The game runs very slow without the proper thinkering, so a typical linux gamer that doesnt know how to thinker, would not enjoy it...

A lot of input lag.
The game runs at 15 fps , even at the lowest graphic config possible.
It can be played online but, the game runs very slow!
The game is technically unplayable, it runs at 15 fps max to me, and with a lot of input lag.

PROTON_USE_WINED3D10=1 %command% -novid
Infrequent stutters and framerate drops
You need to set some launch flags for this to work with experimental.

The game would crash upon switching levels until I disabled "Multi Thread Rendering" in the settings.
The game wouldn't start until I switched to Proton 5.0-10. Crashing would occur at level changes but disabling "Multi Thread Rendering" in the settings fixed that. Worked fine after that.

slight input delay and sensitivity problems
Good multiplayer on official servers
Offline/LAN gameplay good too
It works, but not so enjoyable

-novid

PROTON_USE_WINED3D10 = 1% command% -novid
Audio sometimes get cropped out.
Subtitles sometimes get cropped out.
Game lag is possible.
Game lag is possible.
For how much Valve has pushed for Linux support on Steam, it's strange that the first Left for Dead was well... left for dead for both Mac and Linux support. With some game lag and audio/visual bugs, the game still plays well at a passable pace. I wish that Valve would come back to this for proper native support. You may have to include the window command to get past the first loading screen for additional launch commands.
PROTON_USE_WINED3D10 = 1% command% -window -novid

Works Flawlessly
Sometimes when changing resolution it may end up off-centered

"But 144 stable is enough" is not good, I want my hardware to be used properly, otherwise it's more work for the same result, or less...
-windowed
Sometimes it "bites": it either goes out for a moment or it crackles.
The framerate caps at my monitor's top. Makes it difficult to test out performance properly. Only Windowed 1440p allowed me to get the proper test going to compare 1 to 1 with Windows 10.
1440p, EVERYTHING except Vsync maxxed, the game should RARELY hit 100% GPU use because it just does not do that on Windows 10. Different Protons (3.16-9 & Experimental) work with the same result, mostly. This version is "the most stable vanilla option I have found".
Sometimes, when deciding the version of Proton, either the color range gets reduced (looks compressed) or the rendering just breaks; one time something went wrong and a windows-crash_Blue "big pixels flood" rendered over some things on the screen when going fullscreen to windowed.
I would really like to just find, written in bold, BIG 172 dimention letters, "Here's THE Proton version which just makes Source Games run as well as on Windows". Source games only act like this consistently, because W40Ksm2 and Helldivers 2 just go as well as on Windows, and outliers like War Thunder are a beast of their own.

At first I was stuck on the loading screen, but I restarted my pc and the game worked fince since then

Some fire effects have a wierd black blob overlay around them. Shader issue?
Crashed one time, don't know if it was proton related. Ran out of memory after finishing map. Not that serious
Game will not launch unless you specifically use Proton 3.16-9. Once switched, boots and runs absolutely smooth. Minor graphical bugs.

PROTON_USE_WINED3D10 = 1% command% -window -high
had to use older version of proton and this launch options PROTON_USE_WINED3D10 = 1% command% -window -high, also lowered graphics and it works great.

PROTON_USE_WINED3D11 = 1% command% -window -noborder -w 960 -h 540
The only way I was able to run it on Kubuntu 24.04 was with PROTON_USE_WINED3D11 = 1% command% -window -noborder -w 960 -h 540. After playing for some time, it frozen. Will try with different proton.

Microfreezes in the middle of singleplayer
Freezes for less than a second occasionally in the middle of a singleplayer map, only while moving on foot and rotating the camera.

Fullscreen is off-centered. Might just be a problem with my setup.
Seems borked for me on expiremental, but works on the latest (9.0-2 as of writing)

-w 1920 -h 1080
I am really surprised that there was no Linux native version of this game.
You will have to add the launch option otherwise the game would crash at once. For some reason (at least for me) the game does not default to my resolution, so I had to set it myself.
-w is the width and -h is the height, you can set your resolution accordingly.
Really great game, even though the game does not have the best storyline, it does have great gameplay. You can play this with friends, co-op through the levels, if you do not want to play singleplayer. I played the majority in singleplayer and I am looking forward to play the 2nd version of this game.

-w 1920 -h 1080
Doesn't launch without specifying screen resolution

Played on a friends-only Survival lobby hosted on an official Valve server
No additional setup required. Just select Proton Experimental in Compatibility and start playing.

Must use -windowed when booting for the first time. After going into settings and switcing to fullscreen the tag can be removed The game was choppy until i switched to proton 8

runs as well as i wouldve expected
about 40fps at 720p lowest settings about what i expected considering the specs

i had to run -windowed on first launch to get the game to even work without glitching but after that i could change my settings and set it back to fullscreen and its been fine since
weird starting bug but other than it was fine

Flawless OOTB with Proton
you can see your feet in this game

Starts good (singleplay, ok 4:3 screen)
Played with Proton 8.0-5.

-w 1366 -h 768
I had to enter the launch options otherwise it only plays sound but entering the launch options fixes the problem
also tried with proton 8 and exp same results launch options essential

It works pretty great. I switched to experimental but it possibly works okay on normal proton. No tinkering is really required, at least for me. A very good experience!

had to type "-w 1920 -h 1080" in the launch settings to set my resolution

-novid
I was able to play online with no issues.
There is no issues running out of the box, even for low end hardware. (low end, as in 2018 or later)

-w 1920 -h 1080
Screen was black when I 1st launched the game. Audio still worked. Seems to be a common issue. Was fixed after going into launch options, then setting the game resolution to match my monitor's resolution.

I genuinely did not realize that Left 4 Dead didn't have a native Linux version until going to ProtonDB. That's how well it ran for me.
-w 1920 -h 1080
No issues
-w 1920 -h 1080
Screen was black on first launch, but audio was working. This happened because of a resolution issue that had to be solved by setting the game resolution to match my monitor's resolution in the launch options.

Fonts may not render correctly. K's look like <'s for example. Simple fix. Install corefonts, lucida, and tohoma to l4d1's wine prefix. Lucida console is used for the console, tahoma is used for chat. Should fix most of it. Or you can replace the font by editing the sourcescheme.res or chatscheme.res files, they are loose so dont need to unpack a vpk. "winetricks corefonts lucida tahoma" copy paste to l4d1's wine prefix or use protontricks.
Alt tabbing and letting the map load while alt tabbed will break certain transparent textures, like fences and decals. Alpha clip textures, not translucency. Also had this happen to me on windows but its very rare on that platform. I've gotten it to consistanlty happen by alt tabbing. Next map load willfix it.
Freezes when alt tabbing for a second then resumes. On windows fullscreen would freeze it forever so whatever. Also the above problem may go here instead, I suppose.
Other keyboard types don't type properly when in game. They do work in the main menu console. игддірше, will show up as ????????. Typing outside of the game and copy pasting will work.
It likes to grab servers from peru! open the server browser, find a low ping empty server, copy the ip. mm_force_dedicated_servers to force the lobby to use that server. Also an issue on windows, used to not happen.
I noticed my ping for local servers displayed as a 1. Usually its a 5. Not sure if this is somehow because of linux, or a difference with L4D1 over 2. I'll have to test further.
gamemoderun mangohud %command%
I played co-op with a friend, no connection issues happened.
Just install and play.
Works straight out of the box with Steam and Proton.

Runs pretty well OOTB.
Had an issue when starting the game for the first time where all of the screen was black except for the HUD. Restarting the game fixed the issue.
