Had some performance issues at first but switching V-Sync off helped drastically. Runs great at 2160p with ultra settings. Using AMD FSR 2.2 as well, the quality difference is hardly noticeable compared to FSR 1.0. Helped with some FPS dips I was experiencing. Some performance loss in split-screen but that's to be expected, it overall feels on par with Windows, maybe even a little better in my case.
Runs perfectly with great performance (and one caveat)
Only functions with one monitor in use! Spent a lot of time tinkering just to realize the game will not display correctly with a second monitor in use. Runs perfectly when turned off. Very functional, albeit annoying. Not sure if this is a CS2 thing or a Wayland thing. Hopefully fixed in the future.
Game uses a modified renderer wine can't open. Some fixes mentioned in page seem to work for people but I couldn't get it to work.
Have tried .dll replacements mentioned in this page and all fixes. None of them seem to work for me. Still get a black screen after the splash images.
With how old this game is now, you're better off just booting up a minimal windows vm and playing through that. At least in my experience, couldn't get past black screen. Tried valve proton, and GE, .dll replacements in page, and opengl32 patcher.
Runs practically native. Make sure Proton BattlEye runtime is installed. Also must run command sudo sysctl -w vm.max_map_count=1048576
Runs and functions great online under proton experimental. Needs Proton BattlEye Runtime installed in steam for functionality. You also have to enter command "sudo sysctl -w vm.max_map_count=1048576" in terminal before playing each time on system startup. Thought game was broken when it crashed connecting to a server until I realized.
Runs as well as it would on Windows. No major issues or tinkering needed. Mods are perfect as well.
Was able to run the GMDX mod installer with Wine. It installed just fine and runs whenever I launch the game through Steam. I was able to find my steam install with the games folder through the wizard under the Z: drive if that might help anyone. There was significant slowdown using Direct3D in the video config settings, OpenGL doesn't have this issue. The Audio is really quiet overall for some reason, and the sound settings in-game do not work. I just turned up my speaker and headphone volume while playing to supplement this, not really a dealbreaker issue. Overall it runs very well out of the box, even just Vanilla.
Works fine and plays great with the controller, didn't have to tweak the layout. Just use touchscreen for the launcher, make sure to untick the directx11 option to avoid blurry text. Didn't have any issues overall, only an occasional stutter entering different areas. I'd consider this one practically verified.
Runs perfectly overall using 6.3-8, make sure you install with Proton, the Native version is very buggy.
Only problem I had is a drastic fps drop when running with ultra textures. Goes down to 5-10 fps. Switching to Very High fixed this for me, runs smoothly at 70-90 fps on my system. The difference is barely noticeable. Not sure what causes this, others seem to have this issue too.
Note: Before you launch the game if you're using any gamepad, first go to steam settings and then under the controller tab click 'desktop configuration.' Then under controller templates click 'gamepad.' If you don't do this your gamepad will not function when launching the game.
Have had no hiccups with multiplayer functionality using the bleeding edge beta for Proton Experimental.
In comparison to the constant performance hiccups I was getting through my Windows experience, Proton has been superior! Glad to see the latest update has fixed the Anti-cheat issues. Using the bleeding edge beta I have had zero issues in my time playing minus one crash. Have played a good amount of multiplayer co-op and PvP as well with no issue. Playing this on launch with Windows was giving me massive performance drops which weren't consistent with my hardware, and Proton has basically erased that. Serious props to the people constantly making Proton better!
Starts up on white screen sometimes or hangs.
Have played extensive co-op and pvp, no issues.
During launch, played with bleeding edge proton for a while. Only works with GE 7-9 now. Not sure why, but this is the only version that actually launches the game on my machine after I switched linux installations and reinstalled the game. Others on reddit seem to have the same issue specifically with GE. I was using 7-9 at the time. Newer versions like 7-10 or 7-14 immediately crash to a white screen. Valve proton has the same issue. Have tried fresh game installs a few times so far but no luck, still only functions on 7-9. Might update report if I try out more fixes. It still runs fine however with each update. Some stuttering in the open-world. Not using gamemode in the launch options helped a bit, seems like a 6700xt related issue. Usually get consistent 60fps at 2k. I have problems with dips and stuttering on my windows installation, so still a better experience overall.
