Everything is fine besides the option menu
Alt+Enter
Trying to load an state crashes the game with a japanese text saying something like "Error?"
Everytime you want to change the aspect ratio/put a background/exit the game it shows the japanese text again.
The option menu is somewhat broken, it doesn't let you do basic actions such as exit your game or change the aspect ration of each game.
Everything besides is fine, still annoying though.
With some patches is perfectly playable, though it's rough to set up if you don't have the right information

Cutscenes are choppy and the audio doesn't match with the video frame, specially at long cutscenes because it looks like they're both separate entities and they are working on their own.
It doesn't detect my wireless controllers on older Proton versions, works on newer versions but the newer versions don't play video with that patch, so I stick with my keyboard which plays fine.
Videos Playback have been what's pushing some Atlus games back in Linux, the rest it's a totally fine experience. Same goes for Persona 4 Golden.
I switch to an older proton version because the newer ones were slow for me, turning Vsync off also helps to reduce input latency, even on controllers.
Works like Native
I got invaded as soon as i step on the forest of fallen giants. Everything works great!
Runs just like native with Vulkan
My specs were different before doing this review. I tested this game with an Nvidia GPU, but then my computer died beyond repair while playing this game, not linux fault of course, but my laptop's. Haven't been able to play this game again on that computer after that since it's dead. In other words, this is my experience before my old laptop died, which is great permormance with Vulkan.
One crash so far, not a big deal.
No problems, besides that one crash I had on a elevator on Chapter 5. It's perfect.
Mouse controllers are a bit of a mess. Altrough I played this game with a controller which is higly recommended.
3 or so crashes after completing the game.
Only 3 crashes through the whole campaign, it isn't really that bad really considering I had other programs open while playing, a controller and a couple of other stuffs.
Really good performance, even on a low-end device
No activation issues on 5.0 before playing the game. On 5.13 and after the activation screen/process doesn't show, it only shows the little windows that appears after the activation process.
Only problem with 5.13 and after is that the game crashes upon the openning with Nicole and it crashes the game shortly after rendering some graphics.
Tested with a Xbox One controller.
Works like charm, recommend the use of GMDX and OpenGL
Alt-Tab doesn't crash the game, however it doesn't change windows and it stays in the game one.
Couldn't save my game, it said I least need 100mb to save (from 7mb the game detected probably from the wineprefix it created)
Install GMDX like any windows executable with wine, it will detect your Steam folder, after the installation go to the game's root folder (steamapps/common/Deus Ex for Steam, but it works on any copy regardless were you obtained it) and rename GMDX.exe to DeusEx.exe to launch directly from Steam.
To solve the cache problem go to DeusEx.Ini in the System folder, search for "CacheSizeMeg" from 4 to 64.
Only random Stuttering
Minor missing textures during some in-game cutscenes. Nothing major though.
Stutters when you load a new location/map
Crashes when exiting the game, i haven't found a solution yet, i tried GE's proton as well, the same thing occurs
It's a good experience out of the box, just be aware of Stuttering
Don't try to mess with audio during gameplay, it leds to just not having audio at all. Solution is to restart the game. If you want to lower the audio during gameplay for example, try to only lower the in-game audio not the one on your computer. Audio works fine besides that.
Pre-render backgrounds don't work too well. In-game character models have weird transparency issues. On cutscenes this is totally fix.
Crashes during the first summons on older versions.
As I said in-game models and pre-render backgrounds don't work too well and the audio is tricky. FF X-2 works without any tinkering for me, althrough it has the same problems as with X.
So far, so good.
Audio sometimes doesn't start. Restarting the game seems to fix the issue.
In case you're using an Intel iGPU, use this https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/17209
FPS are really stable, no crashes as well. Strangely it runs better than New Vegas with the same settings.
Works great, altrough it needs the obvious tweeks to work properly in a modern fashion, like any Bethesda RPG
Compared to Fallout 3 this game runs somewhat slower, even with a couple of performance mods.
NVAC, same goes for Windows.
-NVAC. -4GB patch. -YUP. -Collision fixes. -NVSE. -Stutter remover.
