Mr Elusive

Refuses to start.
Completes first time setup, but then silently quits to desktop after a few seconds. Tried regular, DX9 and DX10 modes, all end with the same result.
Doesn't start.
Completes first-time setup of UE3 runtime, but the actual game does not progress. This is because the game is utilizing an older version of Steam's DRM which is, somewhat ironically, not supported by Proton. Tried using a DRM-free executable as previous poster suggested, but no joy. Interestingly, if you install Steam through Wine and run A:CM that way, it runs (albeit at 15fps).
I had 1,000+ hours playing on Windows before switching to Linux and the game occasionally crashed then. The engine itself is buggy so I don't believe this is a Proton-specific issue.
You won't be able to play on any servers running BattlEye.
DXVK_FRAME_RATE=60 %command%
- Running the game with v-sync seemed noticably slower than Windows 10. Disabling v-sync and limiting the frame rate with
DXVK_FRAME_RATE=60
felt a lot smoother. - 3Den Editor also feels a bit slower when panning camera around. (I have 3,848 hours in this game, most of it in the editor, so it's entirely possible I'm a bit more "sensitive" to it.)
- The launcher is very slow when clicking buttons. It doesn't remember all your startup parameters/settings, so expect to re-do them each time.
- I host my own private server for my unit.
- We don't need or use BattleEye anti-cheat, so no idea if that works or not.
- Server is on my local network, so can confirm LAN/direct IP connections work just fine.
- No issues with any mods or (C)DLCs so far.
- Despite launcher problems, saving/importing HTML mod presets works fine. You can even drag-and-drop just like Windows.
Some tools work, others do not.
- When selecting the default "Play Arma 3 Tools" launch option, it should bring up the launcher with all the tools, but it just silently crashes instead.
- The other launch options work and you can successfully start these tools:
- Addon Builder
- Object Bulder
- Publisher
- Terrain Builder
- Terrain Builder throws an error about the
P:\
drive not being mounted. I've not built terrains for Arma 3 so I'm not sure if that's actually required or not. - Not sure how to run the other tools (e.g.
CfgConvert
), but if I figure it out I'll post an update when time permits.
[Native] Freezes at initial loading screen.
You get the blue loading screen with the rotating tank model, then it suddenly freezes and goes no further.
Insane load times.
Very long loading times. Unlike the native Linux build, which seemed to completely die on me, Proton does eventually load after four or five minutes.
Even if you ignore the fact it's a terrible shovelware RTS game, the insane load times every time you start the game or load a map are not worth it. Do not waste your time or money.
Window issue on very first run, but otherwise fine.
Windowed mode is borked. The very first time you run the game, you'll hear the main menu music but the window won't display. Leave it for about 60-120 seconds and a cinematic will play - you can skip this with LMB if desired - after which the main menu will appear. You can then go into video options and enable fullscreen mode.
Alt-Tab is borked. The game will be squashed to the upper-left corner of the screen and you'll have to restart.
- Did not test the Online League mode as that requires making an account. No idea if it's even functional anymore since Blood Bowl 2 and 3 have been released.
- Succesfully tested a "LAN" game over Internet using SoftEther VPN.
- Local multiplayer is turn-based/hotseat.
(Optional) Adjust frame-rate limit:
SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/Blood Bowl Chaos Edition/Data/BloodBowlChaos.xml
- Open that file in any text editor.
- Find and change the
FPSMax
value to 60 (or whatever you prefer).
Slideshow framerate makes the game unplayable.
60fps at main menu, 13fps in game.
Almost perfect.
Mouse acceleration is insane during the on-foot levels of the campaign.
- Opt-in to the beta branch to get access to the v1.07 patch.
- Pre-rendered cutscenes don't play for some reason.
%command% -nomovies
- Alt-Enter to toggle fullscreen crashes the game.
- Alt-Tabbing on XFCE sometimes causes the taskbar to get stuck on top of the game window.
- Multiplayer is not cross compatible between native Linux and Proton/Windows.
- Had to use this script from GitHub to fix de-sync issue.
- Steam Workshop is fully functional.
- You can still use
-nomovies
to skip the Sega/Relic intro videos (see above).
Need to manually set Proton version and screen resolution in config file, but otherwise works fine.
Forced Proton version to 4.11-13 which fixed startup crash.
Screen is black for all but the upper-left corner. As per SpiderBob's post, you have to find Game.prefs
, open it with a text editor and change primary_adapter
value to match your desktop resolution. Works perfectly after that.
DXVK_HUD=fps,compiler %command% -novid
The
-novid
launch parameter skips the intro video.DXVK_HUD=fps,compiler
shows FPS counter and notification in bottom left whenever shaders are being compiled. These launch options are my personal preference and completely optional. The only minor difference compared to Windows is the font used for rendering text. Outside of that, it's fuctionally identical.
Disabled v-sync by creating a plaintext file where EDF41.exe
resides, then adding the following line:
dxgi.syncInterval = 0
Missing fonts in the menus.
Frame rate sometimes drops significantly during gameplay. Some missions are more affected than others, especially the those from the DLC mission packs. Game is virtually unplayable with v-sync enabled.
- Game worked perfectly on Proton 5.0-9. Since a recent update, my choices are Proton 5.0-10 or 5.13-2. There's no option to use 5.0-9 anymore. Proton 5.0-10 is currently the most playable for me at the time of writing.
- Performance in split-screen multiplayer is worse than playing solo or online.
Stuck in 800x600.
Music doesn't play.
Changing screen resolution crashes the game, so you're stuck playing at 800x600.
Intro FMVs don't play, but that's not crucial for gameplay.
Unplayable.
Your money and all the building/unit costs are shown as ##0.
Played the first level of the campaign. It's impossible to manage your economy due to the aforementioned text bug.
Really bad audio stuttering.
Game must be run with -window launch parameter or it will crash on startup. You can then switch to fullscreen mode through the in-game options menu.
You can start the game with Easy Anti Cheat, it will show the progress bar to indicate it is loading, but it's actually not. Go to play multiplayer matchmaking and you'll get an error saying EAC isn't enabled. You can host/join custom games and invite friends without issue.
I've tried various Proton builds (including GloriousEggroll builds), tweaking various .ini settings from forum posts etc, but those three main issues remain regardless. This game worked perfectly before ODST was released. Something has obviously broke in that update, but I'm not a software developer so I can't really diagnose further.
protontricks 244160 -q --force dotnet40 win7
When starting the game, the default Gearbox launcher works if you install .NET 4.0 via
protontricks
, but it's completely black. You have to hover your mouse over the icons to reveal them. If you click on Mods in the very bottom-right corner, then click back, it re-draws the menu and then everything is displayed correctly.Tried several times to play multiplayer with friends who are running Windows. Even with no mods enabled, you cannot join rooms because you're "running different mods", when when playing completely vanilla. Wasn't able to test against another Linux gamer, so I can't confirm if it's just when playing with Windows players.
Works great.
The Nvidia enhanced fluid effects are not available in the video options, but it's not a major loss. Game is more than playable without them.
Game doesn't start, hangs on black screen.
Works great.
Taskbar appears on top of game when using XFCE, even in borderless fullscreen mode.
Works perfectly.
I play multiplayer with friends using direct IP. The online lobby/matchmaking menu appears to work, but I haven't actually played a game through it.
Occasional crashes in multiplayer.

