Seems issues around video playback have been resolved by now. I prefer resolution to other graphics settings, so 100% render scale and low settings gives a reasonably solid 45fps.

Working as intended on linux no problems here.
Another greate game that runs on linux.

As soon as a mission started, it would instantly freeze and crash
Apparently this is due to the nvidia 560 or later drivers, no matter what settings I change (DLSS or no DLSS, 120 fps, 60 fps), or proton version I use (7.0, GE, Experimental, ...). It would still crash.
IT WORKS IF:
- I revert to the nvidia 550 drivers (you can get every component of the 550 drivers in the arch linux archives, and add them to the
IgnorePkg
in/etc/pacman.conf
) - Use the LTS kernel
- Use proton experimental
I've had a ton of issues in many different games since ugrading nvidia drivers to 560, so I'm gonna stay on 550, and maybe check out 570 when it comes out

Tried with NVIDIA 560 drivers and the game would freeze after a few minutes. It runs fine with NVIDIA 550 drivers
Minor stuttering and FPS drops during prerendered video.

Works out of the box with slight performance dips compared to windows
Occasional frame drops in scenes with a lot of particle effects.
Game runs a little slower than on windows -- occasional 10-20fps drops can happen in certain stages where they were not in windows. Did not experience any issues with cinematic movies both in the base game and DLC.

intro video is bugged, ive seen a fix for other games but did not care for it
you can lock it to 30FPS but the game is better on 60

Once the Controller turns itself off it doesn't come back in-game, but works in the overlay
Crashes after about an hour on Proton 9.0-2, GE-Proton9-13 and Experimental (I think it's nvidia 560 driver)
120fps even more unstable 60 works, turned off dlss
At 120fps I got frequent crashes. With 60fps, completely stable.

Works very well out of the box without tweaks
Didn't try active multiplayer but passive stuff (e.g. summons) work fine
Everything over 60 fps crashes the game after a while

GPU crash after spending a few seconds in the menu
Issue coud be RDNA3 specific because I haven't seen other RDNA3 reports.
Shortly after starting the game, the system freezes and the screen flickers to black. After that, sometimes the game simply crashes, sometimes the entire screen stops updating (but other applications still seem to be running, e.g. sound is still playing from a music player in the background). Rebooting is required to restore the system to a usable state.

Works great out of the box
DLSS works without changing launch options

Installed GE-Proton to get all the videos to play, Nioh 2 runs very smoothly on Linux, no fps drops, amazing experience.
PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_SKIP_CLEANUP=1 %command%
Without installing GE-Proton the some of the tutorial videos and some of the cutscenes don't play, but apart from that it plays flawlessly on Linux.
Works perfectly fine
gamemoderun %command%
After killing the first boss my 21:9 screen resolution got squished into 16:9, trying to correct it crashed the game. As of right now it only happened once.

GAme installs and runs without any issues on latest Proton
This is an update on my previous report. With a new, clean prefix (/compatdata/1325200/pfx) all of the videos play correctly, including the first boss in the Tendu's Disciple DLC.
The video playback issue I reported previously was due to the installation of dotnet48 in the game prefix. I used this to allow WeMod to run - but having it present caused the video playback issue.
I was not able to determine what in dotnet48 caused the video playback issues. If you wish to use WeMod (or similar mod engine) with the game, I fund a workaround for the Tendu's Disciple boss fight : Progress up to the rest before the boss with WeMod. After saving, delete the prefix, and start the game - which creates a clean prefix. Proceed until after the boss cutscene. If you die after that, the game does not replay the boss video, so you can re-install WeMod and proceed to finish the game.

I had to go into the controller settings menu to get the correct button mapping for my Stadia controller. I guess I'm lucky that there was one mapping that matched xbox controller buttons (dafault was for Nintendo I think)
Videos. Whether they play is hit or miss. The ones that do not play ever are when I end a mission, and am possessed by someones spirit. Also, no tutorial video will play. Otherwise - hit or miss, but mostly the game is playable so far without the cut scense, since you can go and read a summary in the hut menu.
The main issue here is video playback. Other reports mention it as well. Given it is probably a codec/software issue - It would be nice if we could work out what is needed to make the videos play (aside, I've even seen this mentioned on Windows forums).

Absolutely no issues and runs on 120 fps with no slow downs at all. I did use DLSS on quality mode but even with that the game doesn't slow down one bit. Surprised controller support worked straight out of the box too.

On previous Proton versions the only workaround to avoid frequent crashing was disabling movie playback, which was a subpar experience no matter how you put it. Luckily things are different now. I've played for hours without a single crash, or any noticeable performance issues.
Only thing I can point out is that when browsing through the skill menu, the game will hitch ever so slightly before it actually plays the skill video, but it's entirely neglible.

