Despite being currently marked as unsupported, I had no issues completing the game on Deck
Reduced framelimit to 40 FPS via Steam Deck activities menue
The thrusters volume seems occasionally too loud
In the main hub the framerate dips to less than 30 FPS, normally inside space stations it is between 40 and 60 FPS, outside stations 60 FPS. This is not a fast paced game, so the experience is mostly pretty smooth and the game totally playable.
Showcase: https://youtu.be/ch2zhlSEJj0
My hardware is slightly below the specs. Async reprojection would improve the experience (which is still borked). Yet playable.
Will ask for VC++ runtime and UE Prerequisites installation on the first start which I had to do on Desktop. Played with Valve Index. Haven't tried current stable Proton (9.0-4) but works without issues and Proton Experimental.
With CEG starting to be supported in the latest Steam Client beta and Proton experimental (6.3-20211027) the game works now out of the box.
I played through some known trigger points, where the game tends to crash when there is an issue with CEG (you could get the game working with Proton before, but it was tricky) and these all worked, no issues.
It's tricky to get it working, but it's possible and works beautifully then. Singleplayer as well as Multiplayer. See this github comment for details: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/530#issuecomment-431513884 In short: get ceg exe files via wine, set xaudio2_5 to native.
Since CEG is now working, this game works flawless
Tabbing out and back into the game, might show a small Window, doing it again fixes it.
Coop joining worked flawless. We had one disconnect, which might have been unrelated to the game.
Proton experimental has been selected for all my other games, haven't tried stable (currently 9.0-3), game works without tinkering. For me it defaulted to medium settings, on Index with nvidia and no async reprojection (both steam client and steam vr are beta) it runs pretty smooth on my Index. Only issue maybe: I need to grab the Index controllers pretty tight or objects will fall out of the hand easily.
Deck verified with the native Linux version, works without issues.
Showcase on deck: https://youtu.be/jlHlPwmSXHY
Played about 5 hours at release day. Single and local coop. No issues at all. A whitelist candidate.
Launch options needed: PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command% -nointro
Very few freezes, like once or twice in 20h+
If the game doesn't start at all, check if you have 'core' file in the folder of the game's binary and remove it. E-Sync (and maybe also F-Sync depending on your kernel) should be disabled, or you might experience missing textures or hangs during saving/hacking.
Doesn't work with Steam VR 2.3.1 (beta) and Proton experimental-8.0-20240111c
Game used to work, hopefully gets fixed when the issues with OpenXR and/or the plugins on Linux get fixed.
Verified, says it all. Nice bonus: uses the native Linux version
Demonstration on Steam Deck: https://youtu.be/wGBmsFgqm7Q
No issues, works since release day out of the box with Proton
There might be a little hiccup here an there, probably due to shader caching. This game uses DX12 via vkd3d and shows great performance.
Works out of the box
Only had to manually select 720p resolution, as it seems to default to 1080p. Text might be considered a bit small, I had no issues reading all though.
Steam Deck Verified mark is accurate
Uses ~23 watts with 60 FPS. Limiting FPS to 30 either ingame or via performance overlay reduces this to ~12 watts and doubles batterie life while still being enjoyable.
Runs great in general, just some minor issues: not full screen, changing size of the window closes the game. Sometimes a Chinese question pops up, where you can only confirm the dialog, but it pop ups again. Only closing the game helps then. Controller works great.
- Warning: when updating to Patch 1.5 and Proton 7 you might have to clean the prefix:
SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/1091500
otherwise the game crashes on startup. Works flawless with a fresh install. - The game runs out of the box, Patch 1.5 improved the performance drastically (on my hardware now without DLSS at 1080p with 60 fps, before I had to use DLSS with quality setting to get stable 60 fps).
- You have to close the game manually via the "Stop" button, if the launcher is not disabled via launch option
--launcher-skip
. Without the launcher the game closes normally. - DLSS can be activated via
PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 %command%
- Ray tracing can be activated via
PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr %command%
, but it lets you only enable ray tracing, if you also check reflections, shadows or lighting, the game crashes.