Works like charm
You need to remap controllers. Menus don't detect controller imputs but its a general problem and races work as normal.
Runs well out of the box
Even while creating a very heavy object level, it did result in good permormance, probably better than WIndows.
A little less than Windows, still enjoyable if you have a good pc
Trees shadows often pop-up on the mountain side of the map.
Performance wasn't as consistent as Windows, little frame drops here in there during heavy scenes or world loading.
Had to download a external launcher that launches without Social Club because the game insisted that needed Social Club to boot up. Everything else works as expected. Online works too.
Doesn't work, it crashes with every proton version avaible
It doesn't go further the title screen even with fixes unlike Vice City and III that worked out of the box without headaches
Correction of my last report: Changing the game's path seems to fix the issue.
Just needed to press tab once the mouse dissapear and the game starts
I first installed this game on an external disk (HDD) and it didn't work, it crashed before the main menu. But once i move it to my local disk, it now works flawessly, even with mods. This is the only game that give me this issue since VC and III work on my external disk with no issue.
Audio tracks has been the cause I detected about on why the game crashes so often and it has been a regular since I started playing.
Some radio stations crashes the game on certain occasions. Prefer using bikes or service cars, or turn the radio off altogether.
Transitions can crash the game but they are mostly rare.
Not every station crashes though, once you put the radio you are ready to go, it's a set file looping so there is no problem there. Only when the audio starts playing it is the problem, there's a chance it will crash or not.
Tested on 3 computers so far on three different distros and the same result.
After 80+ hours of playing and troubleshooting, it's playable, even with mods.
Replace the audio with the original source, it seems Rockstar replaced the audio due to licensing issues but they did a really poor job at that, so the game crashes on certain radios because the game tries to play that song but it's missing for the very same reason.
Install Ginput (It worked perfectly with a Dualshock 3) https://www.gtagarage.com/mods/show.php?id=24272
D.E.P (Definitive Edition Project) is a modpack that includes lots of Q.O.L improving mods.
Download here: https://www.definitive-edition-project.com/sa-de.
In my case installing the whole mod crashes my computer after 5 minutes or so, you might want to try by yourself.
If your computer isn't good enough to run this mod properly, try installing mods individually, the ones that don't require changing textures for example.
Escensial mods:
Widescreen fix and Widescreen font.
SilentPatch.
Ginput.
Frame Vigilante.
SkyGFX.
Works well with mods, I had to use a old proton to make this game work
Install Ginput: https://www.gtagarage.com/mods/show.php?id=24272
It crashes after certain time
Insall SilentPatch, Widescreen Fix and Ginput, that is all you need.
I'm surprised how well this works, out of the box!
Finish the tutorial, then on the planet go to screen settings and choose fullscreen. It's more on the game side rather than Linux.
Prefer a Joystick, again this is not a problem with Proton. It's a recommendation. Since Keyboard works weird in this game.
Only had one minor crash in 6.3-8, moving to 5.13 and never had an issue since then, controllers work perfectly too.
Works out of the box with every proton version I tested
Tested on a Playstation 3 controller. No weird tweeks, just sit and play.
Doesn't start
Tried with every Proton version (including GE), neither Wine3D or DVK9 worked, changing the game's path didn't work either, using "-w" to start in window mode didn't work either. The screen appears for a flash of a second then quickly quits to desktop, I might have seen reports that said it's due to the lack of some important dll's files in the system, sadly I checked and everything was correct in the prefix. Every version of Proton ends in the same result, probably it can be related to my hardware but I can't tell.
Works like charm even for low specs
Haven't tested the first chapter of the game. The rest of the game plays as well as is on Windows, same goes for Ground Zeroes. Tested with a Dualshock 3.
If you move the cursor all the way to the left it might unfocus the game's fullscreen. It rarely happens and can be easily fix by just pressing (in my case) Mod4+F which is the fullscreen shortcut. It could be a issue with Windows Mannager/Sway not mannaging so well fullscreen games, i've seen plenty of example already.
