Use proton GE of some sort of the backgrounds won't load properly (other wine versions might also work)
Make sure that v-sync is disabled ingame and that kwin is not using v-sync in the window. If I had v-sync on there was terrible latency issues which I likely would have also had on windows.

Basically works. Have to manually install some proprietary codecs to display BGAs. Display latency tweaks should be applied.
Installed ubuntu-restricted-extras
package from the multiverse
repository
Met some audio/input latency (with 512KB buffer)
Input feels much "late"
Only after installing ubuntu-restricted-extras
can make the BGAs display properly

I didn't test about online multiplayer, but I think it'll work at all.

Overall very playable but not ideal for the hardcore rhythm game enthusiast
Audio delay compared to ASIO on Windows is about 41ms on my system with Pipewire, which - although playable - makes the game feel not the best to play, as it's fully keysounded. May be caused by currently non-working audio buffer setting that's essentially stuck at 256, as someone else already pointed out.

The purest commercial VSRG experience on steam. Prepare an NKRO keyboard for 8K mode. Stuttering when pressing more than 6 keys at once on Manjaro with GNOME. No stuttering on Arch with KDE. GNOME may cause the problem.
The game works perfectly fine except for the fact that all the background videos do not play. Only a TV Color Bar Test Screen kind of background goes on in the background for a little bit before pausing outright for the rest of a chart.

The game is very playable, but I have one nitpick:
It seems like the audio buffer adjustments made in the game's settings aren't reflected by the the game's audio buffer size, but this probably has something to do with Proton and not the game itself. I tried making the buffer size 128, but the buffer size proton used for the game remained at 256. 256 is perfectly playable, so it's not a big deal, it's just worth noting since audio delay is important to these kinds of games.
There might be a way to adjust the audio buffer size using a config file in the system somewhere, but I haven't been able to figure it out yet. I'm using PipeWire for my audio.

and no performance issue, much better than djmax

Any proton version below 8 won't work
Was able to play against players
It is only playable right now on Proton Experimental

Set the playback device to ADP for low-latency audio. I recommend running at 180fps with no FPS limit in the Steam overlay, and keeping Allow Tearing disabled (this gives the lowest latency visually without visible judder or screen-tearing -- you can increase the FPS above 180, but it'll drastically increase power consumption with no real visual benefit). Game draws very little from CPU/GPU while playing (though while loading the CPU increases). Total system power draw with these settings was on average about 8-10 watts.
BGAs are working now with bleeding edge experimental
BGA videos are scrambled
Game crashed on exit. Didn't impact gameplay
Backgrounds in Expiremental don't work, they just show like a weird kind of color bar image. https://toweringdoor.s-ul.eu/TcmuH0gi.png
Using GE Proton7-5 fixed this issue
Might just be my laptop profiling, but timing was really weird compared to when I play on windows. I turned off vsync and changed the low latency mode to High. That seemed to fix the problems with me getting a lot of lates.
Using GE Proton7-9, 7-10 or 7-14 caused the game to not boot and bring up a security error.
game works great overall, but video won't work due to valve's MF fixes. using Proton-GE made video works. (previously didn't work due to anti-cheat wasn't compatible with Proton-GE)
The videos are all working now, and there's no stutter anymore.
I had to set audio buffer to normal and set frame at 144hz. But anyone running with more sane hardware should have great experience.
Graphic setting will be fixed to "LOW" regardless of setting in option, V-Sync Option stutters, avoid V-Sync.
Suspected to use Xigncode.
Does indeed work now, but no BGA
Missing background video
The game now works with Proton Experimental (not GE tho.). But the background videos during play are always missing, showing a test screen instead. I'm on a 144hz monitor and on Windows the game runs perfectly smooth, but there's some very noticeable stutter when using Proton.
As of Dec 4th, 2021, the game runs just as well as it does on Windows

Doesn't launch, "Failed to load il2cpp"
EZ2ON worked for a little bit, they released a few builds without their DRM in a private beta branch while re-designing the in-game menus, but since they added it back, I can't play the game anymore. I can't even get it to launch as of a few months ago, I just get an error on boot that says "Failed to load il2cpp"

It does not work since the introduction of anti-cheat.
It seems that anti-cheat has been introduced since the emergency security patch on July 7th. Unfortunately, it no longer works with Proton. When you start a game, a security error appears and you cannot play it. I am not sure exactly which anti-cheat was used, but it is highly likely that XIGNCODE was used.

Security check failed
Game immediately shows an in-game pop-up saying "Security check failed - Critical file execution failed, shut down all other applications, disable your antivirus software and try again", and the only option is to quit the game. Likely related to the Xigncode3 anti-cheat.
After a few updates, the game now runs about as well as on Windows
When using "Fullscreen" mode, the game used a very ugly scaling from 1080p (seemingly the highest resolution it would let me run it at) to the full 1440p size of my monitor.
When using "Borderless Fullscreen", this did not occur.
"Fullscreen" mode would cause a black screen upon alt-tabbing
"Borderless Fullscreen" performed perfectly. "Windowed" and "Borderless Windowed" worked perfectly
Switching modes would sometimes cause the game to hang/crash, but after restarting the game it would work fine.

Hangs after selecting a song
After selecting a song, game hangs on the loading screen.
On Proton 5.13, title screen background seems to not load
On Experimental, backgrounds are replaced with test pattern (texture failing to load differently?). Have had it hang on song select
Fails to start at all on earlier Proton versions. Some go to black screen, others crash.
