Works out of the box, no issues
Completed the game without having any issues.
Sometimes the whole image is turning black for a fraction of a second, but it's possible that this is due the game displaying on my TV @50Hz instead of 60
Mouse behaves strange in main menu, it moves down when clicking
A pretty solid 50fps on high settings, using gamemoderun %command%
. Rarely drops down into the 40's.
Requires proton experimental at time of this writing, otherwise the game will start into a black screen.
protontricks 718850 dotnet472
The launcher will work exactly once, upon next launch it is broken. Install dotnet427 with protontricks to fix this.
Launcher works, clicking play does nothing
Tried proton versions from 5.0-9 back to 3.16-9 plus 5.11-GE-2-MF, they all don't work. Also tried to rename BSG.exe to autorun.exe and BSG_Data to autorun_Data, to bypass the launcher, but doesn't work as well.
Loading the game takes a while. Cannot be helped.
Cannot install addons from the ingame store, it will give an server error.
When you plan to use BepInEx for mods, don't forget to set an override for winhttp.dll: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winhttp=n,b" RADV_PERFTEST=aco %command%
Sybaris (through BepInEx) as well as BepInEx mods do work.
If you plan to use mods in VR, make sure to remove the MultipleMaids plugin if you have it installed. It will break VR.
Starting Tutorial crashes my desktop
Tried with default SteamPlay and GE-6.9-2
Cannot get past initial logo screen, even after a lots of fiddling
At best it only starts to the initial logo screen, then gets stuck. Tried with GE, Proton and default WINE, installed the DotNet stuff (you almost know you're into trouble if something insists on DotNet) and various Proton Flags. With "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1" at least it starts and shows the logo screen, without it will not even start.
With latest Mesa and Proton experimental it works pretty much flawlessly
Alt-Tab only works in fullscreen mode, not in windowed nor borderless windowed.
There were major audio issues but yesterdays update of Proton Experimental fixed that. It's not perfect, but so much better - radio, ambient sounds, npc voices now do play. Overall performance is very good for me at 1080p Ultra (45-60+ fps)
Works flawlessly
The old problem with keys not responding anymore after ALT+Tab is gone, now everything works perfectly.
Works out of the box
Sometimes the NPCs audio line is missing, but it very likely is a problem with the game itself, not Proton.
When using default Proton and DX12, there were glitches on at least the players clothes. These are not there when using DX11 or Proton Experimental.
Very stable 60fps on highest settings, both in DX11 and DX12.
Works really well, both in proton and native. Only minor issues.
Not sure if it's the game, but it appears to me that sounds are missing and sometimes not playing at all.
In native version, items held in hands (tools, stones, ...) are at top of screen and upside-down.
When playing using proton, opening the browser, which you need from time to time, does not work. When using the native version this is not a problem, but the tools held in hand are upside down and the highlighting of targets you look at are missing.
From time to time I need to delete the shader cache after an update. If performance suddenly tanks badly after entering the game or it does weird things like freeze your desktop, try this and things will be back to normal.
env radv_zero_vram=true %command%
Without "radv_zero_vram=true %command%" it will crash the gpu driver when loading a world 100%, requiring full reboot.
With the fix for the 7900XTX applied, it works pretty well. Without, it's a desaster.
Super fluid gameplay while being heavily modded and using FO4SE launcher + ENB. Only minor tweaks required. Just awesome.
Run with: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 %command% Apply mousefix in Fallout configs (google "Fallout4 bBackgroundMouse")
Needs to be launched with: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 %command%
Mouse jumps, needs fix in Fallout config "bBackgroundMouse=1"
I try to get this to run in an acceptable way for years now, this is the best experience by far. Unfortunately mod management, which is out of scope here, is a different beast.
protontricks 1151340 faudio
Atom-Shop does not work
Initially screen resolution was set to wrong size, easy to fix. Requires faudio to have music/sound. Atom-Shop does unfortunately not work. Needed older version of Proton to make it run, won't work with the recent Proton versions for me. Did not try creating a character, as I already had one. I can run it at max settings at a pretty good framerate (for a Bethesda game that is).
Mesa and seemingly Intel drivers will crash due to errors in the game shaders. These will be fixed in an upcoming update of the game. Until then, patch the game files using the script by MadByteDE (see github link). This will also install vcrun2017 to fix the problems with the localization strings. If the game still crashes after the loading bar, rename the "localisation/en/AchievementsVDF.vdf" file, start the game once, and rename the file back to default.
