Works with Proton 9.0-4
Works well after clicking to use the Proton 9.0-4 compatibility layer.
Works really well as is with newest Proton.

Works perfectly out of the box
Played a tutorial mission and watched a video cutscene.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Tried loads of different versions of Proton - 6.3.8 was most stable but had to include the PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% launch option. Previous attempts resulted in a black screen, mouse and audio playing but nothing else. Steam Support had nothing to add saying it wasn't whitelisted. This solution works for me.

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Launcher appeared but would disappear and re-appear when launching the game. (Game would not start). Fixed it by using launch parameters: PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%

Launcher opens, click play and a small progress bar appears, launcher appears again.
Cannot play at all.
With Proton 7.0-3 I had a more stable experience, which was good enough to play through the game, but far from perfect.
Despite Proton 7.0-3 being much more stable, it still resulted in the occasional crash.
Upon completing the final mission, right when the ending movie is supposed to play, the game freezes. This happened to me twice, so I ended up having to watch the ending on Youtube.
At the advise of a report below, I compiled Proton 7.0-3 myself and had a better experience with it. The game remains somewhat unstable though, and I wasn't able to view the ending. Also, the game has a little launcher that's somewhat annoying to deal with.
Unfortunately impossible to recommend in this state, as it crashes every 5-10 minutes.
The game crashes about every 5-10 minutes.
I tried running the game with both Proton 7.0-6 and Experimental, and in both cases the game crashed so frequently that it was basically impossible to play. I'll hopefully come back to experiment further later, but as an out-of-the-box experience this is impossible to recommend.
Some in-game texts are hard to read.
Game plays with stable FPS, but sometimes it crashes after missions for me. Controls needs a bit of tinkering. (at least for me, it was horrible)
Fairly stable on 7.0-3. Crashes every once in a while, but workable as long as you save every turn.
Cutscenes are upside down
Currently, initiating a campain with Steam's recommended protondb version causes a crash. Switching to an older version, 7.0-3 in this case, seemed to work just fine.
Forced 40hz, 40FPS with steam overlay. Manul TDP to 8watt and manual GPU clock @ 1k gives 4hrs of battery with 800p+ultra setting
Only non-game related text (ad for the dev's other games on main menu) is hard to read. Everything else gameplay related text can be read fine.
Video cutscenes all play upside down when using Proton experimental. It outright won't play when forcing any other version of proton less than 7.0.3
Finished a mission without issues
Works out-of-box
Played with Proton 6.3-8.
Game is working great out of the box with no issues. Keyboard and Mouse controls are fine.
Occasionally, audio falls out of sync but the issue fixes itself shortly after.

Using Protonup helps this game immensely
as below
No matter if on low, medium or high settings the fps stayed at 1fps. Issue resolved however as after VSync was switched off consequent frame rate increased from 1fps to 250-320fps.
Install and Play. No Drama - all good.

OOTB no issues
When through the tutorial.
Works out of the box on my laptop with the "High" preset. The savegame was synced from my Windows PC so i could continue to play on the go.
It works very well in single player mode. Only the cinematics don't work.
Movies don't work, you have to resort to the old trick of mf-install https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install then after that it works great.
Even if you don't use mf-install, when it would be playing the movies you just press ESC and everything else works. I am playing it with the Steam Controller via sc-controller. Bought the game with all DLCs.

Other than the cut-scene videos, everything seemed to work great out of the box.
The video cut-scenes still do not work, but can be easily by-passed.

Runs very well. Will have a great game experience if you can forgive a lack of cutscenes.
5.11-GE-3-MF GloriousEggroll GloriousEggroll
Cutscenes not working. Just shows a black screen, skippable with ESC button.
Tried several versions of Proton. Stopped at 5.11-GE-3-MF GloriousEggroll.
Tried to use mf-install to fix cutscenes but it just made things worse. After installing mf-install game just crashes after cutscene start.

5.9-GE-3-ST GloriousEggroll
The AutoCam recording feature (which saves mp4 videos of completed battles) does not work.

Launcher works, clicking play does nothing
Tried proton versions from 5.0-9 back to 3.16-9 plus 5.11-GE-2-MF, they all don't work. Also tried to rename BSG.exe to autorun.exe and BSG_Data to autorun_Data, to bypass the launcher, but doesn't work as well.

Proton-5.11-GE-2-MF GloriousEggroll
plays out of box

Launches on Proton 4.2-9
I can get to the menu screen but he background is black instead of the camera panning around the orbital space station. Videos dont play. You can play campaign through the menus but you cannot see any ships due to the black background. Sound plays ok however. I
m sure with an amendment to the graphic driver it will work fine. I have tried adding DX9VK workaround but that doesn`t help. (Think it needs DX11 to display correctly)

PLEASE HELP!!
Same with this game. I managed to install and play this game on ULTRA Settings then my computer crashed due to a MESA graphic driver update. I had to reinstall Ubuntu and Steam, consequently the boot menu appears but then fails to prepare the game for initial boot. Can ANYONE HELP??
All but intro videos play - screen just black did not proceed until I hit 'Esc'. Then the game proceeded to the war room/deck. Proton 4.11-7

Videos don't play

Played a few missions without any issues without any work rounds.

Played a skirmish and a few campaign mission, runs exactly the same as in Windows 10.

Didn't notice any problems

Works without tweaks, but occasionally crashes mid-battle when window focus changes (such as alt-tabbing, getting desktop notifications) and the launcher window has display issues when dragged.

runs perfectly

I continued the campaign from where I left off on my Windows 10 machine. The only issue I had was when using free-look with the right mouse button. When releasing the right mouse button the camera would suddenly start moving on its own. Moving the mouse around would stop it.
