Haven't finished the game yet but played for 3 hours without issue. Performance was normal. (Aka, terrible, but that's because my laptop sucks, performance was normal as per what I would get on Windows or Linux however.)
The native Linux version of ARK has a few graphical bugs and is generally speaking lacking in features compared to the Windows version, but otherwise pretty stable and not bad performance wise either. If you can run the Windows version, it's advised to do so, but unfortunately BattlEye is not supported on Proton, so the best report I can give this game running in Proton is Silver. However if you're not playing on official server, this is often not an issue, a dedicated server among friends doesn't need BattlEye and it can be disabled. I did not find I needed any tweaks to get the game to run. The performance isn't great, but the game is simply poorly optimised, that's not really a Proton issue. Only minor issue I encountered was with changing graphical settings, I found every time I changed them the fps would get worse until the game slowed to a crawl, but restarting the game fixed that. If you need to change the settings, ANY setting at all, do a restart after to check performance. Once you've found a nice 'sweet spot' for graphical settings, this shouldn't be an issue.
Game still doesn't appear to launch for me, and hasn't for the last several versions of Proton.
Installs! Runs! Gets to the main menu! And even gets into the game! Unfortunately there appears to be a controller issue, the camera just spins constantly, axis are mismapped or something.
Very playable. I couldn't close the game and it stopped responding to inputs after opening the UPlay overlay, I advise turning that off. But aside from that, it works pretty well. Tested with controller, worked fine.
I just quickly installed and ran this game just to test it out, but I was able to install, run, start the game, and move around in a level without any issues and with default settings. I haven't played the game to completion but it looks pretty stable.
I feel bad giving this game 'Silver', but aside from one tiny issue this game would be otherwise Platinum. First of all, the game absolutely runs and runs without any major performance issues, I have no problem running the game on max settings with great FPS. I haven't noticed any graphical or sound issues at all.
There was a minor issue with my controller..
My logitech controller wasn't detected immediately, but going into the game's properties in Steam and switching 'Steam Input Per-Game Setting' to 'Forced Off' immediately fixed that.
But that isn't the reason why I'm giving this game Silver since I notice a lot of my games seem to require that setting and I'm starting to think maybe I have Steam's controller settings configured incorrectly, and besides that, it's only controller support and easily fixed.
No the reason why I'm giving this game Silver is because sometimes it freezes and crashes. After about 7 hours of gameplay it's happened to me I'd say around 4 times. So about every 1.5 hours.
I'm still playing the game regardless of that and honestly it's not that bad. In DS3 you spend a lot of time dying anyway and returning back to checkpoints so it's not like you ever really lose much progress if it does crash, but it does definitely seem to be an issue.
I haven't ever played this game on Windows but no one on Steam playing on Windows has reported this bug so I think it's Proton/Wine/Linux related.
It's a bit of a shame, because aside from that crash every 2 hours or so, which usually doesn't bother me that much to be honest, the game loads up quickly enough and autosaves constantly, this game would be platinum without any tweaks.
Correction to earlier report, game works fine! (had to restart my PC) Also performance seems to be much better in the latest version of Proton, woohoo.
Ran fine, did the tutorial, all good, except the game itself is dead because the online servers for it have been shutdown.. So, um.. I don't know, not Proton's fault the game is dead for other reasons lol.
Submitting two reports because I had different outcomes depending on Proton version selected. With the latest beta of Proton (see version) this game with my computer configuration doesn't launch at all when I hit 'Play' from the game's launcher. But it does with previous versions of Proton.
Submitting two reports because I had different outcomes depending on Proton version selected. With 3.16-4, this game runs perfectly fine, with some of those minor glitches that others described.
OK so I got the same outcome as anyone else who ran this the first time, you create your character and the game freezes before you can get into the game. So I started to experiment with a few things just to see what works. Tried ESync, disabling D3d11, Wine D3d11, random protontricks, etc. Eventually I encountered something which worked: I disabled my network connection to go offline and ran the game, and tada, hitting continued work!... because the game went into single player offline mode.
It seems whatever the issue is, Generation Zero can not connect to the developer's servers and that is what's causing the freeze. It's worth noting that Just Cause 4 uses the same game engine and has the same issue, which to me is a strong clue that this is something to do with how the engine connects to servers.
So the good news is, if you want to play offline on your own, the game will work it seems, if you want to play with friends you're going to have to wait for a proton update that fixes this. Haven't tried wine yet.
