As multiple reports have suggested, online play will have sync issues unless you follow the workaround specified here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/813780/discussions/0/7529517456177398719/
The workaround is quite simple, however.
Online play will have sync issues until the specified workaround is followed.
gamemoderun gamescope -e -W 3840 -H 2160 -f -- %command%
Works like a native game without any tinkering required (the launch options I've specified are completely optional)
mangohud gamemoderun gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -f -r 60 -o 30 %command%
After playing a shot, the ball sometimes leaves behind a long trail as it travels. I've noticed this on Windows as well, but it's a bit more frequent/noticeable on Linux.
Using the default Proton version (8.0-4 at the time of writing), the game would load a black screen and crash immediately at launch. After switching to 7.0-6, the game works perfectly.
mangohud gamemoderun gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -f -r 60 -o 30 %command%
Runs like a native game. NOTE: The specified launch options are completely optional and are not required to play the game.
Works almost perfectly out of the box. The only issue I'd faced was few minor artifacts (black triangles on character and object models).
Minor artifacts (random black triangles) were observed on character and track models with the default Proton version that the game used (forgot which one), but were completely absent when using newer Proton versions or Proton GE.
Very few crashes (3 in total, out of 186.8 hours of gameplay) were encountered, but all 3 of these were when I Alt + Tabbed out of the game and came back.
Game launches with Proton GE 6.16 and reaches the initial menu.
Driver and track selection also works, but the game crashes as soon as the race loading screen shows up.
The in-game menu interface also froze now and then, but I'm not sure whether that was caused by my slightly lower-end hardware. This was not something that I'd faced with F1 2020, however.
The game is now playable, but there is room for further improvement.
Constantly flickering shadows. Additionally, certain cars in the showroom (mostly F2 cars) and in the pre-race grid overview turn into a distorted neon-textured mess.
The main menu is a bit choppy at times, but the in-game menu during a race is fine. Additionally, there are slight FPS drops during races, which I didn't experience at all with F1 2020 on the same hardware.
I seemed to notice a somewhat slight improvement in overall performance when using Proton-6.21-GE-2, rather than Proton 6.3-8. However, it was almost negligible.
mangohud gamemoderun gamescope -e -W 1920 -H 1080 -f -r 60 -o 30 -- %command%
Works (almost) perfectly out of the box
Not exactly a "crash", but Origin sometimes doesn't launch on the first try and requires a second try to launch. Additionally, it takes quite a while for Origin to connect. However, I haven't faced any stability issues once the game successfully launches.
mangohud gamemoderun gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -f -r 60 -o 30 %command%
My cloud saves from when I was playing on Windows were missing, and I had to start over with a new save (I lost my settings as well as my career mode progress). However, I have seen people report this issue on Windows and on consoles as well, so I'm not sure if this is a Proton-specific issue.
FPS drops quite a bit during loading scenes (stadium/match overview on match day, training ground before the match, etc.). The FPS drops aren't as bad on Windows.
mangohud gamemoderun gamescope -e -W 3840 -H 2160 -f -- %command%
Running the game with gamescope fixes being unable to Alt-Tab out of the game
In the FIFA 22 launcher that shows up when the game launches, mouse input doesn't seem to be detected (keyboard input works). I'm not sure if this is due to running the game with gamescope.
I've lost my cloud saves 5 times so far (thrice on Linux and twice on Windows, so it doesn't seem to be Linux-specific) when uninstalling and reinstalling the game at a later date. I've also faced this issue with FIFA 23, so I think it's a longstanding issue.
Back when the game used the Origin launcher, everything worked perfectly. But the new EA launcher is very unstable and often does not even launch (it shows "preparing game" and then crashes). Multiple attempts to launch are required, but when the game does launch, there are no further stability issues.
Played multiple online matches with my friends and didn't face any issues.
Local multiplayer works without any issues.
The switch from Origin to the EA launcher has made it difficult to play this game on Linux, as the EA launcher often fails to start. Additionally, cloud saves seem to get screwed up very often, although, this issue seems to occur on Windows as well. Overall, what was once a near-native experience has now become very poor and janky.
Mostly playable using Proton Experimental, apart from quite frequently freezing.
Minor audio crackling occasionally.