With stable Proton 6.3-2 already great performance, even better with 6.3-2 Experimental.
Mouse stutter from 6.3-1 is fixed. In 45h I had one missing texture issue, but this is a whitelist-worthy experience.
Tabbing out of the game will render the game window black, has to be killed then. Changing between fullscreen, borderless fullscreen or windowed will also lock up the game.
Bethesda logo video is locking up the game, can be skipped with these launch options: +in_terminal 1 +com_skipIntroVideo 1
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="iphlpapi=b"
According to PCGamingWiki set launch options to WINEDLLOVERRIDES="iphlpapi=b" %command%
or the game doesn't start or crashes.
Game can start with newer versions of Proton (4.11-13 up to 6.3-8c) if PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1
is additionally set, but it crashes after a while.
Does not crash on 4.2-9 and the override. Played through the tutorials, there is a little hiccup every now and then, but seems stable otherwise.
Needs Proton-Experimental (crashes with Proton 7.0-4) and works then flawless.
See https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/wiki/Changelog/5f44f9c3c24e776f63245cc6682f505933364a63
Using Steam VR 2.3.1 (beta) doesn't allow for async reprojection (at least with nVidia for me). Slight double images on certain scenes.
Very little stutter here and there, noticeable but not hardly disturbing. Hangs on exit for about a minute or less. No registry adjustments nor proton adjustments.
Grey screen for a few seconds, then drop to desktop
Tried Proton 5.13-1, Proton 5.0-9, Proton 5.9-GE-6-ST... but no luck on my system. Maybe nVidia related, as the other report has an AMD card and the game seems to work there.
Latest Update (Client, Linux Runtime or Runtime - Soldier) fixed starting the game, still no videos (2020-10-25)
Videos not working, will start working probably soon when media foundation patches are evolving.
Game is not working for me with Proton 5.0-10rc nor Proton-5.9-GE-8-ST. So I guess the Steam updates fixed starting the game. If you see a black screen, hold F to skip the videos. You can play the Levels, but you're missing out most of the story right now.
DSW Update 1.20 fixed video playback, this is now fully playable.
Using all the latest updates (including Steam client updates, which are improving Steam Play compatibility with Proton 5.13), this game is now fully playable. The player was replaced with a ffmpeg based player, which seems to work fine with Proton.
Used Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF to play videos (media foundation needed) and used launch parameter -dx11
as game defaults to DirectX12 in the alpha with doesn't work yet. But DirectX11 renderpath seems to work pretty fine.
Known bug: game can crash when tabbing out while in fullscreen.
A native Linux version has been confirmed by Rockfish Games for release. Though the Prototype worked directly with Proton, the closed Alpha needs some tweaks, which are easy to apply. Maybe some graphics are looking different due to DX11 instead of DX12, but it still looks gorgeous.
Proton-5.11-GE-3-MF GloriousEggroll
For videos to work, media foundation is needed, e.g. with Proton-5.11-GE-3-MF.
For audio to work, set wineprefix to Windows 7, e.g. with winetricks:
WINE=SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/Proton\ 5.0/dist/bin/wine WINEPREFIX=SteamLibrary/steamapps/compatdata/1128920/pfx winetricks win7
.
Also using launch option "-dx11" for better performance.
No Audio if prefix is set to Windows 10. Audio can be fixed by either setting the prefix to Windows 7, or by launching it via Proton 4.11 first and then with Proton 5.x
Proton-6.0-GE-1
If using Steam Linux Runtime - Soldier beta (0.20210114.0+srt1) the game doesn't start. Either downgrade to stable, or start steam from the commandline: PRESSURE_VESSEL_RELAUNCH_CONTAINER=0 steam. A fix is on the way. If using Proton-5.21-GE-1, either user Launch option: -dx11, or manually overwrite vkd3d-proton/d3d12.dlls with those from VKD3D 2.1.0.
