Works perfectly - no issues
On my Steam Deck, the text is a bit small and hard to read, but on my desktop it's fine.
Works out of the box
Had very rare lag spikes, but I think that might have been shader caching or file IO when it tried to load a new level or sound effect. Once everything was loaded it was fine. Nothing I would consider worrying about.
Installs native version by default on Steam Deck, works out of the box
Rumble didn't seem to work, could be my system though
Got a quarter second hang at the start of some runs, otherwise was smooth.
Using the mod loader to install mods is a bit of a hassle but other than that, works great
Installed Everest, Strawberry Jam and the Eevee skin (mods)
When you switch rooms there's supposed to be a "scroll" effect between them. However, on Linux there is none and it just freezes the game for half a second. Not game breaking, but jarring if you are used to the proper way. This happens on desktop Linux as well.
Personal preference, but for me the stick is more comfortable and reliable than the d-pad.
Olympus (Mod Manager) Install Tutorial:
- Install Celeste
- Switch to Desktop Mode.
- Open the "Discover Store".
- Search for and install "Olympus".
- Open the Steam Library and select Add a Game -> Add a non-steam game -> Olympus
- Return to gaming mode.
- Open Olympus (It will be under the "Non-Steam" category.
- In your installations list on the left, click manage and add your Steam version.
- Install Everest and/or Mods to taste (I found that the search box in the mods window didn't work, so there was a lot of scrolling). Honestly, it doesn't work that well, and you have to fight with the touchscreen and force kill/restart it a bit.
- Launch Everest. In game, you may have to go to the mod options and install dependencies.
Gameplay works perfectly, some minor windowing bugs on Cinnamon
On Cinnamon+XOrg in fullscreen, selecting a window on another monitor would "lock out" controls (both mouse and gamepad) until I manually alt+tabbed back into it.
Steam overlay is enabled for me, and seems to work fine (using Experimental). I am using an 8BitDo 2 Pro controller, which worked perfectly.
Worked out of the box.
Started in windowed mode with a small window. Changing it in the ingame options menu worked though, and it might be preference.
Played through the first world without issues.
Works out of the box.
I may have tweaked some settings in the in game settings menu to get the right resolution and bevels, but that's not a big deal and probably personal preference.
Works perfectly out of the box
Game doesn't support Steam Cloud Sync, be careful!
Requires selecting a community controller layout
Reduced stick deadzones
Game has no controller support and no default layout for steam input
Worked for me out of the box, although performance was worse than expected
Game defaulted to Ultra settings, and I had lag spikes and slowdowns on my 144Hz monitor. I can't tell if this is Proton or the game itself overestimating my graphics capabilities. Wasn't enough to bother me, and I think I could probably work around it by turning the settings down.
I played the game for about an hour, and didn't notice anything clearly missing. The animations when smelling a purple scent play, I saw nothing that obviously looked like a "test pattern" and one of my cubs learned a skill fine.
Works without issue
Has the standard Unity startup menu, need to click "play".
Occasional stutters, may not be unique to Linux though.
Steam recommends using Proton, but I found no differences between it and the native version.
Perhaps one of the best Linux gaming experiences; feels like devs put a lot of work into Linux support
Mods work perfectly.
If you are using Linux you can use "unblocking saves" where the game autosaves without pausing.
Sometimes, when starting the game proper it would either crash or hang on a black screen. Didn't encounter any crashes when it actually loaded though.
This game does require a Microsoft account to use (setting it up/linking it worked fine). You can add friends (for multiplayer) through the XBox website rather than whatever XBox app Windows uses.
Works perfectly
Using an 8bitdo Pro 2 controller. Played a few levels with no issues.
Game runs great with no issues
Game has no recommended Proton version, used my default of 8.0-4.
Works out of the box when ran through Steam
Only issue is that it would crash when trying to export/encode a highlight clip. Dosen't really affect the gameplay itself, and you can just capture the screen using OBS or similar if you really need it.
Technically launches, but doesn't run well. Good if you want an authentic 2010-era wine experience.
No background music in game
Crashed at the start of my second game
Took about a minute on a loading screen to start after selecting play.
Native Linux version doesn't launch.
Works out of the box
Defaults to 720p, easily changeable in game.
Played a few runs.
By default, Steam Deck uses the Windows/Proton version of the game. Tried the native version, and couldn't notice any issues or differences.
Everything just worked out of the box
Online play felt fine to me (although I'm probably not good enough at fighting games to notice any serious lag)
Workshop characters worked fine as well, at least the ones I tried.
Played a game and everything ran perfectly.
I could not wrap my head around the default gamepad controls. Switched to the "Intuitive Root" controls which let me use the left control stick for panning and the touchscreen for interacting. Your mileage may vary.
Works out of the box
Occasional performance hiccups. Not sure if it's Linux specific though.
Works out of the box
Due to the nature of the game, there's a lot of small text. There's a "big text" option in the options, but I'm not sure it makes it big enough for people who have vision difficulties.
I had very occasional hitches.
I tried the game a month ago, and controller input was broken, but that seems to be fixed now on the main branch; I didn't need to use the beta branch.
Works out of the box
Just a heads up: The game doesn't seem to support Steam's save file sync. Make sure to make some backups if you're messing around with things.
