Proton-5.6-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Proton-5.6-GE-2
Game launches but just a black screen with the version number of the game on the bottom left. Music seems to be playing fine and the games cursor is visible when i move the mouse.
Just won't render anything.
Tried with Proton 3.16-6, 3.16-4 and 3.7-8 and various built-in tweaks ('Disable Esync', 'Disable D3d11' and 'Use Wine D3d11'). Same results more or less.
I'd love to get this working. So if anyone has any tips, please holler here.

Menu works perfectly now.
When loading a new game, the game gets stuck at the loading screen pretty much as others have described.
I believe that once this is resolved, it will run perfectly.
Tried with Disable Esync but does not work
Uplay client appears and downloads an update. Once finished it attempts to restart and apply the update, but is unable to do so. Uplay client does not appear on subsequent launch attempts and instead seems to create a zombie process.
When you first launch it, nothing happens. Uplay won't start. You have to kill upc.exe and it will then start with Child of Light.
1: I can't get rid of the box in the upper right corner "Press Shift+F2 while in game to activate the overlay" while in game. I can't seem to disable overlay via the uplay settings either
2: there is a black square appearing at the center of the screen at the beginning of each fight which fades away quickly. So it doesn't interfere with the gameplay
Game launches fine but for the first time, you'll need to go to the wine window that launches uplay, go to settings and disable the uplay overlay. Subsequent launches will show a warning about the uplay overlay disabled. Simply click to proceed to the game.
Achievements for uplay still work as usual and the steam overlay works fine in game too. Game runs perfectly except for one graphical glitch at the beginning of battles where you see a visible black box appear for a second before disappearing.
I assume this can be fixed. Not sure if it happens on mesa though.
I'm using the NVIDIA proprietary driver.

There is a black square appearing at the center of the screen at the beginning of each fight which fades away quickly. This is due to a glitch it seems with battle intros. Go to game settings and disable battle intros and the problem goes away.

Proton-6.10-GE-1
Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF GloriousEggroll
Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF
This really should be platinum. If you have issues with this, that's on your system/config.
Proton-6.9-GE-2
Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF GloriousEggroll
Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF
Proton-5.9-GE-2-MF GloriousEggroll
Proton-5.9-GE-2-MF
Runs 60 fps at 1440p. All graphical settings maxed out.
No launch options needed. Platinum out of the box.
This is for the full game and not the demo.
Works in this Proton beta flawlessly too. However, i noticed that with both 3.16-5 and 3.16-4, if your pulseaudio default resampling format is soxr-vhq, the audio is choppy.
However, if you use speex-10 as the default resampling format, it works beautifully.
Played a lot more.
I previously set speex-10 as my default sampling rate in Pulseaudio. Without doing that, it works fine on speaker.
I had been sending audio to a bluetooth headset and the latency was slightly improved when using speex-10 over soxr-vhq. However, sometimes, the chopping and crackling audio still came back.
This also happened in Valkyria Chronicles.
Starting each with 'PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 %command%' in launch options seems to have sorted that out.
I also have disabled Esync in Proton config.
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 %command%' is still needed in launch options to get non choppy bluetooth audio but other than that, runs perfectly out of the box.
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 %command% needed in launch options to get it to work perfectly. Otherwise it'll still work but not as well.
This is now perfect out of the box.
PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 %command% are NO LONGER needed in launch options.
The moment the first fight begins right after getting off the train, crashes to desktop with error.
Crashes the moment any battle occurs. The sound of the battle starting happens and then it crashes.
Crashes during battle transition swirl audio. Can't participate in any battles. No tweaks fix this. No resolution or changes in the game launcher settings fix it either.
Proton-5.4-GE-1
When loading the save menu or shop menu at a save point, controller input hangs for quite a while before you are able to continue. Game itself runs fine.
When loading the save menu or shop menu at a save point, controller input hangs for quite a while before you are able to continue. Game itself runs fine.
Runs perfectly out of the box. I see some people here submitting reports with Mesa 3.0. That's really old. Same goes for old 3.x NVIDIA drivers. Please update your drivers and try with Proton 3.16.6.
Runs out of the box without any other Proton specific tweaks.
To make any controller work however, i had to go to the game properties and set 'Steam Input Per-Gate Setting' to 'Forced Off'. For the record, i used DS4 (Bluetooth & USB) & Xbone (USB) controllers to test. Without doing this, they are completely not detected.
This is not specific to Proton i believe but it has more to do with the earlier version of Unity which the game used clashing with Steam Input.
Game runs perfectly.
It however, does not exit cleanly and the process needs to be killed manually via the terminal.
However, for audio through bluetooth, there was some cackling. Had to add 'PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 %command%' to launch options to get rid of that.
Works perfectly. Used a controller. It don't make sense to play any MGS game without one anyway.

Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF
All videos play too without mf-install (even mf-install previously didn't fix tutorial videos). This GE-2-MF is something else.
After the initial system data loading, it seems to be stuck with audio playing. Alt+tab out and in gets to the main screen perfectly fine though.
Plays perfectly fine on 1080p with low settings.
Get about 18 fps or so on 1440p with low settings.
Hangs if i change it to high settings on either of those resolutions. Have to force close wine.
Also, when switching resolutions while in game, i have to alt+tab in an out with every change as well.
VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr11,dxr,force_static_cbv PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 VKD3D_FEATURE_LEVEL=12_2 mangohud %command%
Lots of transparent textures especially with walls and vehicles. Seems to be an issue only with NVIDIA cards and no independent settings changes seem to fix this at present.
If their hardware was up to par. I was playing on sub-par hardware and i still managed to enjoy it.
This helped add videos for cutscenes etc.
Runs amazingly and consistently well across every Proton version to date (later ones perform even better)
Proton-6.9-GE-2
This is my most played game on Steam.
Played it with a buddy using online co-op. I've completed game on single player and several things in 'Apocalypse' difficulty in campaign have been cleared.
Played this over the course of more than a year and it runs out of box without any tweaks on bleeding edge system (Arch).
Really should be platinum. If you have problems running this on your system, you need to figure out what's wrong with your setup.
Works great (platinum grade) once you work out the legacy problems. These problems also exist on Windows in a similar form.