The game completely froze 5 times in my 5 hours of play, and froze my entire PC as well. I had to hard reset my PC all 5 times.
The in-game billboards (like the wheelspin and post-race summary stuff) don't display anything; they're just black.
Works mostly well out of the box
The game has crashed for me twice so far (in around 4 hours of play), but both were at the main menu when launching the game.
The game seems to run quite well, with the main issue being that things that require the Xbox game overlay will not work (viewing an online player's gamer card, inviting them to play, etc.).
It's still possible to play online, however. To do this, the host must first launch the game, create a convoy and then invite you. You will then have to open the game, switch to Horizon Solo (if you were in Horizon Life), and then try joining Horizon Life again. At this point, the game will ask if you want to join the player's convoy. (NOTE: For some reason, if I launched the game before the host launched their game and created the convoy, I'm unable to join their convoy till I restart the game).
As for the online experience, it's quite poor currently with frequent connection issues. However, this seems to be a widespread issue that also affect Windows, and has apparently been happening for quite some time now.
Unlike what most others reported, Xbox sign-in worked for me with only a minor issue (On first sign-in, the game says "Sign-in is required to proceed" after the sign-in window closes. Trying to sign-in again immediately works without issues).
The game worked for me with the default Proton version (8.0-4 at the time of writing). However, I switched to Proton Hotfix as most reviews suggested that it performed better and more reliably.
Initially, I'd tried setting my launch options to "
mangohud gamemoderun gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -f -r 60 -o 30 %command%
", as I use this combination for all my games on Wayland. However, setting these launch options for the game caused it to crash each time after the splash screen. Leaving the launch options empty fixed this.
It was sometimes quite difficult to Alt+Tab out of the game (no matter which window I'd switch into, it'd still go back into the game)
Everything worked out of the box, including online multiplayer (Horizon Life). Almost felt like I was playing it on Windows, except that certain features that require the Xbox game overlay (such as viewing an online player's gamercard) will not work.
gamescope -w 2560 -h 1440 -W 3840 -H 2160 -F fsr -f --hdr-enabled -- %command%
Running the game with gamescope fixes the issue of being unable to Alt-Tab out of the game.
Certain interactive elements in the game (such as viewing a player's card or inviting someone to a convoy) seem to require the Xbox app/game bar, which of course won't work on Linux. However, it's still possible to play with friends in a convoy by following these steps:
- The player hosting the convoy must start the game and create the convoy first (for some reason, if the host starts the game after you do, joining the convoy doesn't work sometimes).
- The host must allow friends to join the convoy.
- You can then go to "Online" and select "Horizon Life" (if you're in Horizon Solo), and you will then get a prompt asking you whether you'd like to join your friend's convoy.
The launch options that I've specified are only required to enable HDR support and to upscale the game from 1440p to 4k with AMD FSR (since I have a 4k display but a 1440p GPU), and to fix the Alt-Tab bug. It's possible to play the game mostly well without these launch options.
Works out of the box, with just a few annoyances with the Rockstar Games Launcher and Social Club now and then
mangohud gamemoderun gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -f -r 60 -o 30 %command%
The Rockstar Games Launcher sometimes takes time to connect to Social Club on launching the game. Apart from this, the only other bugs I've encountered are the ones inherent to the definitive edition across all platforms.
NOTE: The specified launch options are completely optional.
mangohud gamemoderun gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -f -r 60 -o 30 %command%
On first launch, the Rockstar Games Launcher said that it could not find cloud saves in my account. However, once the game launched my cloud saves were intact since the last time I played the game on Windows.
The game only recognized 3GB out of the 12GB of VRAM that my GPU has. To fix this, I had to create a file named commandline.txt
in the game's folder (Manage > Browse local files > GTAIV > commandline.txt) and add the following content to it:
-nomemrestrict
-norestrictions
-availablevidmem 12288
Note however that this issue isn't specific to Proton/Linux, and its a known bug that affects the game on Windows as well (ref: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Grand_Theft_Auto_IV).
Works perfectly out of the box (Proton Experimental)
After playing for many hours at a stretch (5+ hours), the game would sometimes freeze (audio would still play). This was fixed by simply Alt + Tabbing out of the game and then switching back to the game. This happened to me only twice, however.
mangohud gamemoderun gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -f -r 60 -o 30 %command%
GTA Online works out of the box with no issues
On first launch, the Rockstar Games launcher installation began and completed with no issues. After that however, it prompted me to manually login as it couldn't autologin. Once I manually logged in, the launcher said that it could not launch the game, and suggested that I check the integrity of the game files.
