Slight lag on initial loading, smoothed out once in game.
Game occasionally crashed on exit. To prevent risk of lost progress since last autosave, simply enter the code saveworld into the console prior to exiting.
The loading screens shows colored bars and static on Proton 6.3 (latest as of this post) similar to like when a TV loses TV service. Does not appear to affect gameplay and was not happening till recently but if you see this and it bothers you, force the use of Proton 5.13 and it goes away.
Game occasionally crashed on exit. To prevent risk of lost progress since last autosave, simply enter the code saveworld into the console prior to exiting. (As of this report this has not happened for some time, but just be aware.)
Works great except for some minor issues
Not fullscreen by default - can be changed in game settings.
At startup the loading screen hangs even though the game has loaded. Pressing Alt-Tab and then cancelling it brings you to the main menu.
Playable with some oddities described below
All characters in game including the player have duplicate starting items (town centre, scout, etc). In regicide mode this includes the king. Unknown what the ramifications of having 2 kings are. Aside from that it doesn't really seem to affect playability, just very odd.
Should be enjoyable for most players who can get over the oddities. Needs more experimenting to learn the full scope of having duplicate starting items, but I foresee no game breaking problems except possibly in Regicide mode where you have 2 kings.
Works great out of the box, just don't mess with Proton versions if it is already working for you!
Make sure to only use FXAA setting for AA. Higher settings will result in large bars across your screen.
Fullscreen was not operational by default. Simply adjust the resolution to the correct setting for your monitor (1920x1080 for me) and it goes straight into fullscreen.
Uplay threw an error after downloading. Simply end the game and start it again. This issue does not recur.
When you exit the game it shows it is still running in the Steam app. Just be sure to press Stop after closing the game.
If you change the Proton version after first launch, Uplay will refuse to start, causing the game to fail to launch. To fix this you must find Uplay in the .steam folder and delete it, triggering a redownload of Uplay.
Game sits on a windowed black screen and must be force killed
Game is now unplayable via Epic Games on Lutris. Also this is not listed on Steam as a native Linux game. This needs to be corrected on Protondb.
Does not launch in full screen initially. Can be fixed in game settings.
On any Linux system other than Steam OS, this game initially installs as a native game, even though Steam doesn't list this game as having a native binary. The native version is borked and you must manually force Proton to be used. This is handled automatically on the Steamdeck, however. I simply used the latest stable Proton as of the time of this review and it worked perfectly.
Some reviews indicate using cloud saves while offline may cause the game to crash. I have not encountered this as I am almost always online. However, ensure you have a strategy should you want to play offline, such as logging out of said cloud account before attempting to play offline.
The game starts with the screen offset to the right and downwards cutting off a significant portion of the right and bottom of the screen. It's essentially unplayable in this state. An option to run in windowed mode would be ideal as it runs fine on desktop Linux in this state.
While the game technically works and launches just fine and should in theory be playable, the offset screen with no way to fix it nullifies this. Play on desktop Linux instead. It's a great game!
Text can be a bit small. Did not hinder gameplay for me but if you have vision problems it may be problematic.
It works great, however a mouse is strongly recommended. Keyboard is optional but if you use shortcut keys a lot, you will want it.
Works great out of the box, just don't use full screen!
Some of the music occasionally was crackling in main menu. Seemed to smooth out once entering gameplay. (This could also be because the menu music is insanely loud and can't be adjusted but this is a game issue, not a Proton issue.)
Full screen is glitchy and caused buttons to be offset, that is, clicking on one button actually resulted in another button being pressed. Don't use full screen and everything is fine.To achieve maximum screen size simply choose the largest size in settings to get maximum height, then drag the sides to each edge. Don't use the maximize button as this initiates full screen.
Lack of cloud sync means you will have to port your saves over manually. Doable but a pain in the ass to find. For me I finally found it at ~/.steam/root/steamapps/compatdata/335300/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Application Data/DarkSoulsII/random string/
Occasional stutter, nothing that makes the game unplayable but still noticeable at times.
Works perfectly out of the box! Beautiful and 100% playable!
Slight frame drop noted once in combat but nothing game-breaking that I could observe.
Ran quite well out of the box.
Minor framerate stutters but nothing that renders the game unplayable.
I am pleased to say this ran on Linux almost flawlessly where it has persistently failed to run on Windows at all and I'm very happy to be able to play my old save again that I haven't had access to since Windows 7 bygone days!
Works great out of the box!
I experienced a CTD the first time launching it for some reason. This did not occur a second time and subsequent launches worked fine.
Works great out of the box! Updated report to include MP experience.
Works perfectly out of the box for me!
Cloud saves do not appear to work. If you wish to port an old save from Windows copy this entire folder from here C:/Users/[username]/AppData/Local/deathsgambit397 to here ~/.steam/root/steamapps/compatdata/356650/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Local Settings/Application Data/deathsgambit397
I had no issues but if you are experiencing the game minimizing try adding the launch option xrand -r 60. This apparently forces a 60Hz refresh rate. Since my monitor is already 60Hz I do not have this issue and can't report whether it works or not but other uses indicate success!
DW launcher opens but clicking play does nothing that I can see.
It just works!
Great game! It's designed for couch play but have not tried that yet. There are bots to play against as well if you wish to play alone. Best with a controller but keyboard is well supported as well.
Crash to desktop after initial logos
This is likely hardware related, and the game generally runs great on a gaming PC or the Steamdeck, but on integrated graphics this game appears non-functional, which is a bummer, since it doesn't really strike me as a graphically demanding game.
Just works
While I'm unsure if this is considered a bug, it should be, and that is, at every launch the game tries to open an Epic Games tab, which minimizes the game and brings up your browser. Doesn't cause issues, just an annoyance.