Works well with Proton GE. Be aware of using lqx (or any custom) kernel, broke newer versions of GE as well as valve proton versions.
mangohud gamemoderun %command%
Was having issues playing with the lqx (liquorix) kernel installed. Game was only functional under Proton GE version 7-9 until I reverted back to the default manjaro kernel. Newer versions of GE and any Valve version crashed on startup. Now Valve's proton and newer releases of GE are functional, latest version of GE has been my go-to. Experimental plays well too. Overall it plays identical to windows.
More info from this thread: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/6051 Seems to be affecting Arch-based distro's mainly, Elden Ring isn't the only game affected. Downgrading the relevant packages from the thread temporarily fixes EAC, but I wouldn't recommend it. You'll end up having a broken Arch install on reboot; I ended up having to chroot into my drive from a live iso to fix it. Generally not a good idea for your OS's functionality as a whole. Just wait for the next GLIBC update (hopefully.)
Have had no issues running out of the box with proton experimental. Performance has been great, haven't felt the need to use something like gamemode in the launch settings. I get less lag versus playing on windows in comparison. I only had one issue when attempting to summon a player, I got a message saying I will get logged out due to "suspicious activity." Not sure why this happened, I simply restarted the game and I haven't had the issue since. Must be a quirk with the anti-cheat I imagine. I haven't been too worried about it since.
Proton Experimental seems to solve common user issues with instability. Haven't had a single crash or problem with gameplay and cutscenes throughout playing on the Deck. I just use the touchscreen for the game launcher. You will have to change the resolution here as it's set to the smallest by default and will crash. I can't attest to X-2's experience as I haven't played it yet. One small issue is that you can't access the in-game system menu with the bonus features using a controller (Need the Esc key.) This is also a problem playing on PC anyhow. You can probably fix this by remapping buttons but I didn't find it was something I needed while playing. Overall a good experience I'd say.
7.0rc6-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Used Proton-7.0rc6-GE-1
Had no issues overall using GE proton, runs and performs as it would on windows. Other versions of Proton might give you issues, so GE is your best bet (7.0rc6-GE-1 worked the best in my testing.)
Used to work, just get Ubisoft connection error now.
Was working fine when I played a few months back. Ubisoft launcher refuses to connect now. Can't get game to launch in offline mode either. Update must've broke it, tried multiple versions of proton including GE.
AMD_VULKAN_ICD=RADV gamemoderun %command%
Crashes frequently enough to not be enjoyable
Multiplayer features perfectly functional
Didn't have any issues versus Windows besides random crashes at any given point in the game. Performance was on par, gamepad worked perfectly, no audio or online issues otherwise. Tried different proton versions and configurations with the same results. Would love to recommend installing on Linux, but it's still not there unfortunately. Not so much fun when you crash in the middle of a race or at a loading screen.
Had worse performance vs W10, but still playable w/ lower graphics. Might be a problem on my end (no tweaks.)
Noticed some visual tearing and minor artifacts.
Noticed some input lag occasionally. Wasn't a deal-breaker though.
Used to play Very High-Ultra at 2k on Windows10 (low MSAA), had to switch to 1080p w/ Very High-High settings & no MSAA to get 60fps.
Had occasional crashes initially tweaking graphics settings. Once I was done with that I haven't had one since.
Game is playable at 60fps although I had to switch from Very High-Ultra 2K (low MSAA) to High-Very High 1080p (no MSAA.) Noticed some occasional screen tearing/input lag as well but It's still very playable, both Single and Multiplayer. No issues with Launcher either (all of my cloud data synced as well.) Only using Proton 6.20GE through Steam Launcher. I'm a new Linux user recently, I'm just happy It's playable and looks fine.