However, once the launcher closed, Steam still showed the game as running, and it stated that it was running DirectX installation scripts. Once that was done, it proceeded with processing Vulkan shaders, which took quite a while to complete.
Once Vulkan shaders were processed, Rockstar Games launcher popped up again, prompted if I wanted to enable cloud saves, and then launched the game normally.
mangohud gamemoderun gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -f -r 60 -o 30 %command%
- The game defaulted to the "Low" graphics preset. However, even after manually switching to the "Ultra" preset and restarting the game, the game still seems to be running the "Low" preset (the settings menu shows "Ultra", but in-game, everything seems low-poly).
- On the title screen, the wallpaper/background looks pixellated/low-res, and the Halo logo has jagged white edges.
All single-player campaigns work perfectly out of the box (with anti-cheat disabled).
Minor artifacts (blueish-green lines on certain open terrain maps) noticed in Halo 3 and Halo Reach. Additionally, certain characters get shadowed (completely black) in some cutscenes in Halo Reach and Halo 4. However, I'm not sure if this is a Proton specific issue (as I've seen many complaints about graphical issues and missing textures on Halo MCC even on Windows)
A total of 2 crashes in over 30 hours of play (1 crash in Halo Reach and 1 crash in Halo 4).
gamemoderun gamescope -e -W 3840 -H 2160 -f -- %command%
The game froze for me a total of 2 times. The first time, it unfroze after around 20-30 seconds. The second time, the game stayed frozen for around a minute or two, and then crashed entirely.
Screenshots taken through Steam appear corrupted. I'm not sure if this is due to running the game through gamescope (although I haven't faced this in any other game with gamescope).
mangohud gamemoderun gamescope -w 2560 -h 1440 -W 3840 -H 2160 -F fsr -f -- %command%
Running the game through gamescope fixes being unable to Alt-Tab out of the game.
mangohud gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -f -r 60 -o 30 %command%
This was easily fixed by adding gamescope
to the launch options
Performance feels native. The only issue I'd faced was with Alt-Tabbing out of the game, where the game would re-grab focus if I didn't have gamescope enabled in launch options.
mangohud gamemoderun gamescope -W 3840 -H 2160 -f -- %command%
Running the game through gamescope fixes being unable to Alt-Tab out of the game.
gamemoderun gamescope -e -W 3840 -H 2160 -f -- %command%
Both the demo and the main game run out of the box like a native game, with no visible performance loss or issues.
mangohud gamemoderun gamescope -W 3840 -H 2160 -f -- %command%
Running the game with gamescope fixes being unable to Alt+Tab out of the game
When I accidentally select the "DLC Available" banner/ad at the bottom of the phone menu (pause screen), the game seems to no longer respond to input. I haven't found a way to fix this apart from reopening the game
Apart from what's stated above, the game pretty much runs like a native game
gamemoderun gamescope -W 3840 -H 2160 -f -- %command%
Certain controller glyphs weren't displayed correctly or were missing. For example, the tutorial for driving doesn't display the glyph for the left and right triggers (just a blank space), and the tutorial for sneaking displayed L3 instead of R3.
Apart from a minor issue with incorrect controller glyphs, I haven't faced any issues with playing the game.
With newer versions of Proton, the game either fails to launch, or launches and then crashes when trying to start an online/offline game
mangohud gamemoderun gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -f -r 60 -o 30 %command%
I'm playing the game with graphics set to ultra, and I'm getting between 55-80 FPS (with VSync turned off). While this is more than enough for a smooth experience, I typically get much higher FPS on my system with more demanding games running with graphics set to ultra (Eg: Forza Horizon 5, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, etc.). Additionally, MangoHud also reported my GPU throttling now and then. I've not seen this happen with any of my other games.
Everything seems to be working as expected. Didn't really feel like a non-native game. NOTE: The launch options I've specified are completely optional.
gamemoderun %command%
For some reason, the game defaults to windowed borderless mode for fullscreen. I was able to change it to exclusive fullscreen in the settings, but the screen suddenly flickers and it changes back to windowed borderless after a few seconds (especially if I Alt+Tabbed). No major issues, however.
