Works great out of the box. Just make sure to fix the windowing problem that happens sometimes by configuring the game's proton prefix.
Some audio is out of sync in some in-game dialogs, but it happens very rarely and apparently it's an issue on windows too.
Game starts minimized for some reason (?) Go to the game's proton prefix (/your/steam/path/compatdata/33230/pfx), open a terminal in that folder and run export WINEPREFIX=$(pwd); winecfg
Now head over to the graphics tab and check the "emulate a virtual desktop" box. Then put in your monitor's resolution. This should fix the minimizing problem.
Works flawlessly after the fixes listed below. Keep in mind you might need to try different proton versions
PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 PROTON_USE_D9VK=1 PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%
protontricks 35140 mdx d3dx9 d3dcompiler_43 win10
Use proton 4.11 to run the game. Doesn't work with proton 5.0.9
Some minor stuttering when accessing the in-game menu (upgrades tab, arkham city stories tab, etc)
Does NOT start with proton 5.0.9
To run it, use proton 4.11
The game doesn't let me turn off V-sync. Doesn't matter what proton version or settings I use, the FPS is capped at 60
The game has stutters because of UE3's low-quality texture streaming algorithm. To fix, follow the steps below.
Texture Streaming is bugged on GPUs with more than 8GBs of VRAM and may cause stutters.
To fix, right-click the game -> Manage -> "Browse local files".
Now go to SinglePlayer/BMGame/Config/BmEngine.ini
Ctrl + F and search for "PoolSize". The default value is 1024 (1GB), but I bumped mine up to 1536 (1.5GB) and it fixed all of the stuttering. Setting it too high causes the game to load up in memory objects that are too far away and this actually increases the stutters. Setting to 1.5 - 2GB seems to be more than enough for this game.
Low-quality texture streaming causes stutters on a 4070 left untouched.
5.9-GE-3-ST GloriousEggroll
Proton GE found in https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases
Performance is below what should be expected by a RX 580.
To improve performance, use RADV_PERFTEST=aco %command% in the launch options
6.13-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Install Proton 6.13-GE-1 from https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases/tag/6.13-GE-1
Very few servers kick me because of missing ping, but just running the following fixed it for me. I haven't been kicked out of a server for weeks now.
sudo setcap cap_net_raw+epi ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Proton-6.13-GE-1/files/bin/wineserver
sudo setcap cap_net_raw+epi ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Proton-6.13-GE-1/files/bin/wine-preloader
sudo setcap cap_net_raw+epi ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Proton-6.13-GE-1/files/bin/wine64-preloader
Straight-forward to run, but stutters may ruin the experience a bit. Use DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command% to fix the most aggressive stutters.
DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command%
Stutters due to shader compilations. Use DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command% to fix it.
Runs perfectly out of the box using Proton 4.11-12 Didn't notice any bugs at all on both Fedora 31 desktop and on my Arch Linux notebook
Runs perfectly with the RADV_PERFTEST=aco launch flag on my AMD RX 580. I used GE's fork of Proton
5.9-GE-5-ST GloriousEggroll
Used GE's proton fork
Works like magic! It requires you to have mesa-git (version 21.0) and proton 5.13-4
Lyp-sync is delayed sometimes
Lip-sync doesn't match the voice sometimes. I'm not sure if this is because I'm playing the game on my native language (Brazilian Portuguese), or because of some issue with wine
If you encounter any bugs, take a look in this thread. A lot of the bugs being reported have their respective solutions listed there
Works perfectly out of the box. No tinkering needed
Make sure to change the graphics API to Vulkan in the in-game settings as it defaults to OpenGL
Sometimes when changing virtual windows (I'm on i3 gaps) the game captures my mouse cursor. I'm not sure why this happens, but switching back to the game window and then switching out usually fixes it.
Do it enough times and eventually the game will free your mouse cursor
Performs just like Windows after adding the launch flags. About 95% of the stuttering is gone, and the game doesn't crash anymore
Using the flags PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 RADV_PERFTEST=aco PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 %command% gave a huge perfomance improvement. Without these, the game crashes and stutters a lot. These made the stuttering almost non-existent and stopped the game from crashing. The performance is very much like in Windows after adding the flags
Minor stuttering. Can be solved with the flags mentioned in the report
Fixed with PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1
No issues using Proton 5 and 4.11-12 on Fedora 31. This should totally get a platinum rating
To fix the trees with untreated geometry, disable anti aliasing in the game options
To fix the constant crashes, use PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 %command%
Game completely freezes after the first hotel fight. You cannot move or do anything, and the only thing that works is the esc key. You also can't save, so you're stuck. To fix this, I installed windows and managed to get a 0% save game and upload it to my google drive, so everybody can use. Link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1QKS4WBQvVnPyapjWjVp-hP0uGQH_9rJu?usp=sharing
Just paste the file on .steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/19900/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My\ Documents/My\ Games/Far\ Cry\ 2/Saved\ Games
There are 2 save games: One on normal difficulty, and one on hardcore. I personally think the game on normal is too boring and easy, but I uploaded one on normal anyway because I know most people don't want to play on hardcore
Crashes constantly. To fix, use PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=1 %command%

Simply download this modpack here: https://www.definitive-edition-project.com/vc-de
This is a bundle with tons of fixes (including crashes, FPS, widescreen and many more) and quality of life improvements. The instructions to install it are on the website
Use WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8.dll=n,b d3d8.dll=n,b ddraw.dll=n,b" %command% as your launch options after installing the modpack!
