Yes it works out of the box but be aware that there are occasional stuttering issues if you try to be competitive
The game runs 95% of the time super smooth at 240fps but 5% of the time there are heavy framedrops that ruin the gameplay for some seconds because of image stuttering
It runs fine with nearly always 230fps+ but because mangohud did not work I have no information about the frametimes
Works out of the box - no meaningful problems for nearly 100 hours
It happens very often that when I start Among Us and play the first round I get kicked some seconds after the start. A complete restart of the game fixes this problem which is why I always join the lobby then restart the game and join again which seems to prevent the crash from happening.
You cannot even play the training since after like 2 minutes at the training you get kicked back to the menu because of an anti cheat error
After tinkering with GE-Proton7-10 and adding a community compiled dxvk cache file this game runs exactly as good as on my Windows partition
gamemoderun %command% -dev -novid -forcenovsync +fps_max 150 -freq 144 -preload
I had at the beginning problems with fullscreen (alt+tab and going back in made everything get 1fps) and just switched to borderless which works pretty fine but this could have also been resolved when switching to GE-Proton7-10
It is exactly as on Windows
There is out of the box a massive performance problem. A custom Proton (GE-Proton7-10) resolved some of the issues but most of the really bad lag can be resolved by replacing the dxvk shader cache file with a community compiled cache file as is explained here: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/t5xrho/dxvk_state_cache_for_fixing_stutter_in_apex/. Adding that community shader cache file made the game as smooth as on Windows.
Works out of the box, played the whole main story (I had max settings and between 30-60fps with an average at 55fps at 1080p)
Crashes every 2 or more hours but this seems to happen on Windows too? (Autosaves keep your progress so no worries)
Some [clothing] physics sometimes look odd - not sure if this is the same on Windows
The performance is abysmal out of the box even on the lowest possible settings
Even on the lowest possible graphical settings I get between 3 and 60fps (which means it is super laggy and generally unplayable) in every 3D scene (the 2D scenes and the menu are fine)
Cannot recommend if you have tearing like me but on an adaptive sync monitor it is probably fine
VSync did not work which is why I have heavy tearing every time I move which makes it unplayable for me (I played it before 7h on Windows where this was not a problem)
On Windows it crashed after 7h so hard that my whole progress was deleted - I would recommend backing up your save games from time to time to not loose your progress
Works fine out of the box but needs strong hardware (I had no anti-aliasing and medium reflections for 50-60fps@1080p)
If you are offline the game is not starting and is stuck after the initial logos
It actually works out of the box (even without installing gamespy/...) [at least the first mission]
Crackling during the prerendered video sequences
Heavy artifacts during the prerendered video sequences (the logos in the begin and the explanation of the suit abilities)
I played this game years ago on Windows and it feels exactly the same (even better because smooth very high 1080p@60fps)
The intro video and logo videos at the start have big artifacts and crackling audio (press space bar to skip) but nothing else makes problems.
I have not played it completely through - I am only at probably 45% (at the tanks in the tunnel) but thought I should update the review because it is really stable.
I runs like I remember it on Windows at 1080p@60fps
Sometimes (I noticed it like 3 times) the framerate goes down to 20 fps or so but otherwise no problems
The option to use High-Res-Textures is disabled which especially at this game would be very nice to have but it looks OK even as is.
Worked out of the box with local Co-op using two Xbox (360/One) controllers
The native performance is more than two times better compared to proton although there were otherwise no problems
I played the first episode on Linux and on Windows. While the average fps on Linux was around 45fps it quite often lags and goes to 25fps or lower at lower than default settings (medium) with no aliasing, motion blur and depth of field. On Windows with the same hardware the average fps were at around 90 fps and when there were some loading times or other issues (heavy utilization because of a 'fight') the fps still wouldn't drop below 50-60fps. But on Windows I used the highest possible settings with only motion blur and field of depth turned off.
If you have better hardware than me you can probably enjoy the game via proton (45fps on average on medium settings) but on my hardware compared to the native Windows performance (90fps on average with highest settings) I just can't recommend it since the frequent fps drops down to 20-30fps are quite noticeable while on Windows these drops are less frequent and almost always never reach below 60-50fps.
I switched to the Vulkan launcher because people said its better than the default one. Had no issues with the Vulkan launcher.
Works perfectly fine out of the box (but you need a Bethesda account to play the game!)
