First I installed the packages via Protontricks, the DirectX installation script hangs in a loop, I had to kill it through the task manager. And then you need to switch from experimental to version 7.0-6

To get working steering wheel in game, install Steering Wheel Manager - Oversteer.
No difference to Windows, runs perfect - multiplayer not tested

crashes in vr mode
So the game works extremely well in regular mode on Linux, in VR mode it crashes on start with a black screen. It gave an exception error a couple of times, I havent been able to make it replicate that again since though. As I primarily play this game in VR in Windows, thats an issue for me to play this on Linux. Any help is appreciated.

Ran a few laps around Monza GP and sprinted through California Highway and the game ran just as fine as it did on Windows 10.

Game does not start
Every time i start the game i get an error saying:"EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION" at a memory location.
Runs out of the box and works perfect.
HUD mirrors have horizontal strips on them.
Worked out of the box. Sometimes freezes when you exit the game, which is a minor inconvenience.
Sometimes game hangs when quitting, thus having to force quit the game.
Logitech G29 wheel controller was working for menu navigation, but not in the game. Couldn't calibrate wheel or map controls in the settings at first. I then read in another forum to disable "Xbox controller support, Generic controller support and Switch controller support" in Steam controller settings. The wheel suddenly started working, including force feedback. However, when I tried to play the game later again the wheel wasn't working. I tried switching from Proton 5.13-6 to 5.0-10 and the wheel was working again. Just then Glorious Eggroll released Proton 6.5-GE-1 and I decided to try it. From then everything was working perfectly! Wheel works perfectly, FFb works great, performance is absolutely spot on! No glitches or artifacts playing singleplayer.
Only have the issue occasionally with quitting the game. Also had one instance of the game freezing that necessitated a reboot. This was after clicking "replay" in a custom race.
Escaping from fullscreen makes the controller unusable until restarting the game
Works great but had to add -dx9
to the launch options to get it to run, otherwise I got the "unhandled exception trapped" error described by some below. Must have something to do with my older GPU needing DirectX9.
Game is fun to play. Racing wheel Logitech G920 works with force feedback. Logitech Rumblepad2 works with vibration.
Got minor artifacts on water (on USA track) on Ultra settings.
You can't alt+tab back to the game (it will be all black). This could be fixed by switching to windowed mode.

The game seems run better right after a reboot. Also make sure you close all background apps.
I got EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION from time to time (after races) but fixed them somehow (by visual options probably). I think reboots could help with that also.
If you have problems with FFB you could try FFBTools (use as steam argument: "ffbwrap --update-fix /dev/input/by-id/usb-XXX... -- %command%" where XXX = your device)
Though on G920 force feedback works out of the box.

Game loads into a black screen on launch and completely hangs my system requiring a hard restart. Loads perfectly on Proton 4.2.9.