6.5-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Proton-6.5-GE-1
Upgrade to UE4.26 requires 3rd party installation, which fails. Workaround:
- Download
https://aka.ms/vs/16/release/vc_redist.x64.exe
- Copy
vc_redist.x64.exe
intoSteamLibrary/steamapps/common/EVERSPACE™ 2/Engine/Extras/Redist/en-us
- Rename
vc_redist.x64.exe
toUE4PrereqSetup_x64.exe
(overwriting the existing file)
If you want to have videos playing, media foundation is needed, e.g. via Proton-6.5-GE-1 (Proton-6.5-GE-2 did not work for me). Works also with Proton-6.3-2 but videos will show the test pattern.
Also using the custom proton build 3.16-7 Beta ED (it's using DXVK 0.93 though) from https://github.com/redmcg/wine/wiki. Looks like the custom proton build is copied from ".steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/" to ".local/share/Steam/compatibilitytools.d/" automatically. I applied the fixED.sh script there as well. After setup and selecting this build for E:D, I had to check the file integrity again, otherwise it didn't start. Performance is good but noticeably behind the Windows version. Works even with VR, but I had some performance issues after a while (maybe steam vr 1.3.7 related). Generally playable well.
Whitelist candidate.
Tested the early access version, including expeditions update, last patch was #3 for me. Everything works ootb.
Works without issues. For buyers of the original game (pre stage 2): you can switch to the "legacyevolve" branch in the beta settings. Multiplayer still working via p2p. Just played several matches with friends without problems. Evolve Stage 2 (F2P) had been shut down, so that's not available anymore.
Legacy Evolve works beautifully on Deck
This is refering to the evolve legacy branch (requires the original game to unlock in beta tab)
Evolve Stage 2 doesn't work anymore as the online servers are shut down, but if you are a buyer of the original version (you can still find buy retail keys) it is selectable in the Beta tab and works great.
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 %command%
When asked for connecting to ranked servers, click no. Then connecting to multiplayer works.
Evolve Legacy also still works via inviting friends, but not with matchmaking anymore. Now the Stage 2 matchmaking servers are back up. With the mentioned launch options it works flawless, otherwise you might get stuck in the loading screen.
- Evolve Legacy showcase: https://youtu.be/vLLSrgX41LE
- Evolve Stage 2 showcase: https://youtu.be/TwHs4nbl9SY
Crashes after first cut scene with Proton 6.3-7 and Proton-GE-6.21-2. Videos need media foundation codecs (shows with Proton GE, but crashes).
Works perfect with Proton 6.3-8c after Valve had re-encoded the videos
Videos weren't playing before, but it crashed with Proton GE. Now videos are playing (Valve re-encoded them and delivers them via shader cache). It crashed once. And it could happen, that after tabbing out and back in the game stays black. Might come back after tabbing out and back in again. But in general this game is now an out-of-the box experience.
Performance can be improved with some adjustments to the settings, works flawless otherwise
My settings:
- Anti-Aliasing: low
- Post Processing Quality: low
- Texture Quality: low
- Visual Effect Quality: medium
- Foliage Quality: medium
- Cloth Quality: off
Demo on Deck: https://youtu.be/wBKJa2kCRTU
No isses at all. Played now 2h+, 15 days ingame. Great performance. No crash when alt-tabbing.
Played together with my friends for one hour online, worked flawless. I used the Steam Controller.
Whitelist candidate, works perfect.
In rundown #1 some people had a network error upon starting the game, this is only the first connection of the game with the game's severs. Has nothing to with the game itself, it's mostly a routing issue. Using a mobile hotspot or vpn helps, only needed to start the game. Once successfully started, you can turn the hotspot or vpn off again.
Still runs like a charm with Rundown #4
If nothing significantly changes, this game is a whitelist candidate.
Still a perfect experience with Rundown 5
The intro does have videos, which weren't visible before Proton 6.3, they're very short (1s) and add nothing to the game. So you see now twice the test pattern.
With Rundown 4 I had the issue that hosting the game caused a freeze after like 2-3 hours ingame, never happened when joining a game. Did not happen when I used PROTON_LOG=1 and tried to investigate. Did not happen yet in Rundown 5.