Alt+Tab or making the game a window crashed the game instantly
For me it runs with no VSync at 60fps+ (most often between 90-130fps) with 8-13ms frametimes (GPU is the limiting factor). All the graphics are set to maximum besides texture (one down because it needs more than 6GB of VRAM), motion blur and depth are off and no dynamic/static resolutions.
You can enjoy the game if you get a high enough framerate without VSync and use the already described mouse input fix
Heavy tearing out of the box because VSync (I have no adaptive sync monitor) did not work at all - I disabled it because at like 200fps at 1080p there is even without it nearly no noticeable tearing
As said the input is lagging behind which can be overcome by disabling VSync and adding a DLL file known as Dead Space Mouse Fix
Besides the VSync needs to be off issue (easily possible - gtx980ti has 200-300fps) it was as much fun as it was on Windows
Heavy tearing out of the box when VSync is on - you should be able to disabled it because the game runs at like 150-350fps when playing at 1080p so even without it at these fps there is nearly no noticeable tearing
The mouse input is lagging noticeable behind which can be overcome by disabling VSync and adding a DLL file known as Dead Space Mouse Fix (I later played on controller because it just feels more natural in this game so I don't really know if the mouse fix is even necessary in this case)
The experienced crashes were as far as I can remember also happening when I played on Windows:
- Sometimes you jump in zero gravity and just die instead of landing (happened 5 times): Try to jump somewhere else and it should just work again.
- In the last chapter (12) when you put the thing from your ship into a big hall it crashes when opening the big doors to the next hall: I read that enabling VSync, putting the resolution at 720p and setting quality to low during opening the door should prevent the crash which worked for me after it crashed once and you can restore all settings after the doors are open.
It has consistent micro stutters which are really noticeable having played the game previously on Windows that happen on all graphic qualities
The micro stutters made skill checks and other quicktime actions less reaction based and more prediction based which is not what should be the case
Since some versions of either the NVIDIA driver or the Kernel the game starts but renders only a black screen (audio works)
Half a year ago it worked great but on X11/Wayland it now has the same issue for me on all proton versions and with all kinds of command arguments (I think my previous arguments were '-DX12 -USEALLAVAILABLECORES -DXVK_ASYNC=1')
VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/nvidia_icd.json %command%
I needed to add that one command line option because I only get a black screen per default
VKD3D_CONFIG=nodxr %command%
Running this game without any commands resulted in a hard crash of my system on the intro video where the logs list hundreds of times 54.257:0128:0290:warn:vkd3d-proton:d3d12_resource_QueryInterface: {6b3b2502-6e51-45b3-90ee-9884265e8df3} not implemented, returning E_NOINTERFACE
. Searching this on the internet brought me to https://github.com/HansKristian-Work/vkd3d-proton/issues/1794 where @shelterx suggested adding VKD3D_CONFIG=nodxr
since which no crash or other problems appeared for me.
Works great on my machine at high settings on 1080p with >60fps when switching the in-game Graphics API from DX12 to DX11

On my third session the game suddenly started to randomly freeze the video a lot (saving still possible) so I switched the Graphics API in the in-game settings from DX12 to DX11 and there were no crashes or problems since.

With medium Anti Aliasing and High Post Processing Quality (Epic everything else) I get 90fps+ out of the box with no lags or crashes
The intro video audio is totally borked and kills my ears every time - but you can skip it by pressing any key and there was no other audio bug after this
The intro video is bugged but it can be skipped by pressing any key
There is no sound while the actual game seems to work fine and load fast.
I started playing the first installment "Halo Reach" and there was no sound during cut scenes or in game but the menu (even in game) makes sounds.
It runs very smooth out of the box (99% of the time above 120fps) and lags only sometimes in the first seconds of loading a level
The initial title screen video is not playing out of the box (it can still be skipped) but that is the only bug i have encountered
It runs very smooth (120fps+) and without any bugs/crashes out of the box with only minor lags and some missing videos
I played this game with a Xbox One wired controller without problems but when I tried playing it for this review with mouse and keyboard I noticed that when you are moving the mouse even just a little the framerate dips into oblivion (from 200fps instantly down to 3-30fps) which is why it was unplayable with a mouse on my machine
When entering a world or sometimes when you fly into a wall or against an edge of the world for some seconds the framerate dips which does not happen much or isn't a deal braker
The initial title screen video is not playing out of the box (it can still be skipped) and at the end and near the end there were (probably?) 3 other videos that were just instantly skipped for me which sucks but I don't feel like I actually missed something since everything else was rendered in game
At highest settings it ran at 1080p@60fps without any stutters, online "multiplayer" was also excellent
Very minor and only sometimes but you can notice it
The audio crackling is nearly unnoticeable and is no dealbraker at all when playing the game in my opinion.
