Manual configuration via included setup utility is required for the game to fully work on Steam Deck! From the menu provided when launching the game from Steam, select:
.
Configuration > Ask each time
.
A setup dialogue window will pop up. Check the Video
part and set each option given to its value given (for all other options, keep presets or adjust to your liking):
Display Mode = 1280x800
For use with an external display, select prefered resolution from list. Workaround/troubleshooting: selectWindow
, run game, set (fullscreen) resolution in the in-game options.Allow Resolution Changes
◼Disabled (Uncheck)
Show Intro
◼Disabled (Uncheck)
You can always replay it from the game main menu.Use Direct3D
✔Enabled (Check)
Important! Else, no zoom (camera, map) in game!
.
Some text is very small. Most of it still legible. Use of Steam Deck system display zoom helps in many situations.
.
In-game UI shows very minor glitch (really thin horizontal line at the top of the UI) I soon did not notice it any more, being busy playing. :-) Other review said, there's a third party exe-file to overcome this (see moddb.com). Not worth the pain, imo.
.
For the game to work in fullscreen mode (with camera zoom still working), it must be configured accordingly. See above/below.
.
Using standard Proton (v8.0), I experienced corruption of save games a couple times. Switched to GE-Proton v8.23 - seems having solved the issue.
.
The game's camera/map zoom function is vital, esp. on small screens. For it to work, the game must be configured accordingly. See above/below for detail.
.
The settings recommended above are based on my personal experience. It's the setup that works best for myself.
Here some additional remarks on those settings:
Display Mode:
Changes to screen resolution made in the in-game options will be discarded on exiting the game app and revert to the value set in the setup utility.Display Mode:
Fullscreen resolution (i.e. 1280×800 for the internal display) is required here for the in-game zoom function to work! No zoom - no fun, really!!! Use "Display Mode = Window" for troubleshooting or as a fallback, only.Use Direct3D:
For the in-game zoom function to work, this must be enabled, additionally!Allow resolution changes:
When enabled, "Display Mode = Window" is mandatory for proper startup of the game (else black screen). Not recommended!Show Intro:
The size of the intro video depends on the selected screen resolution. Higher resolution > smaller video. Applies to the in-game video cutscenes as well. Not really a problem.- So, what's the deal with this setup? Well, there are substantial advantages (no need to download third party exe-file, zoom function working, fullscreen mode in-game) over very minor disadvantages (imho): Intro and cutscene videos do not scale to fullscreen, So there's a thick black border on all sides during playback; start screen (main menu) is not being scaled to fullscreen, too; in-game UI shows a very minor glitch (really thin horizontal line at the top of the UI) you soon will not notice any more, being busy playing. :-)
its a good game, tough overshadowed by shadow magic, needs a bit of tinkering to get it to run properly
i made the config
can only play the game on widow mode, but theres a fix that simulates widescreen
if you want the run the game, go to the configuration tool and run it on window mode
if you want to run it on widescreen, go to modDB, search for "AoW2 and AoWSM fix for SteamDeck" and follow the instructions on the README
Gets stuck on the Steam Logo launching screen - plays game intro cutscene audio in background
I've tried different proton versions:
- Experimental
- Proton 5.0-10
- GE-Proton7-29
The game takes a while on the "Starting launch..." Screen, goes to the Steam Logo launching screen, displays the Triumpth Studios logo for a brief second, before showing the Steam Logo launching screen again while the intro cutscenes play and you can hear the cutscene audio.
At vertical resolution greater or equal to 1440 pixels, the font is no longer displayed properly and becomes illegible.
Windowed the game works fine.
Fullscreen isn't entirely fullscreen (taskbar is visible), and the mouse doesn't work properly.
Fullscreen the mouse interface is borked.

Black screen in fullscreen mode. Works fine in window mode both with D3D or not. Maybe a bug because of my old graphics driver (fglrx).

Worked without any tweaks.

Works without any tweaks right away

Both software renderer and Direct3D work perfect
