You have to downgrade to Proton 7. Proton 8 has problems, specifically it freezes on startup. Just white/black screen then crashes
Doesn't display any videos in-game
The game doesn't work on 5.X proton, only 4.X
Game runs great, I did not have to use any tweaks to get the game running (although I don't know if the performance is slower than Windows but overall runs great)
Video of the test: https://youtu.be/GNtzxAf1a-0
Game works great
Gameplay video: https://youtu.be/x22_Qxjoamc Initially tried it first with Proton GE 7-9 then work downwards to default Proton. So far both experience seems good.
Works out of the box
I just hit play and it works without much modification. Although I only tested the DirectX version but I was able to play the reimagined, Atari 2600, 5200, 7800, Lynx, 800 and Jaguar with no issues.
Gameplay video: https://youtu.be/v4ItRat8gMY
The game is unplayable on Linux atm. The game struggles to even get to 30fps and that is even at the lowest resolution and settings
Everytime the game renders a UI, performance problems starts to occur. I tried switching to D9VK and all other hacks and sadly to no avail none worked.
If you want to play Battle Realms on Linux, the GoG version is your best bet for now, since that one uses the last 2001 build. The steam version has fixes and patch that the GoG version did not have, but the steam version is an alpha release anyways.
Used dgVoodoo2 (http://dege.fw.hu/dgVoodoo/dgVoodoo/)
Then copy pasted the .dll files from MS/x86 folder to steamapps/common/BattleRealms
Then added the following flags on the launch options
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="D3D8.dll=n,b;D3D9.dll=n,b;D3DImm.dll=n,b;DDraw.dll=n,b" %command%
The game is playable now compare to default on 1080p but i do notice it's not as smooth as the GoG version using the 1080p widescreen hack.
It is not as unplayable as trying to run the game without doing the dgVoodoo hack. It's like the game became 30fps-ish? Can't really confirm because you lose the steam overlay when you do this.
If this turns you off, please use GoG instead.
I use 5.0-10 instead of the latest 5.13-4. I tested this with 5.13-4 first but i got problems with regards certain elements flicker while also causing a regression.
Possibly this is a 5.13 bug BUT 5.0-10 works fine.
I played the 1st to 2nd mission of Kenji and a quick 5 minute multiplayer match.
(Used dgVoodoo2)
Download dgVoodoo2 here (http://dege.fw.hu/dgVoodoo/dgVoodoo/)
Then copy pasted the .dll files from MS/x86 folder to steamapps/common/BattleRealms

WINEDLLOVERRIDES="D3D8.dll=n,b;D3D9.dll=n,b;D3DImm.dll=n,b;DDraw.dll=n,b" %command%
Alt-Tabbing or minizing the game will cause it to go blackscreen. This can be resolved if you use the dgVoodoo2 patch
Prior to 1.57.2, installing/using dgVoodoo2 was mandatory because of the FPS issues you encounter. Now you don't necessarily need it but you may want to still in order for you to resolve the window minimizing/alt-tabbing blackscreen problem.
You still have to use 5.0-10 instead of 5.13-6 because it still suffers from the flickering issues. Funny enough the issue does not seem to reflect on Proton-GE builds that are based on 5.13-6.

It will start on a black screen on startup (this portion is actually the movie/fmv intro). Pressing enter will eventually let you skip the movie and be able to let you play the game after.
Great arcade platform game like zombie tsunami with no microtransactions
Gameplay video: https://youtu.be/u2iNgKXCAwI
Works out of the box
I did not do any extra tinkering, I just hit play and everything went on smoothly.
Gameplay video: https://youtu.be/XlS3PFOmD5E
So far everything works great, I have been playing for an hour and everything from cutscenes works good. There are a couple of stutters for a first couple of seconds during gameplay here and there but its barely a problem.
Overall great compatibility.
Game runs great on Proton 5.X. You don't have to do the audio_27x hack that previous reviewer mentioned, it works out of the box!
If you alt-tab, there is a chance your X-server will freeze/laggy
The game still works great even after the latest patch. Tried playing a multiplayer game and still works.
