Works fine on Proton 4.11-13
The menu text becomes illegible at 1366x768, but at 1024x768 is perfectly legible. I assume this is a problem with the game itself, and not Proton.
Noticed no problems. Works well on Proton 4.11-13

Windowed the game works fine.
Fullscreen isn't entirely fullscreen (taskbar is visible), and the mouse doesn't work properly.
Fullscreen the mouse interface is borked.
Game works perfect in Windowed mode.
Taskbar obstructed part of screen when running fullscreen, and input was broken.
Mouse interface is broken fullscreen.
Works perfectly with Proton 4.11-13
The native version crashed my system, but Proton works great.
Slow and stalled loading, frequent framerate drop to unplayable levels.
Slow loading, stalling of transitions, and really bad FPS no matter the resolution of graphic settings.
Was not able to install Arx Libertatis port, presumably cuz the game's exe has been updated since last release of the port.
I had to delete graphic.cfg in the game's folder in order for the game to run.
The game loaded extremely slowly. And when it was loaded it was a slideshow.
Better at lower resolutions, but background effects and such will cause it to slow down to an unenjoyable level.
Slowdown, which gets worse at higher resolutions.
Game runs great out of the gate. No problems.
I didn't test multiplayer.
Music can be disabled, but the crackling sound is very grating.
Music volume slider doesn't work. Audio suffers crackling severely for certain sounds (gunfire).
At 1366x768 the right side of the screen has a vertical band. Lower resolutions have no issues.
Disabling the music and ignoring the crackling, it is playable, but the crackling is very irritating.
Music volume slider doesn't work. Audio suffers crackling severely for certain sounds (gunfire).
At 1366x768 the right edge of screen has a band that runs the screen vertically from top to bottom. Lower resolutions don't seem to have any issues.

