Works great out of the box. Controller needs SteamInput mapping, but is easily enabled.
Had to enable SteamInput and load a community-contributed controller mapping to simulate keyboard presses. The game doesn't seem to detect the controller directly at all, even though Steam itself does.

Install dmusic via winetricks, set dsound to "builtin"
Audio fix via suggested winetricks methods
You will need to map controller inputs to the keyboard.
If you are unsucessful installing dmusic through winetricks, delete the "pfx" folder and run the command 'WINEPREFIX="[steam library directory]/steamapps/compatdata/39150/pfx" winetricks' again.
installed protontricks via discover on desktop mode then followed @Shizzlock's steps to get music working
Music is missing.
Music does not play.
To get music to work I had to install directmusic with protontricks. Before that, permissions had to be given to the proton folder.
To do this, go to Home/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common. Then right click on the proton folder that the game is using (Proton 7.0 in my case) and go to properties. Go to Permissions and make Owner, Group, and Others have "Can View & Modify Content" and check "apply changes to all subfolders and their contents (not sure if all three need it, but it's what I did).
After permissions have been given, open console and execute the following command: /usr/bin/flatpak run --branch=stable --arch=x86_64 --command=protontricks com.github.Matoking.protontricks 39150 directmusic
Music should work now.
The music in Final Fantasy games is a vital part of the atmosphere of the story. It's a very different game without music (less engaging).
Helps to have touchpad bound for mouse + click to get through the warning & launcher
No music
Controller must be set to keyboard shortcuts, doesn't work as a controller
I tried to use protontricks as others have recommmended on Linux, but had errors unpacking several of the libraries (e.g. dmsynth). Also tried GE-Proton 7.39 and Proton Experimental, but none fixed the music.
Steps to fix no background music after initial FMV:
- Install ProtonTricks from the discover store.
- Install FFNx https://github.com/julianxhokaxhiu/FFNx/blob/master/docs/how_to_install.md#2013-steam-release-1 for step by step instructions.
- Install Original midi music mod https://forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=19968.0 You want the FFNx 1.8.x+ installation.
- Follow instructions on README.
Then you should be all good to start the game.
Background music after first FMV is missing. Fixed by installing mods.
No audio
Only the music in the first FMV played (and got delayed after a few seconds), there is no music after that.
Default controller layout does not work well - Use community layout
Game does not accept input with default controller layout - use community layout or own layout.
After changing the controller layout the game worked for me but without background music.
I used these protontricks verbs:
protontricks 39150 dmband dmime dmsynth dmusic dsound
dsound
fixes the audio sync in the opening video sequence, and presumably later ones as well.- The other verbs get the midi music functioning.
directmusic
, which others used, installs all of these, as well as some other unnecessary dlls, so I used just the necessary ones.
3d models occasionally flicker between 2 different geometries. Someone's chin will cave in oddly or something. Uncommon and not generally a big deal. Possibly not even linux-related.
The only way to see your other programs is to quit. Very insistent about hogging your screen.
A workaround is to run protontricks 39150 winecfg
, go to the Graphics tab, check Emulate a virtual desktop
, and fill in the desired window resolution below that.
The game feels astoundingly boring without the music. It's really integral to the experience.
To fix the music, just like -PhiniX- said down below, you need to install directmusic and set dsound to Builtin. To install directmusic run:
protontricks 39150 directmusic #
Make sure to at least run the game once before executing this command.
To set dsound to Builtin run:
protontricks 39150 winecfg
Then go to Libraries, search for dsound on the drop down menu, click add, then edit and select Builtin (Wine).
This should fix the music.
-PhiniX- also mentioned a fix for the music mods, but I couldn't make them work.
Alt-tabbing/changing window focus completely disables controller inputs unless you reboot the game.
Even though you can fix the music, I would probably recommend playing the remaster. If you can get over how it looks, it has more features, the audio works from the get-go (with the good music, not the MIDI version, no need for mods) and you don't have that (probably unfixable) controller unmapping with alt-tabbing issue.

protontricks 39150 directmusic # enables music (sound effects work out of the box)
# these are needed for tonberry mods
protontricks 39150 vcrun2010 # needed for tonberry texture mods
protontricks 39150 winecfg
# further tweaks are needed with winecfg, check details below
- FIXABLE: Sound effects work but music missing out of the box (check fix in details)
- ONLY AT START: Starting fight scene is out of sync
EXTRA NOTES:
The only proton version that worked with all these: Proton 4.2-9
To fix music: install directmusic and set dsound to built-in:
protontricks 39150 directmusic
protontricks 39150 winecfg
For the music mods to work, you also need to set ddraw to native:
protontricks 39150 winecfg
Mods that depend on Tonberry (which in turn needs VC++ 2010, check instructions) also work if d3d9 is set to native:
protontricks 39150 winecfg
but this may have a huge impact on the game performance outside of battles. The launcher gets stuck after closing the game, so you have to kill it.
protontricks 39150 vcrun2010
protontricks 39150 winecfg
- Gedosato without reshade doesn't seem to work.

