Worked perfectly after I enabled the "Use Steam Runtime" option in Heroic to get the sound working.

Do not buy the 20th Anniversary Edition if you already have the original on Steam, it's not worth it especially with the hires patch below
Proton 7.0-4 is the only one that allows you to use the setup launcher
Minor artifacts that you may encounter with Intel ARC cards. I suggest to try the autodetec function in the setup launcher that may fix even minor issues. However, the game is stable and playable.
You can only play in full screen, there is no windowed option at all.
Just in few areas the engine goes a little below 60 fps but nothing you can't manage.
Please, download this patch - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NkRSU7JUqvlwssN1Un2Y_mauIOuNypS6/view - and follow the instructions, easy and painless.

I installed Ubisoft Connect (the platform I had the game on) with Lutris, then installed the game in the Ubisoft app, installing with the Lutris app doesn't work, as well as running an already installed game. To run the game, open the Ubisoft Connect app and launch the game from there.
a brief (I guess texture?) bug in one of the cutscenes
I followed karafa's guide to make the game runs perfectly
Follow the guide I linked to make the settings box working
Some minor graphical glitches in cutscenes, nothing game breaking
You'll need to follow karafa's guide to make the game experience better.
Credits to karafa as this is much needed to fix French default audio and fixes broken SettingsApplication.exe.
Go to "/home/linux/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/15130/pfx/system.reg" open that up and find "Software\Wow6432Node\Wow6432Node\Ubisoft" remove the last 'Wow6432Node\' so that it becomes "Software\Wow6432Node\Ubisoft".
Then we will go to "/home/linux/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/15130/pfx/user.reg" again open that up hit CTRL+F and type in 'Mode' you can then replace that highlighted selection with "NoBands"=dword:00000001" Then you can open up settings and mess around with that.
Audio was out of sync, and still is for a slight second at the start of the game. Don't know if doing what karafa does fixes it, but I also tried install dsound.dll with Protontricks. Go to "/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/15130/pfx/drive_c/windows/syswow64" and replace it with this dll here https://github.com/legluondunet/MyLittleLutrisScripts/blob/master/Beyond%20Good%20and%20Evil/dsound.dll Might be unnecessary though so I'd suggest launching the game first and then doing this if audio is out of sync. Thanks Franco and mattmacks.
The game does technically run without doing any tweaks, but cannot configure settings so resolution is locked, and the audio is in french and out of sync, so I guess if that doesn't matter give it a shot haha. I did a few things that other people have suggested, but I also installed 2 other mods, https://www.moddb.com/mods/bge-enb/downloads/bge-enb gives some effects and will fix low fps and also https://www.gog.com/forum/beyond_good_and_evil/widescreen_fix/page1 this will make the game's resolution feel more native instead of stretched, get rid of the default 'SettingsApplication.exe' and rename the 'BGEResolutionSettings.exe' to the exe before. Also if installing these two, the d3d9.dll from the ENB you'll need to rename to 'd3d9_proxy.dll' I have not played a whole lot of the game so if needed I will update this report, but everything should be good to go.

