Launch with "WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" %command%" to get the audio working again.
RADV_PERFTEST=aco to remove a lot of stuttering (requires mesa 20+).
Fixed with disabling VSync in the graphics options.
ACO removes pretty much all of the stuttering, but there are a few when entering new areas. Still, I can't confirm if those are present on Windows.
No issues at all. Just install and play.
I even forgot to report this one because I thought it was native. This game runs that well.
6.16-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
The game doesn't properly fit to the whole screen when playing in fullscreen: a few rows of pixels are cutoff, which is not that annoying given that there's usually no important UI elements at the bottom of the screen.
Every time a new cutscene played the game crashed. Thankfully this game autosaves right before each one, so you can get right back in, except that they won't play at all, just the audio. It's no big deal since they show something that's about to happen in game but in an anime-style cutscene.
There's one exception to the autosave: when you beat the game there's a cutscene after the final boss. So when the game crashes it won't actually register that you beat the game, so you will have to do the final boss again if you want that.
Use these launch parameters to get the game working: PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 %command%
The game won't even run.
The issue is, apparently, DRM.
The game won't even run.
The issue is definitely DRM given that changing the executable to a cracked one solves it. This same thing applies to MW2.
Even though the game runs great on Linux out-of-the-box, the loading times are unbearable.
The loading times are ETERNAL. Like incredibly long. It takes around 5 to 10 minutes to load a level.
This issue seems to only applies on Proton. Changing Proton versions (GE, tgk, etc.) didn't change anything, nor could I find a fix elsewhere.
Mouse has a weird behavior and sometimes gets stuck.
These launch parameters worked for me (adjust resolution, if necessary):
MESA_EXTENSION_MAX_YEAR=2008 __GL_ExtensionStringVersion=17700 %command% +set r_ignorehwgamma 1 +set r_mode -1 +set r_customheight 1080 +set r_customwidth 1920 +set com_introplayed 1 +set cg_drawfps 0
Online and local multiplayer work out of the box.
Proton-5.21-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Regular Proton swapped the joysticks, bumpers and triggers on my controller. That was fixed when I changed to GE's Proton. Performance was exactly the same with both.
Regular Proton swapped the joysticks, bumpers and triggers on my controller. That was fixed when I changed to GE's Proton. Performance was exactly the same with both.
Played through (didn't do the DLC) with some multiplayer and found no problems. Works great!
Works like a charm. Did three runs on with no problems whatsoever.
Death Stranding runs like native. Didn't encounter any issues that aren't on Windows.
This game has native support for the PS5 Dualsense. You can either force the button mappings from the in-game options or you can enable Steam Input for this game (Right click game → Properties → Controller → Enable Steam Input) to add support for the touchpad, gyro, etc.
When using a controller, every time you select an item the mouse cursor pops up and won't go away until you move the mouse. This can be very annoying at times.
It crashed once or twice throughout 50 hours.
The online/multiplayer elements work like a charm!
Even though the game runs perfectly (performance-wise) it has some issues.
I had this weird bug throughout the campaign where the game would get stuck (in a black screen) when loading a new level, unless I alt-tabbed out and back in. Doing that fixed the loading screen and the game would proceed as usual.
The game crashed maybe five or six times throughout the campaign. Also sometimes the game wouldn't run at all.
Nevertheless the issues, DOOM is so amazing that these hardly matter at all.
Just like with the base game, this one works flawlessly.
And, just like with the base game, I would still recommend playing this one with the source port dhewm3.
DOOM Eternal runs like native, main game and DLC. Just install and play and enjoy this masterpiece.
I can confirm that this game is picky about which Nvidia driver version you have installed. I couldn't get the game to run with version 495 or greater. Downgrading to 470 fixes this. This same behaviour is reproducible on Windows.
Game works like native.
First and ending cutscenes are missing. I didn't try it, but GloriousEggroll usually fixes this.
The game works just fine.
There were some moments where the audio would literally explode in a deafening noise. These were pretty rare, and always happened near some turrets, about two or three, and when using the homing on the rocker launcher.
Load times are quite long (20+ seconds) for such an old game, even on a moderately fast CPU and SSD.