Works perfectly fine out of the box handheld and docked.
Had no issues whatsoever with the Native version, performance and graphics were fine as well. Used an Xbox one gamepad while playing docked with no issues. If you're looking to buy, would recommend this version over the newer Remastered which seems to have some performance and compatibility issues through Linux. This one looks better anyways in my opinion.
Works fine out of the box for the deck both handheld and docked
Had no issues with the native version at the highest settings docked with a gamepad. Handheld seemed fine as well. Can't attest to it's desktop Linux experience as people seem to be reporting issues there. Great on the deck though.
RADV_DEBUG=nodcc gamemoderun %command%
Running perfectly on highest graphical settings, didn't need to use AMDFSR. Noticed some graphical artifacts in shadows when first running. RADV_DEBUG=nodcc seems to have fixed it. Frequent crashes using Proton GE, forced experimental has been stable. Gamemode helped with performance as well. Controllers working fine. Seems to be a good Proton experience overall. Didn't notice any difference compared to a Windows install.
Works perfectly out of the box with every proton version I tested. Can even install the directors cut patch using the wine prefix
Note: I tested the de-listed 2016 version of this game, as far as I know It basically functions the same. I was able to use Lutris as well to install the directors patch .exe files flawlessly using the games wine prefix. This should also be possible within steam itself using proton if you don't prefer using Lutris. Had no issues overall.
Plays fine, no problems at all.
Just used default proton to play, no tinkering. Even the de-listed 18+ patch installs and functions fine using wine and the games prefix.
Works fine out of the box
Didn't have any issues running and playing as is. An occasional slowdown at times but nothing I'd complain about. Otherwise, don't pay full price for this game. Aggressive micro-transactions, and also there's the fact that this is a last-gen port rushed onto PC.
Worked fine until the latest GNOME update
Seems to have issues with windowing in the latest version of GNOME. Have tried Alt-Tabbing and other methods, but have been unable to display the game. It used to display and play fine. Perfectly functionable game on Linux otherwise, just not with the latest GNOME DE version anymore. Be wary if you're a GNOME user.
Only used Proton Experimental, didn't bother trying anything else as it was perfectly functional. I only play single-player modes so I didn't try much online, but it was able to connect fine. I'd imagine it all works. My only issue was shaders taking a good amount of time to load before getting into the game, as well as stuttering in cutscenes/when you're not playing on the court. From what I've seen, this is also somewhat prevalent on Windows currently. Overall, it's perfectly functional on Linux, there are even settings labeled for the steam deck in the game options; so I imagine it works fine there as well.
Works great so far on the deck. The ideal way to play the next gen version of this game handheld.
Some text in menus and mycareer was small and hard to read but not completely illegible
Just used proton experimental as a default, no tinkering was really required on my end. Just turn off the resolution scaling in video settings as it's turned on by default and looks pretty bad. Game runs fine with it off. Some menu text can be hard to read or blurry but it isn't illegible. This is the ideal way to play this game next gen handheld compared to the poor legacy switch port.
Worked fine out of the box. No tinkering required.
Runs practically native, even detected my xbox-one controller just fine. No issues.
Only Proton version that worked for me was 6.19-GE-2, every other version was borked. Had an issue with stuttering back when I was using Windows 10, now it's gone! If anything this version works better for me.
gamemoderun mangohud %command%
Have had a few random crashes. Not frequent, autosaves have helped.
Didn't have issues with multiplayer
Overall it's functional and plays well. Good performance at ultra-high settings at 2560x1440. No MSAA. 60-70+ fps. Occasional FPS dips usually stay in the 50s. Was having issues with graphical artifacts through Valve's Proton, latest GE seems to have fixed it. Gamemode seems to have helped performance overall as well. Good experience for me.