Installed the original Gog wide-screen patch and swapped the .exe for the borked settings .exe.
Inverted the right analogue, game notoriously did not allow this on HD ports.
Had to spend hours looking at all different hacks but no one article or submission here had it all right for my deck.
Requires forced experimental mode, this removes audio desync in cutscenes and also audio clips cutting out after starting.
Two steps further required to 1: fix the resolution (broken settings menu needs replacing, wide-screen added) and also 2: fix the audio.
Audio is fixed by making a registry edit (credit to Karafa) -
"By fixing the path to the game in registry, you'll fix the audio language. Go to the desktop mode, and edit the following file with text editor:
/home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/15130/pfx/system.reg Find a phrase:
Software\Wow6432Node\Wow6432Node\Ubisoft Replace it with:
Software\Wow6432Node\Ubisoft
They also mentioned that it would fix the config menu, but that didn't work. So step 2.
Download the original file on page 1 here, it should have .exe in it.
https://www.gog.com/forum/beyond_good_and_evil/widescreen_fix/page1
Find the files for the game, take a note of the settings .exe and the main game .exe. Extract the files to the BG and E files, and edit the new .exe file from to have the name of the settings application (give that one a 1 on the end or similar first, just to be safe). So essentially swap out one borked .exe for a new one that we can open in steam.
Now the settings can be opened, go and set to your desired resolution.
With all these tinkers, the game runs beautifully, audio great, visuals great. Slight borders but with the "nobands" hack I had graphical issues, so happy where it is now. Hope I saved someone 4 hours like me.
Le jeux ce lance parfaitement nativement avec proton 7.0.2 quelque pixel manquent lors de certaine cinématique et des bandes noir.
Parfois il manque certain pixels mes rien n'empeche le jeux de fonctionner.
By fixing the path to the game in registry, you'll fix the audio language and allow Game Configurator to run. Go to the desktop mode, and edit the following file with text editor:
/home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/15130/pfx/system.reg
Find a phrase:
Software\\Wow6432Node\\Wow6432Node\\Ubisoft
Replace it with:
Software\\Wow6432Node\\Ubisoft
The next step will fix the top/bottom bars resolution overscan. Edit the file:
/home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/15130/pfx/user.reg
Find a line containing "Mode". Below it, add a line with following contents:
"NoBands"=dword:00000001
Save changes in both files and go back to gaming mode.
To set a higher resolution, run Game Settings (that now should be working) and perform the following, in order:
- Change Refresh Rate to
60 Hz
, then - Change Resolution to
1280 x 800
. - Make sure that Antialising is turned OFF (could be responsible for glitchy graphics during gameplay).
See attached registry fix to change dubbing from French to English.
I'm experiencing minor graphical glitches, small squares around the mesh edges in some cutscenes. I haven't found a fix for them yet, I've been trying to turn down all the settings on and off but with no results.
Playing this game without tinkering isn't a perfect experience. Out of the box, game itself is playable, but with French audio and rather low resolution, plus the Game Settings won't run. These problems can be easily fixed, but I haven't found a fix for minor graphical glitches that can appear during some cutscenes.
The game does not support native resolution from Steam Deck by default.
Theoretically, it is impossible to change it, because the exe responsible for settings does not work.
You can work around this by throwing a "Widescreen fix" into the game folder which can be found on the GOG forums. To run the correct resolution it is best to change the file name from "BGEResolutionSettings.exe" to "SettingsApplication.exe" and from within SteamOS select "Game Settings" at startup. This will bring up the option to change the resolution to the native resolution for the Steam deck. Simply confirm your selection, exit and launch the game normally.

