Ignore my last report. I had to install the 32-bit nvidia drivers for my GPU with "sudo pacman -S lib32-nvidia-utils". Now the game works.
Game doesn't launch on default version. Directx8 version gives me an error saying I need to install Directx8.1 no matter what proton I use.

lavfilters, amstream
Ignore my previous report, game runs at 60hz if you leave the frame limiter at automatic
Not mandatory but hugely improves enjoyment if you install the evo voice patch: https://github.com/chyyran/skyinstaller/releases/tag/1.4.1-steamos-beta

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n, b" %command%
disabled intro + opening movie from config tool
Game only runs at 58 FPS on my Deck, set to 58 Hz refresh rate to avoid hitching
Installed Evolution voices mod (almost necessary) hence the WINEDLLOVERRIDES launch option

Игра даже не стартует

Ran on 5W.
Works great, community controller layouts are a big plus. Played with Evo mod for audio only. Standard linux instructions worked just fine on desktop mode.

Game will run just fine as is, but you need to disable VSync in launcher. I played through a game on Normal Difficulty - no issues at all.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" %command%
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" %command% is needed if you want to play with japanese voices (from EVO release) You can use this to download VO https://github.com/chyyran/skyinstaller

Works perfectly on Proton 8.0.5, SoraVoice Lite Mod also works without launch options to enable them
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" %command%
DX9 Mode does not work out of the box, graphical glitches. Switching to Proton 8.0.5 let me start DX9 Mode without issues. For SoraVoice Lite Mod for Japanese Dub Voices to work, use the launch options
Disabled vertical synchronization in the launch configuration tool, then it worked. Worked also with Proton Experimental.

No issues when run in DirectX 8 mode
Game only launches when launched in DirectX 8 mode. The game's launcher on Steam allows you to select this, so no tinkering required. No issues otherwise.

No problems after downgrading to 8.x
I found greater compatability downgrading to the 8.x version of Proton over the 9.x version, experimental, and GE.
If you would like to mod in the jp voices you can find the files here (use the torrent) with this video tutorial if needed. I did not need to use the launch option on my non steamdeck pc.

Crackling audio seems to be tied to VRR. I enabled experimental Gnome VRR, audio crackles, I disable experimental Gnome VRR, audio crackles disappear.

Weird stutter appears in the music occasionally, even if the game is otherwise running smoothly

Disable V-synch
Game only launched through configuration tool. Adjusted resolution for my PC, and disabled Vertical synch to eliminate screen tearing.

Awesome game! Works fine except for movies
Movies not working, intro can be disabled in launch menu
The game works fine except for the movies. The intro one can be disabled in the launch menu but the ending one prevents getting the final trophy! In any case, the final save can be loaded in SC to get the perks.

Install amstream, quartz, and lavfilters.
Launch using "Configuration Tool (DX8)"
Change the resolution in the Configuration Tool (DX 8) to 1280 X 800 X 32.
Also I have the auto install options enabled in the settings. I was using Wine-GE-Latest

Lowered TDP to 7 to improve battery performance a lot
Opening and ending movie, the video lags heavily behind the audio.
Outside of Opening and Ending videos, everything works fine ootb for this game

Game can be run with lower tdp to improve battery life a lot

amstrea, lavfilters (NOT the 0.7xx whatever, the regular one), quartz
Technically, it is the video that is out of sync. The video is slowed down compared to the audio. The included protontricks options FIX this problem
The game WOULD NOT START unless the either the "Configure Controller" or "DX8 Configuration" options were selected. Clicking "start game" (after I had changed the resolution for one of the options; not sure if this impacted the startup or not) started up the game properly.
After doing this once, choosing the regular startup options for the game worked just fine.
Guide to install fixes: 1:Download "Protontricks"
2: Ignore any warning about a certain directory
3: Select the game (Trails in the Sky) from the list
4: Choose the "Select the default winprefix" option
5: Choose the "Install Windows DLL" option
6: Check the following boxes: a. amstream b. quartz c. lavfilters (Just the one named that. Not the other 0.xx version)
7: Hit "OK" and wait a few minutes as nothing will show up.
8: A Windows installer will appear Go through the installer selecting your choices, or just keep the default options
9: Close any windows after the installer

Can run perfectly. BUT a typical gamer would be frustrated trying to troubleshoot intitial startup of the game and desynced video

This is a great game, that CAN run perfectly on linux, with configuration. It is crucial that the initial startup options through the configurator menus be used at first launch. It is also crucial to install the aforementioned protontricks windows dll files

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" %command%
Launched protontricks, selected the game, selected default wineprefix, installed Windows DLL. Install amstream, quartz, and lavfilters, and waited for the installations to complete
the intro video slows down in relation to the audio, leading to a desynch, but it can be fixed with protontricks
followed Koolaid Legend's instructions:
Launch protontricks, select Sky FC, select default wineprefix, install Windows DLL. Install amstream, quartz, and lavfilters
keep in mind protontricks is slow you need to wait for the configuration windows to popup

