For some reason can't game isn't shown in the workspace when fullscreen. You can get back to it by minimizing all the other window though
When using any version above 5.0 the window taskbar is still appearing after going fullscreen. Try 5.0-10, there's still a bug where it isn't on the taskbar when you have it fullscreen though. To get back to the game you need to minimize all window.

The game starts without any problems

For whatever reason the game doesn't work with normal or GE proton, I got a black screen with the music playing and nothing else
Explored and walked around a little, runs like native out of the box.

Whenever i ran it with regular proton it would just show a blank black game window
Stuck in a tiny unplayable window. Could not fullscreen in game or with system buttons.
Save music is missing
timidity -iA -B2,8 -EFreverb=0 & %command%
MIDI audio missing
As mentioned in another review of this game, certain audio tracks will not play without setting up a MIDI audio synth. One of these tracks plays while your character is sitting at her desk (where you save the game) soI recommend booting the game up, saving, then quitting. After tinkering, you will be able to load the save file and know immediately if the audio worked.
For clarity, here's a simple guide to how I have this set up.
- Set up a username/password for your desk if you haven't already with
passwd
(in konsole) - Install timidity. I have made a script that does this for me, as everything in this step gets nuked when steamOS updates. Here's my script (feel free to modify if you've already done these steps elsewhere):
sudo steamos-readonly disable
sudo pacman-key --init
sudo pacman-key --populate archlinux
sudo pacman -S timidity++
echo "All Done!"
You can also just paste this into Konsole if u don't want to make a script. 3. Download the Default Windows MIDI Soundfont. You can find this on Google or whatever. Mine is called "gm.sf2" 4. Go to "/etc/timidity/timidity.cfg" and add this line at the end:
soundfont "/home/deck/whatever/wherever you put the file/gm.sf2"
- Go to Yume Nikki's launch options and add the launch options at the top of this review
Boot the game up, load your save file, you should hear music. :)
Works perfectly. No tinkering needed.
Runs perfectly OOTB.
The game runs with zero issues OOTB.

Inicio sin problemas. Lag en algunos mundos o lentitud en el desplazamientos del personaje. Jugable si a uno no le molesta lags esporádicos.
Cult Classic game workiing flawessly
No tinkering whatsoever
LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 %command%
Game works out of the box if played in english. Playing in japanese, however, requires
- Generate Japanese locale by running the following with sudo:
locale-gen ja_JP.UTF-8
- Setting up the following environment variable before launching the game:
LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8
Disfrutable aunque puede que algunas zonas se queden con un silencio incomodo
Algunas partes del juego no contienen audio, como la zona en donde puedes guardar la partida.
Game runs as it would natively.
Works on my desktop and laptop (also Mint 20.3) and runs much better than when Windows was installed on the laptop.
Works great. The only problem is that the MIDI audio does not play
MIDI audio does not play

Several things have to be addressed. I will elaborate below as the 140 character limit won't let me.
MIDI sounds not working due to Linux not having proper MIDI software synth built-in. Fix below
Game not centered in fullscreen. Fix below
D-Pad was not working despite Steam Controller settings being properly mapped. Fix below
- MIDI samples did not play (such as the one that plays when Madotsuki sits in her bedroom chair to save the game) due to Linux not having a software synthesizer in case you don't use a sound card with MIDI hardware synth built in (something so old most integrated soundcard manufacturers don't bother adding).
To add MIDI support into the game, do the following:
install Timidity
Copy the Default Windows MIDI Soundfont found at musical-artifacts.com into /usr/local/share/soundfonts/windows.sf2
Set the soundfont so timidity will use it, adding the line "soundfont /usr/local/share/soundfonts/windows.sf2" in /etc/timidity/timidity.cfg.
Then, in the game's Startup Options, set the following on startup: "timidity -iA -B2,8 -Os -EFreverb=0 & %command%" The game will take a bit to run, but hold on, it'll work with MIDI samples as well. I tested it with the MIDI bedroom track for several minutes and it worked fine.
- Addressing the complaint of the previous test, there is a fix for the fullscreen not being centered. Just do the following:
Start the game in Window mode (right click the game in your Steam Library, then click Window mode).
When the window shows up, press F5 to bring up the Graphical options menu.
Set the the Mode - F4 toggle to Fullscreen, and (most importantly) the Rendering Mode to GDI (for newer machines).
Then, the game should run in fullscreen and should be centered. For some reason, DirectDraw renders the game uncentered.
- D-pad mapping in my DualShock 3 (and presumably any other controller, since Steam Input doesn't care what controller you use) was not working despite being mapped correctly. What I did to address it was ugly, but it was quick and easy:
install qjoypad
map the d-pad buttons to the keyboard arrow keys
And that's how you make Yume Nikki fully playable, properly centered, with MIDI support and on a big TV played with a controller and on Linux.

Fullscreen not being centered is enough for me not to want to play
Gnome toolbar is still on top in fullscreen. Often, the game is not centered and is slid to the right in fullscreen mode and the steam overlay messages on the bottom right are cut off. I tried with different scaling settings in gnome with the same result even though the first time I launched it, it was centered. Running in big picture mode doesn't fix the gnome toolbar issue, instead the area where the toolbar would be is blank. Big picture mode also causes it to crash on launch pretty often.
D-Pad doesn't work, left analog is movement by default. Have to manually map the D-Pad probably.
If playing in Japanese, needs this line in launch options: "LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 %command%"

6.16-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
After Alt-Tab, KDE Task Manager (also called KDE Taskbar) always on top of screen
Testing result with different Proton version,
- Game won't run on "Proton-5.21-GE-1" and "Proton 5.13-6"
- Minor stability issue on "Proton 6.3-7"

Won't work
I press play and it says it's running but nothing happens and then after a few seconds it stops running :(
Everything works as intended
Runs without any issues on Proton 4.11-13, on Linux Mint 20.1.
Just works!

Does not launch
The game does not launch but I'm able to launch it with Wine.
Runs very well. YN is the RPGMaker game everyone should try playing; Linux shouldn't be the excuse to why you can't.
Playing the game while full screen is not recommended under SwayWM as the pop-out window may cause the game to look as though it is frozen after a while, with audio still playing. My guess is the settings window may capture input when it is not in focus after switching from the workspace, and the only way of exiting full screen is using the old trusty xkill. It may be a wlroots bug so further testing is needed.
I was having OLE errors like the other reports mentioned until I switched to Proton 5.13 and it's been mostly flawless since then. If there are any issues it is likely a bug in the window manager/compositor so be sure to try a different one.
out-of-the-box experience, problems with fullscreen on KDE, run in window
I cannot pass the block world, OLE error 40008001
When I go to the Block World, the game says OLE error 40008001. Progress is impossible from that point. All the other areas are fully playable.
Fullscreen issues can be easily overlooked, but not being able to progress past a certain point without errors is a big no.
Game doesn't launch unless run in windowed mode, although fullscreen mode can be toggled safely afterwards either by pressing Alt+Enter or manually changing the setting from the F5 menu.
I kept getting "OLE error 40008001" everytime I went from the Block World to The White Desert, so progressing was impossible for me past this point.
mpg123 and libmpg123 were already installed in my system and it made no difference.

It works.

Zero Issues. It works perfectly!!!
