Turn the graphics down and lock your refresh rate to 40 unless you want the deck to become a space heater. The engine doesnt seem to be optimised for lower powered devices. This game tends to eat battery life like its nothing so I'd recommend you play plugged in.
Its a really fun mod and an interesting expanding of the gel usage from the main game. The story and the characters are pretty compelling too! The only thing to note is that if you arent super used to joystick controls (like me when I first got the deck) some of the later levels require you to react quite quickly, so were a little frustrating at first.
The cutscenes would almost always fade to white about halfway though. No clue why or how to fix, it happened when the deck was capped at 30 and 60 so not a framerate thing. Ended up watching them on youtube. The game ran fine otherwise.
Some information text can be a little small, but nothing important.
Pretty good, but unfortunately more combat focussed than the original. It runs well if you turn the settings down a little, the default is too high imo.
Limited to 40fps, turned settings down. Its still a battery eater though.
I fell through a building once, only lost a few mins thanks to an auto save fortunately.
Some minor slow downs in some of the boss fights & when driving fast in the city but I tended to glide everywhere so not a big issue. The game is a battery eater so I'd reccomend playing plugged in. Overall played great though with default settings and no tweaks.
Turn the graphics down to medium, didnt make much difference and saved battery.
Runs great straight out of the box!
Its a fun free short stealth game. It runs purrfectly out of the box at a locked 60fps with no graphics tweaking.
Had to switch to desktop mode
Dropped the power to 10 watts, and the graphics to medium. No effect on performance.
The cutscenes at the beginning and end of missions display a tv test card for a few seconds before skipping to the game.
It has some problems but its overall a fairly fun game. Dont buy it unless its under something like £5 though, its not worth THAT much. Like the others have said, you have to start the game in desktop mode, once you reach the title screen though you can close the game and launch it with no issues in gaming mode.
Some text can be kinda small but its not too bad.
It runs well but I had to turn the grahics down to very low, but to be honest it looks fine on the deck screen. With the graphics on low I was mostly locked to 60, with rare dips into the 40s.
Some text was a little small but nothing major
After I put the graphics to low I got a locked 60 on the deck. The game still looks pretty good too.
When i put the deck to sleep while the game was paused and came back about 30 mins later the audio was pretty crackly. Relaunched the game and it went away.
Game crashes evey now and then for no noticable reason, its happened both in combat and simply walking around. Its not too bad if you save reasonably frequently.
Some text is quite small, mainly in the character upgrade screen.
Runs at a perfect locked 60 at the default recommended settings, good battery life too!
Occasional slow downs, 2 crashes in the 31 hours it took me to beat the game. Didnt lose any progress so not too bad imo
Some item and menu text is a little small, not a big issue for me though.
Fun game, but turn the graphics to low, anthing higher and the game runs really badly. Works great on low though.
Not really "trouble", but the launch window was touch screen only for me fyi.
One crash in the first mission, never happened again.
Custom launch option: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="d3d8=n,b;msvcp71=n;msvcr71=n" gamemoderun %command%
The game runs fine once you set the custom launch option, but no matter if you use the official or community layouts, the controls suck. There are also some problems in cutscenes where the black aspect ratio bars dont cover the whole screen, and you can see the game behind them.
Frequent jarring visual glitching, often occuring when entering vents or throwing things
If you can put up with the visual glitches, the game runs fine. But given that the non-remastered one did not have any of these glitches, I'd reccomend that version instead.
Initially had no audio outside of cutscenes, Installed openAL using protontricks and all audio worked perfectly after.
It runs really well on deck as long as you dont have physx enabled. With physx enabled the game would drop to 4-10 fps whenever the cops started shooting. It ran perfectly once turned off. The default control scheme is a bit weird at first, but is fine once you get used to it - it wasnt weird enough to bother messing with.
Turn down quality settings as the defult was unnecessarily high imo and just drained more battery for little gain.
The game requires you to log into your EA account when first launching, so I had to make one. You need to be online at least for the initial launch of the game.
There can be some surprisingly long load times, this isnt the steam deck's fault it seems to be long no matter the hardware FYI.
Some text is a little small but its not too bad
Plays flawlessly with no changes to default settings. No need to change the controls like others have said, just keep your thumbs on the sticks at all times, its a fast paced game.
Works great with no changes. Controls worked fine too, even the triggers and touchpads.
For movement, joystick works great but the dpad is kinda weird. The game plays great with the joystick so its not a problem.
Occasional crashes, always during the cutscenes. The game ran fine otherwise and no save progress was lost
It's a really fun mod that I think any fan of the main games should try out, the puzzles are fun and interesitng, and the characters are pretty good too. The only thing I would reccomend is to turn the graphics to medium, high was fine for a while, but the framerate took a hit when I reached the outside areas, turning the graphics down to medium got me back to a locked 60.
Some text in the inventory is pretty small
I'd reccomend turning the graphics down for a better framerate & battery. Also at least for me the default control scheme is kinda weird, but it supports the deck controls really well if you want to rebind them.
Was able to launch and start a park, but no matter what I tried I was not able to rotate the camera. I could pan around, zoom in and out, and even build coasters, but I could not find a way to move the camera properly. I guess it works great if you play it in the isometric mode like the first two.
A few freezes right at the beginning of levels sometimes, I think it happened when I entered hacking mode before everything was fully loaded in.
Cute little stealthish game, runs great with no settings tweaks.
I played with most settings on medium or low as with the style of the game I didnt feel like it made a huge difference and it let me exend battery life. It ran at a solid 60fps with no problems or stuttering, and generally ran perfectly.
Very short, only a few levels, but pretty fun. I wish they had made a longer game becuase it shows real promise.
Its not groundbreaking or anything, but its a pretty fun game for what it is, and the controls worked perfectly for me. Its an old game so it runs perfeclty with no tweaks. Some minor problems though, you will have to use the touchscreen for the menus, and I couldnt get online connectivity working (I'd guess the servers closed long ago).
After pausing and putting the deck to sleep, and coming back 15 min later, the game was completely silent. Worked fine again after closing and re-opening the game.
Runs flawlessly, 60fps locked on medium.
Its a fun little game, and a cool peice of gaming history, given that these mechanics would later be incorportated into portal 2. Only possible problem is that the look sensitivity is really high, but its not a big deal.
Turn the graphics down to low, IMO the game looks fine on the deck screen on any settings, so medium and high just burn more battery for no reason. Also in low the fans only kick in during loading screens, where on medium and high they go contantly.
Unlike what others are saying, 800p is an option you can choose with the settings launcher, it runs great at 800p on max settings.
Its a really fun retro-styled game, and runs great on the deck. The controls work perfectly too.
I followed this reddit comment's method, worked perfectly: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/y5xwic/help_with_velvet_assassin_on_deck/isnleoo/