All in all a perfect gameplay experience, if media foundation is fully arriving in Proton, it's again a whitelist candidate.
Works great on Deck
GTFO shows sometimes numbers in the top left corner, which are a bit small.
Devs are working on getting it from playable to verified.
Demo on how it works on deck: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSkY0ovenlk
I just clicked "Play Gas Guzzlers Extreme" (didn't choose 64bit version) and it worked flawless, including multiplayer.
Worked out of the box, joining and hosting. Played with friends online for over an hour.
Mostly input issues are a very tough to overcome. Though possible, it's only for enthusiasts to try.
DXVK_ASYNC=1
Menu needs you to point with both Index Controllers to the entry, and click both triggers. You need to remap grabbing, so you can pick up an item, you won't be able to drop it though. You need to enable auto pickup and smart reload.
Crashes on level transitions, dxvk async seems to mitigate this issue.
Currently not recommended to play via Proton. Workarounds so you could play a bit:
- Use GE-Proton7-31 (or newer) and enable DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command% in the launch options to avoid lockups on transitions (might still lock up though)
- Point with both controllers to menu entries, and push both triggers to click a button
- remap grabbing for grabbing to e.g. Button A via desktop browser and http://localhost:27062/dashboard/controllerbinding.html (not via VR Dashboard, as it's mostly very slow to operate).
- Enable auto pickup, change ladder climbing so you look up and move forward to climb and change reloading to smart reload (holding your weapon to your hip)
Physical puzzles are a bit tricky to overcome if you cannot properly pickup things, but you can often trick the puzzles (push/move boxes in the beginning instead of pickup, be quick with jumping the wooden balance, etc.)
Demo and process of finding these issues here: https://youtu.be/fGRCkSw1x-A
Technically the game would work, if the input issues would be resolved.
Completed the game with Valve Index, works great.
Some stuttering happens here and there, probably on shader compilation or asset loading. Doesn't really affect the experience. Due to a stutter, some cut scenes might be slightly out of sync.
Selecting Open XR mode doesn't work. Game itself has good performance on my system (with automatically set to 50% scaling). Some weird behaviour with grabbing though, as sometimes grabbing happens unwanted and sometimes grabbed items are dropped though still squeezing the controllers. Proton Experimental 8.0-20240205
Works perfect with local play, or on community servers without EAC.
Playing on community servers without EAC works perfect
Some hiccups, probably on shader compilation. Otherwise great performance. Playing on community servers (-noEAC switch for dedicated server) works without issues. Doesn't work on official servers.
Played via friend pass, via Origin online. Played with keyboard not with Controller (Steam controller was detected as keyboard). Steam overlay didn't work, but Origin overlay did, so invitation worked. Otherwise it's possible to tab out and open Origin from the systray and accept the invitation there. Some very minor stutters here and there, but an enjoyable experience in general.
Doesn't start at all.
LIV is used to easily create mixed reality setups for VR streaming. Unfortunately there is no Linux support and it doesn't work with Wine/Proton at all.
Works out of the box, no tinkering needed.
prefix has to be set to win7 for multiplayer
alt+tab out and back in from fullscreen can cause servere fps drops, borderless windows fullscreen is recommended.
voice comms don't work
Multiplayer needs the game's prefix to be set to win7. You can initially create the prefix with Proton 4.11 which sets it to win7 and upgrade from there (upgrades don't change this setting), or set the prefix manually to win7 with e.g. 'protontricks 275850 win7'. Voice comms show you are talking, but nobody can hear you. DLSS works on nVidia with set 'dxgi.nvapiHack = false' in 'No Man's Sky/GAMEDATA/dxvk.conf' (doesn't need launch option 'PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1' as enablenvapi is set via https://steamdb.info/app/891390/)
Works without issues
Integrated YUR.watch doesn't work, due to YUR not working on Linux. But this is optional.
