It ran perfectly, as if it was ran on its native operating system which is windows.
Somehow broke my filesystem and prevented boot, and took me 2 days to fix it.
When processing Vulkan shaders, it became unresponsive, before the entire system was hanging, and after applying a forced shutdown, upon reboot, the file system the game was installed on got corrupted and prevented boot from happening (As where I put my Steam games was mounted at boot). So I had to go into the fstab/etc, remove the partition it was on from boot, delete the partition, which let me restart in Arch, and reformat the partition and reinstall my games
My love for this game was soured because of my experience, but other than that, runs smoothly for me at 1080p 120fps.
Artifacts could be gotten rid of by turnign off AA and motion blur but the text problem persists, still playable however.
gamemodeon %command%
Enabling motion blur and AA causes their own sets of unrelated artifacts. Text and the crosshair is also glitchy but legible. AA does not smooth the edges when enabled and causes black spots near the "seems" of the polygons. Motion blur causes "noisy" rectangles och darker lighitng in the distance.
I tried a bunch of other versions of proton and deleting the compat data and shader cache and so on but it did not improve things.
For native Linux support and a much larger variety of custom maps and mods than the remaster, I highly recommend using Luxtorpeda to download one of the many available source ports for the game. vkQuake is the best, and I recommend Ironwail as an alternative since it has a few extra QoL changes over vk albeit less capable scripting.

Doesn't run without launch options
The default option, "Play Quake", is the 2021... enhancement or what have you. Having never played the "original", I don't really need the 90's limitations. Runs at my native 3440x1440p (21:9) resolution at 240hz with zero issues.
Runs great out of the box!
No tinkering or adjustments needed. Looks and plays mooth from the start! You can make it even better by enabling gyro.
not marking GLQuake issues because most are here for the 2021 game
- Quake Enhanced (2021) just works.
- GLQuake [called Quake (original) in launch options] launches as a black screen, tabbing out and back in fixes this.
- Message/console text is invisible in GLQuake. Installing Windows fonts did not fix this.
- Winquake doesn't have any issues but lacks a launch option. If you want to play Classic Quake either rename Winquake.exe to glquake.exe or add it as a non-Steam game.
No issues
Perfect, even on my infirm laptop with intel HD520
Tested on Win11 and Linux, on my laptop and PC, With PROTON the game is super stable and even performed a bit better.
Perfect OTB.
I played mostly through the vkQuake source port, but the new(ish) remaster is honestly perfect for pretty much anyone.

Used Proton 7 for a while, and that worked. But I tried launching it without Proton one day, and it just kinda... worked? Really well, no less? I have not a single clue why. My guess is that it has something to do with me also installing a Quake Linux port from the software manager and feeding that app Steam Quake's file path? Either way, unadvertised native works phenomenally
Works out of the box
On rare occasions players were dropped and could only rejoin the match with room password, the Steam client invite stopped working for the remainder of the session.
The original campaign, the DLCs and the remaster all work absolutely fine in both single and co-op multiplayer.
Run out of the box. The Remaster fixed my previous issues.
Mostly ping issues, but that's probably my internet.
Should be Verified
Some crackling after putting to sleep and re-awakening
Works great and can run on low settings without sacrificing graphics.
Bethesda version crashes on launch. The original launches but only has black screen with only audio
Quake remaster works perfectly out of the box on default settings. GLQuake is still borked - it takes me to a black screen with sound.
Game once was launching perfectly. Not it does not want to launch at all.
gamemoderun %command%
Not so long ago. This game was running perfectly, on my system. Now, not matter what I tried. Reinstalling, veryfing game's files, resetting Steam or System. It does not want to launch. There's a black screen for a second, then it disappears, and Steam "stop" button, turns back to "play".

Runs Flawlessly
Had to switch to windowed
should be verified
does not back up to steam cloud.
no tinkering needed. runs great.
Runs perfectly
Set r_rhirenderfamily "vulkan"
in Id1/config.cfg
, running through dx11 makes it stuck on a black screen.
The (misleading) "original" version that still uses GL launches, but has graphical artifacts and movement does not work.
Main menu on "original" has heavy artifacts, rendering it unreadable.

No cross-OS saves
The game runs perfectly fine once changed the launch options; otherwise, it crashes on startup. My save files from Windows didn't synchronize.

No cross-OS saves
The game runs perfectly fine once changed the launch options. As of now, it can also be run natively, but it still crashes on startup if you don't modify your launch options. My save files from Windows didn't synchronize.
Always an awesome game on any system. I would highly suggest playing it if you haven't. Ran perfectly on Linux, no complaints.
Multiplayer works fine albeit being pretty much dead.
Works totally fine
Works great without the need for any kind of tinkering
It just works.
Worked perfectly, just like native
I managed to get the new vkQuake ray-traced version working too. See github comments section for details.

I see some control suggestions in the comments I might wanna try if I were to put serious time into this
I was able to join a game on E1M1 and killed the host with a rocket. I actually did that before fixing/tweaking controls to my preferences.
Worked fine! I killed a guy in an online match, and to say I did that from my couch with a steam deck in the year 2022, playing a game I remember first playing some 26 years ago was kind of surreal and just awesome.
Works out of the box with no tinkering.
Works great.
Played co-op in several public lobbies.
Played co-op with a friend.
For some reason all of the accessibility options were on by default.