I had to originally use GE 8-6 for an issue, I believe a controller problem. Later versions may have corrected the issue, but just wanted to put the info out there that it is running great for me with GE 8-6.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" %command%
Thanks to Zeddex on the sky SC page for protonDB for giving me the idea to try this. this fixes the video and audio going out of sync for the intro video and im assuming any other videos that play in the game. Launch protontricks, select Sky FC, select default wineprefix, install Windows DLL. Install amstream, quartz, and lavfilters everything from as far as i have played runs as intended!
Needed to map the left Dpad on my PS5 DualSense controller to correspond to the left JoyStick - otherwise Dpad appeared to do nothing ingame or in menus
By default - much of the sides of the game Window appear offscreen. Had to force a resolution change to get the game to fit in the Deck's screen.
Dpad appears to be nonfunctional by default. Had to map the Dpad to be Left Joystick input to get it working.
Intro video and Logo did not play on Proton Experimental (same with 7.0-6), videos were replaced with a colored placeholder card. Likely will be the same with the ending videos too - but I am nowhere near that far in to know yet. Appears to be a regression (Valve transcoded these videos and included them in a shader update about a year ago to get them working - looks like this process is now broken.
10/10. Long battery life.

(Mostly) works out of the box, but it's worth going into the config tool to adjust some things like resolution, font size and fast forward speed. Controls are already setup for you, they will not match the in-game prompts but they're simple and easy to figure out. Using the analog to move works perfectly but making menu selections is a bit finnicky, I would highly recommend mapping the left joystick to the DPad (which otherwise does nothing) on the Steam layout for more precise menu control.
Voice patch will work no problem using the specified launch option.
Only problem I noticed is the intro video and audio are out of sync, the audio plays normally but the video is much slower, so you end up with the audio ending first then waiting for the video to catch up with no audio playing. 10 hours into the game I haven't come across any other movie sequences so not sure how much of a problem it would be, but for what it's worth, the intro movie can be disabled from the game's config menu.
Capped at 30FPS
Some issues with cutscenes where the video was very slow/delayed

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" %command%
changed trackpads- right to mouse, left to analog stick
needs a launch option to get soravoice to work, and i couldnt get fmvs to work on an old gog executable. current steam version runs flawlessly ootb and can be modded with soravoice lite and other evo mods.
Set TDP to 6 W, GPU throttled to 600, 40 hz, 40 fps. 8 hours of battery life.
This is an old game, and you can squeeze hours of gameplay just by tweaking some settings. It works perfectly ootb

Very rare.
Like other Falcom games on Deck, game can have issues when you come back from sleep mode.
Despite the Unsupported status, the game is fully playable as reported from previous players here. The game has very few issues that won't bring any trouble to your playthrought. Don't forget to run the config utility to change the resolution and to force the game resolution to native from the Deck menu as reported by Arlen (or the screen will be slightly cropped).
As for the EVO modes (voices, arts, visuals, movies and BGM), it is possible to make them work with some tweaks.
- To install them, from Desktop Mode, just drag and drop all the files needed in the Trails in the Sky folder.
- As it won't be possible to run the .bat files to install some files, just rename the files from the mod to match and override the original ones in the game folder.
- Don't forget to add the SoraVoice and SoraVoiceScripts files from GitHub to the voice folder.
- On Deck, apply the following launch options or the voices won't work : WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" %command%
Plays perfectly. Run the provided config tool to adjust the game's resolution, and you're good to go.
Very rare crackling /slight slow down; self-corrects after a few seconds, or on scene change.
Issues with getting d-pad to work correctly. Ended up editing the Steam controller config to make d-pad mimic left stick.
Runs great
slight slow downs at times
Custom touchpad radial menu; some remapped buttons
Should be rated at least "Playable". Some adjustment of the control scheme made the game more enjoyable: I added a custom trackpad radial menu. About 40 hours in and the only bugs have been some slight glitchiness occasionally when coming back from resume: sometimes the volume buttons don't work or there are some other minor oddities. This never caused any serious problems and just restarting the game fixed everything. Only noticeable game bug is a problem with Joshua's Sever craft doing no damage if in Turbo mode (which is a known issue), but I just pressed the cancel button to skip those animations instead of turboing through them.

used the EVO music mod, no problems installing it
The opening video had desync'd audio and video (minor, the audio ended ~30sec before the video) but I played through all 50 hours of the game just fine. The ending video and trailer for the sequel both played fine with synced audio so I think it's an issue with just the opening video. I alternated between playing on my Steam Deck and on my PC.
On Deck, use Game Resolution: Native. Otherwise, you may end up with a slightly cropped screen. Workaround also works when docked.
On Steam Deck, leaving "force compatibility tool" off will work. Videos play and time speed ups are fine; 6 hours in and no issues.
Specifically, though: Proton 7.0-4 definitely works. GE-PROTON7-33 does NOT work; game will not even launch.
Game did not start out of the box. Reverted to Proton 7.0-4, was able to load config. Disabled movies and set resolution to monitor native, game loaded from there with no issues.
To fix game not recognizing controller: Navigate to the game's local files (Manage > Browse Local Files). Right click on "DX9_Config.exe" > "Open with other application" > Wine Windows Program Loader. In Config, navigate to the Input tab > select controller > check "Enable gamepad" > Update. Controller should now be recognized and useable when launching through Steam.
This is fixed by opening DX9_Config.exe in Wine Windows Program Loader, selecting the controller, and enablign the gamepad. After doing so, gamepad is recognized and useable when launching through Steam.
Occasional but noticeable "rubber-banding" during cut scenes--I might just need to adjust refresh rate and frame rate.