The game now runs without any issues since proton 8.0. Crashes are no longer present after long sessions or visiting the skill menus.
mangohud gamemoderun ENABLE_VKBASALT=1 %command%
The game does not support 3840x1600 (only 3440x1440 and 2560x1080), so I had to mod that in.
I've had no issues while playing online with my friends.
The game doesnt have the prettiest of visuals, so I recommend using vkbasalt in order to clean up the picture.
The game works out of the box
The game just works in multiplayer
The game works very well and gives a locked 60fps at 4k.
Almost everything works (videos included), but you won't be able to shoot enemies with mouse + keyboard (controller needed)
__GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_SKIP_CLEANUP=1 gamemoderun %command%
You can't shoot when using mouse, but you can if using controllers

ProtonGE seems to be mandatory to get the video cutscenes working. These videos are also used in tutorial screens and skill upgrade menus to show gameplay clips of related gameplay mechanics and skills, so I'd say they're essential like the tutorial text itself. I experienced no crashing or stuttering after about 2.5 hours of gameplay.
works flawlessly even movies and cutscenes
Good game, subpar multiplayer experience due to crashing, playable single player but be aware of crashes when visiting menus
Later parts of the game, near the end and DLC, FPS can tank from 50 down to 30 or 29. Be wary you may need to turn down some settings for it to be playable in those areas. Otherwise, most of the game is perfectly fine.
Guaranteed crash when playing for 40min - 1 hour mark, every single time. The crash seems to happen later the less frequent you visit menus with videos (such as skills / cutscenes).
If you are playing coop, expedition modes in Nioh does not save until you finish the mission, which could take upwards of 30 min - 1 hr each. If you crash, all the progress will be lost, pretty frustrating. You are forced to speed run missions.
Most areas I can reach 50 - 60 FPS, with Texture & Effects High, Rendering Scale 60%, and keeping all other settings low with no changes to the steam settings. Like mentioned above, later areas can see massive FPS dips. Multiplayer is good, until it crashes. Single player crashes too but autosaves during mission so it is not nearly as bad.
__GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_SKIP_CLEANUP=1 gamemoderun %command%
game is smooth after using proton experimental. although movies dont work
In menu movies will cause a crash
While a pain, if you remove the skill movies, the story cutscenes don't cause any problem; vs removing the entire folder.
Approx. one per hour with pre-rendered cutscenes enabled
Not able to connect at all
You can either play with pre-rendered cutscenes enabled or disabled. With them enabled, the game will crash roughly once every hour. The game only saves when you rest at a shrine, so this can result in lost progress.
To fix this, go to the game's local files and rename the 'movies' folder. The game will then be perfectly stable.
One exception is the first mission of the first DLC. You must enable movies (rename the folder back to what it was) before entering the final boss of the mission, or you will be softlocked.
So:
- Rename the movies folder to disable prerendered cutscenes and make the game stable
- Watch cutscenes online, if you prefer
- Re-enable them before the final boss of the first DLC mission
This way you are really only missing out on the short videos the game uses to demonstrate skills.
However, you can always re-enable movies for a little while if there's something in particular you want to see. The game doesn't crash instantly, it takes a while (likely a gradual memory corruption issue).
__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __VK_LAYER_NV_optimus=NVIDIA_only __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia
Game completely bricks on focus loss.
Switch Pro Controller. Eventually got it working perfectly.
Crashes probably about every hour or so. Game has autosave so it's not unplayable.
Some connectivity problems, some lag, nothing too horrible.
game is playable but the crashes can lead to some lost progress if you haven't reached a save point
mangohud %command%
crashes every few hours, seems to be related to cutscenes and skill demo videos, hiding the movies folder by renaming it to .movies/
does not seem to help though
The very first DLC campaign "A Song to Calm the Storm" can't be finished as there's an obligatory cutscene before the final boss battle that ends up locking the game due to unimplemented video decoder.
Although the main game is playable, a lot of the context is lost due to missing cutscenes. After the main part, cutscene support is required to play through the DLC campaigns as otherwise the game softlocks just before the DLC boss battle.
Occasional crashes when tabbed out for too long
Great game from for the Steam Deck. Enjoyable with minor issues due to fps drops and small text
Some small text required usage of zoom tool
Some fps drops
You can easily increase the recommended graphic settings and still play at 60 fps. The only problem I noticed so far is that frames drop to 10-15 fps during the Yokai tutorial.
To fix the menu instability, disable movies. Otherwise game runs great with these settings
change movie to .movie
Movies (.wmv) will cause menu instability
In order to get this game running at 120hz semelessly - use the following commands I used:
PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 %command% .
wmv's are probably the root cause of the menu instability that lead to sudden crashing, especially when browsing and changing skills which can be extremely annoying. To fix this, go to the local files of the game and disable movies by change the name of the folder from "movies" to ".movies". You don't have to delete them, just put a period next to movies so that Linux can hide the folder from the game. This seems to fix the crashing problem. With these tweets in mind, the game runs exceptionally well.
Aside from cutscene issues, the game has run perfectly for me. Consitering that Nioh 1 cutscenes don't work at all, its a nice improvement.
gamemoderun %command%
Gameplay has been fine. Video cutscenes appeared to stutter slightly; in "Learn Skills" menu, there is a bit of stutter when selecting different skills for new video to load in.
To make 120hz mode work, I had to open goverlay (mangohud config tool) and turn vulkan vsync off. Otherwise my game would be stuck at 60hz.
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 mangohud gamemoderun %command%
Full Nioh 2 co-op from the map and work perfect! Who knew this game had such great co-op?
I haven't had any issues, but the 60 FPS cap during borderless is a bummer. Something to do with the way the game is rendered. In any case, the game works perfect so far (12H). Loving the online co-op with my friend who uses Windows.
