General
- It was an excellent experience. After the initial adjustments to the game's resolution, I didn't have any further issues.
The game has some connection/synchronization issues between players actions in some areas.
Also, some minor collision and gameplay issues.
I can't say for sure if these are issues with the game itself or with compatibility in the Linux environment.
It's a simple and interesting co-op game.
mangohud gamemoderun %command% --skip-launcher
Artifacts of luminosity and small dark cubes appear in some moments of the game.
Alt-tabbing in Fullscreen mode, using DXVK, crashes the game (Assertion failed!).
First act is perfectly optimized (~60 FPS stable). Second and especially Third act are heavier performance-wise (~40-50 FPS).
It usually crashes while I was organizing inventory or talking to NPCs.
During Act 1 -- Underdark -- Grymforge, using Vulkan, getting close to lava was extremely heavy (~10-25 FPS). It was necessary to change to DXVK to continue playing this part.
Tested with Proton-Experimental[bleeding-edge] and GE-Proton8-14, GE-Proton8-16.
About using DXVK or Vulkan (in my case):
DXVK: seems heavier (high GPU and high VRAM usage). Normally, when it comes to in-game focus (cutscenes, inventory), the game's performance becomes quite heavy, making it necessary to return to the main menu or even close the game.
Vulkan: playing with Proton-Experimental [bleeding-edge] may crash in cutscenes and when leveling up characters. So far, playing with GE-Proton (8-14 or 8-16) there have been no crashes in these previous cases.
Played in coop mode with a friend (also in a Linux environment).
For me, it was better to play with GE-Proton8-16, using Vulkan, in 1080p windowed fullscreen. Played in Custom settings (Shadows, Texture Filter and Animation Detail Level on Low; Texture on Ultra; Depth of Field disabled; everything else on High). DLSS in performance mode.
It's an excellent game, and it works almost perfectly.

- It was necessary for me, edit the Shared.ini file in the config files folder, to adapt to the resolution of my environment.
StartupFullscreen=True
ViewportX=1920
ViewportY=1080
- Also, unlike BioShock 1 Remastered, here the 2k launcher had a problem and displayed a generic error screen:
Game Failed To Start
. I added the above command to skip the launcher.
Alt-tabbing is problematic in this game. Sometimes it gets a little sluggish or doesn't even go back.
The game froze frequently, about 8 times during the entire game.
Apparently it is related to the video card driver or the kernel I had installed.
(nvidia 560.35.03 and linux 6.10.6.arch1-1).
When I changed to an older version (nvidia 555.58.02 and linux 6.10.5.arch1-1), the freezing did not occur again.
Played with Proton-Experimental [bleeding-edge] in 1080p fullscreen with 60 FPS stable.
Played the entire game and the downloadable content Minerva's Den.
After adjusting the resolution in the config files, skipping the 2k launcher, and downgrading the nvidia driver/linux kernel to avoid screen freeze, I didn't have any other problems and was able to play the game perfectly.

Config files folder: steamapps/compatdata/8870/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/My Games/BioShock Infinite/XGame/Config/
- After the 2k launcher, the game opens in a small black window and crashes. I had to fix the initial resolution through the XUserOptions.ini file in the game's config folder (for some reason the values were -1 by default).
DefaultResolutionX=1920
DefaultResolutionY=1080
- I changed the FOV offset (even though I don't need it for the game to work), also in the XUserOptions.ini:
MaxUserFOVOffsetPercent=28.570000
The audio sometimes crackles. Using PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60
command in the launch options and avoiding pausing the game/alt-tabbing seems to solve this issue.
Blurry Textures. For me, the game's textures were always blurry. Using the -DisableTexturePool
in the launch options solved it.
The game crashed seven times with the 'Rendering thread exception'. This usually occurred when loading areas (after the loading screen or after interacting with an object/item to progress through the game).
Played with Proton-Experimental [bleeding-edge] in Ultra settings, 1080p windowed fullscreen with 60 FPS stable.
I quickly tested the native version of the game, but the performance is extremely bad. Constant stuttering makes the experience unplayable natively. I strongly recommend playing using some version of Proton.

Despite the frustrating issues that accumulated into my playthrough, it's a phenomenal game with satisfying shooter gameplay and an incredibly well written narrative.

