering and a few crashes, it would be a perfect OOTB experience
Needs Media Foundation workaround to show the character on title screen.
Sometimes (usually when entering the open world map of Earth) the game will slow down to a crawl, running at 10 or less frames per second. When it happens, quitting the game and launching it again is the only way to solve it.
I've had a few crashes on the last days (both before and after the new DLC being released).
It's now running perfectly with Proton 4.2-7. Everything works just as expected.
Must change Video Driver, on the Options menu, to Direct3d, then garphics and performance work perfectly - but sound still crackles (game is still playable though).
Unplayable; after pressing Esc / Start button ingame, there's constant heavy stuttering
Needed Alt + Tab in order to detect M+K or Steam Controller.
Starts ok, but there's heavy stuttering after pressing Esc / Start button ingame the first time; the game turns essentially unplayable (less than 10 fps all the time).
The constant heavy stuttering seems not to be shader cache related, because before pressing Esc everything was running as expected.
Borked. Black screen that crashes right after trying to launch the game.
Tried Proton 8.0-5, 9.0-beta, Experimental, Hotfix and GE-Proton9-1, and the result's always the same: black screen that crases imediately.
Playable (I've managed to play the entire game with Proton), but there's frequent crashes
Sometimes there's some fps drops and stuttering (not a major issue)
With recent Proton versions, the game crashes after a few minutes playing; tested it on several in-game areas and it doesn't make any difference, there will be crashes often.
To stop the game from crashing every few minutes, use launch option PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 %command%
On some areas there's fps drops and slight stuttering for a few seconds (not a major issue)
Without enabling Force Large Adress Aware, the game crashed often. After enabling it, it hasn't crashed once in more than 3 hours playing it.
Needs Esync disabled for the music to play as expected. A few invisible textures here and there, but everything else works just fine.
Played through the entire game (33 hrs) and it ran perfectly OOTB. Played with Steam Controller.
Worked on previous Proton versions (I previously tested it on Mint 19.1). Now the game freezes (black screen) when clicking in "Options", or when entering a mission. Tried using Proton 4.11-1, 4.2-9 and 3.16-9, and also using Disable Esync e Use Wine D3D, and it was the same with all of them.
It's now working flawlessly (I'm the one who previously reported it as borked, but everything's working perfectly now).
Flawless
Everything works as it should. Played local coop (2 players) for 6 hours straight.
Like others have said, only the text and UI elements are visible and there's no backgrounds.
With Proton 3.16-6, it was needed to change the Wine prefix to WinXP in order to start the game. The game crashes when switching to fullscreen mode, but everything else works perfectly.
Had to manually create the folders My Documents/My Games inside steamapps/compatdata/22330/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/; after that, everything is working like a charm. Playing with graphics maxed out at 1440p.
Runs perfectly out of the box; tried mods and SKSE, and everything worked just as expected.
Works out of the box with great performance. Music, voice and sounds are working just as expected.
Too much stuttering makes it impossible to play comfortably
There's frequently an insane amount of stuttering the first time in every single stage; it makes the game almost unplayable
Flawless; played the first 2 hours on Windows, and the following 80+ hours with Proton. Runs like native. Steam controller also works OOTB.
Extremely stuttery with standard Proton, makes singleplayer and multiplayer unplayable
Literally unplayable because of constant lag / stutter. On Windows, I'm getting constant 60 fps at 1440p with High graphics, but with Proton 5.0 it's always under 40 fps and laggy even with low graphics / most options disabled.
With standard Proton, changing graphics settings or Origin folder writing permission doesn't help at all with the lag / stutters. And the game won't even launch when using Proton-5.9-GE-5-ST or Proton-5.11-GE-3-MF.
With Proton 5.0-6, still freezes when trying to get in the main menu
It works great offline (singleplayer), but doesn't work online because the game can't access Ubisoft servers.
Crashes all the time (even on Proton 5.0-8) and online mode doesn't work
Crashes after less than 20 minutes
Online mode doesn't work with Proton, thus no coop or Vs mission can be completed (tested it on Windows right now and online works on Windows to this very day)
It's borked, folks.
Crashes after 20-25 minutes. It's borked.
Barely playable: even with Proton Experimental (tested January 4th, 2022) it still crashes every 17-25 minutes.
Still crashing after 17-25 minutes with either Proton Experimental or 6.3-8. No version of Proton seems to avoid crashes so far.
Changing resolution twice and restarting the game solved it
Native version has lots of issues, graphical or otherwise (specially at the endgame); use Proton-GE and have fun
Crashes too frequently
After the first mission the game frequently crashes after a few minutes, to the point of being unplayable.
Disabling Uplay overlay (inside Uplay itself) is enough to get the game running perfectly. Wasn't able to test online multiplayer (no matches found, don't know if it would be the same on Windows).
With Proton 3.16-7, only needs to disable Uplay overlay (inside Uplay itself) and the game will run perfectly.
Gets stuck with a black screen and loading icon
The game gets stuck on the loading screen when using Proton 5.0-9, Proton-5.9-GE-3-ST, Proton-5.11-GE-3-MF or Proton-5.11-GE-1-MF.
Still doesn't work at all
Gets stuck on the loading screen with Proton-5.9-GE-8-ST, Proton-5.21-GE-1, or even with standard Proton 5.0-9 ou 5.13-4
Doesn't work with any Proton version up to 6.3-7: always gets stuck at loading screen. It's unplayable.
Played until I finished the game, everything works perfectly. Vsync on caused some occasional framerate drop, but with VSync off performance was exactly as expected.
Online multiplayer works perfectly, and Steam Controller works like a charm. Everything seems to be working out of the box.
Used to work until about a month ago, now it doesn't launch anymore
After choosing either "Launch with Vulkan" or "with DX12", there's a black screen and the game crashes.