The game would just crash when quick loading. Quick saving/manual saving and manual loading work just fine.
If you want to play in an aspect ratio that is not 4:3, installing the mods that other people recommended didn't work for me: the game would refuse to use the GPU, even after applying the voodoo patch. I got around it with this guide. No mods necessary, just edit two files and that's it.
If you have a Dualsense, you have to enable the desktop gamepad template, like others said. You can do it like this (you need to plug in/connect your controller):
- Clicking "Steam" on the menu-bar,
- Go to "Controller" tab
- Click the "DESKTOP CONFIGURATION" button
- Select "BROWSE CONFIGS", down below
- Select "Templates", to the left
- Select the "Gampad" template
- Finally, select "APPLY CONFIGURATION"
At launch, the stutters where massive. However, these days they are minor (at least for me).
Proton Experimental and Proton EasyAntiCheat Runtime (I think) are required for online to work.
You need:
- Proton experimental to even run the game
- Proton EasyAntiCheat Runtime to play online (I think)
- Setup some things to get some controllers to work
- Mesa 22 in order to get some decent frame-rate (available on Arch-based distros right now)
If you have all of these, ELDEN RING runs great on Linux. Maybe even better than on Windows, thanks to DXVK bypassing the subpar DX12 implementation.
The game runs like native on day one, which is awesome!
Tested a bunch of things on the hour I played, like windowing, controller support, some combat, etc. and found no issues at all.
Just like with the first game, works right out of the box with no issues on day one.
I didn't play for long but I did test some things like controller support, windowing problems, etc. and found no problems.
The game works just fine, besides the audio crackling.
People reported that PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30
fixes this but it didn't for me. It seems that the crackling happens when the framerate dips from 30 FPS (which on this laptop happended occasionaly).
I used "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30
", which didn't do anything. Instead, using "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 %command%
" actually fixed the crackling.
Just like with the first two, this one works like native on day one.
Didn't play for long, but I also didn't found any common issues (windowing problems, input problems, etc.).
Fixed with "PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 %command%
".
The game is capped at 30FPS which, in my opinion, is not bad in these kinds of games. However, the battle scenes are capped at 15FPS, which is not OK. I fixed this with this guide. You can trust the posted .exe, I checked that they were the same that the ones I modified myself and they were. But, if you don't trust them, you can still patch it on your own with a hex edit (okteta is a nice one). This patch doesn't mess with cloud saves or with achievements, they both work.
Just like with the other three, this one works out of the box with no problems.
And, just like with the other three, I can also report that I found no issues at all with somewhat common problems like controller support, low performance, windowing, etc.
5.9-GE-6-ST GloriousEggroll
Supposedly, the cloud saves automatically upload when closing the game. However, this didn't happen to me, I had to manually upload them in the main menu.
The game crashed right after the final boss, leaving me unable to finish the game. However, this only happened with the Moguri mod installed. After disabling the mod, I could finish the game no problem.
If you want to use the Moguri mod (I highly recommend it), you can follow this reddit thread to make it work.
The mod launcher never opened for me when launching the game (Steam boots FFIX right away), but you can access it with
wine path/to/FFIX directory/FF9_Launcher.exe
The game worked great from beginning to end on my Mint install.
The game works on Arch Linux but the fonts won't render correctly. It looks like it may be a mesa
problem. Check this out for more information.
The game works great, no tweaks necessary.
Audio can get crackly if the game drop some frames. This seems to be common with Proton, at least in my experience with this laptop.
It crashed like three or four times. This seems to be common on Windows too.
Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster runs great out-of-the-box
Just like the other Pixel Remasters, this one runs as native.
The game runs great, even if the framerate is capped at 15/30
The second screen of the game is entirely black. The rest is just fine.
Clicking the "My Profile" button on the launcher did nothing. The button should take you to this website. There you can view saves, achievements and boost your characters.
To fix the music, just like -PhiniX- said down below, you need to install directmusic and set dsound to Builtin. To install directmusic run:
protontricks 39150 directmusic #
Make sure to at least run the game once before executing this command.