Singleplayer is fine, multiplayer is borked.
- Multiplayer has significant performance issues.
- Singleplayer is fine.
- Framerate drops to <20fps from the moment you click to host or join a lobby.
- Same experience on both LAN and Internet games, regardless of who hosts the lobby.
- Other Linux friends running Arch and Manjaro do not have this issue, so unsure if it's specific to EndeavourOS, my hardware, etc.
The multiplayer framerate bug for me was caused by failed DNS lookups. Try changing DNS provider or manually adding this line to your /etc/hosts
file. I had to do this for LAN/direct IP games - so I guess it tries to "phones home" for some reason.

Needs 32-bit NVIDIA and PulseAudio packages on EndeavourOS.
Played with three friends, two of which were also running Linux/Proton.
yay -S lib32-nvidia-utils lib32-libpulse
- Without these packages the game would instantly crash to desktop. My two friends who use Arch and Manjaro did not need to install these.
- Game supports LAN play, but didn't get a chance to test it.
[Native] Audio and DLC do not appear to work.
- No audio whatsoever.
- Did not register any of the DLC I'd purchased.
[Proton] Everything works except for online multiplayer.
- Multiplayer servers were shut down in 2015 when Full Control closed.
Minor issues, but definitely playable.
Motion blur caused significant FPS drops, but can be disabled in the video options menu.
The intro movie does not play, so the game will hang at a black screen when you start it. Just keep clicking the left-mouse button until the loading screen appears.
The physics causes performance issues on occasion. For example, if you remove torsion rods on some tanks, the framerate drops while it "bounces around" inside the tank, though it smooths itself out after a few seconds.
Refuses to start.
Tried various Proton versions, none of them worked.
Runs poorly.
Framerate goes from 45 to 30 every few seconds. Scrolling the map also causes the framerate to drop.
Starting the game brings up a black screen - I presume these are meant to be intro movies. You can bypass it by pressing ESC a few times.
Frequent flickering effect while in-game. Used the d3d8.dll
fix on PCGamingWiki to resolve it: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Ghost_Recon#Screen_flickering
Native runs at ~20fps. Proton 5.13-4 runs at 60fps.
There's a bug in the native Linux build related to UI middleware:
https://steamcommunity.com/app/230190/discussions/0/3428846977647944657/#c1642044369660436917
Black screen.
The native Linux port is not cross-compatible with Windows in multiplayer.
Occasional issue with XFCE taskbar, but otherwise perfect.
- I use XFCE. At the main menu, the taskbar is sometimes on-top of the game.
- This usually goes away once you actually load into a match, but sometimes you have to Alt-Tab a few times.
- Not game-breaking, just mildly annoying at times.
- Played "LAN" using SoftEther VPN client.
- No issues playing with a mix of both Windows and other Linux/Proton players.
- Works perfectly.
