Major crackling on Direct3D 10, and minor crackling on OpenGL.
Use the borderless window option if you want to alt-tab.
I couldn't find an online server, so I cannot verify if multiplayer works.

Textures far away would not appear, as you get closer they start to form until you are close enough and they appear as usual. Might be normal.

The game runs but even after adjusting the brightness to full it is still dark. The pickups being sunk into the main textures is not pretty!
No launch options requires
Pickups are sunk into the game world
Sometimes dropped to the desktop when trying to collect in-game item drops, sometimes crashed out of the game completely.
Over all this game runs out of the box when using the Experimental option but Proton version 6-3-8 may work better for you. Apart from the graphical glitch where the pickups are sunk into the graphics and the occassional drop out when collecting certain in-game items this game is pretty much playable. Running on Ubuntu 20.04.06 with a fresh clean install. Using an nVidia GTX 1050ti with an Intel Quad Core 2500K and 16Gb of DDR3 Ram on Ubunto 20.04.06. No system anomalies noted at the time of this report.

No fuss, works fantastic.
The game didn't properly recognise my graphics hardware to automatically set the settings, however it's very easy to go into settings and adjust it, although presumably it is an issue with my hardware being much newer than what the game was originally designed for.

One of the greatest games of all time. Check the guide linked below to get the best experience.
Used protontricks for D3D10 renderer
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2967089130 Followed this guide to install a couple non-invasive mods to get this 24 year old gem back to snuff, you'd need to do the same thing on Windows; there are no Linux specific issues.

Finished the game and the game is awesome with so much liberty to do things your on way really recommend to anyone who play pc games.
just install KentiesRenderer to run like a modern game.

via protontricks, installed VCRun2015. downloaded kentie launcher (https://kentie.net/article/dxguide/) and replaced the DeusEx.exe with the one inside the zip. works like a charm on ultrawide in this way (3440x1440) without launch options
![](https://avatars.steamstatic.com/95a456fefce4bd551fb6214aad58b2e2d1dfcd3e_full.jpg)
installed kentie launcher
game is dropping framerate very low during intensive moments on Direct3D, OpenGL is fine
Had to install Kentie Launcher to get the game to run in 1080p. Game is laggy on Direct3D and runs fine on OpenGL. Overall, good.
did the same modifications as you would on windows (launcher, renderer, etc.). works perfectly fine now
![](https://avatars.steamstatic.com/da5b164785adec4b39cff891b4cfd005ed87c0b7_full.jpg)
I recommend installing kentie's launcher with Direct3D 10.

Despite being advertised as supporting game controllers, Deus Ex will not recognise inputs from the Steam Deck's controls nor any 3rd party joystick.

The only problem was with I think the fifth mission in Hell's kitchen, where Paul doesn't spawn. But you can search it up and find a few console commands to fix it, that was the only tinkering with the game
Runs perfectly, still as good as it was years ago, recommend

There are some adjustments and mods needed to make this game fully playable. Setting it up is not a smooth experience.
The game has gamma issues. Installing Kentie's "Deus Exe" fixed them.
There are severe performance issues when the game is run in windowed fullscreen mode.
When saving, the game will say that only 7MBs of storage are available. Add the launch option -localdata to fix it.
The game has to be run in fullscreen to avoid annoying freezes when opening menus or the inventory.
The game can run perfectly, but it takes a bit to make it work.