Update on my previous report! You CAN play multiplayer. The game only crashes when you host, but if you 'Join' you can get online. So if you want to play with a friend, and they aren't on Linux, they can host and you can join. Or you can just 'join' a server at random and it'll put you with people and then you could invite a friend. But overall, yeah it more or less works as long as you're not hosting. It also crashed once while playing in that hour, not sure why but I had to do a full reboot to get out of it. I think it was related to zooming in with the binoculars, so if you maybe don't do that you're ok? If you want to play on your own, then just go offline. Overall, ... I don't know, bronze lets say. If it wasn't for the crash I'd say silver since the hosting thing can be worked around pretty easily.
I'm ....... not sure what rating to give this game. .... Borked? Platinum? ..... When I run the game through Proton, it crashes after choosing continue from the main menu. "THEN WHY DIDN'T YOU GIVE IT A BORKED RATING?" I hear you shout through your monitor. Because when I run the game through Windows 7, the game crashes BEFORE it gets to the main menu. This behaviour is reportedly widespread all over the forums and I have confirmed it myself. The question I'm staring at right now is asking me "How would you rate its Steam Play functionality overall?". Well.. I don't know. On one hand, the game is broken and crucially unplayable. On the other hand, the game is also broken and crucially unplayable on Windows, yet Proton seems to run this game even better than Windows 7 ..... ?! .... what do I do here, give Proton points for doing a better job? It feels like 'Borked' is an unfair rating to give when Proton is accurately matching the game's behaviour under Windows. I DON'T KNOW!
I'm giving it all she's got captain but she just keeps crashing with every launch option I can think of!
As others said, disabling ESync immediately fixes the issues and the game runs perfectly fine it seems. I was able to get into GTA Online as well. I did see some odd messages at the start that implied the game was unable to connect to GTA Online, but those messages didn't seem to prevent me from getting online.
Earlier versions needed fixes but with the latest version of Proton I'd say this is just Platinum now. I don't need any launch options for this anymore.
Played it from start to finish. The only issue I had was with my controller, but I fixed that by running the auto calibrate option in Steam's controller settings and that appeared to fix the issue. But aside from that, the game ran perfectly, and I was getting 144fps most of the game (which is the refresh rate of my monitor).
Map any button to F11 and press it when the game launches to make it "fullscreen" to match the screen ratio of the Deck.
Yes the game launches in a windowed portrait layout, you need to press F11 to go fullscreen.
Good news everyone, I know you were all waiting to see if this game works on Linux before switching from Windows, and I can inform you all it appears to work flawlessly.
For some reason, on both computers I tested it on, it didn't run the first time. But when I ran it the second time, it worked perfectly. Not sure what to say about that, but overall definitely Platinum.
Still works on 4.2 and has worked on 3.16 for a long time, no configuration necessary, PLATINUM BABY! WOO!
Tried with and without Wine D3d11, and all versions of Proton available but I face the same issue. Game installs, runs, I can get to the menu, everything appears to be working, but if I choose Campaign from the main menu, the game hangs and doesn't do anything, just uses a lot of CPU cycles while going no where, no file IO either. Unfortunately unplayable for me, and I seem to be just the odd one out.
Installed, run'd, got to the main menu, did a complete single player race, no issues at all, no visible graphical issues, looks platinum to me.
Just a quick test to ensure the game installs, loads and runs, was able to get into gameplay with no issue.
Works like a charm in 3.16-9, although it didn't load in 4.2-3, just stuck forever trying to run.
This is the first time I've ever played Remember Me so I don't know what missing smoke the others are referring to but I haven't noticed it yet. Played for 1.3 hours and absolutely no issues at all, great fps, if all games ran this well on Proton...
Absolutely fine just like the enhanced version, on a GTX 980 and maximum settings I was getting around 70fps.
No issues at all, so far I've only done the training though, but everything worked as expected.
I know some here have said tweaks result in better frame rates, but from my experience I noticed the tweaks seemed to actually reduce the stability of the frame rates. Overall I'd say this game runs optimally out of the box with default settings.
Absolutely perfect, not a single issue. Performance wise, on High settings, at 1080p, with a GTX 980, I get around 60 to 80fps in Vulkhel Guard. I don't think that's much lower than what I was getting on Windows before, if it is maybe by 10%?
I did not see any issues at all, everything appears to work, it loaded my Steam Cloud save as well. Looks platinum to me.
As others said, the game installs, and appears to start, but choosing New Game from the main menu resulted in an immediate crash.
The game runs and I get to the main menu, but it crashes when starting a game.
Latest version of Proton, (4.2-3) borked this game for me, couldn't get to the main menu even. Switching back to 3.16-9 fixed it though. Try 3.16 if you have issues with 4.2.
Played for 15 minutes. Install process was weird and gave an error but clicking OK on everything didn't seem to make a difference. After that the game ran fine and was able to start a level and start cleaning.
Crashes, Freezes
Could not get game to work properly via Steam with any version of Proton. Tried multiple times, tried deleting prefix and retrying, double checked have all dependencies installed.