Linux native version was buggy and overall slow on performance. Valve's proton made it playable, but prone to random crashes frequently in my experience. Latest version of GE runs how native should. Overall it's stable, no issues with mods, multiplayer, cloud saves, or performance either. Identical to windows. Only issue I've had is opening the steam overlay occasionally crashes the game.
gamemoderun %command%
No issues running out of the box and playing matches online. My Xbox gamepad and fightstick both had no issues. I had some performance hiccups with my games settings changing between matches. I found that using gamemode and tweaking settings in CoreCtrl helped this drastically. It's a perfectly fine experience overall. I have not felt the need to try it with windows in comparison.
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libtcmalloc.so %command%
Arch users now need to manually Install lib32-gperftools from the AUR or game will crash on startup. Requires launch options as well. Should be fine still on other distros. More details here https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Source-1-Games/issues/5043
Works perfectly on OpenGL legacy version. Crashes otherwise. Hard reset required.
Crashes when connecting to server unless using Open-GL legacy version
Plays and runs perfectly on the OpenGL legacy launch option in my case. Otherwise it will just crash KDE when sending client info to a server. Main Menu text also appears jumbled in this case for some reason. No launch options helped or fixed the issue, including the 'LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libtcmalloc.so %command%' option upon installing lib32-gperftools from the AUR. Really not sure what the issue is in this case, but OpenGL seems perfectly functional for the time being. Hopefully an update fixes this or something. I didn't have performance issues with it either as some here describe. This could be related but it shouldn't be the case with my kernel I believe. https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/3343
Native works great for me. Playing with proton breaks a few things.
No music and a dysfunctional steam overlay using proton. Installing Dotnet48 didn't fix it for me either. Native seems to be working best, haven't experienced any issues with it like others have mentioned. Cloud saves work as well.
Only tested with Proton GE. Worked fine. No tinkering or launch options necessary in my experience. No issues with Origin either, although the overlay functions pretty wonky so I wouldn't recommend using it (not that you should anyways.) Other than that, perfectly playable.
No problems whatsoever launching it default.
Sometimes the mouse would appear on screen while using the gamepad but It would go away. Has the same issue on windows anyways. Overall it plays fine.
Works perfectly fine out of the box, requires a console command for Season 1 save import.
Had no issues overall playing the game. If you want to import your Season 1 save file however, you need to go into desktop mode and peform this command in Konsole: cp -r ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/207610/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My\ Documents/Telltale\ Games/The\ Walking\ Dead ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/261030/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My\ Documents/Telltale\ Games/The\ Walking\ Dead
Would reccomend just opening firefox and copy and pasting this command directly to avoid the pain of the deck keyboard.
No real issues in OpenGL
Was able to host a server with friends, no issues.
Performance suffers greatly under Vulkan, practically unplayable. OpenGL works perfectly however, with no noticeable differences between the two. I haven't noticed any issues running native overall.
gamemoderun %command%
Haven't had any issues playing with GE. Has some stuttering but still consistent performance at 2k. Would say it functions perfectly well.
Only runs on Proton 3.16-9. Same issue running vanilla without the patch. Would highly recommend having it.
-game Unofficial_Patch
Used wine to run the unnoficial patch (https://www.moddb.com/mods/vtmb-unofficial-patch/downloads) .exe file. No tinkering required, found the games path under the 'Z:' drive within the patcher.
Only runs for me through older versions of Proton, plays perfect overall. Started minimized in the center of the screen at first but it was fixed once I changed video settings.
Overall didn't have any issues or needed tweaks, can run a little hot at times. Battery life was about 3 hours on default settings unplugged. Changing performance and battery settings could probably mitigate this, not a huge issue. Looks and runs great on medium-high settings. Very fun on the deck.
Practically native. Plays perfectly.
Automatically detected gamepad controls. Runs practically native. Feels like a better mobile version than the Google Play or iOS ports.