It doesn't seem to have a recommended Proton version (yet), but my defaults of Experimental and 8.0-4 seem to work fine.
Alt-tab when in fullscreen causes the window to minimize.
Mod Manager Install Tutorial
- Download from https://gamebanana.com/tools/6273
- Extract into your Sonic Mania install dir.
- Add ManiaModManager.exe as a non-steam game.
- In compatibility options set it to Proton Experimental.
- Download mods of your choice.
- Extract mods into the newly created "mods" folder (they need to be extracted, the raw .7z/zips won't be detected).
- Run Mania Mod Manager, enable your mods, click "Install Loader" and then Save/Save & Play.
Played Sonic Megamix Mania for about an hour, seemed to work perfectly.
Asks to install Java, redirects to the Java website and doesn't start.
Not tried any of the workarounds suggested here, your milage may vary.
Need to use the launcher to configure resolution and input, but otherwise works perfectly.
Need to set resolution in the launcher.
Switching to another app (eg Discord) in gaming mode caused the resolution to break and shrink to a tiny one. Switching to experimental fixes this. Other than that, the default proton version works fine.
The configuration menu can be accesed via Properties > General > Launch options if needed.
Worked out of the box
Defaulted to 720p rather than 800p, easy enough to change in game.
Showed a mouse cursor in menus but not in game, even when not using mouse/touch navigation.
Crashes on launch
Not tried any tricks beyond forcing proton experimental.
Looks to be technically possible to 100% on Steam Deck, but requires creativity. Doesn't run very well though.
For 100% requires at least one non-Steam game added to Steam and some control tweaking
I'm the one that made that layout
FPS is terrible. Not sure if this is the same as on Windows, but especially during Achievement Unlocked 3, it was noticably laggy and had about 15fps.
The puzzle games are very much not designed for the Steam Deck, and it feels like you have to be creative to solve some of the puzzles:
- You frequently have to switch between gamepad, touchscreen and onscreen keyboard.
- You need to tweak the gamepad inputs themselves to add certain inputs.
- One puzzle requires you to move your mouse outside the window. For the steam deck, I found that putting the game in windowed mode and right clicking at the bottom of the screen had the right click menu increase the resolution enough to satisfy that requirement.
- One puzzle requires you to paste the contents of your clipboard into "notepad". I used Discord for this, but if you already know the solution you don't need to.
- One puzzle requires you to alt-tab to another program and back again. I wasn't able to find a way around this besides switching to Discord in steam (which worked!).
Of course, these are just because I was running it on a Steam Deck, on Desktop Linux the game probably plays as intended. Although I'm not sure if the performance issues also apply there.
Works perfectly
Using an 8bitdo Pro 2 controller - no issues.
Switching between "retro" graphics (with start) works as expected.
Played through a few levels of 1, and the mansion of 2 and 3.
Played a few local multiplayer games without issue
Using a third party dock to connect to a 4k screen. Played multiplayer with an 8BitDo Pro 2 via bluetooth, and a generic XBox 360 controller via USB. Didn't notice any performance issues.
Valve recommended Proton over the native version. I have not tried the native version.
Game runs great with no issues
Using an 8Bit Do Pro 2 controller. Game doesn't have a recommended Proton version, so using my default of Experimental.
Besides strange controller behaviour, no issues
Disabling "shader mode" doesn't seem to scale the overlay correctly, but you shouldn't need to disable it.
For some reason, the mappings of the face buttons are different between the Steam Deck, my 8Bit Do Pro 2 controller on my Linux Desktop and that same controller bluetoothed to the Deck. The mapping shown on the Steam Input configurator and in-game glyphs are displayed correctly though.
During the game, a window popped up with a black screen. I think it was supposed to be a tutorial video? Anyway, it was black for me. Didn't affect gameplay, just had to figure out pressing bumper twice did a barrel roll.
Using an 8bit Duo Pro 2 controller. Besides the tutorial issue (which might be on Windows as well?), game seemed to run fine.
I think that Hack the Planet is doing wierd things with keyboards that cause it to not work, can't say though.
Some games will not launch.
Trying to view a video opens an "Open File" dialog rather than a video.
Saw this rated as borked, and decided to try it out and see. Gave each game a quick try, so there may be broken gameplay or stability issues down the line. Firstly, for some reason it defaults to not using a compatibility layer at all, so you need to force proton experimental.
Other than that, most things work. Trying to open a PDF or HTML page shows a menu that lets you pick your native PDF reader or web browser. Videos do NOT work, but exist in the game files under "documents" as MP4s. Flash games do work with the included flash player. The SWFs, PDFs and HTML documents also exist in the install location, so you can access them directly.
Some games crash or have issues, as follows:
- Manufactoid (Released Version): Doesn't launch.
- Intelligent Destruction: Colour Picker in the build unit screen doesn't show colours (I assume it's a colour picker).
- Infinifrag 2 (Unreleased): Server and client can be launched, but the client can't connect to the server.
- Infiniminer: Doesn't launch.
- Project Typhoon: Crashes and amusingly shows an outdated crash report page.
- Hack the Planet: Not sure if this actually works. It launches and can start a game, but I can't seem to do anything to interact with it.
Works out of the box
I'm using an 8BitDo Pro 2 Controller, and didn't have any issues; whatever was happening before seems to have been fixed.
