Window issue on very first run, but otherwise fine.
Windowed mode is borked. The very first time you run the game, you'll hear the main menu music but the window won't display. Leave it for about 60-120 seconds and a cinematic will play - you can skip this with LMB if desired - after which the main menu will appear. You can then go into video options and enable fullscreen mode.
Alt-Tab is borked. The game will be squashed to the upper-left corner of the screen and you'll have to restart.
- Did not test the Online League mode as that requires making an account. No idea if it's even functional anymore since Blood Bowl 2 and 3 have been released.
- Succesfully tested a "LAN" game over Internet using SoftEther VPN.
- Local multiplayer is turn-based/hotseat.
(Optional) Adjust frame-rate limit:
SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/Blood Bowl Chaos Edition/Data/BloodBowlChaos.xml
- Open that file in any text editor.
- Find and change the
FPSMax
value to 60 (or whatever you prefer).
Game has to be set to launch in fullscreen or else the window won't appear at all in my testing, and cinematics MUST be disabled for the window to appear / not be a black screen, which as far as I can tell just turns off the videos that play on the main menu. This can be done via steps I got from the other proton report on this game:
"Edit .local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/216890/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/BloodBowlChaos/Config.xml and set 1 and 0 Windowing:Other"
Mouse cursor flickers sometimes while in-game, but not to any degree that bothered me, and it was still easy to read mouse tooltips.
You have to force fullscreen prior to launch via the game's config files or it won't work, and trying to enter windowed mode after that will break the game.
Tested in an online league with my girlfriend - we've played two games now, no issues. She's on windows, so that works fine too.
No issues other than the mouse flickering mentioned above.
DO NOT USE ANY PROTON VERSION AFTER 5.13-6.
In every single release after that, alt tabbing will break the game.
SDL_VIDEO_MINIMIZE_ON_FOCUS_LOSS=0
Edit .local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/216890/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Documents/BloodBowlChaos/Config.xml and set <Fullscreen>1</Fullscreen>
and <Cinematics><Enable>0</Enable></Cinematics>
DO NOT alt-tab out of the window, otherwise it renders as a tiny 100x30px image on a black background. Interaction points are still in their correct places.
Previously had intermittent networking issues in multiplayer. Only played offline campaign when running it through GE. SDL config variable may not be necessary - it seemed to be in there when I re-installed the game.
Works great… once you disable cinematics!
Sometimes it locks up during the post-match. But no progress is lost.
The "shows black screen until clicking" problem has become "only shows black screen" with Proton 5.13 but enabling Full Screen/disabling Cinematics fixes it. (This may need you to use an older Proton first)
Occasionally loses connection and automatically retries when setting up multiplayer but is fine in-game.
Sometimes it locks up during the post-match. But no progress is lost.
The game will play the music for a minute before starting. Then it just shows a black screen until you click, and then the menu appears. Occasionally takes several attempts to connect in multiplayer (lost connection then game retries).
Runs in Proton 4.x, crashes Proton 5.0 (terminate called after throwing an instance of 'dxvk::DxvkError') without "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1"
Sometimes it locks up right at the end of a match. But no progress is lost.
The game will play the music for a minute before starting. Then it just shows a black screen until you click, and then the menu appears.
Left-click after the initial black screen that comes up while the music is playing. The menu will show, and it's smooth play from there.
After launching the game, no window opens but the music plays. Wait for about 65 seconds and a full screen black window will show, clicking anywhere will get you to the main menu and from there you'll be able to play with seemingly no other issues.
Game starts with black screen with sound. Had to exit Steam (game sound still playing in the background after exit). Once Steam was restarted game worked perfectly.
Initially, I could hear the game but it didn't seem to spawn a window. After switching to Gnome overview mode and back, a window showed up but it was all black. I clicked in the window and the game's main menu appeared. I played a bit of the tutorial after that and everything seemed to work fine but then I tried to change the game to full screen mode and increase the resolution. After that I couldn't get the game to launch until I re-installed it. Everything seems fine now but I'll probably need to leave it in windowed mode in order to be able to play.
Music plays, but no window appears.
Music plays, but nothing else happens - no visuals.
Minor menu problems
Just click through the initial black screen and it works great!
Only sound is playing. No video output.
Black screen at start, then the games works after a click. The main menu doesn't work when displayed on a secondary monitor (displayed, but no keyboard/mouse action works).
