slight to moderate Graphic tearing
Game does not run on default, experimental or GE 20. I had to revert to an older version
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=50 %command%
For those running KDE Plasma 6 (Wayland):
- sudo pacman -S switcheroo-control
- sudo systemctl enable --now switcheroo-control
Right-click on the games icon > Edit application > Application tab > Advanced Options > Check "run using dedicated graphics".
In Game setting changes:
- Fullscreen @ 1080p
- Set FOV to 120
Without the PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=50 %command% in the launch options, I experienced audio crackling, but this command resolved the issue. Furthermore, my integrated GPU could not efficiently handle the game but was being prioritized, preventing the dedicated GPU from engaging. Installing Switcheroo and forcing the use of the dedicated GPU, along with additional in-game setting changes, provided a stable 50-60 FPS, preventing the game from dropping to 12 FPS until a relaunch.
Interestingly, increasing the Field of View (FOV) significantly improved the FPS performance.
Everything works perfectly.
Game runs fine!
Played a few hours coop and the game run just fine with zero issues encountered during that playtime.
%command% -dx12
Changed steam proton version to experimental and ran perfectly, default proton version did not work.
Menu runs well, cannot load into game -- immediately crashes
"Play Icarus (DX11) or (DX12)" choice in Steam seems broken, game always runs DX11. Running with -DX12 launch option fixes this.
-DX12
Play with -DX12 for an equal if not better framerate and frametimes than on Windows.
PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 %command%
Great building / survival game where the terraformed world is more dangerous than expected
During initialization the music played for a short while then stopped.
At one point the graphics started to stutter but returned to normal
Only the music in the loading video and the video where they show a 3D model rotating were bad. Game play was fine and no fatal problems encountered.
I only choose Start Icarus DX12 (Standard start question of the game)
Works without any clitches
Causes system to hang after your droppod/ship lands and would open.
Tried both DX11 and DX12 launch options, both performed the same and got no further. This game does run just fine at the high graphics preset on Windows 11 with this system, so maybe it's driver or vulkan related?
very laggy on default settings, switched to medium preset
It's playable, but the performance decline requires periodic restarts and limits session time.
PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 gamemoderun MANGOHUD=1 %command%
Performance slowly degrades as gameplay session progresses.
Currently it performs vastly better than it did on launch, however it's not quite on par with the Windows experience yet.

Sometimes the game boot and you taskbar remains visible mostly following a reboot after crash
Frames Dropping even though i get 80-110FPS easy
Yes, but mostly XWayland will sometimes crash before the game
I'll be willing to retry other options i look at this page often if you had something similar and you figured it out post a review with your settings. As of now all the people's "working" options haven't for me.
After not playing this Game on Windows for a while, i think the Performance is similar/better on Linux (at least for my PC)
As said, there are significant performance issues. The game seems barely playable
Only noticeable when graphic settings where greater than "low"
shadows on low are horrendous. the game itself will seem blurry.
All graphics performance on low, the game's FPS drops to 9-10 after a while (≃ 15 minutes
I do not have the latest graphics card but can play most games at least on medium settings in 1080p.
I had to install Visual C++ but then it worked fine, I think that it's running even better than on Windows (with a lot less sttutering).
Works perfectly in multiplayer out of the box
At specific times the frame rate dropped a bit. Always at sunrise in the day cycle the frame rate dropped from ~90 to ~50 but only a one or two minutes until "the sun was up". As I only played the game on Linux and not on Windows yet, I cannot say if this is a Linux or a game/hardware problem.
Everything worked perfectly fine. We played a few hours on a private dedicated server without any issues at all.

