5.8-GE-2-MF
You need a Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF build in order to be able to watch the cutscenes.
Works great out of the box, but I'll probably have to lower the settings to get stable FPS.
I think the FPS were a bit low considered my hardware (~25-26 FPS).
Refresh rate: 40 Hz.
When saving the game, you have to manually invoke the Steam Deck keyboard in order to enter the name.
Works pretty well, although the performance is not perfect.
Some slight FPS drops here and there.
Works great out of the box. I was able to play it in 4K on Linux with only some occasional FPS drops during cutscenes.
Runs pretty well.
Don't turn on MSAA. It causes a lot of glitches.
Has some (unfrequent) FPS drops even on lLw settings, although the game normally runs well even on Ultra High.
Steam shows a "Failed to request product key from Steam" message. and the game doesn't start.
The game seems to run perfectly after the following trick to prevent Uplay client from updating (you have to run the game once in order to create the WINE prefix): 1) Go to (your_steam_library_folder)/steamapps/compatdata/354380/pfx/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Ubisoft/Ubisoft Game Launcher. 2) Open version.txt file and note the version number. 3) Download this Uplay version: https://web.archive.org/web/20180927054350/http://ubi.li/4vxt9. 4) Using winetricks or protontricks, uninstall Uplay and then install the version you've just downloaded ("Select the default wineprefix" > "Run uninstaller"). 5) Run the game.
Runs very well without any tweaks. I recommend turning off the Uplay overlay to improve the performance.
Runs pretty well after launching the Uplay client in offline mode. I had pretty stable ~60 FPS on Ultra High without using MXAA. I give it just a silver rating because for some gamers the achievement are very important, and you can't get them, if you play offline.
Since Proton 4.11 the game finally runs perfectly and doesn't crash on start even without using the Uplay in the offline mode.
Runs really well. I give it a gold rating instead of platinum because turning on MSAA provokes graphical glitches. Still, the game looks great ven without MSAA.
Doesn't run because of the Uplay error. As it's impossible to play it without Uplay, it's currently unplayable.
Unplayable because the Uplay client is unable to connect to the server
The game runs pretty much perfectly at 60 fps after the following trick to prevent Uplay client from updating (you have to run the game once in order to create the WINE prefix):
- Go to (your_steam_library_folder)/steamapps/compatdata/354380/pfx/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Ubisoft/Ubisoft Game Launcher.
- Open version.txt file and note the version number.
- Download this Uplay version: https://web.archive.org/web/20180927054350/http://ubi.li/4vxt9.
- Using winetricks or protontricks, uninstall Uplay and then install the version you've just downloaded ("Select the default wineprefix" > "Run uninstaller").
- Run the game. I give this one only a bronze rating, because once you've exited the game, you can't run it again (the game window opens, you hear an intro sound for a couple of seconds, then the window closes). The solution is to reinstall Uplay once more and then you can run the game.
The game runs with DXVK but has many graphics issues (e.g. the models of the characters aren't seen). But after adding "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1" to the launch options those issues are gone. The performance is quite good (~30 fps on my non-gaming laptop), and I haven't run into any problems so far.
Finally the game runs perfectly out of the box. No issues whatsoever.
Works out of the box.
You may consider disabling Uplay overlay because its notifications tend to get "stuck" over the game window.
Works perfectly. Disabling Uplay overlay may improve the performance, but no other tweaks are needed.
The game can't run without the Uplay client. The Uplay client shows the "service unavailable" error. Therefore the game is unplayable.
Runs well, but by default doesn't stretch to occupy all the height of the screen in the full screen mode. You can either play in the window mode or use protontricks/winetricks to emulate a virtual desktop with your screen's resolution.
Set refresh rate to 40 Hz. Keep in mind, though, that even after doing this the power consumption of this game is still very high.
This game has a pretty high power consumption, so it's usually better to play connected to the power source. If not, be aware that you won't get a lot of battery life.
protontricks 35140 mdx d3dx9 d3dcompiler_43 win10
Sometimes crashes during cutscenes.
protontricks 35140 mdx d3dx9 d3dcompiler_43 win10
By default Steam launches it with Proton, but the Proton version isn't able to play the movies. Setting it to Steam Linux Runtime solves this problem.
Runs well except for some audio problems. It seems there are several methods to get rid of them. I used this one: https://www.gog.com/forum/beyond_good_and_evil/cutscene_audiovideo_sync_fix. The downside of this is that your CPU will be working at 100% all the time.
