Tested with GE-Proton9-2 & Proton 9.0-3, both worked well and ran stable without any launch commands.

Black screen, no main menu
Does not work, just shows a black screen. Fixes in other comments only made it worse for me.

Release Version of the game does not work anymore with proton
I tried Experimental Branch, Proton 6.21-GE-2, Proton 6.3-7, Proton 5.13-6b. Main Menu works fine. If you hit play button the game crashes.
Screen flickering on load
Multiple proton versions tried (6.3-6, Experimental, 6.16-GE1, 5.13-6). Game will load, however graphics flicker constantly and rapidly. Tried various graphics settings in-game to resolve, but none seemed to have any obvious effects, even after closing and reopening game.

Sometimes when starting the game the screen is just black or flickering. Switching proton versions around between 6.3-6 and a recent GE version sometimes fixes it.
After a couple of minutes of playing, it will freeze, render garbage to one of my other monitors and plain crash my X (or wayland) session. Looking at the discussions on steam, it seems to be an issue with the game renderer.

Unplayable flickering
Tried various proton versions, but the entire screen flickers rapidly in all of them, making it unplayable.
Crashing X is a big no-no.
When zooming out, the game slows to a crawl.
After playing for a few minutes, the game crashes X and logs me out.
When starting the game, it often gives just a black screen with music. This is less common with newer versions of Proton and with the beta branch of the game.

I tried other proton versions : with 5.13-6 : black screen with music and cursor also, but the menu is clickable : I am able to click and even open some links in my browser.
With 6.3-5 (and proton experimental from today) : the menu shows, but graphical artefacts, a lot of flickering. Stopping the game does not stop the display corruption, I had to change to another graphical console (ctrl+alt+F1) and back.
It runs out of the box with 6.3-5.
I experienced a few things in game control that looked like bugs, but I can't put ot pn proton, maybe early access bugs?

Offset and hid the menu
Might have worked if the menu on the right wasn't offscreen for me.
No Problems, no tweaks like mfinstall needed. Maybe newest version of game does it ...
Doesn't even run on any Proton Version.
I tried all possible Proton Versions and the maximum I achieved is a message that says "Steam Connection Failed: You must run "Hammerting" via the Steam Client, shutting down application..."
Generally, game doesn't work. It can launch, you can reach main menu and start the game, but after some time GPU will fail horribly and you will have to restart your PC. Generally, on 1 successful launch of the game you have to restart it 10 times, because it will give you black screen with background audio, or heavy visual artifacts. mf-install also didn't help me with that game, so I had to install it on windows..

Worked out of the box with Proton 5.13
Works fine in fullscreen, windowed mode didnt allow me to move the window and as a consequence the bottom and left sides were cropped off my screen.

First attempt all of the graphics flickered, second attempt black screen, third attempt seemed fine until there was heavy artifacting once in-game.
Crashed the entire GPU driver (ring 0) after around 30 seconds ingame. Repeated a few times just to make sure it wasn't a fluke. The driver shouldn't be crashing so this is probably a driver issue but it's still pretty undesirable.