Proton-5.9-GE-2-MF
Although you may need to use a custom proton version instead of 5.09 from Valve. The regular 5.0-9 from Valve no longer works and is stuck in a splash screen.
BGAs do not work on regular Proton for now.
Was able to play Air, Online ranked and non-ranked sessions
Gameplay video: https://youtu.be/U_vI1yGtJCY
You can play this game using regular Proton but don't expect BGAs to work.
The game is playable if you can play doom via gamepad or keyboard only. Mouse + Keyboard is borderline unplayable.
Had to specify vulak profile on launch options using the flag VK_ICD_FILENAMES
Playing with mouse is a big problem. You are forced to play using Keyboard only or gamepad at this point.
Whenever you try to use your mouse to scroll left and right, it goes into a frame skip which is bad.
If you setup your Linux box to be multi gpu aware (Like having multiple Vulkan Profiles; One for your iGPU and one for your dedicated GPU). The game will boot into a black screen unless you specify the profile using (VK_ICD_FILENAMES)
Example (My Launch Option): VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/nvidia_icd.json %command%
Had to use the following commands to skip the selection screen of classic and definitive edition:
mv ./bin ./bin.bak && ln -s DefEd/bin bin && cd bin && mv ./SupportTool.exe ./SupportTool.bak && ln -s EoCApp.exe SupportTool.exe
Alt+Tabbing while on fake fullscreen does not properly remove control of cursor from X Server. However you can alt+tab back.
The game works perfectly. The only problem is the program that selects if you are going to play Definitive Edition or the Original version. The purpose of the command above is to bypass this program.
Mods work properly and played and finished the game with and without mods on multiple playthroughs.
In-order for the program to run, you have to do the following commands:
mv ./bin ./bin.bak && ln -s DefEd/bin bin && cd bin && mv ./SupportTool.exe ./SupportTool.bak && ln -s EoCApp.exe SupportTool.exe
Generally is a little bit slower than playing on Windows but is definitely playable. Heck I am playing this game for 30+ hours now on Linux only with only an IGPU
For the performance, with the specs I have, you can play generally at 30fps at lower resolutions. A recorded performance can be seen here: https://youtu.be/2EdQDegGj-s
This review is the same as river of time since practically its running the same executable. Game runs flawlessly. Choppiness in video is related to game recorder. Although it would run much better if I my settings went on 720p (which I didn't). [Can't blame the game, since I'm running this on an iGPU] Only issue you will probably have is that the game doesn't terminate properly. You will have to restart steam and also kill wineserver manually. Video of the game running on intel hd 630: https://youtu.be/tmkHDriNc5o

Game seems to be alot smoother in Linux than on Windows
Gameplay video: https://youtu.be/B3XtWawyJEo I only convered the single player aspect on the video but later on I tried playing online and it seems to work fine.
Was able to play against players
It is only playable right now on Proton Experimental
PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
By default, I suffered 1 digit FPS, it slightly improved by turning on AMD FSR (from 9fps to 23fps) but it wasn't enough.
I fixed the issue by using the OpenGL D3D instead of DXVK.
Gameplay video: https://youtu.be/qCbQlURPTKE
3d objects do not have textures (black)
The menu works but when you have an existing save, it already shows it cannot render textures leaving you with a 3d model with no textures (just black)
Gameplay video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSksZ2tlkRQ
I change my dynamic minimum resolution from 50% to 100% and max fps to 30fps. Most of the time I get 30fps consistent but on towns and some other places it dips as low as 18fps but is fine.
The Easy Anti-Cheat integration for the game has caused issues now with Proton. Thus you can no longer play the game.
Now you get an Anti-Cheat not initialized.
Farm frenzy 4 flickers until I change to window modd
Flickering on fullscreen
Very playable on latest Proton
Proton-GE-6.5-2 GloriousEggroll
Glorius Eggroll Builds (6.5-2)
Alt-tabbing causes performance degradation either on fullscreen or borderless
Whenever I switch window [alt-tabbing] (even on borderless window) there is a chance that I get FPS problems. But this doesn't happen always and if it does, simply restarting the game resolves the issue
Gameplay video: https://youtu.be/indGn-UrroU You may notice that videos wont play and end up as black boxes (specially the videos demonstrating the command list). The rest of the features works though.