During the game you will see graphical artifacts in some places, but it does not interfere with the gameplay.
During the game I see minor graphical artifacts in some places, but it does not interfere with the gameplay.
Game runs smoothly, very minor graphical glitches. Game Settings window won't open, so it's not possible to change language from french.
Lauching the game settings window is not working, so there's no way to change the default language from french.
Usar ProtonGE para correrlo :D cero errores dejo enlace a mi grupo de telegram por si necesitan ayuda https://t.me/MintZorinES
I get this error: "Application settings not correctly set or invalid, please re-run settings application"
Out of the box, this is in a terrible state. After you get the initial problems fixed, it works great
dsound.dll from lutris script, wine registry tweaks
forced french language, audio looping, audio out of sync during cinematics. all resolved by steps below.
These were resolved using steps below
Alt+Tab doesn't work correctly (game remains on top of other windows). However, Linux Workspaces still work fine (Ctrl+Alt+left/right arrows).
if using controller, steam version of the game has predefined, uneditable mappings which you cannot disable in-game or via steam. you can disable using registry tweaks in wine which allows using 3rd party remapping s/w like antimicro. See link to my antimicro setup for more info.
Steps to fix issues:
0. Have protontricks, winetricks, and wine installed. If using custom steam paths, change in both the commands AND the reg file. For reg file, use your absolute linux path prefixed with "Z:" e.g. "Z:/home/xxx/etc"
1. From terminal run the following to create backups of registry, fix bad registry paths, use protontricks to setup reg entries for dsound, then use a more reliable version of dsound.dll. Should resolve forced french audio, looping audio, & audio out-of-sync.
cd $HOME/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/15130/pfx;
mkdir reg-backups;
cp -a -t reg-backups *.reg;
sed -Ei 's/Wow6432Node\\{2}(Wow6432Node\\{2}Ubisoft\\{2})/\1/g' system.reg;
find ./drive_c -type l -iname dsound.dll -delete;
protontricks 15130 dsound d3dx9 arial d3dcompiler_47;
wget --output-document= ./drive_c/windows/syswow64/dsound.dll https://github.com/legluondunet/MyLittleLutrisScripts/raw/master/Beyond%20Good%20and%20Evil/dsound.dll;
2. Download bge.reg file or create yourself but use windows-style line endings. Contains reg settings I reverse-engineered from the settings app to fix flicking artifacts + the NoBands fix. Save to ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/15130/pfx/drive_c/bge.reg
3. Regedit seemed to ignore terminal args for me so had to manually import from the gui. Run WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/15130/pfx" wine regedit
then from the top-left of regedit, choose Registry > Import Registry File > and select bge.reg

Thanks to Franco & mattmacks for their tips

I followed mattmacks' solution (see report below) to fix audio loops and French language. It works (thanks mattmacks) BUT, the audio ended up being annoyingly out of sync during cutscenes. I could fix this by replacing the dsound.dll file (the default one added by wine) with the one I downloaded here: https://github.com/legluondunet/MyLittleLutrisScripts/blob/master/Beyond%20Good%20and%20Evil/dsound.dll
So:
- Install dsound either via Protontricks, or, if you don't want to install Protontricks, run this command:
WINEPREFIX=~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/15130/pfx winecfg
(you need to add the "dsound" library under tab "Libraries"). - Download dsound.dll from link above
- Open folder "~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/15130/pfx/drive_c/windows/syswow64" and replace the file "dsound.dll" with the one you just downloaded.
- Fix French language as explained by mattmacks (either via Protontricks or run this command:
WINEPREFIX=~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/15130/pfx regedit
). Note: In mattmacks' solution, "HKLM" stands for "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE".
If you're interested, you can find more details about the audio issue here: https://forge.dotslashplay.it/play.it/doc/-/wikis/games/beyond-good-and-evil
Using the latest version of Proton (5.13-4) I experienced few visual glitches, forcing the use of version 5.0-10 removed the glitches.
If you, like me, did not have native full-screen resolution, you can disable the top/bottom black bars by following the steps reported here: http://www.gamersonlinux.com/forum/threads/beyond-good-and-evil-guide.810/ (scroll to section explaining how to add "NoBands", you can access regedit with the usual command protontricks 15130 --gui
or WINEPREFIX=~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/15130/pfx regedit
)
Unfortunately Steam's version throws an error when launching SettingsApplication.exe so I couldn't find a way to change any graphics settings.
Fixed sound loop and language in English!
Fix sound loop:
- Start "protontricks 15130 --gui":
- Install dsound (fixes sound loop)
Fix French language:
- Start "protontricks 15130 --gui":
- Open regedit
- Navigate to HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node
- You will notice that this node contains another subnode "Wow6432Node" which contains a "Ubisoft" node. We basically need to "move" this node to the correct "Wow6432Node".
- Create node HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Ubisoft\Beyond Good & Evil
- Under HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Ubisoft\Beyond Good & Evil, create DWORD "InstallLanguage" and set it to 1.
TLDR:
- Install DSound via Protontricks
- Move "HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Wow6432Node\Ubisoft\Beyond Good & Evil" contents to "HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Ubisoft\Beyond Good & Evil".
Have fun!
The audio loops endlessly, and all of the voices are in french.