Use Proton 5.13. Newer versions have issues with color deph, it's like 16-bit deph.
Out of the box
Megaman 8 cutscenes work flawessly since it's only emulation and doesn't depend on something else
No problems at all, performance is close to native.
The game can also read Playstation input, so if you have a Dualshock 3/4 it will change the icons, neat!
Works great
Some missing textures due to rendering issues with 5.13
Sometimes it crashes, very rarely
Use winecfg on protontricks to disable Winusb.dll in the prefix. Due to the lack of Gamecube controller the game crashes instantly.
5.13 has some rendering issues. Some missing textures in the menu, and stages. Nonetheless is still playable.
A bar tray opens every time there is a video. Just close it and resume the game. I believe it's because i have LAV filters on this game too so it might not be your problem
Intro video lags a bit. Nothing horrifyng
I'll tell you the steps i did:
First. Boot the game at least once. This creates a important folder for this proton fix.
Install Windows Media Player 9 via:
--protontricks 1113000 wmp9 quartz devenum
Install both LAV filters and K-Lite Codecs via
--protontricks 1113000 --gui then "Select the default prefix" and then "Run explorer" find the installer location for each program and you are done.
And for last run the game with PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 %.
-----------------[Not important]--------------------------
Advice. Do not skip steps. My first error is that is skipped totally on instaling the K-Lite Codecs and the intro video didn't play. So i had to do this all over again.
Another advice. Do not install too much stuff on this game, i'm refering to not test all the protons versions with this game.
Why you ask? Denuvo. It blocks your game for 24h, you can't do much about it.
It may be my case but it has happened for me like 3 time now under the same circumstances. And some other users have reported it too.
Anyways enjoy the game if you managed to fix it.
Finished the game after 70+ hour without problems.
The cursor doesn't dissapear automatically. That's pretty much were my problems end during gameplay.
To this date I still have to do the LAVFilters trick with 5.0. It is the only one that mannages to get video working properly.
Change the EXE, you need the one without DRM. First, run the game normally through Steam, then go to another desktop or hide the game. While it is running go Steam/steamapps/compatdata/3590/pfx/drive_c/ProgramData/PopCap Games/PlantsVsZombies and copy the EXE to your actual game directory; steamapps/Plants vs Zombies, delete the original game's EXE and just name it like the original.
Game drops down to 10fps in menus. remember to replace the EXE to fix it. 3D acceleration isn't necessary.
You probably could download the original PopCap EXE from the internet, but this is a safer way to do it.
Force to Windows 7 to make the Online work
In winetricks/protontricks force the Windows version to 7 to make the multiplayer work.
I'm just making my review from the new Nightdive source version. It works perfectly.
Works out of the box, even online multiplayer and a bluetooth controller
Stable 60fps and all around a perfect experience in Online Multiplayer, no crashes or anything weird
Perfect Experience, from start to end.
I've a screen saver on Wayland. It activates when I'm not doing anything. After unlocking the lock screen the game sometimes moves the window far bellow the screen, changing workspaces fixes this issue right away.
Some specific effects do slowdown performance a little bit. It isn't terrible though these moments are far between and are not very common.
Controllers work perfectly too, no crashes or anything weird whatsoever. 2 of my problems are just tied to my low-end hardware and WM which on a DE should never have these issues.
Missing sprites of several characters.
Fullscreen crashes the game.
Dualshock didn't work for me, tried it on Big Picture and no change.
The main menu is really slow.
On olders GPUs this game runs horribly. Use PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 to solve it. Althrought is a solution, it isn't perfect, menus will still be slow.
Older versions of proton also don't work and news seems to crash the game instantly.
Everytime i start the game i get a bunch of errors windows.
Other than that the game is playable, just not enjoyable at all.
Plays like Native, no tweeks needed
Same as SNK 50th Collection, works well out the box
Native doesn't work and proton is also kinda broken
Latest revisions of GE's Proton seems to work fine, althrough games have input delay on the room thingy. Launching with the Simple Launchers fixes the issue but it streches the screen. It works just be aware of those issues.