The videos may not play but I do not think it is a big deal since the input buttons are still there anyways.
Specify the locale via "LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 %command%" flag
You just need to specify the locale of the program otherwise you get box text characters.
The game slows down to a crawl if you use full screen graphical option. Instead use borderless window
The game loves to create zombie processes once you exit the game.
The game runs great. Slowdowns may happen when you encounter a modder in GTA Online but I don't see this as a bad thing
The issue I raise up back in 4.11 where it creates zombie process no longer exists. Its fixed in 5.0.9
You may encounter crashes out of the blue (Like all of a sudden, game starts to go not responding). This is not a proton issue but an issue on the game itself.
During my playthrough with a friend of mine, I encountered this issue randomly and he encountered it too out of the blue. To add he is on WIndows and I am on Linux. So yeah..
Can only proceed to uplay, afterwards, uplay cannot launch the game. Maybe an issue with uplay? https://youtu.be/BxjxT1-lGnM
Best Go client that you can play so far and its playable on Linux!
Was able to connect my OGS account and do one match with it
In my 1 hour of gameplay, I have finished the tutorial (basics and capturing), played a game with a newcomer level AI (9x9 board; No time limit), had an online match at OGS (9x9 board; 5 min time limit), spectated an online game and peruse historical games.
Gameplay video: https://youtu.be/xEEWMGAdzXs
The game works fine for the first few minutes then it freezes randomly. I haven't even left the world map yet.
Game freezes randomly
Gameplay video: https://youtu.be/Pru0qSgH1yA
First crash started at 5:20 and then 8:17
Moved all the psb files (except for sound_config.psb) from windata/sound to a different folder (I named mine sound_backup).
This customization will disable sound in all its entirety but will prevent the random crashes from happening.
Had to remove the sound files otherwise it will cause random freezes with the game.
So between choosing with Windows and experience FPS problems or Linux via Proton and experiencing removal of Audio to fix the stability issues, I suggest that you do not buy this game.
Game still freezes randomly
Tried also with my Steamdeck OLED and save issue
The game starts but the menu screen is distorted and once you play any game, it goes black screen. Basically its unplayable.
Nothing has change since my last report
Via Proton 5.0.1, it still runs on the same issues. Distorted menu and can't play the megaman games.
Modified Proton-5.9-GE-6-ST
Modifications:
Replaced the DXVK version of this GE build to 1.8.1 (Can easily be done by going to the extracted Proton Build folder and replace the dll files in dist/lib/wine/dxvk/ and dist/lib64/wine/dxvk from what is in 1.8.1 in the dxvk release github page)
There are some audio cuts here and there in the game cinematics. Only one game is affected base on the test and that is Megaman 8.
None of my controllers are detected. Tried Xinput and Direct Input. Devices used: Logitech F310, 8bitdo SF30 and Xbox 360 Controller
It doesn't matter which proton version you use (But I recommend overriding the G.E builds that way it plays the cinematic videos in Megaman 8) as long as you override/replace the DXVK versions from that bundle to the latest one Version 1.8.1
For gamepad issues, you can use AntiMicroX to map your gamepad. Although the only downside using this is on menu, the buttons will use your keyboard buttons instead of gamepad buttons but that's ok!
Gameplay video: https://youtu.be/UFPoNGVIZHI
The game just opens up in the system tray and stays there.
Using KDE's preview on the process list feature. I only see colors changing from time to time. No sound, or any display whatsever.
The game works great. This extra step (hassle) only happens if you have made your Linux installation multi gpu aware.
