The games freezes once in a while. Nothing major, just necessitates a reboot.
Works decently enough
Occassional crashes during loading and black screens when starting cutscenes can be a bit annoying, but overall the game is playable.
Text is readable but a little small. The handwritten font can be changed to a normal one in the options menu though, making it a bit better.
The controls are pretty slow, but that's fortunately not an issue in this game, since there's no quick action involved.
Doesn't launch
Tried different Proton versions (older, GE, experimental) and different launch options suggested here, to no avail.
Got the game to work after a reinstall. Needed some launch option tweak to get it to run smoothly though
VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/radeon_icd.x86_64.json VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr11 VKD3D_FEATURE_LEVEL=12_1 %command% --launcher-skip -skipStartScreen
The VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/radeon_icd.x86_64.json
line is what made my FPS shoot up from a choppy 20 to a smooth 100.
The game still has a significant amount of bugs, but that seems to be a problem with the game itself rather than a Linux issue.
Runs smoothly out-of-the-box
Mouse input not detected when manually placing game on secondary monitor. Fixed by using the in-game setting to run on specific monitor.
Fixed with faudio
Full screen degraded performance
Choppy performance, solved by playing in borderless windowed mode
Doesn't seem to work with any Proton version later than 4.11-13.
Old gamepad not useable.
Play very well out of the box
During some sessions there was some crackling, but not always.
Audio crackling seems to depend on the game sessions, so a simple restart fixes things.
The startup is horrible, but once in-game, it's smooth as butter.
Garish green screens in between scenes, but doesn't impact gameplay.
The game itself plays nicely, but starting the game can be a huge hassle with a sluggish launcher and multiple restarts until you get past the intro screens. (I never fully figured out what did the trick) After that, it's a breeze.
Works great, no setup required
Some of the control bindings get reset after every restart.
Had to set resolution with launch options -width 2560 -height 1440
Besides lack of voice chat, the game is fully playable.
Voice chat doesn't work.
Notifications (when ranking up, etc.) don't show up.
Plays well out of the box
Occasional stutter in the framerate.
Smooth experience
Tabbing out of the game or changing workspaces makes the game lose focus and unplayable and necessitates a restart.
The singleplayer aspects work perfectly, the multiplayer doesn't
Good experience with minimal effort
Shadows act weird during twilight periods in the game.
Graphical settings could only be changed in windowed mode, in full screen the game would lock up. Switched back afterwards without issue.
Runs smoothly out-of-the-box
Start-up splash screen is black, but if you know where to click (upper-left part of the box) to start the game, everything works fine.
Enjoyable without special tweaks
After each driver update it has to redo the vulkan shaders and this causes some slowness the first time playing after this. Nothing major.
Controls are a bit finicky
Controls aren't optimized for the Deck but that doesn't take away any enjoyment of the game.
Runs well, just can't alt-tab out of the game
Some weird black lines all over the screen, once or twice. Shadows can be erratic at times.
Mouse failed to register after tabbing out of game.
Works great, even with mods!
There is no game launcher to activate the workshop items, but they can be added by modifying the modlist.txt file in the /Steam/steamapps/compatdata/494840/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/LocalLow/Deep Water Studio/UBOAT/
folder by adding steam:modnumber
to the list. These modnumbers can be found in the /Steam/steamapps/workshop/content/494840/
folder.
Doesn't work under Proton
Native version works, but has lots of visual artifacts, which make it difficult to play.
Can't get beyond a borked, unusable version of the menu with Proton though, so even worse off than trying native.
Besides lack of changeable controls, a smooth out-of-the-box experience
Can't change controls and a change in keyboard layout also didn't seem to be detected by the game (?). Luckily it was still playable with the arrow keys.
Add WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" %command%
to the launch options to fix audio and start the game with the 64-bit Win7 option.
