I use Proton Experimental as the default selection for all games. This game ran fine immediately after installation. No tinkering required.
Perfect with Proton

In long and large games (as with native Windows) the textures can become buggy.

Out of the box experience.

Did not work with all the tinkering back on ubuntu 23, upgraded to 24 and it worked out of the box. I don't know why or how, but a clean system made it work.
If dual monitor setup, go to settings and tick that option that keeps your cursor in game bounds.
Maybe my previous OS had some underlying issues, but the graphics driver didn't change, so it must be something from Ubuntu itself.

Best case: Black screen after startup
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%
Most versions of Proton fail to load initially due to missing DirectX3D drivers. Proton 6.3-8 allows the game to start, but it sticks on a black screen.

Game just lags sometimes cause it's peer to peer
Singleplayer 1v1 against ai wasn't able to load it, not sure why used to work but just redownloaded the game after a couple months

With compatibility layer on, runs like a native game.
No changes made. With the Steam compatibility layer on, Age of Mythology runs as if it was out of the box. Hit install, hit play, and your in.
Servers have issues, unrelated to proton

Sometimes you can't see the full "Idle Villager" banner, top will be transparent but bottom is visible. Usually just use the hotkey for it so it's fine.
Not working
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 gamemoderun %command%

Works out-of-the-box.
- Did not test multiplayer.
Would launch but would freeze on the initial loading screen

-fullscreen
have experienced issues with steam overlay. if i host a game it often crashes. not sure why. joining a game hosted by a friend isnt really an issue though. if i open steam overlay while in game and try to type, then exit, i can no longer type in game.
I could not figure out why the game wouldnt launch for ages. tried on fedora 39 and ubuntu 22.04. then i tried launching the game after setting my screens resolution much lower and it worked. so i set a launch option and now the game launches fine on both distros.

The screen had a bunch of black boxes appearing in a checkerboard pattern in several places. This went away when I changed the resolution in the configuration files to match my monitor.
I opened the file ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Age of Mythology/Users/Default.prf
and changed the following:
<resolution>1920</resolution>
<resolutiony>1080</resolutiony>
Like I mentioned before, there were black checkerboard patterns across the screen, but I was able to make this go away by changing the resolution settings.
The game would not run at all until I switch to Proton Experimental. Also, the launcher tends to be glitchy, so I found it better to skip it alltogether.

Did not work. I am running Fedora 39.
I am running Fedora 39 with KDE. (despite what the system thing says) Tried proton 8, experimental, 7, and 5. tried each version with AND without launcher. with 8, the screen flickered black a bunch, before crashing.
Game works as expected

modified windowmode and resolution for.
<windowmode>0</windowmode>

Took a while to install, but working 100% with Proton Experimental

Starts up perfectly. Ran on big picture mode 3400x1440p ultrawide resolution no problem. Multiplayer not tested.

Some texts can be a small but nothing completely unreadable
Especially for RTS games on the Deck, customizing controls to your preference is recommended.

Text can be a tad too small
Controls without a mice need some used to
Works, but launcher is iffy.
God powers are misaligned to the header bar
Launcher looks like garbage and can cause game to crash before launch. Luckily, there is option on steam launch to bypass launcher.
I had to run steam using this command to get it to work
VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/nvidia_icd.json steam
after that just launching the game from the library worked perfectly.
system crashed, after that point the game did not run anymore saying it needs XML 4.0. switching to proton 5.0-10 fixed the problem.
I switched to linux because windows does not run this game well in multiplayer.
Install the game on ext4 instead of NTFS, it does not run on NTFS.