- Introduction movie out of sync.
- No music out of the box (needs directmusic). Sound effects work out of the box.
As said by others:

Game works out of the box.
La instalación directa te permite jugar de principio a fin
El sonido no funciona bien pero sé que instalando direct através de wine deberÃa funcionar
Playable from start to finish, though installing directplay and directsound via winetricks is highly recommended
Sound effects work, music does not
Can't alt-tab out of game. Can switch workspace but that sometimes causes slowdowns when going back
Game process keeps running after quitting the game
Didn't play much, but no problems found besides music not playing.
Music is missing, only sound effects playing
Installing direct sound fixes the problem
Alt+tab makes the controller disconnect and it won't connect again until restart

I've used the winetricks like said in previous comments here in protondb: WINEPREFIX="/home//.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/39150/pfx
Sametimes the save games is missed and I coudn't find it in anywhere
When the game is closed the process keeps still running.
The sound problem is fixed with the winetricks but I think that this is the cause of the lost save files. I'll try to play without the sound fix to be sure.
Needs aforementioned tweaks with winetricks and winecfg to get background music up and running. Otherwise game runs perfectly even with Roses and Wine + Ragnarok mods.
In particular, for those like me who stumble upon issues regarding quartz.dll when installing directmusic:
- Open the winetricks script in a editor (
sudo $(which winetricks)
) - Comment the line
w_call quartz
inload_directmusic()
This should skip installing quartz (which seems not necessary to FF8) and proceed the rest of installation normally.

Runs perfectly, Just install winetricks and open console and paste this command "WINEPREFIX="/home//.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/39150/pfx" and select install windows DLL or components, install directplay and music this is make music work, if you want tomberry mods to work just go to winecfg and type "d3d9", the performance drop isn't too noticeable.

No music, otherwise runs fine.
Winetricks installation of directplay and directsound throws errors regarding qasf.dll and quartz.dll. Unable to find a solution.

Runs perfectly aside from sound. Here is how to fix the sound quickly and hassle free for the most part. Install winetricks then use this command WINEPREFIX="/home//.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/39150/pfx" winetricks This will launch you into winetricks. When the window pops up click on select default prefix then click ok. Now select Install a Windows DLL or Component then click okay. Once you are in to the DLL/Component area check the boxes that say Directmusic and Directplay then hit ok. This will install the everything you need for the background music to work. After the install is complete close out of winetricks and launch game.

Music fix works. Deletes save files.

Game runs great visually. There was a desync with the sound during the opening cutscene but it fixed itself once the movie finished. There is currently no music during gameplay but sound effects work fine.

The game runs without background music, sounds still seem to work. The fixes below involving using winetricks to install directmusic only made the game stop launching when I hit play on the launcher.

Tested work-arounds from below and none worked---still playing without sound. Error returning when installing directmusic: regsvr32: Failed to load DLL 'devenum.dll'. No solutions found.

The game works perfectly, however when changing the window ALT + TAB The control will work and also and need to install DirectMusic. In some cases playing in full screen when changing the window ALT + TAB The computer simply freezes so having to reset the cabinet button. Apart from these little problems the game works very well, no choking or anything of the sort.

As mentioned in previous posts: Game runs perfectly, but without music. To get music to play, install winetricks and run the following from a console: WINEPREFIX="/home//.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/39150/pfx" winetricks (This is assuming you installed steam in the default location under your home directory). Select the default wine prefix and install the directmusic component, then "run winecfg"; type and add ddraw and dsound. Set dsound to "builtin" and ddraw to "native". Music and FMV mods work fine with the above tweaks. I spent some hours trying to get the Tonberry mod to work, but was unable to. Playing with an Xbox 360 controller works normally.

Works fine after installing directmusic through winetricks

There's no background music but otherwise the game plays perfectly.

No music. Tried some winetricks directmusic hacks, but that made the game unplayable - doesn't seem to be documented how/if that's possible with proton.

I used the method mentioned in another post to fix the background music. Everything else works perfectly.

To fix the music, first install directmusic using winetricks (WINEPREFIX="/steamapps/compatdata/39150/pfx"), and then set dsound to builtin. For the music mods to work, you also need to set ddraw to native. Mods that depend on Tonberry also work if d3d9 is set to native, but this have a huge impact on the game performance outside of battles. The launcher gets stuck after closing the game, so you have to kill it.

works fine

The game works without problems, except for the music that doesn't work and after i alt-tab the game doesn't recognize the xbox pad anymore.

Fails to start on first run, starts on subsequent runs. No music. Otherwise very stable.

No background music. All other sound effects work.

No music
