Launcher opens but hitting play doesn't do anything.
The launcher opens, but cannot start the game
I tried using both the instructions in Maz's report, and the ones in this reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/wine_gaming/comments/eggnql/distant_worlds_universe_in_wine/fcj4jow/
However, neither way worked.

Game will install fine but will not run with Proton
Tried on latest Proton 7 and Proton 7.2-GE-2
Nothing happens when you press Play in the launcher

Refuses to do anything upon clicking play in the launcher
This issue also occurs on Windows 10. The fix on windows is to start Steam as administrator, then the game will play. Probably a permissions problem in Linux.

Follow Maz's report here or https://www.reddit.com/r/wine_gaming/comments/eggnql/distant_worlds_universe_in_wine/fcj4jow/ on reddit. It works now, though I do not recall doing anything differently from before. Using wine-staging 6.3 32bit. Tested saving/loading, tutorials, playing normally for a while. All works. The only issue I've faced so far is with the Galactopedia, which doesn't seem to switch pages very well.

Attempted running in 32 bit wine prefix, still broken
Followed instructions in this reddit comment https://www.reddit.com/r/wine_gaming/comments/eggnql/distant_worlds_universe_in_wine/fcj4jow/ but no dice. Using wine 5.16 (staging).
DW launcher opens but clicking play does nothing that I can see.

Once you've done the steps, the last line runs the game. So turn that into an executable txt file. You'll have no issues once installed.
Follow steps Open a terminal wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Winetricks/winetricks/master/src/winetricks
chmod +x winetricks
WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=$HOME/Path to Game/DistantWorlds wine winecfg
ignore the errors and close Wine Configuration
WINEPREFIX=$HOME/Path to game/DistantWorlds ./winetricks ie6 dotnet35sp1 dotnet40 steam gdiplus wmp9
Agree licenses
MAKE SURE YOU UNCHECK run steam now
cd drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam
WINEPREFIX=$HOME/Path to game/DistantWorlds wine Steam.exe +open steam://open/minigameslist
download Distant Worlds Universe
cd $HOME/Path to game/DistantWorlds/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steam
that should work (if done right)
sudo chmod -x steamapps/common/Steamworks\ Shared/_CommonRedist/DotNet -R
You then launch the game, but close after
WINEPREFIX=$HOME/Path to game/DistantWorlds wine winecfg
Check run virtual desktop Set fullscreen i.e. 1920x1080
WINEPREFIX=$HOME/Path to game/DistantWorlds wine Steam.exe +open steam://open/minigameslist

The game installs just fine, the launcher pops up. But nothing happens.
I played this game a lot under windows. I've generally loved my switch to Linux. But this game I cannot get to work. I've tried other sources too (lutris, gaming on linux etc)
Personally I am not all too well versed in this OS. So I would be very grateful if someone can figure out how to make it work.

32bit Proton prefix needed
The game won't work until either Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player work on 64bit prefixes or Proton supports 32bit prefixes. It's still gonna be a pain to get the game to run properly from that point on due to additional dependencies.
Current state for all Proton versions (official ones as well as up to Proton-4.21-GE-1 by GloriousEgroll):
Opens the launcher, you click on play, launcher freezes and nothing happens. Swapping the autorun.exe and DistantWorlds.exe won't help.
Game does not start at all, pregame menu starts but no buttons function, no error messages.

No change with 4.11. Still the same error: Unhandled Exception: System.Runtime.InteropServices.MarshalDirectiveException: [MarshalAs] attribute required to marshal arrays to managed code. at (wrapper native-to-managed) System._AppDomain.Load(intptr,intptr,intptr) [ERROR] FATAL UNHANDLED EXCEPTION: System.Runtime.InteropServices.MarshalDirectiveException: [MarshalAs] attribute required to marshal arrays to managed code. at (wrapper native-to-managed) System._AppDomain.Load(intptr,intptr,intptr)

Launcher ok, main game doesn't launch even when bypasssing the launcher. With proton debug on, follow logs are displayed: Unhandled Exception: System.Runtime.InteropServices.MarshalDirectiveException: [MarshalAs] attribute required to marshal arrays to managed code. at (wrapper native-to-managed) System._AppDomain.Load(intptr,intptr,intptr)

Still broke in 4.2-1

launcher shows but game does not start

Launcher runs, but play button won't work (same as other reports here)

Tried protontricks dotnet35, but it does not work in 64-bit environment

No change to previous issue: Launcher does nothing at the moment :(

Unable to get past launcher. The "Play Distant Worlds" button does nothing. Installs Microsoft .NET every time it launches.

Launcher runs but the game does not start

Can't get past launcher ;___;

The launcher shows up but pressing the "Play Distant Wold" button doesn't do anything. When moving the launcher window around it starts to spaz out. All other buttons are working fine (they open PDFs or web links) On each start "Microsoft NET. Framekwork" gets installed.

The launcher loads, but none of the buttons respond so you can't play the game.

Launcher runs, but game doesn't start

Launcher starts, but pressing Start Game doesn't actually do anything, and the launcher itself behaves strangely