Like ITGaz mentioned, set prefix to windows 10, I used winetricks for that:
WINEPREFIX=~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1079800/pfx WINE=~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Proton\ 4.11/dist/bin/wine64 winetricks win10
Unfortunately I wasn't able to get a 3rd person view up for mixed reality streaming. LIV doesn't work on Linux.
Doesn't work with Steam VR 2.3.1 (beta) and Proton experimental-8.0-20240111c
Game used to work (you can downgrade, how to in the other comments), hopefully gets fixed when the issues with OpenXR and/or the plugins on Linux get fixed.
Little initial stutter on shader compilations, but smooth as butter when done.
Disable HBAO in launcher to get 60 FPS
Launcher needs manual interaction (e.g. holding Steam button and use mouse)
Audio seems partially too loud when shooting weapons
Needs tinkering, either by installing mfc42 manually (e.g. Protontricks) or selecting GE-Proton7-27 (which includes a protonfix) In the launcher it helps to disable HBAO to get 60 FPS instead of 26 FPS
Tutorial: https://youtu.be/6sNg_fy5KOI
Works perfect.
Since dropping support for the native version, Proton 5.0-4 is a perfect alternative. I had neither performance nor gameplay issues. Played online with friends for an hour with the Steam Controller.
Scorn Prologue, after first time setup it works without issues
First time setup will install UE4 Prerequisites, this needs using touchscreen or steam + right touchpad for mouse.
This is the Prologue, not the final game, but Devs confirmed the hardware specifications are the same, so this is a good test scenario for the Deck.
First time setup will bring up the UE4 Installer, which has to be operated via touchscreen or steam + right trackpad for mouse, only once. After that the game works with great performance (mostly 60 FPS, sometimes 40 FPS so far). Full controller support.
Just hit install and play, works great!
- Hint: The game does cloud-sync the settings. That means if you play on Deck, having it set to fullscreen 800p, you'll have fullscreen 800p on your Desktop as well.
- Recommendation: windowed fullscreen, this will autodetect your Deck and your Desktop resolution and no futher changes are necessary.
- Demo on Deck: https://youtu.be/sTPzyoQSWtI
Works out of the box
Just hit install and play, no tinkering needed.
As mentioned in Deck report, graphical settings are cloud-synchronized. Setting resolution to windowed fullscreen helps.
Launcher needs to be operated via holding Steam button and the mouse, otherwise a flawless experience (e.g. with the native Linux version)
As the game is unsupported where Valve tested it with Proton, it would default to Proton. Selecting the Steam Linux Runtime has to be done manually.
Launcher doesn't support Deck controls, but with pressing and holding the Steam button the mouse can be used to start the game via the launcher.
Both Proton and Linux version do have the launcher. In both cases via the Steam button the mouse can be used to start the game (if you don't change the default controller layout). Game itself works great with Deck controls.
Howto, performance and demonstration on Deck: https://youtu.be/t54pzGpHY3A
Doesn't start with Proton. CEG protected.
CEG protected excecutable (see https://steamdb.info/app/203250/config/). Thus not working, as the Linux Steam Client cannot create nor validate CEG games. Does run in wine Steam (e.g. via Lutris).
Works ootb. Played several hours with friends online on HTC Vive with Vive Wands
You need to quit Ubisoft Launcher manually, or stop the game via Steam. It doesn't quit itself. Also the Ubisoft Launcher doesn't save the credentials when "remember me" is ticked. Other than that, the game runs great.
Though Uplay successfully launches, the game closes with "There is not enough memory available to run this program. Quit one or more programs, and then try again." Maybe Denuvo related. Tried to manually install media foundation, but it didn't help.
Proton-5.4-GE-3 + mf-install
I prepared a custom prefix with mf installed:
- install glorious eggrolls custom proton fork (here: Proton-5.4-GE-3), restart steam
- either run a game with this custom proton version selected (maybe delete the games proton prefix afterwards again), or unpack proton_dist.tar.gz to a folder named dist, which you have to create
- clone mf install
- install mf to that custom proton version: PROTON=$HOME/.steam/steam/compatibilitytools.d/Proton-5.4-GE-3 WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.steam/steam/compatibilitytools.d/Proton-5.4-GE-3/dist/share/default_pfx ./mf-install.sh -proton
Proton-5.5-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
No more media foundation workaround needed for this game!
