After installing the game let it install the EA launcher and then try to run the game. It will error. Close the game and set the compatibility to Tinker Launcher and use the One Time Install option. Download the NVIDIA PhysX EXE from NVIDIA and run it with the one time install option. Switch back to Proton 9 and run the game again. It will launch.
You will need to import your game saves from Mass Effect 1. Find the "Mass Effect" folder in:
$HOME/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/17460/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/BioWare
and copy it into:
$HOME/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/2362420/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/BioWare
Next switch the compatibility to Tinker Launcher and use the 1 time install and run the "MassEffect2Config.exe" found in:
$HOME/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Mass Effect 2 (2010) Edition/Binaries
Use the config app to copy the Mass Effect saves from:
C:\users\steamuser\My Documents\BioWare\Mass Effect
Close the app, switch back to Proton 9 and run the game. You should now see the option to import your old save from the "New Game" menu.
No Launch options are required as this will run out of the box. I only added these launch options as they prevented a graphics stutter I was experiencing.
The game will not launch unless you follow the tinker steps, after which it will work perfectly.
Nothing happening after the EA launcher starts up

EA launcher shows up, then gets stuck and never finishes. Totally broken crap.
Broken. Don't bother.

running fine out the box
ignore error message after installation regarding low hardware but configure graphics on ingame settings menu still fairly dark despite highest brightness setting but doesnt impact performance

Like others say, delete OpenAL32.dll and launch from the exe, not the launcher, if you want sound. You can still use the launcher to set up your save games and for general configuration though.
Base game seems to run just fine. Installing ALOT and/or MEUITM2, however, made the game literally unplayable for me. It would crash every other minute or so. I'm not sure which caused it as I didn't have the patience to install one or the other over and over to test it out. Fortunately, I had backups to load from. My other, non-texture mods work just fine though. I would advise you simply back everything up before trying these two.
I had to turn off DVKX in Lutris' settings as another way to stop frequent crashing.
The shadows/lighting is TERRIBLE in this game, but this is not a Linux problem. Happens on Windows as well. If you can actually get ALOT and MEUITM2 working, they fix the heck out of the issue.

Sound does not reliably work when the game is started via the launcher; running without the launcher works fine.
Sometimes the "resume" option from the main menu causes the game to hang, though loading the same save manually from the "load game" menu does not.
Occasional frame rate drops, often when there's a lot of fire in the scene.
Works perfectly OOTB.
The game runs with zero issues with the latest version of Proton.

loging in to ea via the main menu "*" isn't supported in password

Works almost out-of-the-box (from second run onward)
No audio during the first run, but no problems in subsequent ones.
When I launch the game, I got an error about PhysX not being installed. I am NOT using the launcher.
Worked out of the box in a clean Proton prefix with no prior modifications
ME2Controller mod (which adds controller support) works flawlessly in Proton

Works after adjustment
Using "Proton Experimental". Installed the game like normal. When I tried to launch, I got an error about PhysX not being installed. I installed protontricks (https://github.com/Matoking/protontricks) as well as winetricks ("sudo apt install winetricks"). I then used "protontricks 24980 physx" to install PhysX to ME2's prefix. Accepted the agreement for PhysX install, and launched the game. Played through the first mission with no problems. Hopefully this will take care of the PhysX issue if you have it. As far as i can tell, it's the only problem (so far).

Large Address Aware proton launch flag was set to keep audio from falling out of sync during cut scenes.
Delete OpenAL32.dll from game files to restore sound.
When configuring the game use the launcher option provided. Do not launch the game from the launcher, as this breaks sound. Launch the game executable directly from Steam!

Works perfectly out of the box. Basically click & play. Played over 6 hours with zero issues.
Audio was missing when running the game for the first time. Quitting and starting the the game again fixed the problem. Never had the issue again.
Some users are mentioning "crushed" or dark shadows. That is not a Linux or Proton problem, that is simply the art style of this game. It is the same on Windows.

It runs just fine, some minor graphical issues and a minor audio issue when first running the game.
Audio did not work initially but worked after quitting and restarting the game.
Some odd lighting issues, shadows not rendering correctly.
I had one crash during my entire playthrough.
Adekwatna konfiguracja sprzętowa do wymagań i bedzie hulać
This game works like a charm without mods.
There was no sound the first time I launched the game. Subsequent launches saw no problems.
I installed texture mods. With 4k textures, my game crashed every time I tried to use Citadel fast travel. With 2k(?) textures, my game only crashed occasionally, usually during load screens.