Runs really well, but has some audio looping issues. In order to fix those you need to download this version of dsound library: http://www.mediafire.com/download/yvdxcw7663v1k67/dsound.dll and copy it into Windows/system32 folder (replace the one that comes by default). Then use winetricks or protontricks to configure your Steam prefix to use the native version of the library. E.g.: protontricks 15130 winecfg Libraries -> Add "dsound" -> Set it to "native, builtin" The audio looping problem should be gone, and you should be able to enjoy the game.
Disabling Esync helps with the blurry textures problem.
Blurry textures by default. Disabling Esync fixes this problem.
Disabling Esync fixes the textures.
The texture quality is very low with Esync enabled.
Works out of the box with the latest Proton version
Some crackling now and then. But it probably has to do with the fact that my laptop's CPU isn't potent enough.
I didn't have any issues when playing with one other person. On the other hand, when playing with two other people I experienced some serious lags.
If you just want to play solo or with another person with a Linux machine, I recommend you stick to the native version. I believe the connectivity issues I experienced in co-op with 3+ players is probably the server's fault and not the game's. If, on the other hand, you want to play with other people online or want to ahve the latest DLC, you can switch to Proton. It also works fine. Although, the Prootn version showed less FPS than the native version in my case.
Back grip buttons for running and melee.
Doesn't run very well on default settings. Changing to DirectX 11 and capping to 30 FPS makes the experience much smoother.
Crashes quite frequently when using DirectX 12.
I play online co-op with my wife on the same network. It is mostly stable, though sometimes I get disconnected from the host. I haven't tried hosting the game, because our Linux gaming PC has more power, and it makes more sense for it to host the game.
It is imperative to change the DirectX version to 11. Otherwise the game crashes often. After the first launch the game defautls to DirectX 12. Exit the game. Launch the game and set the DirectX version to 11. Restart the game again for the change to apply. I also recommend capping FPS to 30 in the game settings. I couldn't achieve 60 FPS even with the Very Low profile. You can get about 45 FPS. And capped 30 FPS feels a lot smoother. If you cap the game to 30 FPS, you can play comfortably on Medium settings. I also turn on FSR in the Steam Deck menu as I play this game with an external monitor. Setting FSR sharpness to 4 it looks very nice on a 1080p monitor, and the text remains readable.
It's just a matter of personal preference, but I always set up the grip buttons for melee and running. I also tend to fine tune the right trackpad, because I use it for aiming (I hate aiming with a joystick and I find gyro a bit complicated to use).
I set the game to 40 Hz, which is perfect for playing both solo and in co-op.
To be fair, I didn't try matchmaking, because I always play with my wife and friends, but, other than that, it is very smooth.
There is a small issue of the game displaying keyboard keys instead of controller buttons. It's not related to the Steam Deck, because it also happens on desktop PC. You can change this in one of the game's .ini files: https://borderlands.fandom.com/wiki/Borderlands_PC_Tweaks#Change_PC_icons_to_Xbox_/_PS_icons.
Controller not being detected by the game would be a serious problem for most of the gamers.
Created a custom layout based on Keyboard + Mouse (the game doesn't detect gamepads when using Steam Linux Runtime).
I created my own layout based on Keyboard (WASD) and Mouse. You can simply take my layout and tweak it to your liking.
Refresh Rate: 40 Hz.
Controller isn't detected by default. Using the Keyboard (WASD) and Mouse layout or the layout I created fixes this problem.
Played in co-op with my wife for several hours. Not a single problem.
Creating your own layout takes 5-15 minutes, but I think most of the "typical" gamers wouldn't bother. If you'd like to play this game (without Proton) I recommend selecting my layout as it has everything mapped, and then changing it to your liking.
I don't know why Steam uses Proton by default for this game. I remember playing the native Linux version years ago without a single problem, and it still works perfectly on Steam Deck. To be fair, I haven't tried the multiplayer part of Brutal Legend (never liked it), so maybe they chose Proton for better multiplayer compatibility. If you're only interested in the story, you can safely switch to Steam Linux Runtime.
Runs perfectly out of the box
The only issue this game has is that the opening video cannot be played. If you still want to watch it, you can do so by going to the mov folder inside the main folder of the game. There are three files, but it's the same opening video in different formats.
You have to install Media Foundation fix from https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install in order to be able to watch the cutscenes.
Works pretty well, if you don't mind missing out on the videos.