Uplay has to be installed manually
Needs some tinkering as Uplay is not automatically installed anymore. Can be done via protontricks. After that the game works perfect.
This is the same on Windows!
Protontricks has to be installed via Desktop mode, and then Uplay needs to be installed into the game's prefix.
Uplay is not installed and not detected. Needs manuall install via protontricks
Needs tinkering, otherwise it cannot be played due to missing Uplay.
Game supports 720p max and cannot switch to 800p.
How to: https://youtu.be/enYgswgWGdc
Slight performance issues on the intro section, better in the city. Well playable on Deck.
Reducing mesh and texture quality from high to medium improves performance.
This report refers to the day 1 release version of Stray, a patch might improve performance in the future.
Demonstration: https://youtu.be/5wLpVhxcfRY
Only one projector room caused low fps when playing a reel, everything else was smooth
Though overall performance is playable, the game defaults to a high settings preset, I changed to medium where I didn't see much of a quality difference but had a smooth experience overall (except that one single room with the projector when playing a reel)
Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaahEuYH4Zskp4XCFNTtPJlRlUk8mxUlP
bash -c 'exec "${@/2KLauncher\/LauncherPatcher.exe/TheQuarry.exe}"' -- %command%
Minor stutters occur, probably shader caching. Game is pretty new, so the cache has to be build first.
This report is the free demo, just played a few minutes. Report will be updated if any issues arise, or the full version needs ajdusted launch options.
Desktop and VR version run great performance-wise. There is an repeating audio-crackle audible and volumes doesn't seen to to perfectly match, e.g. computer voice is too quiet. So it's not 100% platinum, but as the performance is really awesome, especially in VR, I'd rate it higher than gold.
Works out of the box, with great performance
After using the touchscreen or the steam button + touchpad to change settings, controller input doesn't work
Game defaults to 720p, but also supports 800p. Which needs to be selected via touchscreen oder steam button + touchpad. On the next start it's not an issue and the game itself works great with the Deck's gamepad controls.
How to experience on Deck: https://youtu.be/SAfi-mLqpxI
Multiplayer works great, this is like Laser Tag just in VR and much fun!
Tutorial crashes, but there is only the crappling hook/healing mechanics to learn, which is just pressing B pointing at a tower or at a teamate. For jumping just swing the controller a bit. It's multiplayer only, but it's much fun!
Completed the game on Deck, no issues
Changed graphics settings to low, performance is absolutely enough to enjoy the game on Deck.
Needs Proton 8.0-5 as experimental-8.0-20240111c doesn't work
As I have Proton experimental as standard for all games that don't specify a version, the game stopped working for me. Forcing 8.0-5 helped.
Steam VR 2.3.1 (beta) doesn't work with async reprojection (at least with nVidia for me). Slight double images on certains scenes.
Works perfect since patch 1.0.10.0
Until the native Linux version arrives, it's nice to see that the Wolcen devs fixed a Proton specific bug (patch notes):
- Fixed an issue causing players to have balloons instead of heads when playing the game on Proton. Games works without issues for me so far.
Steam will use Proton for this title, but I recommende to manually select the Steam Linux Runtime to play the native Linux version
Selected 40 FPS via Steam Deck Activities menue
I had no issues when using the native Linux version.
Look and feel, howto: https://youtu.be/V-loj1GGkS4
Install DotNet 4.8 via protontricks
Used protontricks to install DotNet 4.8 (just hit ok on all the error messages). Overlay works, does track movement, does not detect which game you are running and you cannot move the overlay within VR.
Freezes on start. Game and SteamVR crash.
Game does start if SteamVR isn't running, but ofc it's not playable then. Tried Proton 6.3-8c and experimental-6.3-20220119, but no luck.