Had to specify vulak profile on launch options using the flag VK_ICD_FILENAMES
If you setup your Linux box to be multi gpu aware (Like having multiple Vulkan Profiles; One for your iGPU and one for your dedicated GPU). The game will crash unless you specify the profile using (VK_ICD_FILENAMES)
Example (My Launch Option): VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/nvidia_icd.json %command%
Black screen with gold pointer
I use the latest proton 5.05
When you switch from resizable mode to fixed mode, then switch back to resizable. The window can no longer be maximized and a client restart is necessary. (This bug also exists on Windows)
The game is perfect but needs Proton GE builds to fully work. 5.0.9 works fine but video scenes are just black screen.
5.9-GE-MF2 GloriousEggroll
When you start the game and alt-tab on its initial loading (loading before main menu). There is a high chance the game will just stick in black screen and you have to restart the game either by quitting via Steam or Process manager
Gameplay video: https://youtu.be/pvu0OeLC788
installed mflat.dll using this script https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-installcab
The game crashes on wine 4.11-7 after the first cutscene
Using wine 4.2-9 seems to work great. I haven't tried playing the game from start to finish so I am not sure with this.
ProtonGE 5.8-MF3
The game crashes before you get your time and score. The other bugs posted before that such as crashing on STARS and the Carlos looking at Dr. Brad's emails already works!
Had to use large address aware otherwise it will cause a memory leak then crash
Had to first set the OS version via winecfg from Windows 7 to Windows XP.
Then installed wmfdist11-64.exe and wmp11-64.exe by getting the binaries from an extracted wmp11-windowsxp-x64-enu.exe (Any decent archive manager can do this)
Installing wmp11-64 is a bit tricky, since the unregwmp.exe during installation gets stuck causing the installer to get stuck forever. Terminating/Killing the process works and allows you to complete the installation.
Once that is done you can now play the game.
There are instructions to install windows media player 10 by creating a new win32 wineprefix then converting it back to win64 by adding a syswow64 directory on the windows folder.
Although it works, I notice that it only works on the first run and doesn't work after that.

Kindly install Maluc's BH5 GFWL removal mod (http://www.sb-online.org/maluc/index.php?did=bh5fixes).
I tried not using the mod but I ended up having troubles starting the game.
use "protontricks -c" to install windows media player 11
Not an in game bug but I find that the game stalls on the background until you kill the wine processes involved probably on launching glfw.
After that, the game boots up.
Also because of this DRM, the game won't do a graceful shutdown. You have to kill the processes manually.
Wasn't able to get the game working out of the box. Had to do the wm11 trick before I was able to play the game.
Otherwise, the game crashes after the capcom logo.
Great port of an old JRPG classic with modern QOL added
Gameplay Video: https://youtu.be/CO3XeNiMIzY
Game works perfectly
Gameplay video: https://youtu.be/E7qL0cW4XYc
The game seems to be perfect now on Proton 7
Although I recommend more playing this game on the native Linux client, the steam version seems to be stable now (I have played a bit during the DXP and did a couple of bosses [for reaper task] and I haven't encountered any problems yet with it)
Gameplay video: https://youtu.be/TS9y05EK2FY
During recording, I use the GE build (Proton 6.8-GE-1) instead of the official one (6.3-4) as an out of habit if it works.
I recommend using the official one because it gives you better performance overall (I get 60fps on areas where I only get 20-30fps on GE build)
I did not try with the default / non-ge. But I have a feeling it works with Proton 9.0.3. Gameplay video: https://youtu.be/n_xPQjJS6rU
Proton 5.07RC (Proton next branch of 5.0)
My gamepad wasn't working but keyboard input is fine.
Gameplay video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Cl6L_LWaZU
Great free platformer game for anyone to enjoy. Specially for those that wants to scratch that super mario itch
The game plays but has issues with memory leaks. I believe its more aggressive than it is on Windows.
Its playable and you can probably live with the lag (30fps instead of 60fps) with filthy casual aim assist
If I change resolution or display mode (from exclusive fullscreen to borderless), the game freezes or black screen
I am not able to get consistent 60fps
I use this version of Proton instead of 7.15-GE because for some reason the video, although it plays, appears warped or has artifacts.
Gameplay video: https://youtu.be/43JenLuhZhc
The game is playable now in Proton 5.0.1. You no longer need to maintain a seperate windows wine installation to play this game.