I use the kentie's launcher. I did not use the DX9/10 addon or any texture packs.
My Settings worked great for me: -OPENGL (tested all of the renders, D3D had some input lag, software rendering had rendering bugs), opengl works great although the lighting isn't as good. If you want to mess around with libaries, DX10 would probably work the best -165fps cap to match my monitor refresh rate, worked great -Resolution: 1280x960 just because the old school looks feels more natural but works great at 1920x1080 -Use Directsound with 0 latency -FOV: Automatic -32 Bit colour with detailed textures -Raw input -If using I3 disable your compositor
with D3D there was a slight input delay, opengl there was none
Runs good out of the box esp with opengl selected - with some tweaks it runs better than windows
Game works fine "out of the box" but performance, graphics and mouse responsiveness can be further improved by installing Kentie's Launcher and Kentie's Direct3D 10 Renderer. You need to use Protontricks and install the following packages: d3dx10_43, d3dx10, dxvk, vcrun2010, vcrun2015 for the new renderer to work, though.
Wrote a detailed Steam guide: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2967089130
Slight mouse input delay like vsync was on, even though I confirmed it was off. Fixed with Kentie's Direct3D 10 renderer.
Definitely playable and enjoyable without any tinkering, if you don't mind a bit of mouse input delay, and low FOV.
Runs as well as it would on Windows. No major issues or tinkering needed. Mods are perfect as well.
Was able to run the GMDX mod installer with Wine. It installed just fine and runs whenever I launch the game through Steam. I was able to find my steam install with the games folder through the wizard under the Z: drive if that might help anyone. There was significant slowdown using Direct3D in the video config settings, OpenGL doesn't have this issue. The Audio is really quiet overall for some reason, and the sound settings in-game do not work. I just turned up my speaker and headphone volume while playing to supplement this, not really a dealbreaker issue. Overall it runs very well out of the box, even just Vanilla.
Worked out of the box without needing to add any launch options or change to a different version of Proton.
Played in windowed borderless with OpenGL and DeusExe
Footstep audio was wrong in Hong Kong
It works flawlessly. Linux Gamers stay winning when the classics run as smoothly as this. No tweaks, no bugs, just Deus Ex as intended.
Game runs without any real issues, and is very easy to install qol mods like gmdx and Kentie's launcher.
mangohud %command% INI="..\GMDXv9\System\gmdx.ini" USERINI="..\GMDXv9\System\GMDXUser.ini"
Installed Kentie's launcher and installed GMDX
Had problems with raw mouse input, causing the camera to snap around, disabling fixed it
Very rare crashes
Use Proton 5.13-6, Kentie's Deus.exe and improved OpenGL renderer http://www.cwdohnal.com/utglr/ With Directx10 renderer game had visual glitches and could not set 1440p resolution.
gamemoderun %command%
Runs perfectly OOTB.
Game runs with zero issues OOTB.

Set in-game options the resolution
![](https://avatars.akamai.steamstatic.com/14f1a9927382fa8dea134a0f3ca6f17e6938e131_full.jpg)
The game likes to minimize itself if you alt-tab or otherwise unfocus the game.
The game is extremely dark and color/brightness settings aren't saved on some Proton versions. I only had success with GE versions.
- switched to Proton 5.13-6
- set the color depth to 32-bit in the game's settings
- edited DeusEx.ini file for higher resolution
No mapping for the F12 key (flashlight augmentation) so I mapped it to the D-Pad down
On default proton version, 16-bit color only
Without 5.13-6, the game only runs in a limited color mode, use this version to correct the color depth to what you would experience on a Windows PC.
gamemoderun %command%
For some reason, Direct3D renderer will always be with 16 bit colors with newer proton versions, and I recommend playing with Direct3D since it's a lot better than Software Rendering. Through Proton 5.13-6 I was able to run it with Direct3D renderer with 32 bit colors.
Added dgVoodoo DLLs and set ddraw to native in winecfg. Game now runs perfectly using Direct3D rendering and with 32-bit color. Ended up being much better than using Software rendering, because there are no rendering artifacts and the game doesn't freeze when turning on the flashlight. Probably still needs to tinker with INI file to get higher resolutions though.
Changed ini to set correct resolution
On DirectX rendering mode the game only runs at 16-Bit. Even if you change back to 32-Bit on the menu or config file it will change it back to 16-Bit mode once you loaded a level.
Mouse sensitive in the menu is too high
- If you want higher resolutions (above 1050p) you need to edit
SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/Deus Ex/System/DeusEx.ini
and change valuesFullscreenViewportX
andFullscreenViewportY
manually, loading the Display settings menu will return the resolution back to 640x480 - DirectX rendering limited the game to 16-Bit mode but Software Rendering worked perfectly fine at 32-Bit color
- Mouse moviement on menu and UI elements is too fast, making it at little harder to type codes for instance
Needed to edit some of the inis to set the resolution
Windowed mode displayed black window
Couldn't get Deus Exe to work, just crashed. Also couldn't get the updated OpenGL dll to work, but built-in OpenGL seems to work fine.
Works good with Proton 5.13-6
Brightness can not be changed with Proton 5.0-10, 5.13-6.
With Proton 6.3-8 brightness may be changed by it's default is very dark and at really visible level colors became very faded. Use Proton 5.x better.
Window mode is not usable.
Played with Proton 5.13-6.
Because of very dark default brightness Proton 6.3-8 is NOT usable.

7.0rc3-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Proton 7.0rc3-GE-1
In D3D Mode the whole game is very dark despite the brightness you've set in the main menu
With Proton 6.3-8 you will have a very bright game despite the color depth set (16-Bit / 32-Bit) in both D3D and OpenGL mode.
I recommend using at least Proton 7.0rc3-GE-1 to solve this issue.
However in D3D mode the game will be very dark despite the brightness you've set in the main menu.
I highly recommend changing the render device to OpenGL in the first run dialog or form within the game to get rid of any visual degeneration.
Used the Deus Exe launcher for modern resolution options, fov change, raw mouse input and fps cap change.
If you use a Nordic keyboard layout you will have to use an older version of Proton like 4.11-13 or else certain keys will not work, unrelated to åöäøæ.
