Excluding the minor hitching, definitely playable at max settings with hardware PhysX turned off
Cutscenes only register ESC to skip and right trackpad changed to left mouse click for the launcher and some menus
Requires manually enabling gamepad support in the settings
Game is unoptimized even on Windows; can't keep a locked 60 FPS no matter the settings
One server gave error ctf-binary-simplex
Unsupported
Make sure to use the default 32-bit game version; changing your launch to the 64-bit version can't seem to reach the same framerates.

Worked great in my testing

Using the "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%" launch options made the game slow down from about 120 FPS to about 25 FPS, but it wouldn't freeze anymore.
In the default DXVK mode, the game freezes the whole system after a while (ranging from a few seconds to doesens of minutes of gameplay).
Tried playing the game with default settings. After a while the whole system freezes. I tried it with Proton 7, 8, Experimental and GE. All of them have the same effect.
The only way I got it working is by using the "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1" command line option. The bad part is that by doing this my FPS dropped to 1/5 of what it was with DXVK.
At this point of time this game is pretty much unplayable for me.
Fun remake of a great classic
Runs very well. Played through multiple times with no issue at full quality
Online seems to be dead, so any multiplayer aspects are left unevaluated for now.
Works but has some issues.
Stutter on initial use of all rocket launchers.
Had a hang on death.
No way in menu to cap FPS, assuming there is some console command you can use.

Game runs fine out of the box with Proton Experimental. The drm update was just released for steam client. (11/20)
Controller works the same as Windows. In some of the menus you have to switch to your keyboard and mouse.

Works great using Proton-GE. Default Proton needs some tinkering to get the launcher to work.

protontricks 217140 dotnet40
Stuttering when loading new assets
You'll have to use Proton 5.0 and protontricks to start an annoying launcher, but after that it runs mostly fine. There are the hick-ups when loading assets but nothing serious.
protontricks 217140 dotnet40
I'm not sure the game is rendering properly. The game is very dark -- some of the darkest areas are displayed as completely black, even when turning up the brightness and tweaking the lighting and shadow settings in all sorts of configurations. Meanwhile, if you increase the brightness, some areas are too bright.
Despite having framerates in the hundreds, the gameplay suffers from inconsistent framerates on NVIDIA hardware. It's mostly better if you turn VSync on in the game's settings.
Custom levels from the workshop make the game get stuck in a loading screen loop. The loading screen appears, then disappears as if the map is loaded, but then the loading screen appears again and this happens ad nauseam.
I tried newer versions of Proton (5.11, 5.13, Proton Experimental) but installation of dotnet40 through protontricks fails entirely on those versions. It seems to get through the .NET installer but then afterwards the terminal output indicates the change was aborted. The launcher, unfortunately, requires .NET 4.0. So make sure you run this game specifically on 5.0 versions of Proton.

Start the game (not the 64-bit), it will fail. Use protontricks to fix it:
'protontricks 217140 dotnet40'
Game runs very well.
protontricks 217140 dotnet40
protontricks 217140 dotnet40 and then I only tried single player.

The game will not run because the launcher requires Net4.0. This is remedied with the following command : protontricks 217140 dotnet40
You can run the game using the below answer and fix it in /tmp but this is more permanent and can be launched using the Steam UI. You can now also configure the game. Ran perfect 5/5. Configure to your specs.

This still does not work without big tweaks. Look before for a example of how to get it to work.

- Set launch options to: PROTON_DUMP_DEBUG_COMMANDS=1 %command%
- Run the game
- Navigate to /tmp/proton_yourusername/
- Edit the run file with your favorite text editor. Change the DEF_CMD line to DEF_CMD=(“/path/to/steamapps/common/Rise of the Triad/Binaries/Win64/ROTT.exe”)
- Launch the run file while Steam is running (you may want to copy it to a more permanent location so that it is not overwritten)
Note that the steam overlay will not work using this setup.

Nothing, doesn't load.

Does not work!

Does not start

Game won't start at all, have not tested any of the tweaks

Game does not start, displays a black screen then promptly closes

Tried PROTON_USE_WINED3D11 and PROTON_NO_D3D11. Neither helped.

Game does not run

It uses a .NET launcher.