Works flawlessly out of the box
It's pretty demanding on the GPU, but overall good fps on highest quality at 1080p
Sometimes when starting the game the screen is just black or flickering. Switching proton versions around between 6.3-6 and a recent GE version sometimes fixes it.
After a couple of minutes of playing, it will freeze, render garbage to one of my other monitors and plain crash my X (or wayland) session. Looking at the discussions on steam, it seems to be an issue with the game renderer.
Loading a save game will immediately freeze and crash my X session
It will crash X after a couple of minutes
Black screen or flickering when starting the game. Switching proton versions sometimes fixes it.
Works out of the box
Max details, 1080p@60Hz, Vsync, stable 60 fps
Limit to 30 fps
Initial small text, fixed with one of the updates where you can scale the text
Only sometimes, most of the times it's okay
On rare occasions, when you push the graphics too high, you will run into memory issues which can freeze the game
Finished the (main) game in 118h on the deck, so very much playable. But don't expect stable 30 fps if you don't want to compromise too much on graphics. Even with lower settings it's still a beautiful game, though.
Works out of the box, just use DX12+FSR or DX11
Using DX12 it's practically unplayable on HIGH without using FSR. On DX11 it's playable.
Intro video stutters a bit, but who cares. Tested with standard Proton and Proton Experimental.
AMD_VULKAN_ICD=AMDVLK VK_DRIVER_FILES=/etc/vulkan/icd.d/amd_icd64.json %command%
On Mesa graphics are bugged, missing textures, etc. On AMDVLK, everything is fine
On Mesa the mouse cursor tends to be visible in the center of the screen, not an issue with AMDVLK
Performance is excellent, on "Gigantic" right now with stable 60fps on 1080p
When switching back from desktop to the game, it sometimes needs a couple of tries to get the game window focused again. Just keep clicking the game tab in the taskbar. Very likely a proton issue.
Right now it requires the latest beta branch of Proton 5.0 - right click Proton 5.0 in your library and switch to the "-next" beta branch.
AMD users need to use ACO instead of the default LLVM or they experience everything being black but the GUI ingame:
RADV_PERFTEST=aco %command%
Does not work for me with current Proton (5.0-6), only with 4.11-13, but then it works flawlessly with excellent performance. Requires PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%, otherwise it gets stuck at a black screen.
Mixed. No audio is bad, but besides that it works really well and is fun to play.
No audio at all, neither with SteamPlay nor Proton 5.0-9 nor 5.9-GE-6-ST nor 5.11-GE-3-MF
Mouse lags a bit in the menus. Not really noticeable outside of menus though.Feels like having mouse acceleration activated with quite a low value.
At the Ultra Quality setting it's pretty demanding, but on my hardware I'm able to maintain a stable 50 FPS (VSync enabled, though my refresh rate is 60Hz, not 50...).
Doesn't start at all. With providing two dlls, it launches, but immediately crashes.
When using PROTON_LOG=1 I could see that it fails to locate two dlls: srvcli.dll and netutils.dll. I've copied them from my old Windows7 installation, then at least a window is shown, but it closes almost immediately and the game terminates with a segfault.. Proton version doesn't matter, it's the same for all of them (including vanilla WINE and GE versions).
I'm using latest GE for a few videos here and there (intro and a very few tutorial videos). But you can perfectly skip that and use latest Proton (6.3-8) only.
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 %command%
On full details, there are some minor lag spikes now and then, which I did not experience on windows. But that is nothing that will ruin your fun at all.
The demo used to work, but the current beta crashes after Logo
I've tried several Proton versions, including Experimental and GE versions. All share the same problem - crash after Logo.
The game will start and present you with a black modal window and a blue button "Exit".
The issue might be that the game uses EAC, but not 100% sure if this is the main issue.
Works out of the box
Contrary to the demo where you had to install vcrun, the full version works out of the box
No issues at all while playing at max details in 1080p@60hz
No issues at all when using vulkan render path.
With default DX11 renderer, there is quite some stuttering. Using the Vulkan renderer, these are gone.
Works out of the box
I had no issues with alt+tabbing, everything works fine with stock proton. VR works well too (Index)
Requires lots of try & error, then fails when starting new game
Even with all the hints below and lots of fiddling, at best I could get to the point where I can start a new game. It then would throw one out of multiple errors. Needed to use the "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1" flag or it wouldn't even start.. I gave up on this for now.
https://github.com/Linux74656/SpaceEngineersLinuxPatches/
or the workarounds described in the other comments, mainly:
- make sure your winetricks is up to date (sudo winetricks --self-update)
- make sure you start with a fresh proton prefix, delete any old (backup savegames, should you have some), start the game once, then do the protontricks stuff.