The videos aren't shown.
I'm not sure how well it runs with Proton 6.3. I will try it later, and leave my feedback.
Lowered the game resolution to 1280x720 and put the graphics settings to Low.
I recommend lowering the graphics settings to increase both the FPS and the battery life. Control looks great even on Low, but plays a lot smoother.
Refresh rate to 40 Hz.
This game seems quite heavy for the Deck. It takes a while to load, and there are occasional FPS drops too.
While it's not as smooth as I would have liked it to be, it's still playable. Especially if you lower the settings.
Enabled "Reset PulseAudio" in Lutris System Options to avoid crackling sound.
Runs perfectly out of the box.
A native Linux build doesn't exist. Just force the use of a specific Proton version.
Works perfectly our of the box. I haven't run into any issues so far.
Works out of the box.
I expected it to run better given my hardware (I got less than 20 FPS).
I haven't run into any issues so far. I've been able to connect to the online services and synchronize the achievements.
The launcher works, but the game itself doesn't run. The launcher complains about the DirectX version.
Runs perfectly on Linux
I didn't have any problems on Manjaro, but on Ubuntu running on the same PC I had some audio crackling. It can be easily solved by using PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60.
All in all the game works very well.
I don't recommend using Alt-Tab, because the game screen may get stuck.
The intro videos can't be seen.
Runs perfectly out of the box in my case. I didn't have to use the argument mentioned in the other reports.
In order to fix mouse input lag I went to /steamapps/compatdata/38400/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Application Data/Fallout/623bfb25364f295387aa7393b50be4fa and changed ALT_MOUSE_INPUT from 0 to 1 in f1_res.ini file.
Input lag can be fixed by setting ALT_MOUSE_INPUT=1
Works perfectly after renaming falloutwHR.exe to FalloutLauncher.exe.
Works perfectly fine with 5.13-6. Doesn't work with the latest Proton version (6.3-5 at the moment).
Install Media Foundation DLL in order to be able to watch the cutscenes.
I was able to make it work well by tweaking directmusic and dsound as explained in the comment below. To get rid of the annoying change between the windowed and fullscreen mode during the movie playback I had to set my desktop resolution manually in Gothic.ini file. After that it works rather well.
Install dmusic and remove dsound in winecfg.
Go to system/Gothic.ini and set your desktop resolution (zVidResFullscreenX, zVidResFullscreenY) in order to be able to watch the videos.
Refresh rate to 40 Hz.
The text is a bit small. I suggest using the magnifier to read.
If this game had the option to change the text size, it very well could be verified.
I changed the refresh rate to 40 Hz. It's more than enough for Heaven's Vault.
It feels as if this game was made for Steam Deck. It's a smooth and bugless experience.
The game seems to run perfectly fine without any tweaks. I only played it for less than an hour, but I haven't run into any glitches so far.
Runs perfectly well out of the box. I've tested everything except multiplayer so far.
The only reason I use Proton GE is because the intro movies can't be played correctly with vanilla Proton. If you don't care about them, you can simply use Proton 7.0. The game runs perfectly fine.

Proton-6.8-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Proton-GE (https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom)
It also works with vanilla Proton, but the movies can't be played.
Runs pretty well, but some dialogues have missing voices.
Some dialogues are missing sound. I don't know, if it's a Proton-related problem, because I never played this game on Windows.
In my case using Proton offered better experience than the Linux version offered on Steam. There is actually no native Linux version. The version offered on Steam runs with WINE.
Doesn't start.
I tried installing .NET 4.7.2 as some other reports recommended, but it didn't solve the problem.
Runs fine most of the time.
For me it always crashes during the second mission.
Sadly, I couldn't test it well, because it always crashes during the second mission, but I think it's my problem as it happens with older Proton versions too.
Works perfectly out of the box
You might also be interested in Boxtron (https://github.com/dreamer/boxtron) or Roberta (https://github.com/dreamer/roberta).
As mentioned before, it is necessary to copy the dll files and disable Esync. Then the game runs, but the performance is not as smooth as expected. I only got around 30 FPS using default settings.
Works really well so far. The only issue I had was being unable to connect to Cerberus Network, but I think it's a problem with EA servers and has nothing to do with Proton.
Works perfectly out of the box with Proton 5.0.
It is no longer needed to use the PROTON_USE_D9VK option as Proton 5.0 uses D9VK by default for the supported games.