To set dsound to Builtin run:
protontricks 39150 winecfg
Then go to Libraries, search for dsound on the drop down menu, click add, then edit and select Builtin (Wine).
This should fix the music.
-PhiniX- also mentioned a fix for the music mods, but I couldn't make them work.
Alt-tabbing/changing window focus completely disables controller inputs unless you reboot the game.
Even though you can fix the music, I would probably recommend playing the remaster. If you can get over how it looks, it has more features, the audio works from the get-go (with the good music, not the MIDI version, no need for mods) and you don't have that (probably unfixable) controller unmapping with alt-tabbing issue.
Even though the games (FFX & X-2) run fine in terms of performance, the crashing and missing audio is almost a deal breaker.
Sometimes the game just refuses to play audio, requiring you to restart it (sometimes multiple times) in order to fix it. This issue is somewhat alleviated with ProtonGE. Around 75% of the times I started the game I had audio, with sometimes just requiring a quick restart.
FFX runs fine, but FFX-2 frequently crashed, almost once every hour and for seemingly random reasons. I tried applying some patch I found on the PC Gaming Wiki but it didn't work.
I completed FFX on Linux but played through FFX-2 on my Windows machine because of the frequent crashing (there's none on Windows for some reason).
I didn't test FFX-2 Last Mission.
FF12 runs great on Linux with no configuration required! The only minor issue is the one described below.
If you have a controller connected and you press a key on your keyboard while on the main menu, all of the controls (gamepad and keyboard) lock up.
You either have to wait a somewhat random time in order to regain control (two or three minutes), or launch the game again and only use one device.
Again, this only happens in the main menu. You can switch devices in-game without issue.
As far as I can tell this is an issue with the game because it also happended to me in Windows.
Fallout 3 runs like native on Steam! Just install and play.
Even though this game is famous for its crashes, it did it only a coupled time in almost 50 hours.
I can't exactly blame the game on this one because I really don't know what happened, but in the Anchorage DLC, my PC with a 1050 Ti tanked pretty hard int the last couple scenes.
I can also report that this game runs great on my machine with a Nvidia 1050 Ti (which, other than the GPU is identical to this one).
The game runs like native, DLC too. Install and play!
As expected, New Vegas crashes pretty frequently. Also, there's a reproducible crash with mouse and keyboard: press enter inside the Pip Boy with no item selected and boom, crash to desktop.
Regular Proton got me to the main menu but got stuck on new game. GloriousEggroll's Proton solved this problem.
Besides the Proton version, everything else worked fine, no issues at all. Just finished the game.
6.10-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Regular Proton only got me up to the main menu. You can get GE's Proton from here.
GTA IV runs right out of the box on Linux!
Played through the main story and both DLCs.
The only issues I encountered are both present on Windows: minor graphical artifacts and three or four crashes throughout 50 hours.
GTA 5 works great on Linux with no configuration needed!
Sometimes, GTA 5 crashes while changing the graphics in-game (not main menu).
If you use DX12, you'll get heavy flickering on the Colorado level. DX11 solves this issue with no apparent drawback.
I played it with Proton just to test how it run and forgot to switch back to native because it run great.
On another hand, like always, turn on Steam Input if you have a Dualsense and want to use the touchpad, and to enable more options. However, this adds some delay (like a minute) when you launch HITMAN (if you use GNOME, this delay, for some reason, can crash your desktop. This didn't happen on KDE).
Steam's version won't launch, apparently because of DRM. GOG's version works perfectly out of the box with Lutris.
RADV_PERFTEST=aco
Weird shadow flickering in the tutorial.
The game runs great, except for the audio that's broken unless launched with some arguments.
PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 %command%
Audio is completely missing unless launched with WINEDLLOVERRIDES="openal32=b"
Sometimes, characters became unaffected by the illumination, basically becoming black boxes. This, apparently, only happens on AMD CPUs.
6.15-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
In the launch menu select DirectX11, otherwise the game won't launch with GE.
Some artifacts on the water in a particular level.
In order to fix the videos you can run the game with GE's Proton , 6.15-GE-2 in particular. Other versions of GE won't even launch.