Works well with mouse and PS4 controller. There is stuttering, likely due to not having pre-compiled shaders
Experienced stuttering and slowness on my RX580. Facial animations are messed up too, but these issues are not game-breaking. If you ignore occasional slow-downs and weird facial animations, the game is fine for you.
Works great after fixing it. Here are my launch options: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command%
Audio is out of sync. To fix it, add WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" to the launch options
The shader processing in this game is INSANE. At every camera movement or anything the game chugs and starts stuttering like crazy. To fix it, just add DXVK_ASYNC=1 to the launch options.
It'll add some slight artifacting to the screen, but nothing you'd be able to notice without actively looking for it.
Works great with my generic offbrand chinese gamepad too
Runs fine,. but left and right click are not detected. Happens on Proton 5.0-3 and 4.11-12. Running game using Proton 4.2-9 fixed it for me
Game is able to detect mouse movement, but left-click, right-click and mouse wheel are not detected AT ALL. Keyboard works 100% fine. Curious, this seems to change a lot from system to system, because I didn't have this problem when using an Arch Linux install. On Fedora 31, however, I had this issue.
Works flawlessly on Proton 5.0-10.
Also plays great with a gamepad. I was able to use my PS4 controller without problems.
Works perfectly natively and with Proton
Cannot change the audio output to my monitor, but may just be with me. Tried with pavucontrol and alsa directly
Works perfectly right out of the box. No tinkering is needed
I tested it with the widescreen patch and the mod worked too.
Works great with RADV. If you're on an AMD GPU, please DON'T use the AMDVLK driver.
Used the AMDVLK driver by mistake and even at 720p on low I had stutters and framerate dips. Then I deleted AMDVLK from my system and installed RADV and now I'm playing with a constant 60 fps at 1440p.
Game runs fine after installing https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-installcab. There is a performance impact, but that's expected.
Had to install https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-installcab to get past the gas station cutscene. Otherwise, the game will get stuck on an infinite loading screen.
Audio is slightly out of sync, but not much. Its not an issue at all, unless you're the kind of person that absolutely needs lip-syncing to be spot-on. It gets off by like 0.5 - 1 second.
Game definitely runs slower. When I had windows, it'd get 100-150 fps @ 1920x1080. With the same hardware and settings, I'm getting 60 fps for most of the time, but still drops to 40-50 when game has to load a new room. Using an RX 580 8GB
Works great pretty much out of the box. Just make sure to disable Resizeable Bar if you're on Nvidia or Smart Acess Memory if you're on AMD
Sometimes I feel like the game, the devs or someone at Rockstar personally hates fullscreen. Every time I launch it, it launches in windowed mode, but fixing it is as simple as going in the settings menu and changing to fullscreen.
MAKE SURE TO DISABLE AMD SMART ACCESS MEMORY!!!
I don't know whether it's my hardware, the drivers or what, but having AMD Smart Access Memory enabled in the BIOS actually hurt my performance for 20-30 fps. I was able to replicate this on windows too. Disabling S.A.M. on my BIOS settings made my performance jump from 40-43 to 65-75 fps. I blame the ridiculously narrow bus transfer on the RX 6600, but how accurate that is is beyond me. If you're having performance problems or if you'd like to get more frames, disabling SAM (or resizeable bar if you're on Nvidia) might be worth a shot.
My launch options: WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR=1 WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR_STRENGTH=5 gamemoderun %command% -USEALLAVAILABLECORES. Playing at 2304x1296 with FSR upscaling to 1440p with an RX 6600 and I'm getting 60-78 fps.
I tested the game thoroughly with -ignorepipelinecache and -cpuloadrebalancing, and both didn't do anything. They actually hurt my performance for 3-4 fps with seemingly no benefits. Game didn't crash at all on me and I've played for 5 hours straight. Which is weird, because even though my hardware isn't too bad, it's not top of the line either and people with much better specs got crashes.
Works great after installing WMP11. Didn't work for me on proton 5.13 or 5.0, so I had to stick with 4.11
Disabling ESync gave the game a push perfomance-wise. It feels much more fluid. Add
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command%
to the game's launch options.
The game requires windows media player 11 to play cutscenes, so you have to install wmp11 by running
protontricks 304240 wmp11
With Proton 5.X there were quite a lot of glitching artifacts. Changing to proton 4.11 fixed it and now they're gone
When running the game with high textures and shadows the game crashes and gives me an "Err08". After looking up WTF is an Err08, I found out it means the game ran out of VRAM.... on my RX580 that has 8GB of VRAM -_-
Changing shadows and textures to low fixed it for me
If you get "Permission denied" when trying to install WMP11, run
sudo chmod 777 -R /steam/folder/here/compatdata/304240/pfx/

In my previous report I forgot to mention Jill and all other NPCs (including zombies) turn invisible if you don't set anti-aliasing to OFF in the game settings. Not a lot of people get this bug, but I was one of the fortunate ones that had to deal with it. After turning off anti-aliasing I was able to play for over an hour without any issues
If you get "Permission denied" when trying to install WMP11, run
sudo chmod 777 -R /steam/folder/here/compatdata/304240/pfx/
Happy zombie hunting!