Proton version doesn't work. If you try to run Windows version of steam and run the game from there (using Wine 4.7 and up), you can play the game from there.
The game is still unplayable via Linux Steam
Since Tales of Berseria is playable under Proton 5.0.1, I wanted to test if this game is playable now without resorting to installing a windows wine version.
Still has the same issues I'm afraid.
The game is still not playable on Proton 5.0.1
Was looking forward that this game will no longer needed to be played via a windows version of steam. But it seems I let my hopes up too early.
Same issue as last time. Black screen with cursor.
I had to compile the latest Faudio build and link it to steam. Not sure why I had to do that before the sound worked on 18.04 (since I checked, there is an already built Faudio) [Most probably, compiling from source ironed out dependency issues?]
Sound works ok when not recording, this is another issue I suppose?
Without the Faudio being built from source, game works fine anyways (just that, no sounds)
Video of the test run: https://youtu.be/_vXXmJBKTV0
Used WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" for audio issues
Using WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" fixes this issue
Game seems to freeze when using mods or using the mod shop or creators foundation shop
Game freezes upon exit. Have to use other means to exit properly
One of the MMORPGs that you can outright play on Linux. Great game!
You encounter significant slowdowns that it makes the game barely enjoyable
Typing fast or on controller mode will lower fps
If playing on gamepad, game becomes significantly easier because of lower fps in general (easier to evade bullets and type the inputs at the same time).
Gameplay video: https://youtu.be/iZZn9fz3Pc4
Great and challenging typing game
Disregard my previous report, works perfectly fine now on Proton 8.
PS: If you notice you cannot make screenshots, its normal. It has the same bug on Windows.
The game is perfectly playable. My friend & I's first intro play and I was playing as the host. No problems.
Sometimes artifacts happen randomly not a big deal though.
The game's input becomes unresponsive if alt-tabbed. Even if in window mode. The only way to fix this is restart the game.
If you like to alt+tab alot, then you will have problem on this game. If you only alt tab to a web browser. Steam's onscreen layout is enough.
Game is playable, enhanced mode only crashes on cerberus, otherwise game is perferctly playable.
Game loses control of input when user onfocuses on window, regardless if fullscreen, borderless or windowed. The only thing that works is alt + f4
Game crashes in enhanced mode on cerberus. So if you get to Act IV, make sure to play on legacy at this point or otherwise you'll crash everytime cerberuses uses his poison breathe attack.
The game probably is trying to scale the image but couldn't able to
I couldn't manage to play the opening video. But its not a big deal anyways.
Proton-5.9-GE-8-ST GloriousEggroll
Reports earlier regarding no opening video is resolve if you use the custom proton version. Fullscreen also works BUT since this is a custom proton version, it will change your actual screen resolution instead of using Proton's upscale to window one.
Had problems with initial startup, had to use desktop mode to finish it
Game has a small text for the screen you have
Very frequent flickering on game mode (had to go back to desktop mode)
The game crashes on Proton 9 (and alternatives based in it)
Great game, everything works including cutscenes
Gameplay video: https://youtu.be/-ZuUkSEk2e0
Cutscenes do not play for now, but if you use 5.6GE2 custom proton, cutscene will now load and play but the main problem now is that there is no audio outside of the cutscenes.
The mfplat integration patch in 5.6GE2 is promising so stay tuned for future proton patch notes.
Has a small problem problem with gamepad but can easily be solved via AntimicroX or any gamepad to keyboard mapping tools.
For some reason it would not detect any of my gamepads
Needs Proton-Experimental or Proton-GE to work properly
Gameplay video: https://youtu.be/oQ1RKFqzdmw
You have to modify firefox so that it accepts duellinks protocol and create a custom script that intercepts it. minionprocyk comment at https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/1471 works
The game plays fine. Activating Konami ID requires a little bit of a modification (creating a script that is used to call DuelLinksTakeOver.exe and modifying firefox) and the game has issues on window mode (getting "Failed to Get Thread Context" errors) but can easily be resolve by going fullscreen (alt + enter)