The first time I installed and launched the game, it launched, but had jarring static audio playing that wouldn't go away until I force quit the game. This happened every subsequent time I launched it as well.
Additionally, each time I tried launching the game after that, I'd get an error that the game files were corrupted. I'd have to verify the integrity of the files for it to get fixed each time. Needless to say, it was unplayable this way.
I completely uninstalled the game and reinstalled it again, and it seems to work perfectly now.
Works really well out of the box
When logging in, the game may ask you to set your date of birth (in the case of a new account). When you click "Set date of birth", it may seem like nothing happened in the game. However, Alt + Tab out of the game and you should see the Runescape website open in your default browser with the option to set your date of birth. Once you do this, the website will try and fail to redirect you to the game. In this case, just restart the game and login and it should work.
Works perfectly out of the box. I didn't have to tinker with anything to get the game running.
gamemoderun gamescope -W 3840 -H 2160 -f -- %command%
Works basically like a native game right out of the box. The launch options I've specified are purely optional, and I'm just using them to ensure my controller still works in-game when I move focus of my mouse pointer to a different screen.
gamemoderun gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -f -r 60 -o 30 %command%
Without the specified launch options, I faced a weird issue where the game launched into a white screen (with game audio audible), and then my entire system froze after around 10 seconds. 5 seconds post that, my display went blank (monitor reported no signal), but some music I had playing in my browser continued playing. A hard reboot was required.
mangohud gamemoderun gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -f -r 60 -o 30 %command%
The game works out of the box. However, I found slightly better performance and reliability with the specified launch options.
gamemoderun gamescope -e -W 3840 -H 2160 -f -- %command%
Nothing much to say, really. Plays like a native game out of the box.
mangohud gamemoderun gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -f -r 60 -o 30 %command%
I've experienced this on Windows as well, so it seems to be an issue inherent to the game.
FPS fluctuates between 41-60FPS. Doesn't stay at a constant ~60FPS.
Online multiplayer worked perfectly without any issues.
The specified launch options are not required to play the game. I just typically use them for all my games.
mangohud gamemoderun gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -f -r 60 -o 30 %command%
Sound cuts out now and then (very infrequently) for a few seconds. Not sure if this an issue with the game itself, or if it's specific to Proton.
The specified launch options are completely optional and are not required to play the game
mangohud gamemoderun gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -f -r 60 -o 30 %command%
The specified launch options are completely optional and can be left out.
gamemoderun gamescope -W 3840 -H 2160 -f -- %command%
Works like a native game right out of the box
mangohud gamemoderun gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -f -r 60 -o 30 %command%
Works perfectly out of the box
No bugs (apart from the ones inherently in the game, that also affect Windows)
Works flawlessly out of the box
I haven't faced any issues as of yet, and didn't have to configure anything to start playing. The only minor issue I'd noticed is that processing vulkan shaders before launching the game sometimes takes quite long.
Works perfectly out of the box
One time when I locked my screen with the game paused and then unlocked my screen later, the Y button on my gamepad stopped being picked up in the game. This only happened once however, and was fixed by simply restarting the game.
gamemoderun gamescope -W 1920 -H 1080 -f -r 60 -o 30 %command%
The game should probably also run well without the specified launch options. The specified launch options are just what I generally use for all my games on Wayland.
gamemoderun gamescope -e -W 3840 -H 2160 -f -- %command%
The game does seem to crash quite often, but every single time it crashed for me was when I was doing something on the main menu. I've so far yet to face a crash during an actual match.
Apart from the quite frequent crashes when in the main menu, the game itself works quite well. Online matches also work without issues.
Works out of the box with Proton 6.3.7
The game crashes when trying to scroll down the list of notifications on the home screen.
Offline:
Offline play works as expected out of the box.
Online:
So far, I've played 5 online matches (without tinkering with anything).
- All 5 matches were in a friendly lobby with a close friend (who also runs the same distro as me).
- The first match failed to start once it had reached the stadium overview screen, if that's the right term. It stated that the opponent's network connection had severely deteriorated.
- The remaining 4 matches worked perfectly from start to finish.