Remember to select DX11 on the launch menu or the video will still not work with GE!
Game works perfectly. I stopped playing just because I switched to realMyst.
Performance is OK, but frequent crashes and lack of cutscenes make this a frustrating and straight up bad experience.
Some buttons were not recognized after a crash.
This game crashes a lot. Like a lot:
- Random crashes
- It crashes in the first boss (you can avoid this one if you skip the cutscene)
- Crashes when summoning a revenant
- Crashes when killing an enemy in the turorial. This can lock your game. The only way AFAICT to progress is to start a new game and skip the tutorial altogether.
No videos or cutscenes are played at all. Some are replaced with a black screen, others with the first frame of the video (skills' movies, for example).
Works just like native. Install and play!
This game used to have issues with button/axis mapping. However, those are gone now, thankfully!
Played through the demo with no problems at all. Looks like a great game and concept.
While the regular version works great, the included glQuake is borked.
The game runs really well. The only thing is that it may force your graphics to low.
To fix the low graphics, you can overwrite the settings in a config file. This is the one I used, which is a modified version of one submitted by another reporter (more details on the link). I only changed the multisamples from 16 to 8. Otherwise, the fix would apply at all.
Game crashed once.
While the regular version works great, the included glQuake is borked.
Game runs perfectly, except for glQuake which is borked.
The game runs great. Like other reports said, it just needs Proton 5.0-10 and wmp11 installed.
protontricks 304240 wmp11
Sometimes the changing camera angles would take almost a literal second and spike my SSD usage.
The game runs great with regular Proton, I didn't encounter any significant issues, just missing cutscenes.
6.5-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
The cutscenes won't play on regular Proton, instead a test pattern video would appear. Glorious Eggroll's builds of Proton fix this.
6.10-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Gamemode gave me a boost of 10 to 20% in performance.
Just like in RE2, the intro movie will be replaced with a test pattern. GloriousEggroll's Proton fixes this.
The game runs great. Regular Proton got stuck in the main menu; GE's version did the trick right away.
5.21-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Proton-5.21-GE-1
Out of sync in cutscenes by about two or three seconds.
There is a slight noise effect on dark areas. It might be related to AO.
The first few times I played the game, at around the two hour mark, performance would suddenly drop and become basically unplayable with no reason whatsoever (temps were OK, no throttling). Rebooting the game fixes the problem somewhat: it runs great until two hours later the same thing happens again.
It turns out disabling V-Sync fixes the problem entirely.
6.13-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
There's a scene with a projector that's supposed to play a little movie. Instead, a green screen is in place. It's no game breaker given that what should have been shown is not essential.
GloriousEggroll's proton seem to run the game a little bit better. And the FOV mod from Nexus Mods also works without issues.
Runs great! In my case, with my hardware, it seems to run a bit smoother than in Windows.
The game works great out of the box.
There is a little section where you are supposed to watch a VHS on a little screen. Instead, the screen is grey. It's no big deal since the audio is the most important part while the video itself doesn't show much.
Alt-tabing disabled fullscreen, forcing me to re-apply it with a simple desktop hotkey or from the in-game settings.
Better performance than the native version. Modding also works!
It crashed a couple of times quicksaving with F5. Saving through the menu always worked.
Game works like native: just install and play!
Completed the main game with no issues at all, although I didn't play the DLC (yet).
I thought my system would be able to run it at 60 FPS+ all the time but there were moments, inside a city for example, where it would drop to 50/40 FPS. It might be an optimization problem with the game, not with it running on Linux.
Runs great out of the box.
There's a lot of flickering and glitching whenever blood appears (spoilers I guess?). Very weird, very specific issue.
This issue is not specific to GNU/Linux (tested it on Windows), but considering that the whole game is based around an apartment, I would have hope having no trouble running it at 60+ FPS, given my hardware.
However, the game runs constantly between 50~60, which is weird given that it doesn't look incredible and that the map is basically three small rooms.
Not a significant problem, just a curiosity. This game does not really benefit from high framerates.
Antialiasing and post-processing messes a couple of scenes/sequences.
Works great out of the box!
Weird green outline when reading books and notes/pages.