Works for me after tinkering for days, but unfortunately I can't recommend it for a typical gamer.
Had to use protontricks to install wmp11 like others have described
I had a part of my screen flickering like crazy like described in my other reports, and only switching to Proton 4.11 seemed to fix it, but the game ran like dogcrap and would force me to set it to low textures / no AA.
To fix this, I experimented a bit and found out that DXVK was the problem. Running the game using OpenGL instead of Vulkan fixed it on Proton 5.0-10 and now I don't get that neither the Err08 or flickering textures anymore. Add this to your the game launch options if you're also having this issue
PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command%
Keep in mind that you must have shadows on low, otherwise the game will hang for 2 seconds every time you open a door or your inventory. You can still set textures and AA to high, but shadows must be on low
Works flawlessly under Proton 5.0-10. Works great with my PS4 controller too
Just make sure to install wmp11 to play the cutscenes
protontricks 339340 wmp11
Works great on my RX580 after installing media foundation. Guide here: https://github.com/z0z0z/mf-install
Works perfectly after following this guide: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1760498189
Use protontricks 21690 wmp11
to install Windows Media Player 11
Some very specific 3D artifacts have missing textures, but this not really a problem. This only happens with picked-up items that spawn a rotating 3D model. It's so rare that doesn't bother at all
protontricks 221040 wmp11
Artifacts were glitching until I switched to Proton 4.11. I bet the problem is with the resident evil engine, because this same artifacts bug happens with Resident Evil 1 Remake and switching to Proton 4.11 fixes it
Cutscenes lagging very bad until I switched to Proton 4.11. Some users say editing steam/steamapps/compatdata/221040/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My\ Documents/CAPCOM/RESIDENT\ EVIL\ 6/config.ini
and changing RenderingThread to "OFF" also helps, but just switching to Proton 4.11 fixed it for me.
Runs great. Just make sure to download a shaders mod, because it looks very dated. https://www.moddb.com/downloads/stalker-shaders-max-105
%command% -noprefetch -nointro
Shadows glitch sometimes, but nothing game breaking. Lighting in storms was also very glitchy, but installing a shaders pack with more advanced post-processing effects fixed it for me.
Slight stutters. These are unexpected since my CPU is pretty good, but I suspect this is related to the single-threaded nature of the game engine. Many games from the late 2000s also suffer from this.
"We've noticed your computer is currently offline" whenever Origin tried to log in over wifi. Using a wired connection for login fixed it
PS4 controller didn't work
Had problems with Origin not connecting to the internet unless I used a wired connection.
Everytime I tried to use wi-fi, I was stuck at this error message: "We've noticed your computer is currently offline". The only fix I found was to use a wired connection using USB Tethering from my phone and then switch over to wi-fi after Origin logged in.
Tested with several Proton and Lutris versions
Proton-6.13-GE-1 GloriousEggroll
Used the latest Proton GE with the FSR upscale patch to squeeze out as much performance as I can.
I'm playing it at 720p upscaled to 1440p and it runs really well, the game only crashed once in my 4 hours of gameplay.
To enable FSR, download the latest version of Proton GE from github and add
WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR=1 WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR_STRENGTH=5 %command%
to the game's launch options. I highly recommend playing with FSR and not at your native resolution, because this game WILL put your PC under a lot of stress, especially with mods
The game only crashed once in 4 hours of gameplay. Sometimes it freezes my whole PC for 10 seconds but then it returns to normal. During these freezes I can't alt-tab out of it or do anything (the PC as a whole freezes), but after some 10 seconds everything returns to normal and I can continue playing.
Back when I had an RX 580 8GB the game would run kind of badly. With my new RX 6600 it runs great, but don't expect crazy good performance with anything south of a GTX 1070 or an RX 5600XT.
I also highly recommend using proton GE to upscale the game. The game itself is very blocky, so FSR works well even with lower input resolutions - I'm upscaling from 900p to 1440p and it still looks very good!
Download Proton GE here, add it to steam and add WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR=1 WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR_STRENGTH=5 %command%
to your launch options
An absolute hidden gem that works perfectly after you fix the resolution bug
Volumetric lighting flickers with some light sources. I can confirm this is also a bug on windows
If you have a monitor with a resolution larger than 1920x1200, the game doesn't support it out of the box. To fix this, follow usVandal's guide
Works like a charm
The game doesn't any resolutions above 1920x1200 natively, so if you're on a 1440p or a 4k monitor make sure to install a widescreen mod.
Works perfectly with proton 6.3-7 for me
Uplay will crash the very first time you try to run the game, but just click on the run button again after it crashes and it will run without issues.