Fully playable with Proton 3.7-8, but all other versions resulted in screen lag when the mouse was moved and sound crackling.
The game music doesn't play, but sound otherwise works.
Intro videos do not play. You have to ESC to skip them or the screen will hang black indefinitely.
Mouse / Screen lag makes the game unplayable
Mouse causes game screen update to lag inexplicably, making it unplayable.
Moving the mouse causes stuttering, lag, and freezing of the game screen.
Fully playable on Proton 3.7-8, all other versions have screen lag whenever the mouse is moved, and crackling sound.
The game music doesn't play, but sound otherwise works.
Intro videos do not play, you have to ESC to skip it otherwise it will hang on a black screen indefinitely.
Works fine on Proton 4.11-13 under MX Linux, though it did seem to run on the warm side.
Interestingly, I could not get this same game to run correctly under Manjaro on the same hardware.
The frequent hard crashes make this game unplayable, and potentially unsafe to run on your hardware.
Sound crashes the game after several minutes. And it brought my system down twice.
Sound seems fine, but after several minutes of play will crash the game, and the system.
You have to edit DISCIPLES.INI in the game directory and change every asset pointer to the actual game assets (it assumes a Windows installation) in order to actually get the game running.
The slowdown and overheating issues are too much.
Slowdown, improved by lowering resolution, but still not acceptable.
Maybe not a bug, but both this and Beyond Divinity cause my cpu to get extremely hot.
Unplayable.
It's disabled by default - had to uncheck the "disable sound" option in the game's config program.
Slow to the point of being unplayable. I played thru the entire game on the same hardware in Windows.
DV9K wouldn't play at all. Different versions of Proton seemed to make no difference.
Works great! Recommend installing Killah's fix, which adds Legends of Aranna.
Logo movies are black, but as they are not the game, it's not really an issue.
The giant black square cursor makes it unplayable.
Cursor is a giant black square and the character head is blacked out.
Tried various suggestions and could not fix the issue.
There are a lot of briefing movies in the game - movies not playing is a serious detriment to the experience.
You need to use the config tool to find the option that works for your setup. OpenGL option did not work on mine, for instance.
Movies do not play. Black screen on start - you have to ESC to get to game menu.
Game loads, but no in-game text
Missing text means the interface can't be easily navigated and the game rendered unplayable.
Works great! Fullscreen the videos stutter, but Windowed they play correctly.
Videos stutter if playing Fullscreen, but playing Windowed they play correctly.
Game works great - Proton 3.16-9 @ 1024x768x32
Game would not start at default desktop resolution, only at game resolutions of 1024x768 or 800x600.
Game speed slider does not seem to work. At least, I did not notice a difference, a problem I also had with 7 Kingdoms: Ancient Adversaries.
Incredibly slow. Unplayable.
In order to run, had to add launch option: PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Game is unplayable.
Audio works sometimes. Others it was completely silent.
Crashes fullscreen. Windowed doesn't display properly.
Starting up it will spit out an error message, but continue loading. Loading a game will cause it to crash.
Too slow. Too obviously broken.
Videos play, but are bordered by artifacts (think scrambled NES display). Obvious, slow and uneven, blitting.
Lagged cursor, lagged movement. Animations and movement are slow and there is obvious broken up blitting.
Screen edge scrolling with the mouse is broken. This alone makes the game unplayable. There are also missing animations.
Static animations.
Screen edge scrolling works only left and up, but not down and right. This makes the the game unplayable.
Unplayable.
Character does not respond to any input commands from keyboard or mouse, even though the menu can still be accessed and used.
Game cursor is slow in menu. When the game begins the character does not respond to ANY input commands.
Works fine on Proton 4.11-13
It works fine on this MX Linux install, but I couldn't get the game to work on Manjaro on the same hardware. I assume it's a Manjaro issue.
For a 60 hour RPG, I think it unlikely anyone could tolerate the crashes enough to power through the game.
Seems like different versions of Proton are worse when it comes to this.
Crashes unexpectedly, and too frequently.
Game screen doesn't draw/refresh/update correctly, so it's completely unplayable.
Loads under Proton 4.11-13, but once it the game it becomes impossible to play.
The game speed is just too slow to be enjoyed.
Game is too slow, and the game speed slider in game has no effect, rendering the game virtually unplayable.
Unusually slow gameplay.
Variously, music gets stuck, doesn't play at all, and sounds are jacked or absent depending on which version of Proton used.
Terrain turns all black the moment game starts.
You have to add KeepRes=1 to Conquests.ini file. Otherwise lots of borking occurs.
Depending on the settings the game will load in such a way where the mouse input will not correlate to what is being displayed at all. You'd have to click way to the right of a button for instance, to effectively click on the button.
It lost focus of the save games folder and pointed to the default Home directory instead.
Will crash on startup depending on video settings.
Doesn't load at all on any version of Proton
I couldn't get this game to run on Windows either, so there's that.
Bugs out during load spitting out long error messages, or just doesn't load at all, depending on the version of Proton used.
Works perfect.
The native version offered by Steam ran, but no audio. Switching to Proton fixed that.
The game is fully functional, it otherwise looks fine, though the lines are an irritation.
The bottom edges of some textures get a broken up line under them. Noticeable on buildings, under trees, etc..
Too much slowdown
Works best w/ Proton 3.7-8, but the slow performance is still present
Could not install the Sneaky Upgrade patch (installer can't find the Windows registry entry).
No sound, which is an integral part of the gaming experience.
No sound whatsoever.
Game is only playable using the launch option --option fullscreen=FALSE
Fullscreen was black. Audio played, cursor would show, but screen was otherwise completely black.
Only one screen resolution was selectable in the configurator and it was 1024x768. Full screen this does not display. Windowed it cuts off part of the game on a 1366x768 desktop.
The game is playable in windowed mode, but YMMV.
Fullscreen is black, but you can hear audio and see the cursor. You have to use launch option --option fullscreen=FALSE to play windowed.

Moving mousing causes serious frame hitching.
Constant frame hitching that seems related to mouse movement.
You have to remove the *.con files from the "/steamapps/common/Unreal II The Awakening/Music/" folder in order for the game to run.
open the UT2004.ini and change the rendering device by uncommenting (remove the ";") before RenderDevice=OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice, and add it in front of the default D3D render device.
Runs flawlessly.
Edit the UT2004.ini to change the renderer from D3D to OpenGL.
Extremely slow performance on Linux vs Windows using the same hardware.
I've run the same game on the same hardware on Windows 8 without such a horrendous performance impact.
Game runs well w/ the Unofficial Patch & Proton 3.7-8
Doesn't work
Renaming the exe's did not work, uninstalled / reinstalled, tried some suggested launch commands and different versions of Proton - nothing works.. The game spends some time loading, but crashes when when it gets to History Files every time.
It takes some time for the game screen to return after alt-tabbing away from it. It will appear black, but if you wait it will return and can be played as normal.
Name swap the exe's as others have suggested, otherwise it takes forever to get into the game.
Game appears to run fine using Proton 4.11-13
Game runs fine. I had to use nGlide to turn off Vsync for videos to play - otherwise be a black w/ only sound.
Videos are black out of box, but running nGlide config and turning off Vsync got them working properly.
Simply doesn't load. Starts to load, but never gets running and eventually stops trying.
Tried every version of Proton. :/