The game itself runs very well with Proton. If not for the Origin client, the experience would be flawless.
I disabled all the notifications in the Origin client. Otherwise, every time an achievement notification popped up the game window was minimized. Not critical, but pretty annoying. Especially during combat.
I recommend disabling the notifications in the Origin client. Otherwise, every time an achievement notification pops up the game window will be minimized.
6.16-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Proton-6.16-GE-1
Regular Proton is unable to play the videos making playing this game impossible.
Refresh rate to 40 Hz.
Honestly, I'm impressed by how well this game runs out-of-the-box.
Proton-6.5-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Proton-6.5-GE-2
It is a bit slow given my hardware.
The launcher works, but then the DosBox window gets stuck trying to execute SIERRAH.EXE.
Works very well without any tweaks.
The game crashed once.
Works great out of the box. I haven't tried all the games, but the ones I've tried run perfectly.
It actually uses DosBox to runs the games, so you use DosBox directly instead of Proton, if you wish.
The game starts, but it cannot detect the cable. I've tried changed the audio to ALSA, setting "Win32UltraLowLatencyMode=0" and "ExclusiveMode=0" in Rocksmith.ini, but it doesn't work.
Runs perfectly out of the box. It seems you need an EA account to access some things, but I've been able to play this game without logging in and haven't run into any problem.
Runs perfectly, if you choose the OpenGL option on launching the game. The default option is very slow and the fonts are so thick they are unreadable.
Runs perfectly. I haven't tested the online functionality yet, but the single player mode works really well.
Not only it works out of the box, but the performance seems better compared to the previous Proton versions.
Works perfectly out of the box
The performance of this game depends on the OS you use. It runs perfectly on Fedora, but it doesn't start on Kubuntu on the same laptop. It is not that surprising, though, given the fact that this game is made on Unity.
In my case it works perfectly out of the box with the latest Proton version
Runs perfectly. The only issue I have is that the game runs in the window despite setting it to full-screen. But I don't really mind.
Runs really well, but I couldn't manage to run it in fullscreen mode.
Refresh rate: 40 Hz.
I haven't tried the multiplayer part of this game.
Refresh rate to 40 Hz.
The shadows aren't being displayed correctly (you see dark squares instead of proper shadows).
Cloud saves seem to be disabled. Switching to another Proton version makes you lose your progress. Be sure to back up your save files. The path is: /steamapps/compatdata/330830/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/Telltale Games/Tales from the Borderlands.
As reported previously the game crashed in the beginning of chapter 4 of episode 1 using the Proton version suggested by Steam. That's why I changed it to 5.13, and I was able to finish the game without a problem.
While switching to an older Proton version is trivial, it can result in losing your progress unless you make a backup beforehand. Hence the current Playable rating is misguiding.
Great Morrowind experience out of the box
If you want to enjoy playing Morrowind on Linux, I recommend checking out the OpenMW project (https://openmw.org).
Works perfectly out of the box. No issues whatsoever!
The launcher window got stuck over the game window. Switching to the launcher window (Alt-Tab) and minimizing it solved the problem.
Runs flawlessly out of the box. It hangs on exit, if Dawnguard DLC is enabled. So just disable it or assign a keyboard shortcut to easily terminating the game's process (i.e. I use Ctrl+Alt+K).
Runs perfectly. As always you have to manually kill the game process after exiting the game, but it's something I've gotten so used to that I won't even lower the rating.
Just works.
I haven't tested it for some months, so I'm surprised that it seems that the game process no longer gets "stuck" after exiting the game.
Works fine, but there is no music and no voices. You have to download FAudio, build it and copy into the Proton lib64 folder in order to fix this problem. Besides the game sometimes "hangs" on exit and has to be killed. It doesn't seem to be the same bug that the original version of the game as the game window doesn't close.
Set the xaudio2_7 library to native, builtin in winecfg.
The music and the voices are missing. You have to set the xaudio2_7 library to native first. Then add PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 to the launch command in order to fix the audio crackling.
Runs pretty much flawlessly. You can't navigate the launcher with buttons, but Steam Deck has a touchscreen, so it's not a big deal. The gameplay is really smooth. My only complaint is that the default controls aren't extremely intuitive, but maye it's just because I always played this game with a mouse and a keyboard before...
Works very well in general.
Crashes when loading Secret Shop or Robot Repair.
It's a pity not all the experience work, but the ones that do perform very well and are a lot of fun. Tried with Valve Index.