Ownership by Tencent is the reason I will not be buying or recommending this game. If you aren't concerned with privacy, then by all means give it a try though - it's not nearly as bad as people say.
As with all games on my Deck, game is locked to 40/60 FPS by default in handheld and docked mode respectively by default. This might be irrelevant since it rarely exceeds 40-50 FPS anyways, but the framerate is mostly stable nonetheless.
- The game will very rarely crash for no apparent reason. Not enough to be annoying but still happens.
- In handheld mode (possibly related to running on battery), there are infrequent frame spikes where the game completely freezes for about one second. Does not occur while docked with AC power.
Crashes on splash screen
Tried various Proton versions
The game crashes immediately on the splash screen. I also tried various Proton versions including Experimental, current stable, and a few older versions to no avail.
Works perfect natively
Speeds above 4 show me frame drops as low as 20 FPS and some jitter as a result. Also the game seems to become slower gradually as time progresses and there is more action on the map (as noted below).
Mid to late game I tend to experience fatal crashes that prevent proceeding past a certain date. It seems to get slower the more action there is on the map until it reaches a certain date and just persistently crashes, with or without an error.
PLEASE NOTE: I run overhaul mods such as Elder Scrolls Universalis that may be affecting this, so take this with a huge grain of salt.
Paradox is known for their high quality Linux releases. Of all their games I've played, I've never had any notable issues compared to some other native releases of games that were straight up borked or just looked off compared to the Windows counterpart.
Launcher updated itself and I lost the mouse pointer after. Manually restarting the game fixed it.
Initial impressions were that it works great! Even comes with what appears to be a community configuration by default. Even though I recommend a mouse, if available, the controller configuration works fantastically. Be aware that the frames will drop depending on what is going on in the game world, adjust the speed accordingly. This is not Deck specific, as it happens on PC as well. I run it at 40Hz with frames limited to 20 for added stability.
For some reason Valve tested this against Proton instead of Native so this is why it says it is unsupported. You can safely ignore that rating - I would rate it, at a minimum, Deck Playable.
Works perfectly out of the box. Did not initially start in 1080p widescreen but was easily fixed with a settings toggle in game. Unsure if this is normal behaviour on Windows but in any case was not an issue.
Will CTD if using the latest Proton as of this report. Reverting to 5.0-10 fixed this and it ran perfectly.
This game plays great on the Deck! However, the default controller layout leaves a bit to be desired and will require some tweaking to gain access to all controls. Additionally, there are no controller glyphs, so whatever layout you set, will need to be memorized. It is best enjoyed with a keyboard and mouse.
Also, if you want more than a 30 FPS average, you may want to lower some graphics settings such as shadows or clouds. I was able to get 50-60 FPS after some very minor tweaks. It is entirely playable without such tweaks though.
Perfect native experience
Runs perfectly natively and multiplayer is flawless!
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="RichTapWinSDKDLL.dll=d" %command%
For some reason the game crashes on launch without the above launch options. I also forced Experimental, though unclear whether this matters.
Game did not launch at all. Tried various Proton versions including 8, 9, Experimental and Hotfix. It's worth noting that this is the demo and I didn't buy the full game but there's no chance I will be if the demo doesn't even launch.
You must use Proton 5 or older. Newer versions (tested both 6 and 7) will result in an invisible window over your Steam library. It will look like nothing happened but if you Alt-Tab, you can see a window opened for the game but it is invisible and borked in this state.
It only happens when you first launch the game but when the message that first pops up and says Press A (for a controller) or Press Space (keyboard), pressing A does nothing. You must press Space if a keyboard is available or wait the 15 seconds for it to continue on its own. This is a bizarre, but isolated issue, as a controller works perfectly from this point forward.

Text is quite small and hard to read when docked to a TV.
Overall playable but text elements can be hard to read. Especially if you're docked to a TV, I found myself straining to read it at a distance. It might not be as bad if you're playing with it in your hand.
Music doesn't appear to play, everything else works fine.
I ran this on Epic Games via the Lutris launcher.
Minor frame drops and stuttering but still quite playable.
Installed via Lutris via Epic Games and it ran great with no tweaking. Sync works perfectly. Only issue is minor frame rate stutter but still very playable imo.
Works if you're ok with minimal graphics settings
Setting any graphics settings above their minimum, barring the below settings which seemed to be fine as is, would result in either a hard or a soft crash. Hard crash - Loading screen hangs, forced to used Ctrl Alt Del to reboot entire system, Soft crash - End game via Steam launcher and restart game. These settings are fine as is, set everything else to minimum (or off): Resolution: 1920x1080 / Anti-aliasing: FXAA2 / Vsync: On / Windowed mode: Checked (unchecking actually enables windowed mode) / Max frame rate: 60
Taskbar is visible at the bottom in fullscreen using the latest Proton (7 as of this report). A downgrade to Proton 5 fixes this.
The game runs great, same as my previous report indicated. Just don't use the latest Proton version (7) if you don't want to see your PC's taskbar at all times. I feel that while newer games are greatly improved by each Proton release, some older games like this one are best run with older versions, and in the case of Morrowind, there really isn't anything to fix with a Proton version change or upgrade. Any bugs or annoyances also exist on Windows, being an older title.
Added WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" %command% to the launch options within Steam. This fixed the lack of character voiced audio perfectly.
Game crashed with a strange error when I went into the Creation Club the first time, however this did not happen again and I was able to add my content with no problems.
Stuck on opening credits - Lutris/Epic Games install
Will say compiling shaders, then go to the opening credits screen and freeze. Full logout required to regain control of the system. Epic Games is inoperable after this without a reboot.