To get the intro videos running I installed MF (via mf-install) but as soon as the gameplay starts there is a white screen
On the first start it crashed almost immediately after starting the story video, on the second start it crashed during the video, on the third start I installed MF and had no crash until the intro video was finished but after that the game shows a blank white screen and doesn't react any more.
When running this game without VSync (I have a GSync Compatible monitor) you will see lines every time you move the camera. Activating VSync removes all these effects with the shortcoming of "only" having 60fps.
Twice when I started this game it was just the logo on a black background which was both times fixed by a restart.
To not get a fatal error (probably on every start) on starting the game you need to add the following lines to your /etc/hosts
file:
0.0.0.0 see-siren.os.eidos.com
0.0.0.0 see-siren-prod.os.eidos.com
Like I said in the other comments you need to activate VSync and add DNS block two domains for a smooth and not crashing experience
With NVIDIA PhysX off I could play the training and the first 3 levels at the highest settings (even aliasing maxed) at 1080p@60fps.
If NVIDIA PhysX is turned on in buildings and some other areas the framerate drops to very low numbers (1-5 which means it is nearly unplayable -> turn it off to have fun).
Runs out of the box without any issues (even the multiplayer)
In my case the fullscreen game instantly promotes itself to the top if i tab out so I moved it to the second desktop and switched between desktops to get out of it
It feels really sluggish (but the last time I played on Windows is years ago) and I don't really know if the addition of "-GameTime.MaxSimFps 60 -GameTime.ForceSimRate 60" in Origin actually improved anything
You will have fun because the game is too captivating but you need to endure constant frame drops at seemingly random times.
Many times (randomly) the game demands from CPU or GPU 110% performance and thus sinks to 5-25fps from otherwise 55fps @1080p (even on the lowest possible settings) which can break the game flow because it happens quite often - otherwise the performance is good even if you max them (besides blur and better anti aliasing which I generally have turned off)
Three times (in 40 hours) the game crashed by making the window black/white but still going on in the background which means all the progress from the last save point needs to be repeated (every time around 5-15 minutes) - on the internet i found multiple people that have had the same bug
It stutters way too much for me too enjoy playing it (every 10s there is a big stutter)
But the audio crackling can be fixed by disabling Windows Spacial Audio in the game settings in the section audio
It seems that every time assets are loading in cutscenes or if you move 10m the game stutters really bad for 1-3 seconds which means it stutters all the time.
Enabling VSYNC and disabling dynamic resolution plus enabling exclusive full screen boosts the performance very much but the frequent stutters cannot be completely prevented by these settings. Disabling ESYNC as mentioned in other reviews did not change anything.
Because of the constant stutters you won't have an enjoyable experience running this game on Linux
But the audio crackling can be easily fixed by disabling Windows Spacial Audio in the game settings in the section audio
When playing the game (which can also mean just standing still in the tutorial) the game has very noticeable stutters every like 5 seconds. This effect can be damped by capping the framerate to for example 60fps or by enabling V-SYNC but all in all the game is stuttering all the time for me. Going to low graphics or changing other things did not help.
I tried proton 5.13, 6.3 and the current proton-experimental but all versions have the same constant stutters on my hardware.
Micro stutters
The first time I started it there were horrible micro stutters every few seconds that made it unplayable, when I then restarted it one day later after another shader compilation by steam it was as smooth as on Windows
Controller are correctly recognized but not their input
My XBox One and XBox 360 controller are both recognized by the game but the players never move or do anything. When entering the remapping screen both of them are recognized as XBox 360/One controller but any input for remapping is also not recognized.
If you can get over the crazy slow (hard 1fps drops) plant selection parts you will have fun just like on Windows.
During the selection of the plants the game slows down to like 1fps but during the game the performance is seemingly native.
The single player does work out of the box with zero crashes or other problems
I noticed once audio crackling but after that never again
Sometimes the framerate dips noticeably for a second and generally the performance on higher graphical settings does seem a bit slow but I have not played this game on Windows.
To get a good framerate of around 120fps+@1080p (without vsync) I needed to select the second worst graphical settings everywhere and disable anti-aliasing which seems a bit worse than it probably should be (compared to Doom Eternal which runs on my PC at 90fps+ on highest settings).