Had to follow the guide here --> https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1760498189
Installing WMP11 via protontricks or winetricks didn't work for me. I had to use cabextract to extract the executable to a folder and install it to the prefix using that. Then only did the game successfully load the launch video.
Of course, before going to that step, i first disabled GFWL by using the patched executable prior to launching the game for the first time after downloading it.
However, this might work with Proton if you install GFWL via protontricks.
Proton-6.9-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Proton-6.9-GE-2
The game started with borderless windowed mode. Switching it to fullscreen crashes the game but starting it up again shows that it successfully switched.
Other than that, no issues. The game i'd say runs like a platinum rated game.
Origin thin setup gets in the way. I won't be surprised if the game runs well but this is stopping it from launching.
Refunded for now. Until the game launches at least via Proton, i won't bother buying it.

Proton-5.6-GE-2
Runs perfectly out of the box. DS4 controller via bluetooth works perfectly as well.
Works perfectly. No tweaks necessary.
Anyone who thinks this isn't platinum worthy atm is high.
Runs perfectly. Near native performance as i would see on Windows on the same rig.
Perfect out of box experience. No input lag at all even with a DS4 controller using bluetooth.
Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF GloriousEggroll
Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF
No one can tell this runs on Linux under the hood.
Already completed it but gave it a good test with all the final weapons running at 1440p with audio output through bluetooth linked headset.
Good enough to be whitelisted for sure.
Probably needs the MF fixes manually applied unless he's running Proton-GE. Didn't try it with stock proton though so i might be wrong..

Proton-5.9-GE-5-ST
Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF GloriousEggroll
Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF
Works perfectly out of the box with Proton 5.0-7. Use the right version people. Then you would not have problems launching.
Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF GloriousEggroll
Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF
Also tried with regular Proton 5.0.7 and the experience was the same.
No NPC audio. Mouse is slow.
Everything else works.
Either compile FAudio with ffmpeg or use x_audio 2_7 via launch options or winecfg and sound will work as expected. That's all that's needed really.
Proton-5.9-GE-8-ST GloriousEggroll
Proton-5.9-GE-8-ST
Crashes when zoning in and out of areas sometimes.
The biggest problem is a consistent crash when a NPC talks to you.
https://theouterworlds.wiki.fextralife.com/Niles
Niles will crash your Proton fever with a passion!
Hopefully this gets fixed as it is game breaking.
Does not run at all although it installs fine.
Does not work with Proton 5.0.7 or Proton 5.6-GE-2.
Error is the same as before --> Broken dll file: TosSteamClient.dll
For the record, the game works fine when using Lutris.
Proton-5.9-GE-2-MF GloriousEggroll
Proton-5.9-GE-2-MF & Proton-5.0-GE-1
Windowed mode crashed my client. But full screen resolution works.
I didn't want to waste my time with the error "Broken dll file: TosSteamClient.dll". I noticed some people had success launching it with Proton-5.0-GE-1 so i installed it and ran it using this version and the client launched successfully.
I then switched to using Proton-5.9-GE-2-MF (latest at this point) and it works just fine thereafter.
Do NOT use PROTON_USE_WINED3D (lots of microstutter). The game looks (sharper and prettier) and runs much better with stock (no need for any launch options).
Enjoy STEAMERS!
Proton-5.2-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Proton-5.2-GE-2
Had to disable Esync and also add 'PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 %command%' to launch options to ensure no choppy audio through bluetooth.
Had to link symlink FAudio to Proton 4.2's folder. -->
ln -sf /usr/lib/libFAudio.so.0 /data/Games/Steam/steamapps/common/Proton\ 4.2/dist/lib/libFAudio.so.0
ln -sf /usr/lib/libFAudio.so.0 /data/Games/Steam/steamapps/common/Proton\ 4.2/dist/lib64/libFAudio.so.0
On Arch before i could get the voices working in game.
Other than that, everything else works out of the box via Proton.
If i didn't have to do this, it'd be platinum.
Performance is stellar even on my own computer. I'd say comparable or even better than what i'd expect on it's native platform.

Works perfectly after compiling FAudio with ffmpeg. Otherwise, NPC sounds and music won't work.
Runs perfectly out of the box with Proton 4.11-1.
Compile FAudio with ffmpeg or use "WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xaudio2_7=n,b" %command%" in launch options to get over this and the game runs as smooth as butter. Even on relatively old hardware.
It's decently playable but the mouse input latency/inaccuracy needs to be fixed to have a more enjoyable experience.
Proton-5.4-GE-1
Especially in the Gate of Fates window, input is laggy and extremely inaccurate for mouse.
Afro head blob is fixed.
Proton-5.4-GE-2 GloriousEggroll
Lighting issues - https://www.dropbox.com/s/ytqse8d184af5y0/badLighting.mp4?dl=0
Experience has greatly improved with Proton 5.4-GE-2 (minus the workaround initially set for afro head in 5.4-GE1 since devs fixed it in their patch).
Increased fps + laggy mouse movement in 'Gates of Fate' window fixed.
Played from start to end on Uber difficulty. Not a single crash. Sound played perfectly. Performance was on par with Windows.