The screen shows a blue void while talking to the soul people, some particular zones like in Shibuya District and parts of the hospital. Basically zero visibility. But, it can be somewhat fixed using Wine3D, it shows a blurry dark image but you still can see a little.
Game sometimes starts like any other window in I3WM just not in Fullscreen, but it's rare and when it happens I just toggle fullscreen manually from my keyboard.
A minor detail, the cursor flickers bad.
Take in mind my hardware. 7.0 and up might have fix all of those issues, but my laptop it's not really capable of rendering properly, it lags like crazy.
Videos on 6.3.8 don't work, it doesn't really bother to me for now.
Everything else works perfectly; controllers, sound and performance.
Works Great if not perfect
I was also able to install the Dreamcast Conversion Mod at https://www.moddb.com/mods/sadx-dreamcast-conversion. (The auto mod installer works too)
Some slowness, but could be due to my old hardware and the mod combine.
I highly encourage to try this mod since fixes some of the issues present in the base game.
Works well with Proton Experimental, the rest refuse to boot up the launcher
The game is enjoyable from start to finish and it works just like native.
Tested with a PS3 controller.
Only performance problems and the initial broken sound that can be fix with a command, the rest is fine
FPS can get to 15 in my case
Use PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command% to fix it.
Really bad performance compared to Win 10.
Just like Native!
In level special music like Super Sonic theme can get out of sync of rare occasions
Newer versionns of proton wouldn't start for me, it was either a black screen or just not boot at all.
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="msacm32,msvfw32=n,b" %command%
In case you get "Steam Error, Application load error 2:0000065558." error, try installing it on your main drive. Every Proton version refuse to launch while it was installed on a external disk.
Videos and everything works as excepted.
Change the render in UT2004.ini to OpenGL. It works miles better than D3D.
At least Wayland with Sway has this problem on some very determinated games only seen with OpenGL (Serious Sam Native Build was that rareocassion) were the screen doesn't render properly. The mouse takes control over the screen position for some reason, and it's so tiny you barely see something. I believe it happens in i3wm, just haven't tested it yet.
A way to resolve this issue (at least for me) was to before opening the game, change to another empty desktop before it loads on first startup. This fixes the position the screen that it doesn't force itself to use a determinated width and height and instead forces it to use the entire screen since it's empty and it renders the game properly.
One last thing. I've seen some people mentioning error 0x02. A quick solution to ger rid out of this error is to install the game on your main drive instead of a external disk. Both Splinter Cell and Chaos Theory suffer from this issue too and the solution is the same one mentioned. (They are made in Unreal too).
Perfect. Select OpenGL during the installation of the game
Windows mannager have it rough when sizing some games. This is one of them but is not big deal, if you happen to screw up (like me) on first boot the screen and open the game in the same workspace that Steam is, the game screen most likely will be cut in half.
Quick Solution is to change to another workspace before the game boots. It will fix permanently so it's one in a time thing.
As with Unreal Tournament 2004, the game refuses to boot from an external disk for whatever reason resulting in error 0x02. Put it in your main drive and it should be good to go.
Runs surprisingly well on low end hardware, audio problems
Audio keeps crackling even after dissabling Esync. Sonic Generations also has this problem.
Only special sound effects get weird like in menus while selecting an option. Voices and music are save from this audio crackling. The rest is totally playable.
Just copy your libwavpack.so.1 file to the lib folder in the game to make the native version work as intended. It's a little silly.
From your /lib folder copy libwavpack.so.1 to the lib folder in the game. If you don't have that file, download it through your distro packages.
In the main menu the server it's not avaible or not working, but it is.
Played through 3 hours with a 4 player party. No problems whatsoever.
Can't say for sure if you need more libraries to make this game work on Native. In my case debugging Steam I found out I just needed this file. Probably they forgot to add it, so it's broken by default.
On any Proton version it only shows a black screen but the game works nonetheless, just with a black screen in top.
Works perfectly out of the box. SEGA logo doesn't sound at the beginning, but that's the only difference i notice.
Game slowndowns when you try to play around with the audio