/home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1149460/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Local/Icarus/Saved/Config/WindowsNoEditor/GameUserSettings.ini and change framerate to 40.
Text is small but readable as long as you are not visualy impired to much.
There is some audio tearing once in a while
Run it in Borderless for better performance
After Major Tinkering there is still frame stutters when loading in intense areas late game or caves.
-Use Proton GE (I used 9.0-1)
-Install cryoutilities (this game needs lots of vram so the stock steamdeck swap config is not good enough): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7_vO_ttY5E&t=209s https://pimylifeup.com/steam-deck-cryoutilities/
-Limit the Refresh rate of the steam deck to 30 or 40 https://gamerant.com/steam-deck-set-up-40-fps and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ul5Eql8LJu8
-Run the game and go into settings Select "Low" in the bottom right (Set Resolution scale to 75, Display mode to borderless)
-In Performance settings Overclock GPU to 1600MHz
The game is demanding, but I can play it on medium + FSR ON. Regarding linux support - everything works, including multiplayer.

Quality and Details need to be much lower than in Windows to achieve a comparable performance.
set common actions to back buttons.
Some text unreadable with FSR.
Require cryobytes and frame buffer resize. I went with 4 gb. Swappiness 1 was sufficient.
Game crashes around loading. CPU and GPU never hit stress levels, frame hovers around 30, then it freezes.
I tried base, the other reccomended, and experimental. I even tried the commands listed by others.
It used to run fine on medium settings, now I can't get it to run gameplay at all.

This game is quite a VRAM hog. My 10GB VRAM filled up quite fast, but it handled it quite well on the limit. Reduced texture pool size a bit to make it use around 9GB. 2560x1440, mostly high settings, DLSS Quality, DX11 option. framerate limit 120, foV 110. Game ran 120fps capped for the most time. Few drops down to 105 in places.
As noted, I needed to turn down the graphical settings but it still looks very good.
Had to turn the settings down a bit, but not too bad. It was a bit choppy on the auto-detected settings. Moved to medium, it was butter-smooth.
Plays well, solid FPS and no other significant bugs.
I spend many hours on thsi game, each week bugs are fixed and features added, all clearly explained in a changelog
PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=0 %command%
PLayed many hours as host and as guest without any problems
After the latest proton upgrade to 8.0-4 the game crashed without any boot options, after a very short mail exchange on github with the devs I managed to run the game as instructed with the option: 'PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=0 %command%'
PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command%
Lagged a little at the default graphics settings. Hit the reccomended settings and it lowered a lot.
Runs great. Some minor issues but they are private server issues.
Minimal fiddling required (old reports here are stale IMO), gets a solid 40fps (see below)
Limited to 40 fps in Steam game settings for better battery life
Some text is quite small but IMO still readable if you have good eyes (or you can use the Steam magnifier button)
I read the helpful prior reports here and I think with current (Aug 2023) Steam Deck/Proton GE not much fiddling is required. Instead of all those old options and tricky config, I did ** just ** the following and got great results. A solid 40fps (I didn't see if it would run faster).
Tinker steps needed:
- Use Proton GE (I used 8-6)
- Install cryoutilities (this game needs lots of ram so the stock steamdeck swap config is not good enough): https://retroresolve.com/how-to-install-and-set-up-cryoutilities-on-steam-deck/
- Use "icarus geek v1.1" community controller config.
- Run the game and go into settings
- Select "autosuggest" in the bottom right to have it pick video settings that are more optimal for the steamdeck.
- Use the suggested settings but increase "textures" to "medium". This will result in the game needing about 13GB RAM while running which is fine.
The only issue I see is that sometimes when choosing "quit to desktop" the app must be manually shutdown from steam (because it does not fully exit).
Unplayably slow unless you have boatloads of VRAM
Extremely low texture quality.
Unplayable framerate.
The only problems were performance, which is true in singleplayer as well.
This essentially does not work unless you have more than 8GB of VRAM. The Steam page says it should work with 6GB, so practically speaking, this is a Proton bug. If you want to try, turn all texture settings down to minimum; it helps for a few minutes but rapidly grinds to a halt again.
I fully expect this to be fixed eventually, but as of right now, it's a dead loss.
Yes, it is enjoyable. Although given the graphical issues your mileage may vary.
Odd blurring, low grade textures, general loss of sharpness. Appears to be rendered in a lower res and upscaled despite not using DLSS or similar.
I hope the graphical issues can be sorted for linux, an enjoyable games otherwise.
Does not launch
There's not much more to say at this point. I've tried forcing proton-experimental as well as the last 6 versions of proton with no success.