I made to solve the crackling problem by restarting PulseAudio.
It doesn't even start, if you try to use the latest (5.0) version. Besides, the punctuation signs appear as squares in some (tutorial) messages. But it doesn't affect the readability much.
Works very well, but sometimes crashes.
Avoid using Alt+Tab because it breaks the shadow rendering.
Sometimes the game crashes. As other people mentioned before me, it tends to happen more often at the end of the game, normally during a battle. It can be really frustrating, when the game crashes at the moment, when you are about to finish a long and tiring boss battle.
I've played the game for several hours, and it doesn't have any issues: no glitches and no crashes.
Works really well, if you don't mind problems with the video playback.
I had the some video playback problem Zwei suffers from: the video feed is slow, but the audio is played at normal speed. This makes watching the cutscenes a weird experience.
You can play this game by using either a touchpad or a touchscreen. In both cases the experience is great.
Works pretty well. Just install the Media Foundation fix to be able to watch the cutscenes.
Runs perfectly well. Much better than the (poorly optimized) native version.
I was able to achieve stable 60 FPS in 4K instead of ~30 FPS the native version offered. Besides the native version crashed about 10 times in ~3 hours. I haven't had a single crash using Proton.
The default D3D11 version is slow and has some graphics glitches. But, if you disable D3D11 (PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 %command%), it works flawlessly.
Works perfectly after disabling D3D11 (PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 %command%).
Add "PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 %command%" to the launch options.
Works really well out of the box. I consider the fullscreen problem I had a minor one.
I had to change focus a couple of times before fullscreen worked.
As mentioned before, the game runs perfectly after disabling Esync and changing the latency of Pulse by adding "PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 %command%" to the launch options. It also works very well with Steam Controller.
Works perfectly after applying the unofficial patch. The process has to be killed manually after exiting the game.
Installed the Unofficial Patch (https://www.moddb.com/mods/vtmb-unofficial-patch) and then added "%command% -game Unofficial_Patch" to the Steam launch options.
Sometimes the game starts minimized
The game process doesn't end after exiting the game. Use "pkill Vampire.exe" to kill it. Or, even better, assign the aforementioned command to a custom keyboard shortcut.
After the latest Kullervo update the launcher crashes with Proton 7. Switching to Experimental fixes the problem for the moment.
The game runs fine. If you don't mind using winetricks/protontricks to change some settings, you will enjoy the experience.
Install xact, set Windows XP as an OS for watch_dogs.exe and set the xaudio2_7 library to native.
While there is sound in the menu, there is no sound in the game. You have to apply the tweaks I mentioned in the protontricks section to make it work.
Sometimes the coat animations are weird.
The game starts minimized every time (Alt-Tab works).
If you want to play with the controller, you should connect it and power it up BEFORE starting the game. Otherwise it doesn't get detected. Tested with Steam Controller.
After making the symlinks for libgnutls I was able to start the game, but, while there is sound in main menu, there is no sound in the game at all. I tried several tricks to make it work, but without success. Hence the bronze rating.
At first the game used to crash at the starting video, but disabling the Uplay overlay solved that issue. Other than that, works perfectly fine.
You still need to do the sound tweak, but, other than that, the game works perfectly.
Disabling Esync helps prevents (or, at least, reduce the amount of) crashes.
Crashes a lot less with Esync disabled.
I can confirm that the game works with Steam Controllerusing 3.16-7 version of Proton. Other than that, I haven't really played it much so far, but it seems to run smoothly.
I've played this game for more than an hour and didn't experience any problems. It used to have some trouble recognizing the Steam Controller in older versions of Proton, but not anymore.
Works perfectly out of the box.
There used to be a problem with music not playing in the arcade games, but it works now.
Works great out of the box.
The game's full screen mode prevents you from switching to other windows by using Alt-Tab. The Super key sometimes works, though.
protontricks 223810 cinepak directshow
Just use the mentioned protontricks command in order to be able to watch the cinematics.
Works pretty well out of the box. Enjoyable, if you don't mind the main menu flickering.
Flickering in the main menu.
Proton-6.8-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
The game screen flickers, if you start it directly, but, somehow, doesn't flicker, when you start the game via the configuration tool.
The videos don't play while using vanilla Proton. Using Proton GE kind of solves this problem. "Kind of", because as it was mentioned by one of the previous reviewers, the video stream is slower than the audio stream. You can still watch the videos, just not the way they were intended to play.