A small note, the game received a last downloadable content in 2019, which is not available for the native version of the game. So if you have the downloadable content and want to play on linux, you need to switch to some version with Proton.
I had a moment where the sound (of gunshots, dialogues) was muffled. Only restarting the game completely solved it (quit and loading hadn't solved it).
Stutterings. Nothing too frequent and it didn't bother me during the game.
Subtitles. There are times when the subtitles do not appear or the text that appears refers to a previous audio.
Played with Proton-Experimental [bleeding-edge] in Custom settings (most options on Low, but mainly Texture Streaming on Ultra), 1080p windowed fullscreen with 60 FPS.
Some reporters recommend using -notexturestreaming
instead of setting the Texture Streaming on Ultra. I tried, but it made the performance much worse.
Also, I didn't notice any major differences between DX11 (dxvk) and DX12 (vkd3d). But in DX12, the game takes longer to load. I preferred to play with DX11.

Without the Steam Overlay, i was not able to use the controller.
In the open world, the performance is pretty heavy.
Basically, the game starts by opening an EasyAntiCheat window, which receives the steam overlay and when this process closes and stays in the background, the overlay ends up going with it and not returning to when the game actually opens. Following normally, I was able to use the game's online mode smoothly, but without the Steam Overlay .
To use Steam Overlay, I had to run the following command:
cp start_protected_game.exe stpg.exe.bak
cp eldenring.exe start_protected_game.exe
In short, the command causes steam to launch the game without having to open the EasyAntiCheat window. But obviously, not validating the online resources and making it impossible to use the online mode.

DLSS frame generation issue?
While playing this game, sometimes the GPU hits 100% usage with ~20-30 FPS. It is necessary to return to the main menu or even close and open the game again to return to normal. This same problem happened to me while I was playing Baldur's Gate 3 (but there I managed to solve it by switching to Vulkan or completely disabling DLSS).
So far, I haven't found anyone with this same problem, so I don't know for sure if it's linked to DLSS, or for another reason.
Overview
Played with Proton-Experimental [bleeding-edge] in Very High settings, 1080p borderless fullscreen with dx11. DLSS frame generation active in balanced mode.
With this settings and my hardware, the game ran between ~50-60 FPS.

The game is excellent, but has several problems in the Native version. I recommend playing with Proton to have a better experience.
Native config files folder: .local/share/Psychonauts/
- At the first time, the game did not open with Proton, giving the following error:
The game was unable to create the Direct3D device
. Apparently the game would generate a DisplaySettings.ini file where the graphics options would be, but since the game did not open, it was not generated. - To solve it, I started the game natively and got this same file from the config files in the native folder, and pasted it into the game's installation folder.
Only then was I able to open and play the game with Proton.
Native
Sometimes the audio stops and returns one second later. Using the PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60
command in the launch options makes it less likely to happen.
Native
Default control mapping is horrible, I needed to modify the 'Profile 1- Raz.ini' file, and I set the controls as (suggested in other reports):
Jump_Alt=Joy1
Attack_Alt=Joy4
Use_Alt=Joy3
Cancel_Alt=Joy2
Journal_Alt=Joy10
Stats_Alt=Joy9
LookUp_Alt=JoyRotY
LookDown_Alt=JoyRotY
LookLeft_Alt=JoyRotX
LookRight_Alt=JoyRotX
Proton
The default controls are better, but there is a problem where opening the game or even just going to the main menu causes the bindings to reset to a different configuration. Using the default bindings option in the game options returns them to the expected default. Apparently with Proton, the game does not get the bindings from the 'Profile 1- Raz.ini' file in the folder where the game is installed. The file does not undergo any changes.
Native
Does not support Steam Cloud saves.
Native
I had a bug where the character has multiple instances, and his shadow overlaps in several places on the map. Disabling shadows completely in the game options solved it, but sometimes this bug is noticeable on maps where Raz's footprints interact with the environment. Apparently this shadow/instance bug is related to the native OpenGL version, as the same thing didn't happen in DXVK when I tested it with Proton.
Considerations
Native
- I played about 2 hours in the native version of the game with OpenGL. I had several problems as mentioned and I do not recommend playing natively.
Proton
- Playing with Proton seems to be more stable, although there are still issues with the controls (but it doesn't have the audio, shadows/OpenGL issues of the native version).