Tried a few versions of proton, and different launch flags, Proton 5.13 worked better.
When I first tried the audio was missing, but it was magically corrected later.
The game seemed too dark, and the textures were blurred.
Lost some big bits of the game, and had to F5 all the time.
The game was crashing every hour, but after 4 hours the crashes became more frequent, making the game unplayable.
Used 'export STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH=' to install Origin thin in order to download all DLC and extras, then relaunched with Steam to regain the Steam executables.
Very occasionally the game would crash straight to desktop with no error codes produced, but this is similar to the Windows version.
Played with everything set to max, 1080p with an imported Shep for ME1. Everything works the same as running on Windows, no problems here.

Standard DXVK resulted in "Unable to map memory" errors in the proton logfile + related frequent crashes of the game. Switching to PROTON_USE_WINED3D seems to prevent the crashes (so far)
very minor performance lags, not important
Using default DXVK: frequent crashes (during loading of new areas or shortly after) that log VK_ERROR_MEMORY_MAP_FAILED. Using WINED3D instead: so far no crashes
Installing dlcs+mods is a little more involved. The ALOT mod installer doesn't run, but you can get it installed by using the MassEffectModder tool, which also has a Linux version. You can then install the ALOT .mem files with that, and convert .tpf texture files to .mem files and install them as well
Game audio is missing on first boot, but works after restart.
Only one crash in 20 hours.
I had a loyalty mission auto-end in failure randomly in the middle of the mission. It worked fine after reload.

Needed to remove the "OpenAL32.dll" to get audio
Game need to be started without configuration tool (just use in-game options) otherwise there is no sound at all
Flags that've been used:
PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_USE_D9VK=1
Minor problems, but no worse than on Windows
The game runs fine, but load times between areas are noticeably longer than they really should be.
All the additional DLC is available for free off EA's site, but I couldn't actually get the game to authenticate anything other than the ones I own on Steam through the Digital Deluxe Edition. I needed the DLL crack that bypasses DLC validation to be able to get it to recognize them, even though I'm using the legit installers straight from EA. This is apparently a problem for people on Windows too, and once I took care of that I've had no other problems.

Some of the textures seem a little dark.

Sound lacks in videos and gameplay. Exists in startup animations and launcher
slight stuttering
Sound does not exists in videos and gameplay. Exists in startup animations and launcher
It runs very well don't get me wrong, the microstutter is hardly noticeable.
There is some stuttering but it's hardly noticeable and it only seems to happen in area transitions. It might be a game issue as I've seen more people complain about it, but I'm not sure.
Lots of fun, sometimes crashes.
Occasional texture flashing. Mostly glitches that have been a part of ME2 for years, which includes some closed caption words having black backgrounds instead of allowing the scene behind to show through.
Sometimes doesn't start. Crashed once when I tried to save manually, so I'm very glad it saves automatically.
Almost all the links ME2 has for dealing with your (now called Origin) EA account are out of date, and won't do anything useful. If you already have the game on Origin, you should be able to get away with buying just the base game, and using your Origin account to run it.
Make sure you have autosaving turned on!

Crashes occasionnaly, but is very playable.
Doesn't output any sound the first time you launch the game. No problems after that.
Can be a bit slow but is still highly playable in that regard.
The game crashes and freezes every now and then. I think it has something to do with KDE notifications poping up. You might want to disable them while playing.
Audio doesn't work on first start up, but does after exiting game and restarting.
Does not start in Proton 5.0 on my system. Does with Proton 4.11.13 without adjustment
Games does not start.
Just plug'n'play.
Works perfectly out of the box with Proton 5.0.
It is no longer needed to use the PROTON_USE_D9VK option as Proton 5.0 uses D9VK by default for the supported games.

4.21-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
It has a newer version of D9VK
After alt-tab-ing the camera would lock but It will return to normal after pressing the left mouse button.
Crashes on loading

The audio works from the second start onward.
Sometimes you stop being able to turn past certain point (a quarter of a turn for example). It's like a hard limit and often is in one direction only and I can still do 360 degree turn in the other direction. It's weird and it happens rarely. After a game restart the problem it gone.
Without explicitly setting:
PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 PROTON_NO_D3D10=1 PROTON_NO_D3D11=1
the game runs, but
crashes a few times per hour. With these settings the game is pretty stable -
only one crash in ~10 hours of play.
Tested with 4 versions of Proton: 4.11
, 4.2
, 3.16
and 3.7
. The gameplay
is smoothest with 3.7
. With 3.16
and 4.2
there are noticeable pauses for
about half a second, once in a while, which makes for a choppy play. Still
playable though. With 4.11
the game doesn't even start. Didn't investigate
why.

Sound only work once I ran it for the third time, so some reason, otherwise, pretty flawless, so far.

Works really well so far. The only issue I had was being unable to connect to Cerberus Network, but I think it's a problem with EA servers and has nothing to do with Proton.