- protontricks 244850 dotnet472 vcrun2015 faudio d3dcompiler_47
- add <gcServer enabled="true" /> to Bin64/SpaceEngineers.exe.config
- maybe rename intro movie "KSH.wmv" in Content/Videos (did not try without renaming)
Escaping the window only works in windowed mode.
I can set everything in Graphics menu to "High", but as soon as I set "Grass density" greater than 0, it will freeze my system in Mission 2 or later (whenever there is a planet/moon involved), forcing a reboot..
I did not yet experience issues with setting Voxel quality to "High" - which is a reported cause of a hard freeze for AMD RX 5700 XT users.
Other issues:
For unknown reasons, the game only works when I start Steam using a terminal window. It won't work when I start Steam via my desktop shortcut.. (I have the same issue with CryoFall). I have no idea what's causing this, but others might have the same problem, so I mention it. Otherwise, when launching Steam using the desktop shortcut and then press "Play", it will show the splash infobox, then the game stops and the game button reverts to "Play".
Also, the game processes will not exit gracefully when quitting the game. I have to kill the game and wine processes manually.
d3dcompiler_47
Requires protontricks 495420 d3dcompiler_47, otherwise it will crash after the prologue.
Without switching to Experimental, it locked up when starting the first tutorial mission. After switching, everything went smoothly.
Needed to start with PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%. Otherwise there would be geometry missing, neither -force-opengl nor -force-glcore did fix it. Also I did use the experimental branch of Subnautica, to prevent the mouse issues.
With the fix mentioned I was able to play it at medium settings with an "okay" framerate (my system is rather weak, only 2GB VRAM) and all I've noticed was some small lighting artifacts on the water surface when looking upwards on daytime. Not really a problem, but not perfect, hence no gold rating.
Once it boots up, performance is excellent
Loading the game and transition to the menu back from a map and to a map can take a while at first. It seems to get better after a while. The first launch of the game took like forever, seeing only a black screen, no VR view but hearing background music. I was about to return the game, but then it suddenly booted up.
Freezes when logging in with a character
Tried with a couple of Proton Versions - Experimental, Hotfix, Umu, GE-9.15, Default. Always freezes when trying to log in with a character. Up to this point, it works well.
I've remapped some of the back buttons to things like running, close window, open build menu.
Text on computer terminals, that tell the story, are hard to read. Not a gamebreaker though.
Good battery life at high quality (stable 30fps) - about 4h.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1
Origin Thin Client does not install for me. I need to install manually, login once and after closing it I can then start the game from within steam.
WINEPREFIX=[...]/steamapps/compatdata/1222670/pfx "[...]/steamapps/common/Proton 5.0/dist/bin/wine64" "[...]/steamapps/common/The Sims 4/__Installer/Origin/redist/internal/OriginThinSetup.exe"
OriginThinSetup fails
When I hit play, it's doing a first time setup for "OriginThinSetup". The install window goes away and nothing happens. Have to kill the "steam link2ea" and the explorer.exe process. No matter how often I try, it just won't install this OriginThinSetup thingy.
Way too much hassle to get it running from within Steam, so not a good experience for the casual player.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1
- Make sure you have 32-bit vulkan libraries
- Need to point to a 32-bit Vulkan ICD Loader, example for *buntu: VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/radeon_icd.i386.json
- If no 32-bit ICD file exists, copy 64-bit one, rename it and adjust the contents
- Needed to install Origin manually using command line. Command like below, but point to installer in common instead of Origin.exe in compatdata.
- To launch the game in windowed, borderless mode, I did run it first, disabled vsync as described in a report below, then exited and started the Origin client from command line, so I could edit the launch options for this game within Origin: WINEPREFIX=/media/drive/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1237970/pfx /media/drive/steam/steamapps/common/Proton\ 5.0/dist/bin/wine /media/drive/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1237970/pfx/drive_c/Program\ Files\ (x86)/Origin/Origin.exe
- Enabling AO in video settings will crash the game
Alt+Tab in Fullscreen = Crash
On rare occasions, audio can stutter for a while after resuming. Only happened once so far.
Battery lasts about 4h
Will crash when booting up if using a 8.x Proton or similar GE version.
Crashes with default Proton 8.x. Will also crash when exiting the game even with Proton 7.0-6, but that's a minor issue.
