Unreal default input uses inverted mouse axis, which makes it a non ideal first time experience.
DirectX installer iteraction needed. Then another popup requiring touch after install.
Once mouse axis is corrected and some minor touch and mouse usagw required, the game is playable, but it is a game of another era and keyboard is essential for full gameplay.

Unreal Gold runs perfectly on linux and is a really fun game, the only problem is that it`s not sold anymore by epic.

This game is very finnicky with alt-tabbing. Sometimes trying to alt-tab back to the window will open it for a split second, then it will minimize on its own again. I've found closing my Steam library window helps this somewhat. Even after, sometimes alt-tabbing will bring you to a mostly-black window with a smaller resolution screen in the top left corner. Alt-tabbing back and forth fixes this, but it's very inconsistent. Just be aware if you plan on alt-tabbing a lot while playing this game. Windowed mode doesn't help either, and switching between Proton Experimental and GE-Proton didn't seem to make a difference.
Playing this out of the box works just fine, however a majority of my testing occured after installing OldUnreal's 227f patch for Linux. OOBE is great for anyone who wants a classic, no-frills, low-res experience.

Works out the box but a community patch is necessary to run the game in modern resolutions, otherwise enjoy classic standard def black bars
Running community patch 227j to scale the hud properly at higher resolutions https://www.oldunreal.com/downloads/unreal/oldunreal-patches-for-unreal-latest-ver.j/
It is recommended to install community patch 227j to properly scale the hud in HD, otherwise your hud will become ant sized the moment you go beyond 540p resolutions

No issues
If your graphics card is like mine the list of available resolutions will max out the dropdown menu option so you can't set the higher resolutions. You can play it just fine in its default resolution, but if you're like me and want as high a resolution as I can get, then...
- Right click the game in Steam Manage >> Browse local files A file browser window should pop up in the game's directory
- Open the folder titled "System"
- Search for Unreal.ini and open it in a text editor
- Scroll down to the section called [WinDrv.WindowsClient] find the key as follows and set it to your desired resolution and color bits (16 or 32)
- Save the file and launch the game
Resolution maxed at 1024x768
Game works alright on Deck and can be played vanilla, but for the best experience (native res, OpenGL, other nice features) I recommend installing the OldUnreal227 patch, which can be done by adding the install exe as a non-Steam game and running it with Proton.
Runs perfectly OOTB.
The game runs with zero issues OOTB.

Controls require significant modification from default settings to be sensible, and will also require sensitivity/stick inversion changes.
When first launching, the game displays a launcher that is completely inaccessible short of the "finish" button. Fortunately, all the settings from it can be tweaked in-game.
Text in the menu, when running at higher resolutions, is very small and hard to read.
Fails with application error
I have not looked into workarounds.
Got it working, ignore my last post. Was a fault on my side.

Application load error (0x02)
I have tried with all versions of proton and last few GE versions, and I keep getting this same error after the directX install prompt.

Textures need fixing
On proton 6.3, textures are washed out, and the wrong color. On 5.13, textures are fine, but brightness settings do not work.
Works flawlessly, and no issues running with unofficial patch 227i and HD textures mod v3.1.
Runs flawlessly.
Too buggy mouse input.
Fast pressing fire sometimes didn't work, as if input sampling was slow. Long pressing kept firing for minutes or until ammo ran out. Starting a level or changing weapon also triggered the primary fire for no reason.
Constantly firing the weapon makes it hard to keep any ammunition of value.
I selected missing textures because the detailed texture layers are missing (the surfaces should appear more detailed when up close)
OOB the game runs fine except detailed textures appear to be outright missing.
No issues.

Granted, I didn't play very long and will add an updated report if needed, I will definitely recommend using the Direct3D settings as the old glide settings don't seem to allow full screen play.

Works perfectly in that it runs out of the box. Tested with the default "Direct3D" renderer.
However, because this game is so old, the controls are quite weird. I recommend changing the movement to WASD and unchecking Invert Mouse (for some reason, the X axis is inverted too).

Working perfectly out of the box.

Locked 60FPS on 800x600 resolution

Game runs at full speed, supports higher resolutions, input works fine and so does audio, saving, and loading. Main problem is that you cannot alt-tab without the game crashing and a critical error window popping up.

Only windowed mode. works not in Full Screen at startup and playing.

Did not have to tweak at all. The game is a bit dark though.

Flawless.

Runs perfectly

Seems perfect

only runs well in 640x480 resolution and because is Unreal engine is so dark even if the brightness is at maximum

Runs great on 3.7-5 beta. 3.7-3 & 3.7-4 beta lost mouse input occasionally (had to press mouse button to get mouse control back). Happened less when using Steam controller.

No workarounds needed. There are small lags in specific areas with certain graphic elements, but those may be because the game is old and may not be well optimized to modern systems

Laptop touchpad might throw the mouse a bit 'off' in the menu.

Steam client freezes trying to start the game

Everything seemingly works perfectly. No glitches that I could find.

Perfectly

Runs well. No issues encountered.

No issues so far playing the game.

Runs fine. Game audio didn't work first time. Restarting the game fixed that.

No audio, rashes when mouse leaves/alt tab, weird mouse filtering

No