Works out of the box with no problems at highest settings with 120fps+@1080p (no vsync)
If you exit a world/save and go to the main menu and load it again (without a game restart) the performance is really bad and audio crackling will also be there - but if you restart the game and then load it there are no problems
It runs perfectly at 1080p@60fps with everything on Ultra but the random crashes suck and could be a dealbreaker
In 2 hours playtime the game crashed 4 times without any reasons (it seems random) - I lost every time like 3-5min progress
The introduction video(?) at the start of the game in the space capsule was plain white - guess normally a video is played
There is an auto save system so you will not loose too much progress but I need to check if I can update it to run more frequently - than it wouldn't be as bad as it is currently
It runs fine even at the highest settings but crashes a lot
The game crashed at least 30 times in 20h of playing
There is an auto save system where you can configure the time frequency it saves - set this time to (every) 1 min - if you do you will not loose too much progress even if a crash happens.
Also the introduction video(?) at the start of the game in the space capsule was plain white - guess normally a video is played.
Works out of the box
As in many other origin games the origin achievement notifications minimize the game but you can just tab into it and continue or turn them off via the origin client. I had some frame stutters to low fps for very short amounts of time (while playing at 1080p@240fps) but nothing wild that would make it unplayable.
It just worked out of the box with very good performance
But I am not even sure if controllers are a supported input - in the menu at least nothing moved after connecting my controller
I have all graphical options on Max, only the background quality is on low and VSync is off which results in easily +150fps during the levels. My CPU and GPU both reach at max 75% usage when I checked it during playing the game.
Works great on X11
On Wayland (with NVIDIA) it's impossible to play, constant flickering that never stops
Runs out of the box just like on Windows
Very consistent frame times (basically a line via mangohud) of 2-2.5ms at around 600fps at 1080p with maximum graphics options (with unlimited frame rate) and around 1GB of VRAM usage
(I did not yet try out the multiplayer) No problems during the first 2 chapters of the campaign after I disabled the Origin overlay
Game crashes nearly any time when I leave fullscreen (alt+tab or when the origin overlay makes notification for achievments)
The 5h campaign is really good but the multiplayer has long matchmaking and crashes 50% of the time
The game crashes when you tab out and windowing did not work - it even crashed when achieving something because of the origin overlay (I disabled it after the fourth crash so that only the steam overlay is being triggered)
During the single player campaign there were no crashes but during my 6 online games 3 of them crashed in the middle of the game without specific reasons
Also disable origin overlays for no crashes during achievements and never use alt+tab or window the game. Game runs at 120fps+ all the time with really low frame times (checked via mangohud overlay).
The 5h campaign is really good and the multiplayer is fun too (played around 4h without crashes or problems)
With the current proton experimental the window switching was not a problem any more (It suddenly worked but I only tested this version for 10 min), before with 5.13-5 and previous the game crashes instantly if you tab out, window it, switch workspaces or an origin achievement comes up.
During the multiplayer the game crashed like 4 times out of the blue (I played the campaign more than once).
Also during the multiplayer with Proton 5.13-5 and experimental there are random crashes all the time, so be sure to manually select 5.0-10 if you want to play it (not necessary for campaign).
!!! To play the multiplayer you need to manually select Proton 5.0-10 otherwise it will crash randomly during the matches !!!
I disabled origin overlays for no crashes during achievements and never use alt+tab or window the game. It runs quite stable at 120fps+ all the time with really low frame times and high visual settings (checked via mangohud overlay).
Probably yes - there are still enough people for a lobby but I did not play long enough to know - just checked if it worked
Somehow I needed to modify the configuration file at My Documents/Respawn
to change the resolution to 1080p and other graphical settings that were disabled per default and after a restart the the lock was disabled and I could configure the texture settings and co too
I just played the training and one multiplayer game(!) but I had no problems during all of this - my old Origin stats were even loaded without problems
Played for 2 hours without problems - runs perfectly out of the box at the highest possible settings smooth at 1080p
Somehow I needed to modify the configuration file at My Documents/Respawn
to change the resolution to 1080p and other graphical settings that were disabled per default (after a restart the the lock was disabled and I could configure everything)
Used the experimental branch because otherwise it would install an empty game (code="F9LLREbgTxg635NC")
But my PC currently has problems with Audio so take with a grain of salt.
Controller need to be plugged in before starting the game - no hot swap in any way is supported.