The settings application being borked means it is seemingly not possible get the game's audio in English
Get a custom version of dsound.dll and add a DLL override for it. The dsound link I used was the one mentioned in one of the earlier reports. I experienced a bit of audio crackling after doing this, though.
The settings application for the game is borked; even if you try to run it on a WINE instance with the right EAX version installed the application simply won't run. This means you can't change the language of the game from French to English or anything else
Grab the GOG version of the game and run that in Steam instead, that has the previous version of the game before Ubisoft broke it. The GOG version gives you an in-game option on what language to use and supposedly has better performance than the new version.
You will also be needing a widescreen mod for this game, check PCGamingWiki for that.

runned in console "protontricks --gui" then selected game, and installed dsound.dll through it
for some reason only French is available as sound, but you can enable subtitles in game menu.

Lots of sound loops. Needs a custom version of dsound (I used the version that previous reports mentioned) and a dll override for it
Ubisoft somewhat broke the game with an update a little while ago that was supposed to add controller support. This update changed the default language for audio to French and supposedly heavily reduced game performance, there are guides for Windows users (https://steamcommunity.com/app/15130/discussions/0/1609400247628782901/) but it is not so easy to do on Linux without first getting access to the Settings Application of the game (the registry editing solutions don't seem to be reliable).
In order to open the Settings Application you need to be using an instance of WINE with the right version of EAX installed - the program also won't work if you rename it. I have no idea how you would go about doing this - so hopefully someone else can figure this out and make a guide on it.
Alternatively, you could maybe try and grab the GOG version of the game and run it through Steam, which is supposedly the pre-patched version of the game. Ubisoft might also revert the patch if enough people harass them about it (why did they patch it out of the blue?).
The game also needs a widescreen patch (check PCGamingWiki)
Terrible sound loop issues.
I used D9VK to get true aspect ratio but it was not full screen.

It works for me after the update. There are some sound loops.

new updated not work with proton. before Updated work good on Proton

Runs really well, but has some audio looping issues. In order to fix those you need to download this version of dsound library: http://www.mediafire.com/download/yvdxcw7663v1k67/dsound.dll and copy it into Windows/system32 folder (replace the one that comes by default). Then use winetricks or protontricks to configure your Steam prefix to use the native version of the library. E.g.: protontricks 15130 winecfg Libraries -> Add "dsound" -> Set it to "native, builtin" The audio looping problem should be gone, and you should be able to enjoy the game.

As mentioned by others, plays just fine but has numerous issues with sound.

game starts up and runs fine without tweaks. The issue is that the audio loops and cuts out.

Tried many Steam play version in the last couple of months but the audio loop issue doesn't seem to be fixed,overall playable with no issue at all,except that stupid audio loop which happens randomly.You can mute the audio but personally i think it takes a lot away from the game without the audio.Also tried to overwrite that dll which was mentioned from my win7 install but no luck.

Game play is fine but sounds work for most of the time but do often cut out or loop

Runs well except for some audio problems. It seems there are several methods to get rid of them. I used this one: https://www.gog.com/forum/beyond_good_and_evil/cutscene_audiovideo_sync_fix. The downside of this is that your CPU will be working at 100% all the time.

Works well performance wise. Audio does seem out of sync with the cutscenes.

Didn't notice any issues at all.

Crashed with a buffer overrun reported by the Visual C++ Runtime Library, attributed to CheckApplication.exe.

Cinematic + audio issue when not frame capping at 60FPS.

runs out of box. no tweaks used. no graphics problems here, but sound loop problem here and that's why i give silver rate

It works out of the box but there are some minor graphic and sound glitches.

Seems to run fine but has looping sound effect issues.

SFX audio repeat issues

Audio glitches in game itself. During dialogue etc, repeating sounds.

Audio glitches (sfx repeating)
